Welcome to the Winter Solstice Challenge

The Final Challenge of the 2016 Challenge series is upon us. The Winter Solstice Challenge will be a 3 day (72 hour) celebration on account of the winters solstice. The challenge is being offered on PrimeGrid's most successful sieve, the Proth Prime Search (Sieve) application. Come join us and warm yourself by the Solstice fires!

The Winter Solstice...a predictable event in nature that has occurred for billions of years. A way point in the cyclic motion of the Universe. Many of the today's major winter festivals and celebrations can trace their origins back to this event...the longest night of the year (or the shortest day).

We'd like to wish everyone a Happy Holiday...whatever festival or celebration you may observe.

NOTE: The servers are located in the Northern Hemisphere; therefore, we'll observe winter. However, the Southern Hemisphere will be experiencing the Summer Solstice.

To participate in the Challenge, please select only the PPS (Sieve) project in your PrimeGrid preferences section. The challenge will begin 18 December 2016 10:44 UTC and end 21 December 2016 10:44 UTC. Application builds are available for the following:

  • Microsoft Windows (98 or later) running on an Intel x86-compatible CPU 1.41 (openclatiPPSsieve)
  • Microsoft Windows (98 or later) running on an Intel x86-compatible CPU 1.39 (cudaPPSsieve)
  • Microsoft Windows (98 or later) running on an Intel x86-compatible CPU 1.39 (cpuPPSsieve)
  • Microsoft Windows running on an AMD x86_64 or Intel EM64T CPU 1.39 (cpuPPSsieve)

Time zone converter:

The World Clock - Time Zone Converter

NOTE: The countdown clock on the front page uses the host computer time. Therefore, if your computer time is off, so will the countdown clock. For precise timing, use the UTC Time in the data section to the left of the countdown clock.

Scoring Information

Scores will be kept for individuals and teams. Only work units issued AFTER 18 December 2016 10:44 UTC and received BEFORE 21 December 2016 10:44 UTC will be considered for credit. Since this is a fixed credit project, we'll be using cobblestones for scoring. Unlike what some of you might still be used to, there will be a clean up.

Credit is currently set at 3371 cobblestones per WU.

At the Conclusion of the Challenge
We would prefer users "moving on" to finish those tasks they have downloaded, if not then please ABORT the WU's instead of DETACHING, RESETTING, or PAUSING.

ABORTING WU's allows them to be recycled immediately; thus a much faster "clean up" to the end of an LLR Challenge. DETACHING, RESETTING, and PAUSING WU's causes them to remain in limbo until they EXPIRE. Therefore, we must wait until WU's expire to send them out to be completed.

Please consider either completing what's in the queue or ABORTING them. Thank you. :)

About the Proth Prime Search

The Proth Prime Search is done in collaboration with the Proth Search project. This search looks for primes in the form of k*2^n+1. With the condition 2^n > k, these are often called Proth primes. This project also has the added bonus of possibly finding factors of "classical" Fermat numbers or Generalized Fermat numbers. As this requires PrimeFormGW (PFGW) (a primality-testing program), once PrimeGrid finds a prime, it is then tested on PrimeGrid's servers for divisibility.

Our initial goal was to double check all previous work up to n=500K for odd k<1200 and to fill in any gaps that were missed. We accomplished that, increased the goal to n=800k, then expanded to include sub-project Proth Prime Search Extended (PPSE) for odd 1,200<k<10,000 and the Proth Mega Prime Search of numbers larger than 1m decimal digits for odd k<1200. Small primes are still important as they may lead to new factors for "classical" Fermat numbers or Generalized Fermat numbers. While there are many GFN factors, currently there are only about 334 "classical" Fermat number factors known. Current primes found in PPS definitely make it into the Top 5000 Primes database.

We're currently searching n>2.4m for odd 300<k<600 in PPS, n>1.4m for odd 1200<k<10,000 in PPSE and n>3.3m for odd 500<k<1200 in the Proth Mega Prime Search.

For more information about "Proth" primes, please visit these links:

About Proth Search

The Proth Search project was established in 1998 by Ray Ballinger and Wilfrid Keller to coordinate a distributed effort to find Proth primes (primes of the form k*2^n+1) for k < 300. Ray was interested in finding primes while Wilfrid was interested in finding divisors of Fermat number. Since that time it has expanded to include k < 1200. Mark Rodenkirch (aka rogue) has been helping Ray keep the website up to date for the past few years.

