With the year 2017 around the corner, it's time to start thinking about the challenge schedules for next year. Below is the tentative schedule so far agreed with the Admins.

2017 Challenge Series Start End Time UTC Project Challenge Duration 1 3-Jan 13-Jan 18:00:00 GCW Sieve Isaac Newton's Birthday 10 days * TRP Sieve Run out Drive - March 2 7-Apr 22-Apr 12:00:00 PSP LLR Mathematics Awareness Month 15 days 3 12-Jun 13-Jun 00:00:00 SGS LLR PrimeGrid's Birthday 1 day 4 20-Aug 23-Aug 18:00:00 GCW LLR Solar Eclipse 3 days 5 3-Sep 8-Sep 18:00:00 321 LLR Number Theory Week 5 days 6 18-Oct 23-Oct 00:00:00 TRP LLR Diwali/Deepavali 5 days 7 17-Nov 20-Nov 12:00:00 GFN 15,16,17-Low Pierre de Fermat's Birthday 3 days 8 18-Dec 21-Dec 16:28:00 PPS Sieve Winter Solstice 3 days

The thinking behind the challenge selection:
GCW Sieve - helps start new GCW LLR project sooner
SoB LLR - helps with the double checking, size of the WUs at the time of the challenge will be somewhere in the range 7-30M. To be rescheduled.
PSP LLR - helps with the double checking, longer the better
SGS LLR - have a challenge before it falls off the T5K list
GCW LLR - new project should have started by August
321 LLR - last 321 challenge was in Nov 2014
TRP LLR - last TRP challenge was in Oct 2015

Tour de Primes will be the whole month of February as usual.
It's considered bad luck to celebrate Chinese New Year before the date the actual new year starts, 28th Jan in 2017.
No change is expected with regards to the challenge leaderboard scoring.
I'll keep this post updated as the details are fleshed out.

Finally, we're looking forward to a well behaved discussion about the proposed schedule.

Suggestion: swap the SoB and PSP challenges. By doing so, the SoB will happen in April, which just so happens to be when seventeenorbust.com went down. Perfect 1y homage. That's just a nitpick, though.

I have a problem. There are 60 days involved in this proposal ( 1/6 of the year ), far more than in any recent Challenge Series ( last 5 years: 42, 43, 45, 30, 38 ). It is far too many for me.

I tend to agree that total and individual duration could be a problem for some participants.
Shrink 10 days to 8 and 15 days to 9.

I would keep SoB in February due to months needed to validate work.
In 2015, SoB Challenge (mixed with shorter ESP and PSP) needed 4 months to validate. Starting SoB in April, we would probably validate after the summer.

PSP double check is around 8M6 (864k FFT) and a bit over 10% complete after ~1 month. I guess we will not have DC completed (17M5, 1724k FFT) by the Challenge nor reach 19M leading edge. SoB tasks are 2880K FFT, much longer. PSP Challenge will validate faster than SoB.

Phew the pressure is off for big GFN! I'll have to park it somewhere neat, like 85M.

I'll go with whatever, participate & steer round accordingly. It's taking on its own feel already.

SGS is hot on CPUs & in a warm month in northern hemi climes.

I'm answering this rather than Roger because this was a decision driven by Jim and myself more than it was by the challenge coordinator.

Perhaps it might be helpful to understand why we're scheduling the challenges like this.

There are several large challenges this year, but there's a reason: There's three projects we wish to promote heavily this year: GCW Sieve, PSP, and SoB. All three challenges are long because we want to give them the biggest possible push. Also, even though the tasks won't be as large as they normally are, PSP and SoB will still be very large tasks and need long durations so that people with non-AVX CPUs can participate.

There probably won't be a PSP challenge next year, but you can expect the SoB challenge to repeat for as many years as it takes to finish the SoB double check. (Yes, sadly I expect the SoB double check to take multiple years.) If GCW Sieve does return for a challenge in 2018, it will probably be a short challenge that year. 2017's schedule is certainly an anomaly, and should not be considered to be typical of future schedules.

There's two projects that, by their very nature, grow very slowly in size or don't grow at all, and you'll notice we're also running both of them this year: SGS and the small GFNs. (PPSE is also small, but it's off the table for challenges.)

