EDIT: The new badge system is live. Click here to skip to the message announcing the new badges.

Hopefully, anyway.

I plan on adding a new feature for this year's TDP. Not only will there be the usual four badges/jerseys, there will be new badges for everyone who gets on the TDP leaderboards.

The following is tentative and subject to change. I'm still working on the design.

There will be a badge designating that you found a prime during the 2018 TDP. The badge will include the number of TDP primes you've found, i.e., the badge includes a counter. There will be a similar badge for TDP mega primes, also with a counter. For all you overachievers out there, the counters will stop at 99.

There will be two more badges/counters for 2018 TDP Mountain Stage primes and mega primes.

Each year there will be a new set of badges, same as with the original jersey badges.

If this isn't ready by February 1st, as long as it eventually is built, the badges can be applied retroactively. I am not, however, planning on retroactively granting badges for previous years' TDPs.

Although I'm not certain of the design at this point, it's my intention that this should be usable with any type of badge award. This opens up the possibility of other types of non-credit badges in the future.

How about something like this for the general primes:

And something like this for the Megas:

This is just a quick draft I did modding the first TDP badge I saw, I'm sure we can polish it a bit.

For all you overachievers out there, the counters will stop at 99.

That would be a nice problem to have :) I'm curious how many primes the "quantity" finders were in past years, but not quite enough to actually go and find the result posts this moment.

57 Is the most primes in the last few years.

In 2011 we had 136 primes, but much smaller primes were eligible back then.

So can you give us a sneak preview on what projects will count toward the TDP this year or is that still to be decided?

Cheers

There's no secret. Same thing as every other year: it's anything that is eligible for T5K. That means all prime (or PRP) projects except SGS and GFN15.

I assume AP wouldn't count as too small too?

"some" more? As in, more than the "26"? Well, presumably there will be a "27" eventually, and higher... any others? I went through the top 1000 and didn't see anything else, unless I blinked and missed it.

Ok, I has got to get me one of those... this might take some time as I don't even have a 24!

Here's the official rundown on the new badges.

All of the new badges below have a new feature called a "counter". If you achieve the badge twice, a "2" appears on the badge. The counters go up to 99.

For TDP there will be 4 new badges, starting in 2018. They are not retroactive to prior years. Unlike the jerseys, these badges are available to everyone who earns them. The jerseys will continue to be awarded as in previous years.

Awarded for finding a prime during the Tour de Primes.
Awarded for finding a mega prime during the Tour de Primes.
Awarded for finding a prime during the Tour de Primes Mountain Stage.
Awarded for finding a mega prime during the Tour de Primes Mountain Stage.

The rest of the badges are retroactive and have already been granted to anyone who has earned it in the past.

Awarded for finding an AP26.
Awarded for finding an AP27.
Awarded for finding a mega prime. I.e., a prime with at least one million decimal digits.
Awarded for finding a prime in one of the conjecture projects, and thereby eliminating a 'k'. The conjecture projects are SoB, PSP, ESP, TRP, and SR5.

The badges have mouseover text that display exactly what the badge is for. Images in forum posts can't have mouseover text, but you can hover over the real badges under my name to see examples.

Nice. Scroll up to the post by tng* in this thread to see a badge where the "counter" is visible. To see a two-figure count, see e.g. a badge of Randall J. Scalise. /JeppeSN

An addendum:

With regards to conjecture primes, we have discovered that some of the primes for which people were credited with discovery in the ESP project were actually rediscoveries of primes that were already known. Apparently this wasn't checked before the ESP project was started.

Those primes have been removed from the database. As a result, the following people's "conjecture k" badges have had their counters reduced:

Lennart: 7 k's removed, badge goes from 29 to 22
Geeknik: 1 k removed, badge goes from 3 to 2
Pilgrim: 1 k removed, badge goes from 6 to 5
marvik: 1 k removed, badge removed.

On the opposite side, when checking SR5, we discovered that a lot of the early primes were entered in T5K without crediting PrimeGrid, and as a result the automatic process didn't assign T5K links in our database. Those links have now been added.

Our database isn't perfect, but we correct mistakes whenever we find them. Apologies for the confusion.

HFor TDP there will be 4 new badges, starting in 2018.

Will the overall TdP badges be inclusive of the mountain stage, so that finding a prime during the mountain stage results in both badges?

I thought I had one, but on closer look it was a generalised fermat divisor. I take it that is the key distinction? In that group, SG and twins are incredibly rare, and while I don't know, I assume generalised fermat divisors are not in that class.