Early in 2008, PrimeGrid and Proth Search teamed up to provide a software managed distributed effort to the search. Although it might appear that PrimeGrid is duplicating some of the Proth Search effort by re-doing some ranges, few ranges on Proth Search were ever double-checked. This has resulted in PrimeGrid finding primes that were missed by previous searchers. By the end of 2008, all new primes found by PrimeGrid were eligible for inclusion in Chris Caldwell's Prime Pages Top 5000. Sometime in 2009, over 90% of the tests handed out by PrimeGrid were numbers that have never been tested.
Since then a great deal of proth primes have been founds, including over 55 mega primes!

PrimeGrid intends to continue the search indefinitely for Proth primes.

What is sieving?

Sieving is the first step to prime finding. In general, a sieve separates wanted/desired elements from unwanted material using a tool such as a mesh, net or other filtration or distillation methods. The word "sift" derives from this term. (Wikipedia - Sieve)

In PrimeGrid's case, the desired elements ultimately are prime numbers and the unwanted material are composite numbers. Our tool of choice for PPS sieve is Geoff Reynolds'/Ken Brazier's tpsieve program. It eliminates possible candidates by removing numbers that have small factors. As this process is much faster than primality testing, it is good to thoroughly sieve a data set before primality testing.

Sieving removes many candidates at the beginning. However, the deeper the sieve goes, the slower the rate of removal, till eventually sieving removes candidates at the same rate as primality testing. This is sometimes referred to as "optimal depth". Primality testing is recommended at this point.

There are many factors that determine how much time and how deep to sieve. After sieving, all the remaining candidates must be primality tested to determine their "prime" status.

For those of you curious about some GPU performance comparisons, here are some numbers that I have compiled over the last couple of days across a number of NVidia cards from different families and the one AMD card that I have (numbers are rounded to nearest 25 seconds and given in ranges when cards have differed by more than 25 seconds due to clock differences, etc.):

Pascal
GTX 1060 6GB - 600 seconds

Maxwell
GTX 960 - 875 seconds to 1,000 seconds
GTX 950 - 1,675 seconds
GTX 745 - 3,425 seconds

Kepler
GTX 660 Ti - 675 seconds to 775 seconds
GTX 660 OEM - 825 seconds to 850 seconds
GTX 645 - 1,825 seconds to 2,200 seconds
GT 640 - 2,675 seconds

Fermi
GT 440 OEM - 5,425 seconds
GT 440 - 5,996 seconds
GT 540M - 7,200 seconds

AMD
RX 470 - 900 seconds

As you can see, the newest Pascal cards are very fast. What is perhaps surprising is how well the old Kepler cards do in comparison to the Maxwell cards. Those of you with GTX 780 and 780Ti cards will be able to put up numbers comparable to some of the Pascal cards! Still, even a low end old Fermi card like the GT 440 can manage about 50,000 credits per day on the PPS sieve.

Good luck to everyone! Should be a fun challenge.

**note: The OEM cards listed run a bit faster than their consumer equivalents because they typically have a few more shader cores (e.g., the GT 440 OEM = 144 shaders vs. GT 440 = 96 shaders)**

The GTX 1050ti is almost disappointing here.
~1050 seconds per unit.
Half as fast as the GTX 1060 (but also half the cost) and even slower than my old GTX 760 was. The GTX 760 was around 750 seconds if memory serves. But that card would super-heat my apartment and was hell on the electrical bill.

I will post back about how my R5 230 does when it manages to complete a unit.

Running what Driver?

376.19 on the GTX 1050ti
I started out with the 375.95 and 376.09 drivers, but they were insanely buggy. Suspending a workunit would either cause a driver crash or a BSOD. Even turning on my second screen would sometimes cause a driver crash or BSOD with either the 375.95 or 376.09 drivers. The 376.19 is completely stable with no issues at all.

Catalyst 15.7.1 for the R5 230
This is the last stable driver AMD seems to want to release for this card. There's a beta Crimson driver from March 1, 2016, but that's it.

6.5 hours per unit on the R5 230.
Suddenly the GTX 1050 ti doesn't feel all that disappointing. haha

I have to ask first, why are you even using app_info? You should be able to run this as-is without the aggravation and risk of using app_info. The answer to that question might affect the answer to your question.

