I've got a chance to buy some lightly used Quadro cards - K5200 and K4200.

Are they any good for PrimeGrid, in particular GFN?

Thanks

These are second generation Kepler cards.

K4200 = GTX 760Ti with slower clocks
K5200 = GTX 780 with slower clocks

On the current GFN21 challenge, I'd expect about 90,000 to 100,000 second times for the K5200 and about 130,000 to 140,000 second times for the K4200. By way of camparison, a GTX 960 runs around 120,000 seconds and a GTX 1060 runs in the 65,000 to 80,000 second range (depending on it being a 6GB or 3GB variety).

Kepler cards do quite well relative to their age on PPS sieve, but do very poorly compared to Maxwell and newer on AP27.

If they are fairly cheap, they might be worth it given that the Quadro cards are often lower power and in single-slot formats compared to the comparable GeForce cards. However, you might do better picking up super cheap Maxwell or (even better) Pascal cards.

Free? Maybe.
K4200 takes about 177,000 seconds (49 hours) for GFN21
https://www.primegrid.com/results.php?hostid=898322&offset=0&show_names=0&state=0&appid=16

You'll want Afterburner or similar for fan control since it's quite annoying at max (which is only 65%).

Approximate from the last time I checked:
GFN-15: 0.028 hrs.
GFN-16: 0.096 hrs.
GFN-17 LOW: 0.366 hrs.
GFN-17 MEGA: 0.412 hrs.
GFN-18: 1.068 hrs.
GFN-19: 4.580 hrs.
GFN-20: 10.770 hrs.

Didn't bother with GFN-22
Couldn't get AP27 to run without errors.

Note that this computer has had it's share of issues so YMMV.

Just to follow-up on Scott's data ... I have two GTX 1060 (3 Gb) cards and they all have completed units in about 74,000 seconds (73,297 - 74,631 seconds).

Looking at the specs, the K5200 has 2304 CUDA cores and so does the new RTX 2070.

Does that mean the K5200 should do GFN at similar speeds to the 2070 or are the Quadro cards missing something else besides faster clocks and DDR6 memory?

im not shure, but i think because gfn runs with open cl, those cuda cores are not that important

Number of cores is really only comparable within a GPU family. The GTX 780 also has 2304 cores, and these are the same kind of cores in the K5200. In general, the cores of a previous family are slower than those of a newer GPU family. For example, the GTX 1080 has 2560 (Pascal) cores, but runs GFN21 slower than the RTX 2070 with 2304 (Turing) cores (40k-45k seconds vs. 28k seconds, respectively).

The NVidia families of CUDA/OCL capable GPUs (from oldest to newest) are as follows (with an example GPU listed):

Tesla (GTX 280) *note: not all in this family can do OCL*
Fermi (GTX 480, GTX 580)
Kepler (GTX 680, GTX 780)
Maxwell (GTX 980)
Pascal (GTX 1080)
Volta (Titan V)
Turing (RTX 2080)

**Note that Volta is a special exception to the earlier is slower rule. Volta GPUs often run as fast or faster than Turing cards**

**Note that there are some exceptions to the general, older is slower rule. For example, the Titan series of cards from the Kepler family have a comparatively high double-precision capability such that those cards are faster than expected on GFN21 and GFN22**

**Note that Tesla and Quadro cards are usually special versions of comparable Geforce cards. Their performance is usually similar, but is often affected by some important differences: 1) slower clocks (slower), 2) sometimes better double precision capability (faster on GFN21 and GFN22 only), 3) more GPU memory, 4) higher quality components (greater durability/stability for heat, etc.)**

I'm thinking of replacing one of my desktops - but with such a strong power limit that there are very few suitable desktops available.

I've found one with a higher capability CPU, but I can't find enough information to tell how good the available GPU is. It is available with a Quadro P620. What is the expected performance of that card compared with a GeForce GT 1050 or a GeForce GT 545?

Cards with a recommended power system power supply greater than 300 watts are not of interest for this.
