With the year 2018 around the corner, it's time to put up a draft of the challenge schedule for next year.

2018 Challenge Series Start End Time UTC Project Challenge Duration 1 1-Jan 16-Jan 00:00:00 SoB LLR Happy New Year 15 days 2 16-Mar 23-Mar 18:00:00 321 LLR Year of the Dog 7 days 3 3-Apr 8-Apr 12:00:00 ESP LLR Mathematics Awareness Month 5 days 4 14-Jun 19-Jun 00:00:00 SR5 LLR World Cup 5 day 5 10-Aug 13-Aug 18:00:00 PPS LLR Solar Eclipse 3 days 6 15-Sep 22-Sep 18:00:00 Cullen LLR Oktoberfest 7 days 7 24-Oct 31-Oct 23:59:59 Woodall LLR Halloween 7 days 8 17-Nov 20-Nov 12:00:00 AP27 Conjunction of Venus and Jupiter 3 days 9 11-Dec 21-Dec 22:23:00 GFN 21 Winter Solstice 10 days

Thanks to everyone's input on the Ideas for 2018 Challenge Series thread.
Just to reiterate some of the thinking behind the challenge selection:
SoB LLR - Everyone's favourite. Helps with the double checking, size of the WUs at the time of the challenge will be somewhere in the range 17-25M.
321 LLR - Last challenge September 2017. Last prime n=11.8M, now up to 13.6M. Admins' choice.
ESP LLR - Needs some love. Last challenge September 2016. Last prime n=7.1M, now up to 10.9M.
SR5 LLR - Chance of hitting a prime is pretty high and tasks are not long. Last challenge March 2016.
PPS LLR - Primegrid's bread and butter, should definitely have a PPS challenge. This is planned to run without PPSE and MEGA.
Cullen LLR - last challenge (Cullen/Woodall) April 2016. Last prime n=6.6M, now up to 15M.
Woodall LLR - the last Woodall prime was at 3.7M, we're now up to 16M, so emotionally due for a prime.
AP27 - loved this challenge when it was last run in November 2016.
GFN 21 - Run a high n GFN challenge, i.e. GFN 21, we've never found a prime at this n.

A few general thoughts:
Most of our projects are BIG numbers, take a long time to run, and the challenges MUST be long to accommodate people with less than stellar setups. That includes everyone on AMD and/or mobile platforms.
Tour de Primes will be the whole month of February as usual.
It's considered bad luck to celebrate Chinese New Year before the date the actual new year starts, 16th Feb in 2018.
Challenge scoring for [3,5,7] day challenge same as last years for [1,3,5] days.
I'll keep this post updated as the details are fleshed out.

Finally, we're looking forward to a well behaved discussion about the proposed schedule.

Looks like I'm up for New Year then! Boom off we go!!!

I agree ESP needs love - I haven't done any myself this year & the timing is appropriate. 3rd April works (Debs' 30th...)

Won't be able to do October.

AP & GFN are in a good position.

I have some doubts if SoB challenge (Happy New Year) should start on Jan 1st, 00:00. Many people probably will celebrate new year away from their PCs. Some even may be not capable of joining at that time ;). I propose to start 1 day later, on Jan 2nd, 00:00.

Of course this depends on timezone, but for those people returning to work on the 2nd, starting a day late will not be as convenient as starting on a day where there is no work.

I have noticed the Hallowe'en 23:59:59 though ;).

It's a 15 day challenge. If it takes a little while to sober up, you won't lose that much.

Or just consider being there for the start a... wait for it... a challenge!

There's never been a good start time to suit everyone so it is part of the package as far as I'm concerned. If you wont be around either start late or rolling start early. I'll have to do the latter.

There's 17 days of challenge more then 2017. I think that's too much extra, however other then 1-3 days maybe off gfn21, 1-2 days off sr5 &/or esp, 1-2 days off pps. Or time off SOB which we don't want to reduce, I don't see a way to reduce the rest. I'm not asking to remove 17 or even 9 days off, just 62 days of challenge plus 28 for February, is alot of time in "challenge" mode.

There's 17 days of challenge more then 2017. I think that's too much extra ..

Actually, 2017 was supposed to include a 15-day SOB challenge that was dropped for the TRP-Sieve run out .. so not so different.

.. 62 days of challenge plus 28 for February, is a lot of time in "challenge" mode.
To each their own. I still haven't done a Tour de Primes for that very reason.

Anyone running any LLR or GFN project is technically participating in Tour de Primes. The biggest focus is on the projects that will produce the most T5K primes. However, if you were to run, for instance, PSP instead and find a PSP prime then you will most likely win one of the jerseys even if you weren't "participating".
If you are someone who brings on extra computers/running time for challenges then, yes, not participating would mean not doing those things.

Last year was the first time I "actively" participated in TdP, but all that meant for me was going for my PPS LLR ruby badge in February instead of another project.