I guess with those two new badges, "Full Sets again" will be a bit more challenging :-)

A lot more challenging. Those aren't the only new badges.

So I suppose the question becomes, what is a "full set". If it indeed includes these new badges, will anyone ever claim a full set again? I think "full sets" need to be confined to badges that change color, and use some other term for these new super sets.

I ask this because I was really looking forward to my gold announcement in the not too distant future! I'd hate to think this thread has become passe .. ;-)

I'd go with the "option 2" in the first post.
"2. A full set of 16 badges representing all ACTIVE sub-projects"
So a badge for each active sub-project. That would not include suspended or retired sub-projects, specialty badges, or TdP jerseys.

"Option 1" "1. A full set of all 20 badges representing all 20 possible project badges." isn't really attainable for anyone new anymore given that several projects are either suspended or retired and that happened before many people joined.

I guess with those two new badges, "Full Sets again" will be a bit more challenging :-)

The AP26 and AP27 badges are the most challenging ;-)

So I suppose the question becomes, what is a "full set". If it indeed includes these new badges, will anyone ever claim a full set again? I think "full sets" need to be confined to badges that change color, and use some other term for these new super sets.

I don't think ANYTHING has changed in that regard.

There were always one-of-a-kind TdP badges that were never considered part of a "full set".

There are more badges now, but they're not part of the regular set of credit badges anymore than the TdP badges are.

And even within the credit badges, there are unavailable badges and we don't count the old ones as part of "the set".

And, of course, a full set of "gold" badges, or any other color, is meaningless in the context of the new badges.

A full set of "gold" badges means the same thing it always have -- it's a goal to achieve. That hasn't changed.

This certainly is not going to change how I treat the concept of a "full set".

What does change is that perhaps there will be more awareness of all the interesting goals that are available, as well as all the opportunities to be the first person ever to discover something that right now is unknown.

The SGS pair and twin prime badges may be even harder to get than the AP27 badge.

On the other hand, probably the easiest of the new badges to get would be the mega prime badge (running PPS-MEGA on a CPU and GFN-17-Mega on a GPU) and the TdP prime badge, running PPSE-LLR on the CPU and GFN-16 on the GPU during the month of February.

Should not the BADGE list page list what the new badges are for? When you click one of the new badges it just goes to the top of the prime list, but it does not tell what those badges are for. So the new ones could nicely be also listed on the bottom of the of the page that actually says badge list page.

The mouse-over text for each new badge tells what it's for.

The links are to the most appropriate page, which for many of the badges like the mega prime badge is the user's prime list.

TDP badges (new and old) link to that year's TDP standings.

Credit badges link to the user's badge page.

AP26/27 badges link to the AP page for all of PrimeGrid.

There's always room for improvements and I'm open to suggestions.

What kind of improvements would you like to see?

Also, I'm not sure what you're referring to when you say "BADGE list page". This page http://www.primegrid.com/show_badges.php?userid=39821, the literal user badge page, doesn't show any of the special badges. It's more aptly described as the "User's next credit badge" page based on what it does, and what it was intended to do.

The page you linked is the one that I had in mind. The issue with text boxes on the badges themselves is that the text does not stretch much even when you have the browser in large type. So sight impaired people cannot see them. Since currently I have limited sight due to cataracts, I cannot read that small type. The surgeries are scheduled, but due to insurance limitations I have to deal with this for a couple more months as they keep getting worse. It always has bothered me that it is small and harder to see in normal sighted time, now it's even more frustrating.

Michael,
Had to LOL at the "Shut Up!" badge. Also noticed that (at the time of this post) you have 10,001 posts and the badge is for 10,000. Making personal badges now? :)

This is only my 50th post but it wouldn't take much effort to start doing small posts that add nothing to the conversation... just saying.

Glad you got a laugh out of it. :)

It's actually not one of the "new" badges -- it predates the new badge system, but nobody had "earned" it until now.

A couple of months ago I noticed two things. I was coming up on ten thousand posts, and that with around 110 thousand total posts on the forum, that was ridiculously close to 10% of the total. My first thought was, "You talk WAY too much!"

So I came up with the ugliest, most self-deprecating "award" I could think of. :)

When someone else comes anywhere close to that many posts (Rick Reynolds is closest, I believe, with about 5000), perhaps we should think of making the award more serious.

Interestingly, all of the most talkative people are in Aggie the Pew. The AtP team forum has about 25% of the total forum messages. The most talkative person not a member of AtP is John (5th). Like me, John was essentially the point person for talking to users, so you could say it was his job to post here.

The next highest non-AtP person is Rytis (6th), and again, you could say it's his job to post here.