Right now, as far as I know, there's currently only a very limited subset of computers that should have any use for app_info at PrimeGrid, and that involves having the correct combination of Apple Macintosh, OSX Sierra, AMD GPUs, and some of our GPU projects. As far as I can tell all of your computers are running Windows, so everything here should run right out of the box.

I have app_info running 4 at once on my three Titans also together 12 wu's at once. It would be nice to have an entry to add all my cpu's too. Till now they do nothing.
In Top Computers I'm at place 3 now (without any CPU working wu's).

Got me QTY 2x Gigabyte R9 280X WindForce 3X OC. Borrowed from my brother who upgraded to a Nvidia 1080. Bless him.
Installed the first one. Been a while since I've been able to crunch GPU WU's, since I accidently broke my old card leaving the DVI plug half in.
This Challenge is going to be extra special to me.

With one WU running, GPU is at 87% load, 69 deg C @ 65% Fan Speed.
First PPS Sieve WU done in 12:04
Back in August 2014 my old HD7970X2 was doing these WU's in 17:30, so having two 280X's is going to be a 3x improvement.
Let's crunch!

Just finished cooking a Turkey roll on the BBQ. Yum yum

I thought that might be the case, which is why I asked.

I think you should be using app_config.xml for that. It's much simpler than app_info.xml (the anonymous platform mechanism), and is specifically designed to allow you to control the number of tasks that run for each app. Best of all, you can set it up for certain apps while letting the other apps run normally. For a project like PrimeGrid, with 20+ apps, that means you can set up PPS-Sieve to run multiple copies on your GPUs while every other app will run normally without setting up a 300 line app_config.xml file detailing every single app.

For example, let's say you wanted 4 PPS-Sieve tasks to run on your 3 GPUs simultaneously (4 tasks total across 3 GPUS, or 0.75% of a GPU per task), as well as one task each on 8 CPU cores. You could put this into app_config.xml:

<app_config> <app> <name>pps_sr2sieve</name> <fraction_done_exact/> </app> <app_version> <app_name>pps_sr2sieve</app_name> <plan_class>cudaPPSsieve</plan_class> <avg_ncpus>.01</avg_ncpus> <ngpus>.75</ngpus> </app_version> <app_version> <app_name>pps_sr2sieve</app_name> <plan_class>cpuPPSsieve</plan_class> <avg_ncpus>1</avg_ncpus> </app_version> </app_config>

That's it. You don't need to specify the executables. You don't need to manually download anything. You don't have to manually update everything when we upgrade the software. Every other app will work normally. This is MUCH easier to use.

Give that a try and see if it does what you want. Remember, all your other PrimeGrid apps will continue to work normally when you set up app_config for PPS-Sieve. It's not necessary to set up app_config for every task -- just those tasks where you want to run more (or less) than 1 task per device or core.

Documentation is at the BOTTOM of this page: https://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/Client_configuration

Update: I just set up for myself a slightly modified version of the app_config.xml file I posted. My purpose was similar to yours: I want to run 2 tasks simultaneously on my shiny new GTX 1060. Worked perfectly. Didn't even have to restart BOINC or wait for tasks to finish. Just created the app_config.xml file and hit "read config files" in the BOINC manager.

P.S. The GTX 1060 is amazing. Double the speed of the GTX 580 it replaced. According to the UPS, it's using 125 watts LESS power. With my electric rates the GPU will literally pay for itself within a year. It's also running a lot cooler and a lot quieter.

P.S. The GTX 1060 is amazing. Double the speed of the GTX 580 it replaced. According to the UPS, it's using 125 watts LESS power. With my electric rates the GPU will literally pay for itself within a year. It's also running a lot cooler and a lot quieter.

Seeing is believing with the GTX 1060. Mine runs at 1938 MHz/3802 MHz right out of the box with my only intervention being the fan (set @ 60%). It is running at about 96% TDP. I also noticed how quiet and cool it is. At $200, it is a great buy.

Allowed units to go through the day so I've got some timings too:

Pascal
352s 1070
637s 1060 3GB

Maxwell
378s 980Ti
586s 970
1928s 750Ti

AMD
626s R9 280X

I'm a little surprised at the 280X, as I thought there was a bigger gap between red and green. Ok, it's comparable to the 1060 3GB which is rated around half the power, but still... not bad.

Just realised I also have a 260X spare so I could/should put it in a box and try it...