Look at all the projects we're NOT running this year which would need long challenges:

Woodall (typically 8 or 9 days)
Cullen (typically 8 or 9 days)
GFN20 (15 days the last time it was run by itself)
GFN21
GFN22 (15 days the last time it was run by itself)

As it is, I'm sure we'll have people in 2017 who are going to be unhappy because the challenges are too short for their hardware.

Every year, we decide on the overall rules for the creation of the challenges. These were the rules for this year:

1. There needs to be a GCW challenge, it has to be early in the year, and it needs to be long. (So we can get GCW-LLR started.)

2. We want to run a long PSP challenge, and it needs to be in the first half of the year. (This is to aid in the double check. It needs to be early in the year so the cleanup doesn't run into 2018.)

3. SoB; same as PSP.

4. PPSE is not available for challenges. (PPSE is what's pushing SGS off the T5K list, and we do not want to exacerbate that process.)

5. Really short tasks such as SGS can't have long challenges. (We don't want to add many millions of tasks to the database.)

6. You can't have small tasks in challenges that will have long cleanups, therefore you can't mix really small tasks (e.g., SGS) with really long tasks (e.g., GFN-22 or SoB). Millions upon millions of small tasks would be created during the many months that the long tasks would need for the cleanup.

7. As much as possible, try to avoid producing a lot of heat in the summer (in both hemispheres.)

8. Show some love to projects that haven't had challenges ever, or haven't in a few years. (The small GFNs have never been part of a BOINC challenge, for example.)

9. If we do a GCW-LLR challenge, it needs to be late in the year because it's uncertain when it will start.

10. Don't do a TRP-Sieve challenge in case TRP-Sieve is completed before the challenge runs.

The challenges are supposed to be fun. If a particular challenge isn't right for you, please crunch something else. Everyone has different likes and dislikes, different abilities, and different priorities. We'd be foolish to think we could please everyone all of the time. We'll be satisfied if everyone has at least a few challenges that appeal to them.

Mike, as always you have good point.
Only I cannot understand what , and why you still pushing SGS.
We found everything that we can found with this exponent.
And people with slow hardware can got to PPSE, and find primes little larger then SGS. So no one will loose anything if you shutdown SGS.

Mike, as always you have good point.
Only I cannot understand what , and why you still pushing SGS.
We found everything that we can found with this exponent.
And people with slow hardware can got to PPSE, and find primes little larger then SGS. So no one will loose anything if you shutdown SGS.

With regards to the challenges, we're not pushing it. It's in there just for fun. People like running small tasks. :)

As far as the project itself is concerned, for now we would like to keep running and find additional twins or SGS pairs.

Found the following Mathematician's Birthday Calendar:
http://mathforum.org/~judyann/calendar/
Isaac Newton was born 25 December 1642 according to the Julian calendar that is old-style. If converted to the Georgian calendar, we have to add ten days, and so his date of birth was 4 January 1643 new-style.

August 21 - Total Solar Eclipse. A total solar eclipse occurs when the moon completely blocks the Sun, revealing the Sun's beautiful outer atmosphere known as the corona. This is a rare, once-in-a-lifetime event for viewers in the United States. The last total solar eclipse visible in the continental United States occurred in 1979 and the next one will not take place until 2024. The path of totality will begin in the Pacific Ocean and travel through the center of the United States. The total eclipse will be visible in parts of Oregon, Idaho, Wyoming, Nebraska, Missouri, Kentucky, Tennessee, North Carolina, and South Carolina before ending in the Atlantic Ocean. A partial eclipse will be visible in most of North America and parts of northern South America. (NASA Map and Eclipse Information | Detailed Zoomable Map of Eclipse Path)

The conference Number Theory Week 2017 is organised on the occasion of the 60th birthday of Jerzy Kaczorowski. Reflecting his broad interests, the conference will be devoted to all areas of Number Theory, with special emphasis on Analytic Number Theory. The aim of the conference will be to bring together researchers in these various fields, to learn about the latest developments, facilitate interaction between different areas, promote collaborations, and to suggest future directions. It will enable participants to present recent results in this discipline and it should stimulate future collaboration between them.
The conference will be organised jointly by the Institute of Mathematics of the Polish Academy of Sciences, the Polish Mathematical Society, and the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science of Adam Mickiewicz University. It will be held September 4-8, 2017 at the Faculty of Mathematics and Computer Science of Adam Mickiewicz University, PoznaƄ, Poland. The suggested arrival date is Sunday September 3, 2017 and the departure day Saturday September 9, 2017.

