SoB LLR Silver: Earned 100,000 credits (324,939)
Message 118666 - Posted: 15 Jun 2018 | 11:26:17 UTC

For the moment I have accomplished three SoB tasks and got al silver badge. I have learned to find the k and n of my tasks (in the input file).
Question: Can I have the residue of my accomplished tasks as a "souvenir" ?

It's actually a good thing you asked. Normally, each of those lines should be the entire contents of the output from your task. This is the actual content from one of yours:

(All three tasks showed the same behavior.)

Those error messages are reporting the failure to write the checkpoint file to disk. Without a checkpoint file, the task needs to run uninterrupted from beginning to end. Any interruption and either the task will need to start over at the beginning, or the task will fail.

This is not an expected behavior, and is often a symptom of a faulty BOINC installation, although there are many potential causes.

Yes, it's hexadecimal. RES64 and OLD64 are merely different ways of tabulating the residue.

In case I wasn't clear enough in my first reply, there's a problem on your computer that you really should remedy. Especially with such an old and slow computer where many days are invested in each SoB task, it would be a shame to needlessly have tasks failing after many days of computation.

I have finished my 4th task
llrSOB_284807112_1

It has been validated.

Can I have the result, my RES64 ?

To receive this result is not yet automated.

Can I find it myself somewhere?

It's of no particular value to anyone, so no, we don't make it available automatically. When I gave you the other residues that was to satisfy your curiosity, but that was a one-time occurance.

If you have a reason why you need the residues, please contact me privately via PM.

Can I find it myself somewhere?

To find the residue yourself, when the job is about to finish suspend network activity under the Activity menu (this is in the BOINC client on your computer). In the PrimeGrid project directory of the BOINC client there are a bunch of files.

For example, I tested with an SGS job. The result name was llrSGS_302227713_1. I have a file:
llrSGS_302227713 wrote:
100000000000:T:0:2:3
4012715779107 1290000

That means the candidate is 4012715779107*2^1290000-1. If and only if that candidate tests as prime, LLR will then test 4012715779107*2^1290000+1 looking for a twin prime.

When that job finishes there is another file
llrSGS_302227713_1_0 wrote:

Turn network activity on again so that result uploads and the client then reports that job as completed.

21181*2^25307132+1 is not prime. RES64: 2DD02DBCEC6F5479. OLD64: 89708936C54DFD66 Time : 1645841.513 sec

So is this the kind of output that you see that prompts an actual prime check Michael?, except it's "xxxxx*2^25307132+1 IS prime?

Do you receive and email or some alert or do you have to scan the logs by eye?
Always wondered how the excitement starts :)

Cheers

Rob

There's an admin screen that lists all current primes, even those where only a single result is returned so far. It also shows all the false primes. For example there are currently two Woodall primes showing. I know they're false because the same computer returned both of them. That screen also shows when those primes are disproven. Hosts that have disproven primes show up in a different color so we know to not to get excited about any new primes they return.

When we get two matching results and the validator gets that workunit, it sends out emails to the admins about conjecture and GFN primes. For most conjectures, we've known about new primes for days before because of the prime list page.

There's also a prime reporting page where primes are reported to the Top 5000 Primes site. That process was never completely automated, but the prime reporting page does all the grunt work involved in reporting primes. It keeps track of T5K accounts and proof codes, for example. That prime reporting page also sends out emails to users after their primes are reported.

CLARIFICATION:

I did not offer to provide residues to anyone who PMs me. As far as I am aware there's no reason anyone needs this information, and I am not going to manually look them up for everyone running tasks here.

I answered one person's question -- in public -- so that he and others could see what the results look like, as an example. The actual results of individual tasks, once they've been validated, are of no value or interest to anyone. (Unless, of course, they're prime, but we notify you when there's a prime.)

If -- and only if -- you think you have a legitimate reason why you need this information, then please send me a private message explaining this need.

Thanks for the explanation.
It's nice to have an idea of how these things happen.

Thanks Jim and Michael. Totally agree with Eudy, the background is facinating for us on this side. No idea why really. Just mysterious I guess. Nice to have a feel for it now.

Cheers
