I am getting an old desktop which I am not sure if there is a windows product key for it to reinstall windows or if it even is a recent version of windows...

I was contemplating installing LINUX on it as it is only going to be used for BOINC crunching. I have no idea the hardware specs yet.

What would be the best free version of LINUX to install on it? This will be my first time using LINUX again in almost 20 yrs.

You'll get a lot of answers...

Mine is if you want a Windows-ish GUI, get Ubuntu.

If you want just a command line interface, or this unit will be headless and you'll be ssh-ing into it, get Debian.

A favourite of mine is Linux mint, Mate version or Cinnamon. Based on Ubuntu, but more of a windows feel.

So far liking Ubuntu. Up and running BOINC in less than 2 hrs. Got seti going first b4 I went to work, but now that I THINK i installed the boincmgr I will see about adding other projects. I vaguely remember the command line stuff, but like I said it's been 20yrs and A LOT has changed. I used to have to install Xwindows... no need for that anymore. The command line stuff will take getting used to, but every command I've learned today all has great help lists describing each command syntax.

It's a decent 2 core processor, not the best, but this was a free machine, so I am very happy with it. RAM upgrade already ordered up. Upgrading from 1gb to 8gb for $34.

PrimeGrid project being added next after dinner.

It was neat to be able to get the BOINC package installed with a simple command line.

ah yes and the rediscovery of super user (su) :) needed that to set the permissions on the bionc-client/projects directories so I could add an app_config.xml file.

But, finally, the first PrimeGrid task is crunching on Linux using 2 threads! SCHWEETNESS :) Less than 12 hrs after picking up this box.

I really forgot how nice Linux is. There seems to be very little CPU Usage overhead in the background as well. Seems to be a nice way to go for BOINC projects.

The only problem I have with it is Linux isn't easy, for us old Windows guys, to setup so I can remote in via VNC or whatever. I also have Linux running on a dual core machine. One of the nice things about Linux is you can take the same harddrive and put it in a quad core machine for example and Linux will figure it out and boot up just fine. For a Boinc only machine that needs some work that's great!!

"su" is switch user. It defaults to root without arguments,
but you can use it to login as any user.
If you use it as root you do not need to provide a password.

Welcome back to Linux.

Thanks. Alwasy good to be back and see what's going on.

ic, makes sense su would mean that. Thanks for the information. Its not quite like riding a bike, but it's quite fun to relearn this.

sudo I had to use to install the boinc-client and boinc-manager programs. Without me googling, what does sudo stand for?

ah yes and the rediscovery of super user (su) :) needed that to set the permissions on the bionc-client/projects directories so I could add an app_config.xml file.

I haven't even begun to try remote logging in. I used to do that for the servers at my last computer job but all is since forgotten. But I am confident and willing to figure it all out again.

Yeah for BOINC it's the perfect OS. I had no idea it comes with stuff like Firefox and LibreOffice. Very cool. I Can't wait to see how much smoother it will run when the RAM is maxed out at 8gb. 1gb is just sad these days. But it does run pretty well considering.

"switch user and do" i.e, execute a command as another user,
which is used in the same way as "su".

There is is also a file /etc/sudoers which controls sudo permissions.
For example: root privileges can be granted to a trusted user.

ps. You could use "man sudo" instead of googling,

You might rather add the group boinc to your user

EDIT: ... ok let's be specific

su
usermod xxx -a -G boinc # add boinc group to your user xxx
chmod -R g+w /var/lib/boinc-client # makes the boinc client directory contents writable by boinc group members
find /var/lib/boinc-client -type d -exec chmod g+s {} \; # makes boinc the default group for all new files

so that any files you deposit there inherit the group (otherwise your user's default group is used and boinc can't use them).

At work #1 it's RHEL on all servers and at work #2 it's Mint on the desktop and CentOS on the server.

Debian for a client's plastic formulating/mixing machine several years ago.

At home, I used Ubuntu for around 5 years, then the too-frequent changes to the desktop annoyed me.

So I switched to Linux Mint. But after the LibreOffice 4 fiasco I wanted to be distant from Ubuntu and Mint. So then Linux Mint Debian Edition (LMDE) was it but that's more hands-on than plain Mint. LMDE kept losing the proprietary nvidia graphics driver every time a kernel update came along. So now I use straight-up Debian.