In mathematics, analytic number theory is a branch of number theory that uses methods from mathematical analysis to solve problems about the integers. It is often said to have begun with Peter Gustav Lejeune Dirichlet's 1837 introduction of Dirichlet L-functions to give the first proof of Dirichlet's theorem on arithmetic progressions. It is well known for its results on prime numbers (involving the Prime Number Theorem and Riemann zeta function) and additive number theory (such as the Goldbach conjecture and Waring's problem).

Just a couple of thoughts. The cleanup work for 2017 will be long and long. I don't see AP27 in there and was wondering the thinking on leaving it out.

Cheers

There's 9 challenges and over 20 projects. We can't run every project every year, and AP27 ran in 2016. We're also not running SR5, Cullen, or Woodall, or the big GFNs, or TRP sieve (assuming it's still active.) We're not excluding any of those because we don't want to run them. We just can't run everything every year.

8 17-Nov 20-Nov 12:00:00 GFN 15,16,17-Low Pierre de Fermat's Birthday 3 days

High End GPUs cannot contribute to this challenge because they are inefficient in that ranges.

To my point of view, a GFN challenge should be a GPU challenge and n=18, 19 and 20 is a sensible short challenge.

A record can be found during the challenge and all primes are megaprimes (I found some GFN 15, 16, 17 primes in 2000/2004 with few Pentium III and Pentium 4 CPUs: GFN 15,16,17-Low is not a 2017 challenge).

According to http://www.primegrid.com/server_status_tasks.php average computation times are 1, 3 and 10 hours then a 3 days challenge is not a problem (the fastest GPUs are able to test 20 GFN 20 in a 3 day period!).

Pierre de Fermat and Blaise Pascal were contemporaries: let Pascal(s) contribute to Fermat's challenge.

While it's true that they aren't as efficient, they are still the most powerful things around and can still do a lot of crunching. True, they won't do as good, but that can actually be a good thing if you have heat problems like I do: instead of, say, crunching n22, you could crunch n=15 and cut your power draw by 80w in our beloved 35C summer days.

Imo, a stronger argument would be "Tour de Primes already 'forces' people to run GFN15 in hopes to get a prime, so a gfn15 challenge would be redundant".

TDP is a challenge to find T5K primes, so GFN 15 is not eligible.

Imo, a stronger argument would be "Tour de Primes already 'forces' people to run GFN15 in hopes to get a prime, so a gfn15 challenge would be redundant".

TDP is a challenge to find T5K primes, so GFN 15 is not eligible.

Doesn't N15 count for total number of primes?

At any rate, change sentence to N=16 and the argument still stands.

I just have two minor comments:

If GFN-15 does not count for total number of primes, then why not run GFN-17 high and/or GFN-18 instead?

If the new GCW-LLR project for whatever the reason is not ready, have a contingency sub-project proposed and ready to go now and not making this determination during 2017.

For TDP, GFN-15 doesn't count. There's no reason why it can't be part of a normal challenge. The reasoning behind this particular challenge was to run GFN ranges that had never been in a challenge before.

If the new GCW-LLR project for whatever the reason is not ready, have a contingency sub-project proposed and ready to go now and not making this determination during 2017.

That's why it's scheduled for August. It gives us lots of time to get GCW-LLR running, and if for some reason it's not, then there's lots of time to reschedule the challenge. Honestly, the only reason it wouldn't be running is that we've done insufficient GCW sieving, so I suppose if that happens we could just change the challenge to a second GCW Sieve challenge. But that's only speculation. It's pointless to decide upon contingencies this far in advance. If we need to, decisions will be made based upon actual facts at the proper time.

