2018 seems to be a year of records....And we are only in March :D
We have certainly found a lot of very large primes over the last year and a half. I attribute that to improvements to both the Genefer and LLR software, as well as significant improvements to CPUs and GPUs. And dumb luck. :)

That's the 10th mega prime of this month, a new record for March. That ties the second highest number of mega primes in any single month, which was set in February of last year. The record, 16, was set in February of this year.
It's the 21st GFN mega prime of the year. That's a new record -- and we're still in the first quarter of 2018. The old record, 20, was set last year.
It's 33rd mega prime of 2018. The record for mega primes in a calendar year is 61, set in 2017.

EDIT 2: Overall, PrimeGrid has found 24 of those 53 2-million digit primes, and we're also credited as participating in the discovery of a 25th which was found by the PSP project. 13 of the known 2-million digit primes are Mersenne primes found by GIMPs.

#231 is a PPS-MEGA
As I am stopping our big bunch of VMs this week, I am doing mostly short tasks. This includes a lot of PPS-MEGA, around 7000 tasks per day, so I am not really surprised to see some primes coming out.
I DCed 3 PPS-MEGA during this rush, which probably helped in getting so many Primes in a few days. My 2000 cores are now gone and the number of LLR taks per day dropped accordingly, so it could take longer for the next ones. See the step down on March 31st :

This covers many different projects, so it can't be explained by just being lucky and hitting a "prime-rich patch". While most of this is in fact due to very significant increases in available computing power, there is one other important component. The projects PrimeGrid chooses to run have a large impact on the number of mega primes found.
For example, we have two projects specifically designed to find mega primes: PPS-MEGA and GFN-17-MEGA. Overall, those are the two projects where the most mega primes have been found (107 and 40, respectively.)
Looking beyond those two tailored projects, the project selection still plays a large role. Consider the size of the numbers being tested...
Below one million digits: It's literally impossible to find mega primes, by definition. Zero mega primes here. No matter how long you run SGS, you're not going to find any mega primes.
Significantly above one million digits: I'm not even talking about projects like SoB and PSP, but even 321 is currently too large to find a lot of mega primes. The primes are a lot rarer, and the tests take a lot longer. You'll find mega primes, but not many.
Just above one million digits: This is the goldilocks-zone. The closer you are to one million exactly, the more mega primes you'll find.
Even though PPS-Mega and GFN-17-MEGA are relatively new projects, those two account for 147 of our 243 total mega primes. The next most prolific are SR5 (26) and GFN-18 (22).
Conjectures with lots of k's such as SR5 are interesting in terms of finding mega primes. At the beginning, there are none because the numbers are less than a million digits. As soon as they pass a million digits, there's a flurry of mega primes. Once the numbers get significantly beyond a million digits, the mega primes become much less frequent. SR5 mega primes, by year:
2012 and earlier: 0
2013: 2
2014: 13
2015: 3
2016: 6
2017: 2
2018: 0 (so far)

There's a couple of ways that can go. Some people probably are avoiding the double checks for the reasons you say, but others are putting everything they have into the double checks because they're different, exciting, and necessary to make sure we didn't miss something big.
The fact that we seem to be finding a lot of GFN primes (GPU based) as opposed to CPU based project primes likely points to a lot of CPU power being used in the double checks and the GPU power going into GFN to find primes while the CPUs are very unlikely to by doing the double checks.
Or I could be way off base.
BTW: PSP double check is done.
