After a few weeks of running this project exclusively, I DCed my first prime which was pretty exciting! It came after 22415 tasks.
Just curious, for those of you running this project, what percentage of tasks result in a prime for you? I DCed another shortly after, so it's about 0.006% right now for me.
Also, since these primes are out of the 5000 range, what is the main reason you all run the project?
Have a great one! :) |

Congratulations!
From the project's perspective, the purpose of running SGS is to find an SGS pair or a twin prime. Those are really rare, however. I imagine most people run SGS because it's easy to find a prime.
It's still fun to find a prime, even if it's not recorded at T5K. It's still recorded here. People also run GFN15, which won't be recorded at T5K.
And there's lots of projects outside of PrimeGrid that are too small for T5K.

I've done 50120 tasks and found 7 primes (6 primary and 1 DC). So that's 0.014%
I run this project because it's available to be run and there's a badge for it.
It's also a good project to switch to before starting a challenge because the units are short and you can keep crunching with minimal lost time at the start of a challenge. But PPSE can serve about the same purpose.

My first prime was a DC of a SGS number. Exciting! Then I jumped over to PPS-Mega and was a DC on my first Mega prime! Fun projects. |

For me, it's 47777 tasks and 5 primes, including DC. That's 0.010% Note that I've been here long enough that a lot of those SGS tasks were on the previous range of SGS numbers, which were faster to test and more likely to yield a prime. So take all statistics with a large grain of salt.

Again, mine include the previous range as well.
I run it because my first "love" in prime searching was the Twin Prime Search (where I was given partial credit for the largest twin when n was 195000), and SGS was pretty much the evolution of that search.

Yes, used to be easier with smaller SGS (6-7 years ago).
1 056 342 tasks and 203 primes.
I should do a few more before SoB challenge.
The good think about SGS is that there are a lot more primes to find...

Technically, you didn't find an SGS prime. If you had found an SGS prime, it would be major worldwide news. What you did find was a common, everyday, ordinary prime during SGS prime search. We might have a million or more of these common primes, before we find a new actual SGS prime. |

Yep, the prime I found just a prime of the form n*2^x-1 :)
2*(n*2^x-1)+1 must also be a prime to find a sgs prime thats why I run sgs with the hope to find such a prime :) |

I think it ok to say SGS prime for "normal" primes found in the project, the last S being for Search and SGS referring to the project. However, it wasn't a SG prime. |
|
|
|
I agree , anyway it is hard enough even to catch a normal prime , it is a dream to find a SG. So we should be happy with primes we found under SGS project. Little or big I like all primes are great :)

As discussed in messages above, it's better to call it "SGS prime", not "SG prime" as it's not actually a Sophie Germain pair of primes. |
