Mike,

Question? We've apparently been getting considerable quantities of new users each day. But the number of users with recent credit has not increased significantly or certainly not with any correlation.

Call me paranoid but this smells of bot activity.

Could this be a very slow burning attack on Primegrid?

Surely all those new users don't sign up and then don't crunch anything. Just sayin, it looks suspicious.

Maybe it's normal. Any thoughts?

There are constant spam attacks on all BOINC sites. One type of attack involves creating hundreds of bogus users each day in order to promote links to counterfeit designer goods, pornography, miracle drugs to enlarge various body parts, and so forth. While we've been blocking the links for years, I recently wrote something that would go and delete all traces of these bogus user accounts. When I first turned it on, it deleted about 700 thousand user accounts out of a total of about 1.1 million.

These bogus accounts (and other spam such as forum posts) have been occurring for almost as long as PrimeGrid has existed. Most people never notice it because the various layers of countermeasures we employ are, in aggregate, pretty effective.

Thanks Mike,

Have these people nothing better to do? :) ok if they fool 1% of the population that's a considerable return, but are we all not becoming more savy to the prince from Africa who needs to put 40 million in our account? It's just annoying at this stage.

I still get calls from Microsoft telling me I've a virus on my pc. Tiresome. I've taken to stringing them along for 30 minutes ( making out I'm a fool) then explain that I have no pc, however I have a toaster, could that have a virus? ;)

Hopefully it will get as boring for them as it is for us, soon. ;)

Those stats are scary mind you. Well done on counter measures though. Pity we can't return the attack. .......or can we ;) nah ... bad thoughts ;))))))

From a recent training exercise I participated in it was determined that people will throw sense out the window when faced with the prospect of an appropriately sized reward.

Probably right. But I was thought from an early age " you get nothing, for nothing" and to be suspicious of something that "seems to good to be true" simple advice but should be thought to all children. Being tech savy is not the issue. Just common sense.

You're missing the entire point of those scams. Really.

You have to be pretty stupid to fall for the "Nigerian Prince" scam, right? That's the point.

There's two parts to scams like that. Part one is very inexpensive to operate, and consists of completely automated computer spam. The second part is expensive, and is comprised of actual people, who need to get paid, who answer the inquires of the suckers who take the bait.

You do not want your employees wasting their time answering the inquiries of people who are too smart to fall for the scam.

You want the initial spam to filter out the smart ones. You only want the really gullible ones responding.

Those Nigerien Prince scams are easy to spot, by design. The ones who take the bait are the type of people those scams are specifically designed to ensnare.

but are we all not becoming more savy to the prince from Africa who needs to put 40 million in our account? It's just annoying at this stage.

No you're right of course. But do people not learn from mistakes anymore. Do they not hear other examples of people getting stung, and get prepped to deal with it, in advance. I just thought it would have gone "viral" and it would become ineffective by now. But alas.....

I still get calls from Microsoft telling me I've a virus on my pc. Tiresome. I've taken to stringing them along for 30 minutes ( making out I'm a fool) then explain that I have no pc, however I have a toaster, could that have a virus? ;)

Hopefully it will get as boring for them as it is for us, soon. ;)

They won't stop until they stop getting people to sign up, TWO of my neighbors did!! One of them even gave them his credit card number, which promptly denied THREE charges to his card..he is 75 years old. The other neighbor got to the point of them asking for the credit card number and hung up, thankfully they hadn't installed anything yet. They both asked me to check their pc's but I referred them to a local computer company that does that stuff for a living and now all of their pc's are clean. The 75 year old guy got SOOOO many phone calls on his flip phone that he had to change phone numbers to stop the calls. Obviously he had no clue he could go into his account and block phone numbers.

Me I too string them along telling them I have an old pc that takes a bit to boot up, more than 10 minutes sometimes, and then when they get to the point of telling me to press certain keys I tell them that I don't have those keys and after some blaming each other for being stupid I tell them it's a Linux or Mac machine. One guy even had the nerve to tell me 'oh we fix Mac's too' even though he swore he worked for MicroSoft. I usually keep them on the line until they hang up, just like I do with the calls post election when people want to know how I voted.

I am pretty sure you can only obtain the Shut UP! badge (in practice) if you are a bot. Of course this implies something about the nature of Michael Goetz, but it is not too surprising after all, is it? No human can be so correct all the time. /JeppeSN

There was an example about a year ago of someone locally (in Greece) who not only fell for this scam but took things a step further by flying to Nigeria to get his money back from the "bankers". He never came back (alive). :-(

Hoo hoo!
I had a live one on the phone just now. Indian accent.
From the background sound, calling from a busy sweatshop.

Hello. This is ... from Windows support.

Oh! Great, wait a minute.
* Takes a leak
* Puts on some pants (EDIT: well, he did wake me up out of bed)
* Unplugs the radio in the kitchen
* Comes back to Linux computer
* Pauses the Genefer 17 MEGA task for good response time
* Finds this thread
* Post to thread
* Puts the phone on speaker mode

Hello. Hello. Anyone there?

<dead silence>

Awww. I took too long LOL.
* Post reply

EDIT: persistent ****ers.
They left a blank message on my voicemail earlier today.
At least now I know who's been calling from that number over the last while.

At least now I know who's been calling from that number over the last while.

If the caller ID Number is not blocked you can go to 800notes.com to see if any on else has posted about it or try doing a www search for the number.

I get on average 3 to 5 "junk/spam" just on my land line and one or two such calls on my cell# every day.

My general rule is if the caller is not in my contact list, I do not answer and let voicemail take it if they even let it ring that long. Most of them only let it ring 4 or 5 times before hanging up. My voicemail is set for 6 rings.

I use a free call blocking service provided by my telco on my land line called NomoRobo.com that blocks over 99% of these junk callers. Works great!

I have it setup on my cell phone too, that may not be free though, but a couple bucks a month is well worth it for me. I also saw the other day that T-Mobile, I think, is auto blocking over a million calls per day that are coming from 'spoofed' numbers.

Its good to hear that others are also making an effort to waste the time of the phone scammers. I usually have quite a fun time finding new ways to string them along, and its always fun to hear what they say when they realize they have been scammed out of their time. I figure a few things: 1) it may have saved one actual vulnerable person from getting a call, and 2) unless they are involved in slavery, they probably have to pay real money to the folks making their calls, if enough of us waste enough of their time and money, maybe it just wont be worth the time, money, and legal risk to continue.

Happy scammer-scamming!