After Rytis, the next highest non-AtP person is Honza, in 14th place. But Honza used to be one of the people in charge of manual sieving, so this still counts as "job".

In 18th is rroonnaalldd. He used to be involved in GeneferCUDA development.

Rogue is 19th. He's involved in all sorts of software development.

Lennart is 20th.

Sysadm@Nbg is 21st.

Ken_g6 is 25th.

[DPC]Charley is 26th.

Rebirther is 28th.

All of these were involved in running PrimeGrid or developing software for PrimeGrid in some way.

Finally, at 29th, is Rafael, with 760 posts on the forum. He's the most talkative person not in someway involved with PrimeGrid who isn't a member of Aggie the Pew.

One of the key things that has kept me interested and crunching for PG is the participation and quick responses in the forums of the people who have the extra titles listed after their name. Most of the other project forums I've seen, those people are truly "behind the scenes".
You may have vastly more posts than anyone else but they are posts of substance and always add something positive to the conversation. Change it to a "Most Helpful" badge and carry on.

Should not the BADGE list page list what the new badges are for? When you click one of the new badges it just goes to the top of the prime list, but it does not tell what those badges are for. So the new ones could nicely be also listed on the bottom of the of the page that actually says badge list page.

Okay...

So, I was thinking that having, say, the mega prime badge link to the user's list of mega primes rather than their entire prime list might be a little better. So now it does.

I did the same thing for the Fermat divisor badge.

The two badges in this post are linked as if they were Scott Brown's badges, so click on them to see the pages they link to. Is this better than merely linking to the user's entire prime list?

The other badges are a little more complicated, so I just changed these two. If people prefer this, I'll look into changing some of the others.

I like this very much. Any chance of something similar for SG and K? For K, it is more difficult I know since K counts for a number of projects so I imagine it would be a lot more work.

In any case, thanks for the work Mike! The new badges are a very nice addition. :)

In time. The others are less similar to what the primes page is currently capable of doing, so the changes are less trivial.

Can I get a badge for eliminating a "K" before PrimeGrid existed? I'm listed on http://www.prothsearch.com/rieselprob.html, as Kenneth Brazier.

I briefly toyed with a "C badge" for my profile picture. Then I thought, NAH! someone won't like it.

Michael,
Had to LOL at the "Shut Up!" badge.

And to me that's a badge representing PG itself too!! Without you guys posting about this and that and answering questions alot of people would be contributing like they are now!! All of that posting makes PG what it is today!! Waaaay too many other projects only post where they have too which is often days after a problem has been found and some kind of work is being done about it, PG is MUCH more pro-active in things and I for one LOVE IT!!

Hey, have you noticed any of the new badges looking at you weirdly? Some of the new badges on the Official PrimeGrid Badge List are said to be "staring in 2018". :P

I just want to get the site refined to a T. ;)

I briefly toyed with a "C badge" for my profile picture. Then I thought, NAH! someone won't like it.

That's actually a pretty cool idea.

Or how about "4". That's a little more subtle. (It's the first composite number.)

I like this very much. Any chance of something similar for SG and K? For K, it is more difficult I know since K counts for a number of projects so I imagine it would be a lot more work.

In any case, thanks for the work Mike! The new badges are a very nice addition. :)

The conjecture badges now link to your k-eliminating primes in the conjecture projects. Example: .

I forgot to mention this earlier. Forgive me if you already know about this...

If you're using Windows, one of the "handicap-accessible" features is the ability to magnify the screen by hitting Windows and keypad-plus key simultaneously. The entire screen gets expanded, including the mouseover text. You might find this useful. It also has an alternative "magnifying glass" mode that some may prefer.

I haven't checked, but I'd be surprised if similar features aren't available on all major operating systems.

The new idea I had for a badge was an overall achievement badge.

This would be granted for the total points across all PG projects (possibly still excluding the project staging area).

To be useful, the number of points needed would have to be more than for other subproject-specific badges.

I would suggest 10x the usual limits: so Bronze overall would be awarded at 100,000 total, Gold at 5,000,000 and so on. This would be easy to remember and understand

This would tend to encourage some people to diversify the projects they are crunching - anyone crunching eleven or more projects about equally would get to each colour level earlier overall than they would achive that colour on any of those projects.

My computers found:

9831*21441403+1 is a quadhectokilo prime prime, ie >400,000 digits ;)

252031090528237591 + 65521*149*23*19*17*13*11*7*5*3*2*n is prime for every n in { 0..20 } (an arithemtic progression of 21 primes)