Also, even though the tasks won't be as large as they normally are, PSP and SoB will still be very large tasks...

There probably won't be a PSP challenge next year, but you can expect the SoB challenge to repeat for as many years as it takes to finish the SoB double check. (Yes, sadly I expect the SoB double check to take multiple years.)

Did I miss an official announcement that a SoB double check is a sure thing? Do we have details on when it'll start, whether we'll be doing all remaining k, or just the SoB lost forevers?

I'm excited, SoB is the project that got me into Distributed Computing, but I get impatient waiting for runs to finish. (And I do occasionally like to turn my computer off.)

No, you didn't miss anything. We're still working out the details.

We do want it to start as soon as possible. We'll be double checking the five remaining k values only. There's still a lot of work to be done to figure out exactly what needs to be tested.

Bring on the SoB challenge! And also a PSP one, if I had my way. Which I haven't got.

Can we extend the TRP LLR challenge at all? Small enough units for everyone. I like the conjectures, and it would be a major feather in PG's cap to actually prove (or disprove) one.

That's my 5 pence. Don't drop it, they're small.

Well actually we can only prove the conjecture (by finding primes for all the remaining k values). If the conjecture is false, one of those k has no primes and the search will go on forever...

TDP is a challenge to find T5K primes, so GFN 15 is not eligible.

It is possible to find GFN-15s in T5K surely?

Wouldn't it "just" be a case of starting a new series from a suitably large b value, as you already do for the GFN-17 to bump it into the MEGA zone ?

Would it be worth thinking about introducing GFN-15-T5K in time for TdP month?

Or would that need a longer lead time to get sieving done in the relevant range? (and agreed, there is already plenty of sieving to do next year anyway)

To paraphrase Darth Vader..

"I find your lack of math disturbing."

Or maybe William Shakespeare...

"To b or not to b, that is the question."

Go figure out how high b would need to be. :)

Hint: The formula for the length, in digits, of a GFN number of the form b^n+1 is log10(b)*n, rounded up.

yes, b would be rather big ;)

But impossibly so? Roughly twice as many digits as the b used for GFN-16? You square b to balance the halving of the exponent, and squaring doubles (roughly) the number of digits.

Last time I looked the 5,000th prime was not yet 390,000 digits. So doesn't that mean GFN-15 with an 12digit value for b would get well into the list: 12 * 32768 > 393000?

So I was thinking an 12 digit b was not unreachably enormous, especially when you are using an 8 digit b for the GFN-17 Mega. Its ~10000x larger but the time taken depends on the overall number, the 390,000 digits not the digits in the base, surely???

I am not spotting my fallacy here. Have I made some stupid calculation error? If so, I've stared at this and not seen it.

You can read http://primegrid.com/forum_thread.php?id=4152 about the b limits for the applications. We can only test up to b=400,000,000 using the current applications.

That b is almost 2000 times larger than we can test on a GPU, and about 7000 times larger than we can test with Genefer on a CPU.

Fair enough, the required b would be well above that. Or to put it another way, with b=400M GFN would be well below the smallest current T5K number.

I am at GMT +8 (Perth, Australia), so 18:00 UTC is a very inconvenient 2am for me. I think a spread of start times is fair.

The challenge schedule is tentative. Comments in this thread will be taken into account in due time. The more people requesting the same thing, the more likely it is to be implemented.

I'll review the length of the SoB LLR and PSP LLR challenges closer to the time, depending on the size of the WU's. 15 days would be the absolute maximum length of those challenges. GCW LLR may not be ready by August, may need to substitute with AP27 or TRP Sieve instead.

Imagine my surprise to learn that 18:00 UTC is considered perfect by and for those of us who (a) are located in the Americas, and (b) work typical full-time day shift hours, and (c) do not have access to our BOINCing machines from our places of employment. I did not realize that we are so few that the remainder constitute "just about everybody".

Happy new year to all. A few comments before it starts all over again:

First of all, I think it's once again a good mixture of almost everything PG has to offer, with LLR tasks of various sizes, a CPU sieve, a GPU sieve and a selection of the Genefer tasks. The challenge durations are reasonable from my point of view, as I think it's most interesting if not only the fastest state-of-the-art machines can complete a task but also not every old P4 can finish hundreds of tasks. The GCW Sieve challenge is an exception, of course, but I understand that there is a good reason for making it that long this time.

