From the looks of it, your PC is getting and crunching GPU tasks just fine. You don't need to do anything else.

I do not believe there is a way to directly limit gpu utilization. That is, there is no equivalent to the "use at most x% of cpu time".

In my experience once a gpu application executes, it is going to consume as much cpu (up to a core) and gpu as it can, and will tend to ignore any cpu constaints put upon it from, e.g. app_config.xml.

Hello,

according to my observations, tasks AP27 are not recommended while computer is using to browsing/watching/gaming (i have gtx 950 2gb - ap27 takes 1,4gb maybe that's the reason). PSP Sieve is much lighter. It uses a lot of less graphic card power (temperatures are also lower). Between PSP sieve and AP27 are GFN tasks. Browsing is still viable but slightly stutters, video works just fine.

Maybe it will be useful. It is important for me cause i have got only one PC ^^

hello all!
can't find where to set up max gpu usage
anyone can show me where to?

Max usage can mean several things. If you don't want to ever limit it running in Boinc, there are some choices you can make.

1) Under Options / Computing preferences make sure to uncheck Suspend GPU computing when computer is in use
2) Under Activity make sure to check Use GPU always

This will make sure the gpu is in use all the time.

To get a higher performance you will need to over clock the GPU. Be very careful doing this. You may already know how and the pit falls.

Van likes MSI Afterburner and once I got the latest version I do as well.

Cheers Rick

edit: I was answering alpha and I might have misread his question - if so then please disregard

TheDawgz think that the OP is looking to LIMIT the amount of GPU load not maximize it.

Try an underclock therefore via e.g Afterburner.

Do you need to set a particular % to preserve gpu capacity for something else running?

Or do you need to set a particular % to prevent the gpu from overheating or drawing too much power?

I'm not sure I understand the use case here.

If its the latter question, Dave's underclocking recommendation should absolutely do the trick, and you may be able to undervolt at the same time.

The Boinc software we use is made and maintained by the people at UCBerkeley and they have run out of funding and are no longer doing any kind of regular updates to the software at this point. In short it is what it is and only MAJOR problems will be addressed for the foreseeable future.

Per the question in the chat room, while not possbile to restrict GPU usage for a running task it is possible to restrict gpu running times, just not through BOINC.

For those operating systems where the client includes the command line tools (i.e. not macOS), you can create a start and a stop script for the GPU.

In windows, for example, the stop script would look something like:
"\Program Files\BOINC\boinccmd.exe" --set_gpu_mode never

and the start script would look like:
"\Program Files\BOINC\boinccmd.exe" --set_gpu_mode always

Set them up in Task Scheduler (or cron for other than Windows), and you are good to go. You may need to specify the drive letter where Program Files is located in the beginning of the path, e.g. "C:\Program Files..."

Actually, that's not true. There's a "Daily Schedule" tab in the BOINC preferences dialog that lets you set the days or times of days when BOINC is allowed to run. Assuming it works (I've never used it), it's certainly possible to limit BOINC to crunching only at certain times of the day. This feature has been in BOINC since the beginning, I believe.

Yes, but if you only want to stop GPU tasks and leave CPU tasks running, I believe you have to resort to scripts.

From the log, is it attempting to fetch them, and just receives zero tasks?

Also, is that the machine that once had a 780ti in it (although that shouldn't make a difference)?

My 290x (Hawaii, older) and my rx480 (Ellesmere, newer) both grab AP tasks without an issue, so I am a bit at a loss as to why Tonga would be a problem. It looks like you have no issue with Genefer (assuming I am looking at the right machine).

"C:\Program Files..."

should I make bat file like:
"c:\Program Files\BOINC\boinccmd.exe" --set_gpu_mode never 70
and there will be no more 70% gpu usage by boinc?

Do you need to set a particular % to preserve gpu capacity for something else running?

Or do you need to set a particular % to prevent the gpu from overheating or drawing too much power?

I'm not sure I understand the use case here.

If its the latter question, Dave's underclocking recommendation should absolutely do the trick, and you may be able to undervolt at the same time.

should I make bat file like:
"c:\Program Files\BOINC\boinccmd.exe" --set_gpu_mode never 70
and there will be no more 70% gpu usage by boinc?

No. You cannot limit GPU usage in Boinc. It all depends on application and application like to use 100% of GPU to make work faster. Technically, lags depends on how application is written, how much data GPU crunches per one GPU run. Some applications like PPS-Sieve are using small blocks, some like AP27 bigger ones so lags may become visible.

The line
"c:\Program Files\BOINC\boinccmd.exe" --set_gpu_mode never 70

will disable GPU crunching for 70 seconds. The last optional parameter will set duration of the command. For example, you can make a batch file containing "--set_gpu_mode never 3600" and GPU will not crunch for one hour, then resume.

I just want to use it on my friends and relatives computers. So I dont want make them any harm. And lags. They agree with me to give some of their computer resourses to science.

