2017 is rushing towards its conclusion.
Ideas for 2018 challenges:
- Run a high n GFN challenge, i.e. GFN 21, we've never found a prime at this n.
- Run a Woodall Challenge, the last Woodall prime was at 3.7M, we're now up to 16M, so emotionally due for a prime.
- We want to run an SoB Challenge to push along the DC, also has the longest duration to previous Challenge of all the sub-projects.
- PPS is Primegrid's bread and butter, should definitely have a PPS challenge.

Sub-project - date of last challenge
321 - September 2017. Last prime n=11.8M, now up to 13.6M.
Cullen - April 2016. Last prime n=6.6M, now up to 15M.
ESP - September 2016. Last prime n=7.1M, now up to 10.9M.
GCW - August 2017. Last prime n=1.3M, now up to 2.2M.
PSP - April 2017. Last prime n=19.3M, now up to 19.4M.
PPS - June 2016. Last prime 2 days ago.
SoB - January 2015. Last prime n=31.1M, now up to 17.9M with the DC.
SR5 - March 2016. Last prime n=2.4M, now up to 2.4M.
SGS - June 2017. 5K+
TRP - October 2017. Last prime n=7.1M, now up to 8.8M.
Woodall - April 2016. Last prime n=3.7M, now up to 16M.
GCW Sieve - January 2017.
PPS Sieve - December 2017.
GFN - November 2017. Largest prime found at n=20.
AP27 - November 2016.

Feel free to comment.

SoB should do well - shorter tasks, MT support, good credit, fast validation and only few tasks would go to post-challenge validation.
I guess 5-7 days challenge would do and no need for 8 days.

Add SR5, hitting a prime is pretty high and tasks are not long.
Skip SGS.

Yeah, Woodall. If we hit a prime before challenge, substitute with Cullen, which is a bit overdue as well. Or combine them as we did in 2016.

I think anything we didn't do in 2017 should be a priority to do in 2018. Especially the SoB double check. With no SoB challenge since 2015 it's overdue even without the double check happening.
For Cullen and Woodall I am indifferent towards whether we do one longer challenge (10 days) of both or two shorter challenges of each (5 days).
If we do a PPS challenge would we want to have all PPS (PPSE, PPS, MEGA) or just PPS where we would make an effort to progress it towards MEGA's starting point (is that even a thing that can happen?)?
On SGS I am torn. On the one hand there's no more T5K reporting for that project; on the other hand we still do GFN-15 which is in the same boat. But GFN-15 is usually paired with other GFN projects in a challenge. So maybe we should replace the traditional 24 hour SGS with a 24 hour PPSE. At the same time though PPSE gets a lot of attention in TdP where SGS now will get none due to no more T5K primes to be found.

In no particular order, I think we should run the following this year:
SoB - 15 day
ESP - 5 day
CUL/WOO (together or separate) - 10 day together or 5 day separate
PPS (without PPSE and MEGA) - 3 day
SR5 - 5 day
AP27 - 4 day
SGS or PPSE - 24 hours
PPS-SV (seems to be an annual Winter Solstice challenge) - 3 days

I'm not thrilled about the idea of combining PPSE with PPS-MEGA, Little tasks produce lots of rows in the database, and long tasks have long cleanups which prevent all those short tasks from being purged from the database.

We're doing something similar right now with GFN15, GFN16, and GFN17LOW. It's not exactly the same, but I'd want to see how this challenge goes before signing off on a PPSE + PPS-MEGA challenge.

But GFN-15 is usually paired with other GFN projects in a challenge.

This will be the first time ever that GFN 15 has been part of a BOINC challenge.

Just PPS (no PPSE and no MEGA) would be my preference in that case.

I thought we had done GFN-15 in a combined challenge in the past. I should have fact checked before posting.

-SoB: Absolutely needed, we've gotta finish this double checking. I think 7 days is just about the right length, it's big enough to get work done while not being overly big to lose interest. Also, I propose TWO SoB challenges in the same year, as to please folks from both hemispheres and allow them to crunch their CPUs full power when they're at winter.

-Cullen and Woodwall challenges: Personally, I'm of the mindset that these should be a single project with a single badge; a "cullen only" challenge could help Cul catching up with Woo.

-ESP needs some love... btw, I'm also of the mindset of gluing PSP and ESP into a single thing.

-I like the idea of a GFN-21 challenge. Just 21, no 20 or 22, with the sole intent being to find the first n=21 prime, as well as the biggest GFN prime of all time (until we get the pseudo-WR n=22). If that's to happen, we can have a talk with JimB and go for a huge n=21 push on manual sieving.

-PPS, SR5, AP27: everything else not ran in 2017, aka "should probably run now".

I want a woodall, cullen, and sob challenge.

I'd like a 17 low only challenge but that might be unpopular with the combination one coming up.

Anything else I'm neither here nor there on.

I'll fit round whatever, although ideally no 321 challenge. Definitely worth a push with SoB, say at least a week.

OFF TOPIC

Cullen and Woodwall challenges: Personally, I'm of the mindset that these should be a single project with a single badge; a "cullen only" challenge could help Cul catchingup with Woo.
...
btw, I'm also of the mindset of gluing PSP and ESP into a single thing.

Combining badges was an idea that was already laid to rest on another thread. People love their badges, even those they don't have.

Also, I propose TWO SoB challenges in the same year, as to please folks from both hemispheres and allow them to crunch their CPUs full power when they're at winter.

My support for this idea is next to meaningless, but I'm voicing it anyway. I wouldn't be opposed to FOUR SoB challenges...

