On 29 April 2017 14:06:48 UTC, PrimeGrid’s PPS Mega Prime Search project found the Mega Prime:

609*2^3392301+1

The prime is 1,021,188 digits long and will enter Chris Caldwell's The Largest Known Primes Database ranked 205th overall.

The discovery was made by User “jimmy” of Belgium using an Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-4790 @ 3.60GHz with 12GB RAM, running Microsoft Windows 10 Core Edition. This computer took about 1 hour 36 minutes to complete the primality test using LLR.

The prime was verified on 30 April 2017 11:22:53 UTC by Randall Scalise (Randall J. Scalise) of the United States using an Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-4590 @ 3.30GHz with 8GB RAM, running Linux. This computer took about 1 hour 14 minutes to complete the primality test using LLR.

For more information, please see the official announcement.

Pardon the intrusion, I've been wondering about the steps in the background when a new prime is discovered. Would some friendly person shed light on the huge gap between discovery and announcement? I've seen most primes being announced 1-4 days after discovery.

The process is explained here: http://www.primegrid.com/forum_thread.php?id=6605&nowrap=true#91814

In step 4a, the prime finder had not previously set up his reporting preferences, and thus we had neither his permission to report on his behalf nor his real name. He did not respond to our attempts to contact him. After 19 days, the prime was reported in the name of the double checker. That 19 days is why it took so long for this prime to be announced.

Thank you for that link and the full disclosure, that was a good read and there is a frightening large amount of work you guys do in the back which I didn't notice. I often pondered if there was a way to see it in my own output files, but waiting usually has been the better solution ;) I see now, this occasion here was a more rare case, at least for me.