I am at GMT +8 (Perth, Australia), so 18:00 UTC is a very inconvenient 2am for me. I think a spread of start times is fair.

I agree. There is no perfect time for everyone and no one should take an advantage from that every time. 0:00 UTC (which is 1am for me) also reminds me of the old times when every challenge started at that time and a rolling start was not a good option because the work supply was too unstable back then. :)

I'll review the length of the SoB LLR and PSP LLR challenges closer to the time, depending on the size of the WU's. 15 days would be the absolute maximum length of those challenges. GCW LLR may not be ready by August, may need to substitute with AP27 or TRP Sieve instead.

That's good to know. Once the SoB doublecheck starts, the task lengths will go only one direction and the doublecheck might well need more pushes in years to come, so while it might be tempting to kick off the doublecheck with a long challenge, I'd recommend to save the 15 day challenge for 2018 or 2019 and choose a shorter duration this year, so that we don't end up with the same 15 day SoB doublecheck challenge every year.

Three more questions:

- end date of the Solar Eclipse Challenge is August 22 according to the schedule in this thread, but August 23 according to http://www.primegrid.com/challenge/challenge.php. Since it is supposed to be a 3 day challenge, August 23 is correct, isn't it? (another idea might be centering this challenge around the maximum of the solar eclipse on August 21, 18:26 UTC, i.e. start on August 20, 6:26 UTC, end on August 23, 6:26 UTC)

- Winter Solstice Challenge will end at the time of the solstice according to the first post (as it was the case every year), but start at the time of the solstice according to http://www.primegrid.com/challenge/challenge.php. Which schedule is correct?

- The scoring tables on http://www.primegrid.com/challenge/challenge.php only have 1, 3, 5, 8, and 9 day challenges, how many points will be awarded for the 10 day and the potential 15 day challenges?

Finally, thanks for not scheduling a challenge in May, avoiding a collision with the BOINC Pentathlon. There's (again) a collision with another big event at another project for me and my team in November, but I can't come up with a suggestion for a challenge theme a week later (Fermat's exact date of birth is unknown, but 17th is very fitting, of course). However, this is certainly not a show-stopper, as it's impossible to avoid collisions with every single-project challenge someone might be interested to participate in and most participants of these single-project challenges are running only that project anyways (while PrimeGrid is a bit special because the Challenge Series is organized by the project itself, which no other Project does, also here most challenge participants run PG anyway and just switch the subproject and/or add more computers).

I have updated the schedule in the first post to have the Challenge end on the 23rd. Is meant to be a 3 day challenge. Eclipse start and end times are more important than the maximum eclipse in terms of Challenge start and end times.

- Winter Solstice Challenge will end at the time of the solstice according to the first post (as it was the case every year), but start at the time of the solstice according to http://www.primegrid.com/challenge/challenge.php. Which schedule is correct?

I don't like the idea of a challenge finishing on Christmas Eve, so I would encourage the schedule in the first post, as has been the case previously.
[edit] The web page has been updated to match.[/edit]

- The scoring tables on http://www.primegrid.com/challenge/challenge.php only have 1, 3, 5, 8, and 9 day challenges, how many points will be awarded for the 10 day and the potential 15 day challenges?

I am not keen on 15 day challenges hogging all the points vs smaller challenges. Smaller WU's will lead to smaller challenges. This is on my to do list, but the goal posts are uncertain at this time.
[edit] Table has been updated. Points will stay the same for the SoB and PSP LLR challenges, even if the durations shorten in the future.[/edit]

Finally, thanks for not scheduling a challenge in May, avoiding a collision with the BOINC Pentathlon. Start has been chosen as the middle of the period research has narrowed Fermat's birth down to:
http://www.maa.org/press/periodicals/convergence/when-was-pierre-de-fermat-born
"Additional research led Barner to conclude that Fermat was born between October 31 and December 6, 1607."