EVGA Titan SC GK110 @1250MHz four at once: 1,174.71 sec /4 = 293,6 sec

EVGA GTX 980 Ti Classified - 391 seconds
EVGA GTX 980 Classified - 484 seconds
EVGA GTX 970 FTW+ - 584 seconds
EVGA GTX 670 FTW - 652 seconds

These are running at their factory overclocked speeds. The time for each is the mean, rounded to the nearest integer, calculated from ten (10) validated tasks completed and submitted earlier today.

Pascal
352s 1070
637s 1060 3GB

Maxwell

AMD
626s R9 280X
1748s for R7 260X. Not bad... slightly faster than 750Ti.

Pascal
GTX 1060 6GB - 600 seconds

Maxwell
GTX 960 - 875 seconds to 1,000 seconds
GTX 950 - 1,675 seconds
GTX 745 - 3,425 seconds

Kepler
GTX 660 Ti - 675 seconds to 775 seconds
GTX 660 OEM - 825 seconds to 850 seconds
GTX 645 - 1,825 seconds to 2,200 seconds
GT 640 - 2,675 seconds

Fermi
GT 440 OEM - 5,425 seconds
GT 440 - 5,996 seconds
GT 540M - 7,200 seconds

AMD
RX 470 - 900 seconds

GTX 1060 3Gb - 555 seconds (1 unit at a time) / 1022 seconds (2 units at a time)
GTX 1080 8Gb - 462 seconds (2 units at a time)

Nvidia GTX 750Ti 1728 sec

The GTX 1050ti is almost disappointing here.
~1050 seconds per unit.
For the record the GTX 760 is doing a unit in ~1020 seconds. So it's beating my GTX 1050 ti by about 30 seconds per unit.
6.5 hours per unit on the R5 230.

--- EVGA GTX 1070 FTW @ 2051Mhz = 320 to 341 seconds / (140W) / 897k PPD
--- Zotac GTX 970 Extreme @ 1541MHz = 475 to 490 seconds / (170W) / 612k PPD
--- EVGA GTX 970 ACX2.0+ reference @ 1501MHz = 505 to 520 seconds / (170W) / 577k PPD
--- Gigabyte GTX 1060 (3GB) windforce OC @ 2051MHz = 526 to 541 seconds / (116W) / 554k PPD

Computing 4 GCW sieves on a Haswell 4c/4t CPU cause each (4) GPUs runtime to increase by 15 to 25 seconds.
Fastest runtimes are obtained when GPU sieve tasks are alone.
PPS sieve on my system have ~6% CPU usage for each (4) GPUs totaling ~25%.

Primegrid's robust PPS sieve integer app scales well overclocked if core and VRM temps allow the GPU to be pushed (no throttling).

I have app_info running 4 at once on my three Titans also together 12 wu's at once. It would be nice to have an entry to add all my cpu's too. Till now they do nothing.
In Top Computers I'm at place 3 now (without any CPU working wu's).

Our PPD neck and neck at ~2.6 million points per day.
You're 3 OG Titans running 4 tasks at a time on each GPU is computing about the same amount of PPS sieve WU's as my 4 GPUs running one WU at a time on 1070 / (2) 970 / 1060 3GB.
I have (25W) 384 Kelper core GT630 that I could add but lately Nvidia drivers are not allowing more than a 4 GPU motherboard to operate without random resets.
At 1.2GHz the GT630 completes PPS sieve WU in 2,000 seconds (145k PPD) similar to my former GTX 750 (1.4Ghz).

Seeing is believing with the GTX 1060. Mine runs at 1938 MHz/3802 MHz right out of the box with my only intervention being the fan (set @ 60%). It is running at about 96% TDP. I also noticed how quiet and cool it is. At $200, it is a great buy.

GTX 1060 a great cruncher - finding one under MSRP even better.
My 1060 3GB also boosts to 1938 out of the box - I have a +120 offset that runs at 2050MHz consistently - 116W or 97% TDP.

Tossing in the wind: Challenge Cruncher reference and to see what the (fastest) runtimes are - could it be possible for an admin with server access (and the time) to create top 2 or 3 runtime(s) AMD and Nvidia list for each of the following GPUs: all Titans / 980ti / 980 / 970 / 960 / 950 / 1080 / 1070 / 1060 6GB and 3GB / 1050 ti / 1050 / 780ti / 780 / 770 / 760 / 750ti / 750 and AMD 480 / 470 / 460 / Fury x / Fury / 390X / 390 / 380 / 290x / 290 / 280x / 280. Or just the top 5 fastest GPU's for each AMD and NVidia.