This is a very accurate statement and which describes many of us. I plan to work on my Ruby badge for SGS during February since 28 days are just about right for me to get one million credits through the system so as to flip to Ruby.

> PPS LLR - Primegrid's bread and butter, should definitely have a PPS challenge. This is planned to run without PPSE and MEGA.

Love this. It will be interesting to see how far we get towards eliminating PPS (or I guess eliminating PPS Mega) by pushing the leading edge up to where PPS Mega started.

Oops, this is something I was not aware of. I will find another project and probably one not covered in 2018 as a challenge (ex GCW LLR).

Thanks for the heads-up.

I have some doubts if SoB challenge (Happy New Year) should start on Jan 1st, 00:00. Many people probably will celebrate new year away from their PCs. Some even may be not capable of joining at that time ;). I propose to start 1 day later, on Jan 2nd, 00:00.

For those of us who are not command-line-challenged, the solution to starting at a given time, while away celebrating, is trivial...

echo "cd /var/lib/boinc-client && boinccmd --project www.primegrid.com allowmorework" | at -t 201712311800.04

(or whatever your timezone and computer offset are).

EDIT: OOPS garbled the time. LOL. I'll fix that shortly
EDIT EDIT: fixed. Timespec doesn't allow seconds.
EDIT EDIT EDIT: Oh yes it does, different time option.

Ah well, not so trivial. My distro claims it will run at the top of the minute, ignoring the seconds. Safest to start the work at 1 minute past midnight. Give that, my command would be

echo "cd /var/lib/boinc-client && boinccmd --project www.primegrid.com allowmorework" | at 18:01 2017-12-31

Thanks for hint :)

One more command is needed to suspend already running tasks from other project. You also can use absolute path to boinccmd instead of cd'ing to dir where it is installed. And of course for Windows a bit different approach is needed.

You also can use absolute path to boinccmd instead of cd'ing to dir where it is installed. And of course for Windows a bit different approach is needed.

That's not the issue. The boinccmd command lives in /usr/bin which is on my path, and the command is not in the client data directory which is /var/lib/boinc-client (on this system). The command just refuses to work properly unless you are in the client data directory, or unless you supply the hostname and control the client "remotely".The BOINC wiki says
If you run boinccmd in the same directory as the BOINC client, you don't need to supply either a host name or a password.

I had trouble joining the project until I went into the client data directory to run boinccmd.

EDIT: You have to look in the client data directory to find the remote control password in gui_rpc_auth.cfg so might as well run the command there anyway.

Yep, I recall similar issue. But password can be inserted in a smart way into command. I have this in my /etc/crontab for LHC-dev and works fine for me:
0,30 * * * * boinc /usr/bin/boinccmd --passwd `cat /var/lib/boinc/gui_rpc_auth.cfg` --project https://lhcathomedev.cern.ch/lhcathome-dev/ update

You're using the Large Hadron Collider to do BOINC work?!?!
No wonder it took so long to find the Higgs LOL.

Just for the masses... I see you're actually doing LHC work with BOINC.

That's enough paronomasia for one post.

That's insecure.
`cat ...`
puts the password on the command line for everyone who is logged in to see. But if you have other people already logged in, you have bigger issues than exposing a BOINC remote control password.

I know. But this is on dedicated server, so in theory no one except me should be there. Everything except SSH is blocked on firewall, so I am only afraid of some 0-day in SSH-related stuff.

No one-day challenges either? This is rigorous.

There's only 2 sieve projects that are still running on BOINC, and 23 projects that are not sieves. Given those numbers, coupled with the fact that both the PPS and GCW sieves are sufficiently ahead of their associated LLR projects and don't need a lot of pushing, it's not unreasonable to have a year without a sieve.

There can't be a total until the cleanup for the Winter Solstice Challenge is complete. Until then we don't have final stats for that challenge.

Would it be possible to add a totals row in the stats, i.e. the pages like http://www.primegrid.com/challenge/2018_1/top_users.html?

Right now I can see, for example, zunewantan got a score of 30 million. But I cannot see the total contribution of all challenge participants, so it is a bit hard to relate to. If e.g. the total was 300 million, I could estimate that zunewantan did 10% of all work in the competition.

Just a nice-to-have suggestion.

A quick ad hoc JS run in the browser console gives an answer to that
The sum of all scores on that page is 581686765.93
(the script, using jQuery, below)
$.makeArray($('table tr').find('td:last').map(function(){ return parseFloat($(this).text()) })).reduce(function(agg, c) { return agg + c;}, 0)

Thanks, a very nerdy solution. You could also use spreadsheet software (e.g. Excel). But I still think it would be nice with a total on the page. /JeppeSN

Yeah. On the challenge pages all the overall links lead to a 3rd-party website charleygielkens.nl/pg, which would be a great place to have totals and whatnot added. But it seems to not be updated in 2017 at all.

I'm a web dev (among other things) and I've been thinking about replicating that in free time, and have the freshest data loaded. I can go for it, if there is interest and need.