Fermat's mother, of course, had truly wonderful evidence of the exact date, but the margins of her diary were too narrow to record it

By the way, Richard K. Guy, the well-known mathematician, will turn 101 (a base 10 GFN, that is 10^2+1) on 30 September 2017. He recently lost a bet to John H. Conway because in the period from Guy's 80th to his 100th birthday, no more Fermat numbers were completely factored. See for example Fermatsearch.org News near Guy's 2016 birthday date.

The years of complete factoring of (composite) Fermat numbers:

1732: F5 1855: F6 1970: F7 1980: F8 1988: F11 1990: F9 1995: F10 1996: (Guy 80 years old) 2016: (Guy 100 years old, no more full factorizations)

Unless we get a fix for the LLR 3.8.18 issue in the next week(ish) we're going to swap the SoB Challenge for another.
We're not going to run an SoB Challenge at the leading edge while there's such a large DC left to do.
Challenge name will stay the same. As I see it the options are:
- Run a high n GFN challenge, i.e. GFN 20, we've never found a prime at this n.
- Swap the SoB and PSP challenge, i.e. kick the can down the road.
- Run a Woodall Challenge, the last Woodall prime was at 3.7M, we're now up to 15M, so emotionally due for a prime.
Choice will be by Admin consensus, feel free to comment though.

My vote goes to swapping SoB and PSP first.
Then if SoB is still not ready to go by April we can look at replacing it with something else or delaying it further.

Fine this end whichever. Worth trying the PSP first as gives that a push sooner while still giving chance of an LLR fix. Also still cool enough in theory in northern hemi for a GFN challenge.

Unless we get a fix for the LLR 3.8.18 issue in the next week(ish) we're going to swap the SoB Challenge for another.
...
- Run a Woodall Challenge, the last Woodall prime was at 3.7M, we're now up to 15M, so emotionally due for a prime.

Is Woodall not also LLR? Does the LLR 3.8.18 issue not impact Woodall workunits?

We're not going to run an SoB Challenge at the leading edge while there's such a large DC left to do.

Also, we're running SoB leading edge workunits now even though there is not a challenge currently underway. Why is everything ok when there isn't a challenge going on? Can double check units start being issued now?

Challenge name will stay the same. As I see it the options are:
- Run a high n GFN challenge, i.e. GFN 20, we've never found a prime at this n.
- Swap the SoB and PSP challenge, i.e. kick the can down the road.
- Run a Woodall Challenge, the last Woodall prime was at 3.7M, we're now up to 15M, so emotionally due for a prime.
Choice will be by Admin consensus, feel free to comment though.

Second post in this very thread should sum up my opinion:
Suggestion: swap the SoB and PSP challenges. By doing so, the SoB will happen in April, which just so happens to be when seventeenorbust.com went down. Perfect 1y homage. That's just a nitpick, though.

The existing 3.8.17 version of LLR is fine., so all other LLR projects (and the current leading edge SoB tasks that you asked about in your second question) aren't affected.

For the SoB double check, however, we need to use a feature of LLR that we don't use on other projects in order to be compatible with the residues from the original SoB project.

With the existing 3.8.17 version of LLR, that "compatibility" feature runs 50% slower than a normal LLR test. The new 3.8.18 version of LLR corrects that and runs in compatibility mode at the same speed as the normal test. Unfortunately, 3.8.18 also adds another feature, and it's this other feature which is broken. Even though this bug shouldn't affect LLR 3.8.18 as we intend on using it, we're being cautious and have decided not to use 3.8.18 at all until the bug is fixed. We also don't want to start the double check running software that is 50% slower than it should be.

We are therefore planning on waiting for a corrected version of LLR before starting the SoB double check, but all of our current LLR projects are okay running with the current version of LLR.

Are you planning to see the American Eclipse on August 21? A few hours after sunrise, a rare total eclipse of the Sun will be visible along a narrow path across the USA. Those only near the path will see a partial eclipse. Although some Americans live right in path of totality, surely many more will be able to get there after a well-planned drive. One problem with eclipses, though, is that clouds sometimes get in the way. To increase your clear-viewing odds, you might consult the featured map and find a convenient destination with a historically low chance (more blue) of thick clouds overhead during totality. Given the large fraction of Americans carrying camera-equipped smartphones, this American Eclipse may turn out to be the most photographed event in the history of the world.