Getting worried about house temperatures already...

That is always the struggle in my apartment.
I decided yesterday to pop my mothballed GTX 760 into my spare system and sideline the R5 230 for the challenge. This morning it was -25C outside and it was +32C inside and my heat was off. My heat is included in my rent so it's not saving me any money to have the computers do the heating. haha

For the record the GTX 760 is doing a unit in ~1020 seconds. So it's beating my GTX 1050 ti by about 30 seconds per unit.

Or just the top 5 fastest GPU's for each AMD and NVidia.

tl;dr: no

A lot of work went into the "Fastest GPU page", and a lot of that was trying to filter out the noise in the data. The signal to noise ratio is actually very low, so I can guarantee that if I gave you literally what you asked for (the fastest run times) it would be pretty useless.

Furthermore, for AMD it's almost impossible because the server usually only knows the class of the GPU (e.g., Tahiti) rather than the actual model number.

The problem with your request is, by definition, you're asking for the outliers in the data. The only way to actually get reliable information is to exclude the outliers. Therefore any attempt to produce an answer that's reliable would end up excluding the very results you're looking for.

Most of the time when I have looked in the database to find the fastest (or slowest) runtimes for something it's been exceptionally difficult to establish whether the numbers I'm looking at are valid. Usually I give up.

The best way to get what you're looking for is, perhaps surprisingly, what everyone is doing already: report your actual times on the forum. You know those numbers are good.

This morning it was -25C outside and it was +32C inside and my heat was off.

??? Why the huge temperature variance between inside and outside?

In a word, Primegrid.
Two systems running flat out in a surprisingly well insulated and small area makes for a tiny heat box.
i7 4790 w/ GTX 1050 ti (4 PSP LLR + 1 PPS SV) and Athlon X4 635 w/ GTX 760 (3 PSP LLR + 1 PPS SV) combine to make a lot of heat.
The second this challenge is over the 760 comes out of the spare system and the R5 230 goes back in. That change alone accounts for a lot of the heat in here.

I was able to get 2025 MHz with +100/+200 (97% TDP) and I will see if +120 will get me that extra 25 MHz.

Nope...I am not running it for the challenge, by my old 8400M GS (16 shaders with very slow stock clock) in my Vostro 1510 Core 2 laptop averages 84,000 to 86,000 seconds on PPS sieve. There are a couple slower old 8 shader cards that would run these and take more than one day to complete.

Yes, like my NVIDIA Quadro NVS 160M (256MB) with 8 shaders (old Dell duo core). Not worth the trouble and certainly no desire to possibly interrupt the laptop's good sieving performance.

Some more numbers:

- Sapphire RX 480 - 535 seconds ~140W
- Zotac GT 730 - 2560 seconds ~20W

I find surprising how efficient de 40mn GT730 is, actualy more efficient than a 14nm RX 480...

580 stock speed ~860 secs doing 8 threads of SGS ('filler' work at the minute).

Just realised I also have a 260X spare so I could/should put it in a box and try it...

This might be out of the challenge now. I left it running overnight and now the fan sound... unhealthy. Dunno if a clean might be enough or if I should just retire it.

Perhaps the 480 is not totaly exploited, or there is a bottleneck somewhere (CPU part ?).

The start time for this challenge is o.k. for Europe but not for the USA. So if there is any job to be done manually, we have to wait.

I'm a bit surprised...
While AP27s are usually done in the half time on my GTX960 in reference to my GTX760, these PPS sieves here are done in the same time on both cards - about 1000 seconds.
Can anyone explain this?

I have strange thing on my i7-2600K PC with Win10 - 4 tasks uses ~89% CPU, another 4 uses ~66%. I have 2 CUDA tasks too which takes ~28% per task so some decrease in CPU usage for CPU tasks could be explained, but not such big one. Additionally my another machine with Xeons and Linux crunches 1 CUDA task too which uses ~20% CPU, and all 32 CPU tasks there are at ~99%. Strange. Numbers are from BoincTasks.

BTW, this looks like another good reason to switch with crunching to Linux completely. Linux does not restart itself like Win10 does (WindowsUpdate does this, the only option to stop restarts is to disable it completely), plus you can disable graphic interface completely and work in text mode, what will save some CPU cycles.

