For Christmas I got an AMD4 1920X Threadripper with 12/24 cores in it and am wondering if anyone has crunched using something similar here yet. I hope to have it online this coming week and am hoping it will 'rip' thru some PG units.

Well, it being AMD, it'll suck at LLR. I use mine for GCW sieve instead currently, about one hour per task. It's a great chip in general (and for other projects, like LHC), but for prime hunting it's not great.

Congratulations on the new arrival!

Considering there's an SoB challenge starting in about 36 hours, you might want to read this...

https://www.primegrid.com/forum_thread.php?id=8360&nowrap=true#124336

That particular CPU isn't in the chart, but the 16-core version managed to turn in a quite impressive time on an SoB going all-in with 16 cores.

Without owning one there are some general statements that can be made for LLR/genefer.
1, the effective total potential performance, indicated as actual cores multiplied by clock, is about half that of Intel CPUs. It can kinda brute force it from simply having more cores.
2, for small tasks, you can realise the potential performance
3, for big tasks, you may end up limited by available ram bandwidth. However, with quad channels, and only equivalent to 6 similarly clocked intel cores, that's not a bad ratio.
4, I don't know if there was a good conclusion if it might be more efficient to run two tasks on half the cores each, to allow them to stay on the same die and not have to cross dies within that CPU.

If you run CPU sieve, it will eat them in vast quantities.

Thank you everyone for your help! That gives me a great start on what to crunch with it and I will check out the SOB tasks too, although it may not be ready for the start of the challenge. It's being built by a local pc store, I usually do it myself but have never done a threadripper before and they gave me a good price to put it all together. I dropped off the parts yesterday and while they thought it could be done before they closed just as I was leaving some regular customer came in with a higher priority job, so I get the pc back on Monday. I'm okay with that as I'm a once in a while guy for them.

The pc will start with Linux on it but at some point I will put Windows on it, I'm a Windows guy but Linux is faster to install and setup for crunching. I can also take a harddrive out of one pc and put it in another one and Linux itself will download any drivers needed and after a quick reboot be up and running with no problems.

Thanks again for your quick and very helpful responses!!

How did you go with this build Mikey?
My 16/32T threadripper just competed in the TdP challenge if you want to look over how it performed.

I ran >5< in my app_config to crunch 3WU's across 15 cores for PPSE. I think I stepped it down to 2 WU for MEGA.

My biggest issue with the T/R is heat. It's summer here in Australia and even with the air con running in my study with a few other PC's around and ambient temp of 29 degrees Celsius (84.2F), my threadripper throttles back to around 3.4Ghz.
I'm using the biggest Noctua heatsink with 2 fans in a push/pull config + case fans etc.
I JUST can't get it cool enough.
Most review testing I've seen, they have an ambient temp of about 22 degrees (71F) but that's simply not possible in a room full of PC's running.

Edit - Oh I see you said a AM4 1920X....sorry...that will be different to my 1950X.
Oh well...my question stands...how did you go?

I have it running SGS units right now but only 1 at a time on each core, I am going out of town soon and have to shut it down but when I get back I will turn it loose on some multi-threaded units. As for heat it's running cooler than an older AMD 8320 cpu with a 1080Ti in it sitting right next to it, the 8320 is also running SGS units and both gpu's are running gpugrid units right now. The T-R pc is running Linux Mint while the 8320 is running Windows, the T-R is doing SGS units in about 2000 to 2100 seconds while the 8 core is running them in about 3000 seconds. Each pc has one cpu core free just for the gpu to use, there is one gpu in each machine.

I did run another project on the T-R using a multi-threaded app_config file and it ran them very well, they ran much faster than an I7-3930k cpu did! I only ran 3 cpu cores per wu on that project as using 4 or 5 or more cores didn't help any, in fact it slowed down a little bit the more cores I threw at it. I did not try 10 or more cores on a single wu though. Just for clarity the project was Yafu.
