According to the task manager, running this sieve on my R9 270X takes up almost an entire CPU core, around 23% of my quad-core CPU (an Athlon X4 760K). Is this normal? I read that PPS sieve is an extremely efficient GPU app, so doesn't that mean that CPU load should be relatively low? I've run it before on Nvidia cards, but never bothered to check the CPU usage then, only noticed it with this AMD card I recently installed.

I have found very high cpu times on gpu tasks as of late in general. not sure if this is an actual change or just a reported change as everything seems similar with GFN maybe getting slightly better. I always leave 1-2 threads open though.

Certain GPUs seem to require more CPU attention on certain projects.

I have a Core2 Quad with 4 Tahiti GPU cores in it (dual 7990s). I cannot run 4 simultaneous PPS-Sieve tasks without saturating the CPU and as a result, GPU utilization drops (below 80%).

I have not seen this behavior with GFN, although I also have not run the smaller N tasks on this system, where I suspect I could run into a similar problem.

CPU load for GFN16 on the same card is only around 5-6%.

CPU load on a GTX 1060 6GB is between 6 and 8%.