The path is only a few hours south of me in Oregon, so I'm hoping to load up a friend, dogs and camera equipment to be there. Unfortunately I work in a job where our positions are "essential" (i.e., there must be a substitute worker available) and August is a popular month for vacations so I didn't get the option when my bid came around. We'll see what I can conjure up as July approaches. It's possible that this will be the only total eclipse in my lifetime that I will have the chance to see.

Total solar eclipses are a tremendous excuse to travel abroad. I was privy to one locally in the southeastern Aegean and which required a 12-hr ferry boat ride (this was back in 2007). A year later I went to Novosibirsk (Siberia, Russia) whereas the eclipse of the century in 2009 lasting over 7 minutes of totality was a huge disappointment (I flew to Shanghai and then by train to Hangzhou for the eclipse but all of China was clouded out).

It seems quite unlikely I will be able to travel stateside for this year's total eclipse due to family commitments at home. However, we average about one total solar eclipse every 18 months or so and there will be many eclipse opportunities in the future.

Here are some samples from the 2008 total solar eclipse from Novosibirsk and where I had pristine transparency:

While "the very large amount of computing power" is being applied to TRP Sv, we won't be able to support a BOINC Challenge. This is because we won't be able suspend purging of TRP-sieve WU's from the database for scoring. If we did we'd run out of disk space very quickly. So basically, no challenges during the TRP-sieve rundown. Of course this can change very quickly, so keep an eye out. More info:

Isn't the purging disabled only for the challenge project? I understand, however, that you first need to see how the server keeps up with the additional load.

It might be a good idea to remove the countdown from the main page until there is a new date for the next challenge. Not everyone is reading the message boards and it's confusing if there is a countdown to a challenge that's likely not going to happen. ;)

I just finished to speaking to Roger about the upcoming challenges. He'll update you once he gets some more sleep (where he lives, he should be sound asleep right now and not discussing challenges!)

In the meantime, I've removed the clock from the front page, and also removed the March and April challenges from the schedule pending further review. I suspect we'll still run those challenges, but the dates may change.

We're definitely not going to start the SoB challenge next Friday. We will endeavor to give you as much notice as possible before the next challenge. We realize everyone needs time to prepare for challenges.

The GCW LLR sub-project needs to start of course. Admin attentions are on other things at the moment though. I can't see why the GCW LLR challenge can't go ahead in August as planned.

PSP Challenge in April has been reinstated. The TRP Sieve Run out Drive has stabilised on the servers and we can now handle a large WU style Challenge while this is going on.

Suggestion: swap the SoB and PSP challenges. By doing so, the SoB will happen in April, which just so happens to be when seventeenorbust.com went down. Perfect 1y homage. That's just a nitpick, though.

Is it too late to re-instate this request?

I believe it would be rather appropriate, if it is practicable (and reasonably comfortable) to get the SoB double check process tested beforehand. I realise it may well not be, and that the admin tem have had a lot on recently and deserve a bit of a rest.

Suggestion: swap the SoB and PSP challenges. By doing so, the SoB will happen in April, which just so happens to be when seventeenorbust.com went down. Perfect 1y homage. That's just a nitpick, though.

Is it too late to re-instate this request?

No, but it is too early. April is too soon to run an SoB challenge.

I'm going to take a wild guess and say that an SoB challenge won't really be considered until such time as any remaining leading edge units are completed.
After the incredible success of the PSP challenge it would be great to see an SoB double check challenge sooner rather than later. But I can understand not wanting to get stuck with a leading edge unit in a challenge where the unit may take far longer than the total challenge time.

That's a bit too far out on the limb. It will take a long time for the leading edge tasks to all be completed. Think about how long the oldest SoB task is -- that's about how long it will take until they're all done.

The original plan was to have an SoB challenge in March -- which would have been about half a year before the leading edge tasks all completed. We have also been considering rescheduling the SoB challenge in May, although I'd say the odds of that happening are probably less than 50/50.

While I suspect we won't be running an SoB challenge soon, the leading edge tasks aren't really a consideration, and never were.