Well, here are the first results for me :

- 2600K@4.2 GHz (running other project)
- GTX 750 Ti@1.4 GHz (load : 99% under PPS Sieve)

Time : ~1560 seconds per task.

Any idea when we can see the team and individual stats? Been over 2 hours since the challenge started..

There is a reporting problem somewhere and which must also be impacting the challenge stats as well. For example, I show six to seven tasks having being downloaded over 2 hrs into the challenge for my i7 6700k/GTX 1080 but I know that I and others have processed a lot more than that. For example, my pending credit for PPS Sieve has dropped from over 1.2M prior to the start of the challenge to 850k two hours into the challenge.

Edit: A task downloaded 13 minutes ago has yet to show up on my system's task list on PG and yet it is now running and virtually completed. Another three tasks in my queue (one running, two waiting) are also not showing up on PG for the same system. I now feel much better since the problem is cosmetic and is not real as in GPU's sitting idle doing nothing.

This might be out of the challenge now. I left it running overnight and now the fan sound... unhealthy. Dunno if a clean might be enough or if I should just retire it.

I cleaned it and put it back in. Set it off on a unit and found the PC turned itself off. On reboot I found the fan isn't spinning at all. So much for the clean. And yes, it is plugged in. Unless I improvise an alternate fan this GPU will be out.

Stats are on now.

FYI, whether the stats are produced or not doesn't affect the operation of the challenge. I intentionally leave the stats turned off when the challenge starts so that it doesn't impact the server, since for most challenges the challenge will start exactly when the stats would run, and there's often a huge demand on the server at that time.

After the rush at the beginning of the challenge is over, I turn the stats on.

Of course, since it's probably NOT wise to have an admin editing configuration files on the server WHILE SLEEPING, it was somewhat safer to, you know, wait until I woke up. :)

One change you should notice is that when there's a tie score, both people (or teams) will now show the same position. Previously, even if there was a tie for third place, one person would show "3" and the other "4" in the first column of the stats. With this change, they both show "3".

We're almost 4 hours into the challenge. Here's what we've done so far:

Challenge: Winter Solstice
App: 9 (PPS-Sieve)
(As of 2016-12-18 14:34:54 UTC)

26248 tasks have been sent out. [CPU/GPU/anonymous_platform: 4142 (16%) / 21997 (84%) / 109 (0%)]

Of those tasks that have been sent out:

488 (2%) came back with some kind of an error. [98 (0%) / 389 (1%) / 1 (0%)]
19414 (74%) have returned a successful result. [0 (0%) / 19324 (74%) / 90 (0%)]
6346 (24%) are still in progress. [4044 (15%) / 2284 (9%) / 18 (0%)]

Of the tasks that have been returned successfully:

3508 (18%) are pending validation. [0 (0%) / 3487 (18%) / 21 (0%)]
15906 (82%) have been successfully validated. [0 (0%) / 15837 (82%) / 69 (0%)]
0 (0%) were invalid. [0 (0%) / 0 (0%) / 0 (0%)]
0 (0%) are inconclusive. [0 (0%) / 0 (0%) / 0 (0%)]

One final note: Now that I'm awake and semi-conscious, I'll take a look at the traffic and hopefully start relaxing the server task restrictions so that those that wish can start building up tasks queues again.

Anthony A, I suspect your problem with results not showing up immediately probably has to do with the challenge starting around the same time we back up the database each night.

During that period, there's a small window during which non-essential functions will be showing delayed data.

Your computers, when they contact the server, won't be affected. They get tasks and return results as usual. But some of the web pages on the server will sometimes show slightly stale data.

Michael,

Thank you for your detailed and very logical explanation.

Server task limits are now back to their normal levels. You should be able to get as many tasks as you wish, subject to the normal limits.

