I noticed a new application called "PSP Sieve" listed on the Applications page. What's it supposed to be?

It's related to the new subproject "Prime Sierpinski Problem Sieve", I guess. ;)

Correct :)

Is it at all related to the Prime Sierpinski Project? If so, will it be using the combined or the not combined dat file? (I haven't done any work there as of yet, but have read some on their forums, and apparently they have two dat files, one for just PSP candidates, and the other with SOB candidates in there too.)

Yes, we'll be helping that same project. We'll be using combined sieve file.

Sound cool. :-) When is the expected release date here at PrimeGrid?

Thanks! I just got a workunit to test it out. On a side note: do sieve workunit pop up in the results tables? I cannot find them though.

Sounds cool!
But would you know, my machine just had to get a monster Riesel Sieve LLR workunit to throw things into EDF mode (it's a resend, like most of them are right now), just when I was looking forward to trying out one of the new PSP Sieve workunits! :-)

How about manual sieving? Is it possible?
Or it is only planned in this way? |

Manual sieving has been long available outside of PrimeGrid. See http://www.mersenneforum.org/showthread.php?t=2666.

Rytis, Did you reserve 4 500 000 G?????? (squared WTF).
Practically speaking, we are sieving this n range for all the 14 k´s in the game right now or is it different?
thanks
PS: later, reading, I found that the sieving is for the 14´s of the Prime Sierpinski project AND the left 7 left from the Seventeen or burst project... I answered myself.

I saw on the apps page, the only real 64 bit linux app is for PSP.
I have a 64 bit linux running (as vmware on a 32 bit windows), and so I tried to use start sieveing.
Using a new venue (home)I set only the PSP active.
Now I get :7-10-29 20:00:40 [PrimeGrid] Message from server: No work sent
2007-10-29 20:00:40 [PrimeGrid] Message from server: (there was work for other platforms)
2007-10-29 20:00:40 [PrimeGrid] Message from server: (There was work but not for the applications you have allowed. Please check your settings on the website.)
Is there no PSP work?
On the server status page it look like there is still some work.

We have no native 64bit Linux apps, you are probably confusing something. 64bit apps are only listed for Windows (hopefully this weekend things will change).
By the way, how did you manage to install 64bit Linux on 32bit OS? VMWare would not let me do that, and I'm running 64bit Windows...

Looks like. Double checked it.

boinc still running there, so Ill get the apps as soon as available.
Which programs will be in the first row?
(You might have understood, it makes no sence to use the 32 application, so I need to avoid the default fall back to 32 bit.

Was no problem for me.
I 've done it twice.
once with a semperon 64-bit without pacifica. so simply use vmware server and start the (debian) 64bit distribution.
Anf the other is a core 2. For this one I need to switch on the additional commands in the bois of the computer, but that all.

GCWsieve will probably be first, PSP sieve second.

Bad luck.
As GWCSieve already has a linux, I have to wait until it really exists to switch it on in the preferences.
(I don't remember a way to avoid the alternate platform, only downgrading might help.

Create a file cc_config.xml, with contents:
<cc_config>
<options>
<no_alt_platform>1</no_alt_platform>
</options>

I just looked through some files on one of my hosts running PSP Sieve (BOINC version, not manual sieving) and noticed that the currently used sieve-file was released on October 31th, 2007. As this was about 3.5 months ago I would guess that the number of factors should be much smaller now than the 2,135,464 factors listed in that file. I think it would be better to release a new sieve file without all those already removed factors to increase the overall performance in sieving. (At least for PSP sieve. I have now idea about the age of the input file for gcwsieve, but I would guess that they are quite old, too.)

Files are generally updated when there is a 3 to 5 percent speed improvement in doing so. For example, new gcwsieve was released last week (or was it two weeks...) ago. Gcwsieve files are created by an automated script in PG server.
PSP sieve file is updated when a prime is found. The sieve file is generated by an external entity.

In addition to what Rytis said, gcwsieve and sr2sieve (used for PSP sieve) are quite different programs when it comes to speed and the number of candidates remaining in the sieve file.
For gcwsieve, there is a direct relation in sieve speed and number of candidates in the sieve file. Therefore, new sieve files will be released more frequently than with sr2sieve.
As Rytis mentioned, it usually takes finding a prime (which removes many k/n pairs from the sieve file) before you'll notice a discernable speed increase with sr2sieve.
Of course, if we go several years without finding a prime, then maybe there will be enough factors found, and a new sieve file would be issued.