You should talk to them do they see any lags or not. Some apps may work unnoticed. If they see lags, all you can do is to completely disable GPU calculations while your friends are using computer. In the computing preferences, there is a "Suspend GPU work while computer is in use" checkbox.

Then go into the Boinc Manager, down by the clock, on each pc and under Options, Computing preferences limit the number of cpu cores each one uses to crunch by editing the top box. The selection says "use at most [] % of the CPU's", change that from the default of 100 to 99 and the pc will use one less core than all of them, change it to 75 and it will only use 3/4's of them, set it to 50 and it will use half of the total cpu cores the pc has. If you set it at 74 it will use one less than 3/4 and likewise 49 will use one core less than half of what the pc has in it. For example if you have a quad core cpu then 99 would only let Boinc use 3 of them, 50 would mean 2, and 25 would mean use only 1 cpu core for Boinc's crunching. This would still leave lots of cpu cores for whatever else the pc does and in most cases they won't even notice that Boinc is running.

On most of my pc's I use 99 as I want the pc to last a very long time and for me to replace it BEFORE it dies on its own. On a few pc's I run less than 99 as I also use the gpu and always leave a cpu core just for it too.

Ah finally, the real question.

Not all of the advice you have received is good, in part because you were very vague about what you were trying to do, and in part because some of it just wasn't very good advice.

You have two concerns, lag, and damaging the hardware. Dealing with lag is easier.

Lag:

In the BOINC Manager window, click on "Options", and then "Computing Preferences...". In the dialog box, select the "Computing" tab. You will see a box marked "Suspend GPU computing when computer is in use". Check that box, then click on OK. BOINC will stop using the GPU whenever the user is active ont he computer.

There's a catch, however -- BOINC defines "active" as using the computer or the mouse. If they're using the computer but not typing or moving the mouse, BOINC won't know that they are there and will start running tasks on the GPU. This is particularly a problem if someone is watching video on the computer. A few minutes into the video, the GPU task will start running, and there's a good chance it will cause the video to stutter. It will be noticeable, your friends and relatives won't be happy, and there's no really good way to prevent this without the user (i.e., your friends) manually stopping BOINC.

For CPU tasks, I wouldn't worry. BOINC runs CPU tasks at low priority, and usually a user won't ever notice what BOINC is doing. I always have BOINC running CPU tasks on all cores, and it never affects anything I do (That includes games.) The only thing they're likely to notice is that the computer's fans are spinning faster.

Preventing hardware damage:

This one isn't so easy. Consumer GPUs were designed for gaming, not full out, 24/7 crunching. It's sort of like taking a typical car on a race track and running the car at 150 mph continuously, 24 hours a day, 365 days a years. It wasn't built for that.

When doing this computing, the hardware, especially the GPUs, are drawing more power, and producing more heat, than in normal usage, and they're being asked to do it continuously.

There's a good chance that crunching will shorten the lifespan of the GPU. Additionally, computers used for crunching should be regularly cleaned to remove the dust in order to keep their cooling working properly.

GPU crunching tends to take more of a toll than CPU crunching. You probably won't damage your friends' CPUs, but I can't positively say the same thing about GPUs. I wouldn't use their GPUs if you're concerned about damaging their hardware.

One further note: this all assumes you're using desktop computers. If they have laptops, I don't recommend running BOINC at all. Laptops are not at all designed to deal with the kind of heat that running 24/7 produces, and you need to take special care when crunching on a laptop if you want it to last. For example, special cooling trays exist to force air into laptop vents. If your friends have laptops, don't ask them to crunch for you.

Summary:

* Don't run GPU tasks on your friends computers at all.

* If your friends have laptops, (or "all-in-one" computers which use laptop components), don't run BOINC on them at all.

* If your friends have desktops, you should be able to run CPU tasks without needing to take any special steps to keep BOINC from interfering with their use of the computers.

For running tasks on computers that aren't yours or aren't in your household remember that the increased load also means increased electrical draw. More electricity used means higher electric bills for whoever is crunching. If your friends/family are going to agree to this make sure they know that it will cost them money.

Many an IT administrator in the early days of distributed computing have tried putting clients on all PC's on their networks. Running on one PC is very likely to go unnoticed. But running on 500 PC's is going to make a noticeable difference to network traffic and electrical cost.

My best advice for this is to not enlist your friends and family's computers at all for this. It is simply a bad idea and won't end well.

As for some GPU apps causing screen lag; the best way to deal with that is to manually suspend GPU crunching when you are actively using the computer and then manually resume crunching when you are going to walk away. That's how I deal with it.

+1.

I also strongly recommend that if you are going to run GPU tasks you should have the appropriate telemetry in place, so you can monitor temperatures, adjust fan profiles, adjust voltages, etc., to ensure temperatures stay at an appropriate level. Very generally speaking, the higher the temperature, the shorter the life. Also very generally speaking, the higher the temperature, the greater the power draw.

There are also performance consequences to higher temperatures, particularly on newer GPUs, as they will start to throttle at higher temperatures.

Proper care and feeding of GPUs can help ensure a long, productive, and efficient life for them.