We're off to a fast start for this challenge. After a bit more than one day, here are the raw statistics:

Challenge: Winter Solstice
App: 9 (PPS-Sieve)
(As of 2016-12-19 12:32:14 UTC)

287150 tasks have been sent out. [CPU/GPU/anonymous_platform: 41226 (14%) / 244421 (85%) / 1503 (1%)]

Of those tasks that have been sent out:

9142 (3%) came back with some kind of an error. [4580 (2%) / 4561 (2%) / 1 (0%)]
172965 (60%) have returned a successful result. [2097 (1%) / 169851 (59%) / 1022 (0%)]
105103 (37%) are still in progress. [34550 (12%) / 70071 (24%) / 480 (0%)]

Of the tasks that have been returned successfully:

57010 (33%) are pending validation. [373 (0%) / 56333 (33%) / 309 (0%)]
115952 (67%) have been successfully validated. [1724 (1%) / 113515 (66%) / 713 (0%)]
1 (0%) were invalid. [0 (0%) / 1 (0%) / 0 (0%)]
2 (0%) are inconclusive. [0 (0%) / 2 (0%) / 0 (0%)]

I have, perhaps, a better metric than those for measuring this challenge. On Friday I got a brand new GTX 1060 6GB GPU. Yes, it's not a 1080, certainly, but the Pascal GPUs are really fast. It's twice the speed of the GTX 580 it replaced. I'm very happy with it. It's fast, it runs cool, it's quiet, and it's so incredibly power efficient it was quite literally more expensive not to buy it. I couldn't be happier with the purchase.

So what does that new GPU get me in the challenge? 183rd place. And dropping!

You'all brought some serious computing power to this challenge. Thank you!

The work units over at Collatz were increased to 8x the original size over this past weekend so as to help with the bandwidth problems which arose as a result of the NVIDIA 10-series cards. For example, work units were now completing in 45 seconds using the GTX 1080 (I did it myself out of curiosity) and which led to many instances the project being out of work.

Is there any possibility for such a need here on PG and similar to what was done with TRP Sieve?

We might do this at some point, but I'd prefer not to. The server actually is very robust and the only real capacity problem we have is due to the way the BOINC software works rather than our hardware.

The big reason I'd like to avoid making those tasks longer is how long the task would take on a CPU. It takes more than 10 hours on my Haswell. For kicks, my ancient Sempron is "participating" in this challenge too. Its one and only PPS-Sieve challenge task will take five and a half days. (No, it obviously won't count.)

TRP-Sieve was made larger for a reason that wasn't typical, but even so, it was only put back to it's "normal" size. It had previously been cut to 20% of its original size to make it more amenable to running on Android devices. With Android out of the picture there was no need for such short tasks anymore.

I am running 24 GPUs in the challenge including three GTX 1060 6GB cards, and I am going to be lucky to finish in the top 20. Serious hardware brought to this challenge, indeed!

Some people must have some serious GPU farms. I hate to imagine the heat as even my limited number produces far more heat than all my CPUs. This might be my lowest ranking challenge this year...

There's probably little or no advantage to running more than one WU per GPU on either PPS-Sieve or GFN. Definitely not on GFN, and I would expect any throughput increase on PPS-Sieve to be minimal, at best.

Did something change? I was going to do this for my 780 and saw your comment from 2014 when looking for app_config examples.

The GTX10xx cards arrived on the scene. I'm running 2 per GPU on my GTX 1080 and 1070 cards. Maybe a 10% increase in throughput on the 1080s, less on the 1070s, and I didn't think it would be worthwhile on my one 1060 or the 1050tis.

From previous experience, it's not really worth the effort on oler generation cards. I do, however, encourage you to try it and see for yourself.

Maybe a 10% increase in throughput on the 1080s, less on the 1070s, and I didn't think it would be worthwhile on my one 1060 or the 1050tis.

I checked both scenarios and there is a gain of just over 45k extra credits per day by running 2 units simultaneously rather than one.

In an earlier message in this thread, I posted the run times (555 seconds for one unit at a time and 1022 seconds for two units at a time) and which will allow one to compute the number of units completed each day and the associated credits under each scenario.

Edit: The benefit is about 8.6% and which is sizeable given the very good throughput of the GTX 1060.

Your reported time translates to 12.68 hrs whereas we have another 36 hrs to go before the end of the challenge. You can definitely squeeze another two units and possibly a third unit if you let the system do absolutely nothing else.

The 10% was a quick eyeball estimate, not calculated. Just tried it out on my 1060 and got a 7.6% improvement -- pretty close to yours (lots of variables involved).

Dang it! now I have to try the 1050tis.

Yeah, two years changed. Or put another way -- everything changed. None of the leading edge hardware in use today existed then.

The GTX 1060 6GB Gaming (that's the short, base clock 6 GB GPU), can't be kept fully utilized with just one PPS-Sieve task running.