Prior to Ubuntu I had used a variety of distros. Red Hat, Mandrake, SUSE, and maybe Debian at some point. So long ago, I forget what. Anything else than what's Iisted here was just a short experiment.

And I digress...

My biggest disappointment (losing a video driver was only a frustration) was a version of LibreOffice 4 Calc in which some developers had decided that Microsoft Excel was sorting cell references in ranges incorrectly. So the formulas in an important spreadsheet broke when the references got mangled upon sorting a range. It turned out there's been a long-running red-pill vs blue-pill debate about the behaviour of cell references when a range is sorted. I was hopping mad that LibreOffice QA could let such an Excel-incompatible change leak through, and that the distro (Ubuntu/Mint) picked it up on top of that. So I went upstream and installed a newer version and held onto that until the distro caught up.

Both camps could be made happy by making the behaviour a selectable option, but that doesn't work especially well as a global setting, since some spreadsheets might be designed for one way while others oppositely. So then it's a spreadsheet property. Oh wait! Maybe you want both behaviours in the same spreadsheet, then it's a range property! Just one more thing to confuse the poor novices. The last form is the most flexible but sometimes flexibility should give way for simplicity. I wonder what it's at now.

Hey I thought one of the attractions to Linux was it was free. Looks like someone at IBM got ripped off.

Nope IBM wanted the Cloud Storage that Red Hat built up, and besides Red Hat Linux provides tech support so is not free, there may be a free version but there forte is tech support so they do charge for their software. Apparently though the Cloud Storage is top notch and IBM purchased it inside of just competing and doing their own, the rest came along for the ride.

Yeah, I have known about Red Hat forever. Why I asked about a FREE version not knowing there were over a half dozen good ones out there.

Where is TUX the Penguin? Maybe he's my cousin :)

Another thing to consider is how many people around here use version X of Linux. The more people using whatever you're running, the easier it is to get help here. Same thing on the web. The more popular the distro, the more likely you are to find specific answers to your question that actually will work on your computer.

There are some major differences between distributions, in particular with regards to how software packages are installed.

Absolutely. I have noticed that with my various google searches. Not all distributions install stuff the same. Some have nice stuff in their own software repositories while others do not.

As a crunching machine, I'm happy with Ubuntu so far, but have nothing else to compare it to. Perhaps my next project will be to install Linux Mint and see how that goes. Seems to be another fairly popular distro.

Hope it is helpful to add my two penn'orth at this late stage -- I only just saw this thread and thought I would share my experience from 2017.

Another twist to consider is to install Linux cli only (in my opinion the Debian net install disk is the way to go on that).

Install boinc-client rather than boinc. If you install the full boinc into a cli machine then it pulls in a lot of graphics stuff.

Edit the boinc config files to allow rpc access from other machines on your local network (you put a password into one file, and a list of IPs into another, if I remember right).

Then in Boinc Manager from your Windows machine on the same LAN, you can open another Boinc window and attach computer.

Depending on the Linux distro, it often works right away. In some cases you will also need to remove firewall protection that the distro devs thought you would like.

Only downside is that it is so much like running Boinc on the same machine that sometimes you forget which client this Boinc Manager window is talking to.

A final option is to download and run Boincview (which has not been updated for years, but still runs OK under Windows, and runs reasonably under Linux using Wine). Boincview is a GUI specifically designed to display and control up to a dozen or twenty crunchingboxes, one of which might or might not be the local host. It used to be a pain to read the small print and tiny icons, but modern monitors remove that problem.

In the TDP 2017 I was running eight identical PCs, none of them with GUI, all of them controlled form a Boincview running on a laptop. And I also ran that hardware when we had an AP challenge that year, and one of my boxes found an AP and altogether they were wingboxes for about ten more.

If I remember right, those boxes were about 3% faster running without graphics as compared to running Linux with Graphics. Windows was not considered because I did not have access to eight Windows licences (that might or might not matter to you -- but with Linux legal and free my thought was why break the law?).

I tell a lie: the boxes did have stickers entitling me to run Vista on them...