There's SoBstantial merit to having more frequent SoB challenges. Why stop at 4? Is there a particular range of consecutive dates in all months that has nothing scheduled? That would be good for a bit o' DC lovin.

There are other challenges each year as well, for examaple BOINC Pentathlon.
Folks and teams are trying to do well and when those are overlapping, it doesn't do any good.

Similar apply for total days for a year challenge.

SoB is fine, running it and will run it anyway :-)

Let's have a SoB "DC" marathon. All participants who can last for 1 year at a pledged resource commitment, with > 99% continuous participation at that commitment level, get the special DC badge with whatever colour they can earn.

EDIT: And if you don't make 99%, then prorate the points required for the badge colour: 50% participation means you need twice as many points to reach each badge level. Sorry, no bonus for under-promising and overdelivering.

IMHO, we need next challenges:
-SoB 15-day challenge(for DC)
-SR5 5-day challenge(Long time ago...)
-GFN21 7-day challenge(we have primes for n=15-20. It's time for 21)
-Cullen 8-day challenge (Last prime on n=3.7 million)
-PPS 3-day challenge(Long time ago...)
-ESP 10-day challenge(Long time ago...)
And PPS-sieve+SGS as always.

I agree with this selection but query do we need to promote PPS-Sieve as it already gets strong support due to its awarding high points.
SOB needs a good concerted effort.

Given there are generally 9 challenges per year totaling 45 to 60 days ..
this would be my take on it. I'll be happy with whatever comes up!

15 day - SOB
10 day - ESP
8 day - Woodall or Woodall/Cullen (I did like the mix of both, but would prefer Woodall)
5 day - ESP
3 day - PPS
1 day - SGS
3 day - PPS sieve or GCW sieve
7 day - GFN21
5 day - SR5

Just to put in my two cents worth, I'd like to see SoB (forward with the double check), AP27, GFN21 (let's find one), ESP, and TRP.
Don't do SGS or PPS sieve (I know, PPS Sieve is traditional, but it gets plenty of attention).

That is an interesting tally Roger.

Why do we have just 8 or 9 challenges? Could we make it 12 so we can rely on a PrimeGrid challenge per month? As some are only a day or a few days and the longest proposed is SoB at 15 days there is still plenty of time available for participants to participate in other project challenges.

How about a manual sieving challenge?

Probably not a good idea. I like the idea of encouraging people to trry manual sieving, but having a bunch of people jump in to run a challenge is likely to cause problems. They will jump in all at once, with no prior experience running manual sieving, and will make the manual errors which are inevitable with any manual process. At the end of the challenge, many of them will abandon their reservabations wiithout cnacelling them. All of these issues will have to be dealt with manually (i.e., by JimB).

I've thought about this, and I don't think it's a good idea. If JimB is willing to go for it, then fine, but I wouldn't if I were the one who had to deal with the issues.

I've asked about this long ago. To sum it up, it would cause A LOT of problems that would have to be dealt with, it would be to much work (even if everything went smoothly) and it's simply not needed. The couple few people running it is already enough. Sure, we could always use some more, but the whole PrimeGrid challenge army is way more than the "some" we'd want.

With that said, put it as a boinc subproject named "GFN 23 sieve for prime hunt" and I'm sure stuff would get real fun real fast :)

How about a manual sieving challenge?

On top of the other reasons (which are complete show-stoppers themselves), the manual sieving that's available now isn't available on CPUs, and is not available on Macs. Doesn't sound like a lot of fun for the people who would be excluded.

There's many other reasons why it's an extremely difficult proposition.

"Trainwreck of noobs"...!

Don't bother with blink-&-it's-over SG. Or PPS sv, even though it has the "you know it's nearly Christmas when..." effect.

Cullen & ESP yes please.

+1 for GFN21 and SoB.

Just for fun I counted up the votes from this thread.
Includes negative votes but not multiple challenges per sub-project or combined challenges.
01 SoB - 11 votes (all people voted for this one)
02 Woodall - 5 votes
03 PPS - 5 votes
04 SR5 - 5 votes
05 GFN 21 - 4 votes
06 ESP - 4 votes
07 Cullen - 3 votes
08 PPS Sieve - 2 votes (3 votes for, 1 against)
09 AP27 - 2 votes
10 SGS - 2 votes (3 votes for, 1 against)
=================================================
11 GFN 17 Low - 1 vote
12 PPSE - 1 vote
13 GCW sieve - 1 vote

Usually we run 8 or 9 Challenges. We've got 10 contestants left on the island.

Just to put in my two cents worth, I'd like to see SoB (forward with the double check), AP27, GFN21 (let's find one), ESP, and TRP.
Don't do SGS or PPS sieve (I know, PPS Sieve is traditional, but it gets plenty of attention).

There's many other reasons why it's an extremely difficult proposition.

Ain't there a CPU Sieve app, the AthGFNSV? Granted, it's bad to use, but at least it sieves... something. I guess...

I believe it's no longer useable (b cutoff is too low), but even if I'm wrong about that, it would't solve the Mac problem. Or all the other problems.

Just to be crystal clear, this is NOT going to happen for a variety of reasons. If we were to decide we needed to push GFN sieving, we'd simply say "Hey folks, we need to do a lot of GFN sieving to reach goal XYZ. Who wants to help?" We've never, ever, done any type of a challenge with manual sieving, and it's likely we never will. Remember, it's not just manual on your side, it's manual on our side too. Between the extra work and all the support teaching dozens or even hundreds of people to run this, it would be a disaster. "Support" here often includes things like "What's a command prompt?", so it's easy to understand why this isn't viable.

Oh, it does't work on Mac... classic. I should have guessed it.
