Every time I de-select this subproject it keeps re-enabling itself.

It appears that you've figured it out on your own. You need to uncheck the "use CPU" box at the top of the preferences page. As long as that is checked, the server will send you something, and if you don't select anything the least intrusive CPU task gets selected. Currently, that's the GCW sieve.
