So apparently the the embargo on the Radeon VII has lifted and its performs on the level of a 1080 Ti... doh!
Having a bit of schadenfreude because the people eating crow are the same people who have been complaining about the price of the 2080 Ti ... from a gaming perspective, I guess I can see their point, but for the kind of stuff we do, I've been sitting here the past few months wondering why they are complaining about a card that (for compute) is essentially a Titan V without the double precision performance for less than half the price.

Over at MilkyWay they said the New Radeon VII is at 1:4 for dual precision, what is the Titan V at?

1:2 for the titan V ~ 7.5 TeraFLOP/s

Radeon VII is 3.5 TeraFlops FP64, but it is on par with the 1080 TI for single precision, and besides, lacks the tensor cores if and when any projects start to use them. Also, I'm pretty sure the Radeon isn't going to run any projects that are CUDA based...

2080 Ti is at 420 GFLOP/s DP
1080 TI is at 354 GFLOP/s DP
2080 is at 315 GFLOP/s DP

(those are nVidia's "official" numbers - your mileage may vary. For example, the figure they quote for the 1080 Ti is based on a calculation of 2 IPC * 3584 cores * 1.582 boost clock. My FE card boosts to 1,911 GHz, so I would imagine that all (at least all the nVidia) figures are on the low side, but good luck actually realizing the theoretical peaks.)

the radeon VII is on pair with a 2080 in games, but with better energy efficiency.

when it comes to pure HP/SP power it beats even a 2080 Ti and mocks a Titan RTX in DP. Oh did I mentioned you get a hell of DP? (hint: VII RPR is on pair with 2080 RPR...)

sure nothing for primgrid, but in DP-Projects this monster runs circles around every Nvdia consumer card.

and if you bring in the Titans...look at there price tag...you can buy 4 VII for one Titan V. 4 VII have a bit less than twice the DP of one Titan V and 4 times HP/SP of one Titan V...

I'm just a bit annoyed that there will be no AIB boards. or at least there are no custom design announced...

Personally, I couldn't care less about half precision. That's like nVidia making a big deal that the Titan RTX can do 300 TFLOP/s 4 bit integer (pretty much next to useless to me.) Yes, the Titan Volta costs significantly more; it is also more than twice as fast for real HPC tasks, and has capabilities that no AMD card has, capabilities that are now being mainstreamed into nVidia's consumer RTX cards. My real point was that there are a lot of people in the YouTube tech space that complain about nVidia's and Intel's pricing structure and conveniently gloss over the fact that AMD is well behind both companies technologically in their respective markets, until AMD make a big fuss about a release and they have to do an honest review or lose viewers (in case you haven't seen the reviews, they are pretty much unanimous that it's a dud). All you have to do is go to top500.org and see how many systems are using some combination of Intel / and nVidia or IBM proprietary processors and nVidia versus how many are running any AMD components at all.