A single task takes 10 minutes to complete. That's 6 tasks per hour. Two tasks, running simultaneously on the GPU, take 15 minutes to complete. That's 8 tasks per hour. That's a 33% increase in throughput, credit, or whatever metric you wish to use.

Another thing that's different today is that I need to keep a core free to keep the GPU running at full speed. I never used to need to do that. These Pascal GPUs are very fast, and keeping them well fed seems to be a little harder than with older, slower GPUs.

Of course, as with everything else, YMMV. So don't take my, or anyone else's word for it. Test it yourself, on your exact hardware, to see what works best.

By the way, I have not a clue what is meant by "base clock" anymore. This non-overclocked GPU has a "base clock" of 1506 MHz, a "boost clock" of 1708 MHz, and happily goes off and crunches at 1885 MHz without my having touched anything.

Noted the same and did initially not understand what's going on here....
But after a bit of digging.....

The BIOS of (some of?) the Pascal-cards seems to be quite flexible.
It doesn't care the clock very much, it mainly maintains two figures:
1.) Power limit
2.) Temperature limit
As long as either is not touched, it happily increases the boost-clock up to the sky.
This as well works opposite - if your cooling struggels, the GPU is clocked down to base clock. But I don't know what happens when this lower limit is once touched.

Hmmmmm.... knowing this...... one should think about liquid N2 cooling of the GPU..... :D

Dang it! now I have to try the 1050tis.

Don't forget any older AMD cards lying around. My experience there is:

280x/7990 decent throughput increase
290x significant througput increase.

Oddly, on a rx480 I hit a slight throughput decrease.

YMMV, of course.

Also, at least in macs, the older x8x nvidia cards seem to benefit a lot from running two simultaneous units.

Went with the advice of try it and see what happens.

GTX 780:
average of 511 sec running 1 at a time
average of 800 sec running 2 at a time

(averages are of the last 20 valid tasks, HT on, CPU running 4 321LLR tasks)

>21% increase in throughput for PPS sieve

There's actually THREE limits. The third limit is voltage, which is the one I'm hitting. It seems you can change all three limits, although with Precision XOC, it's a little less obvious that you can change the voltage limit. (And there's a warning that changing it could be dangerous.)

The default power limit is 100% and the GPU is at around 90%, and the default temperature limit is 83 C which it isn't coming close to hitting. It's the voltage limit that's tripping. (The hardware monitoring will show you which limits are exceeded.)

After the challenge I'll try playing with MSI Afterburner. I barely had time to install the GPIU before the challenge.

After approximately two days, here are the current stats:

Challenge: Winter Solstice
App: 9 (PPS-Sieve)
(As of 2016-12-20 13:26:20 UTC)

497867 tasks have been sent out. [CPU/GPU/anonymous_platform: 49280 (10%) / 445961 (90%) / 2626 (1%)]

Of those tasks that have been sent out:

13542 (3%) came back with some kind of an error. [6347 (1%) / 7194 (1%) / 1 (0%)]
366268 (74%) have returned a successful result. [6548 (1%) / 357653 (72%) / 2070 (0%)]
118180 (24%) are still in progress. [36385 (7%) / 81240 (16%) / 555 (0%)]

Of the tasks that have been returned successfully:

76349 (21%) are pending validation. [701 (0%) / 75218 (21%) / 433 (0%)]
289912 (79%) have been successfully validated. [5847 (2%) / 282428 (77%) / 1637 (0%)]
3 (0%) were invalid. [0 (0%) / 3 (0%) / 0 (0%)]
4 (0%) are inconclusive. [0 (0%) / 4 (0%) / 0 (0%)]

Competition is fierce this year. Normally we do about 50 to 60 thousand tasks each day, and of course we're doing much more than that. We're also way ahead of last year. We've already surpassed last year's totals and we're only two thirds of the way through the challenge.

With one day to go, it's time for the mandatory public service announcement about helping at the end of the challenge...

At the Conclusion of the Challenge

We would prefer users "moving on" to finish those tasks they have downloaded, if not then please ABORT the WU's instead of DETACHING, RESETTING, or PAUSING.

ABORTING WU's allows them to be recycled immediately; thus a much faster "clean up" to the end of a Challenge. DETACHING, RESETTING, and PAUSING WU's causes them to remain in limbo until they EXPIRE. Therefore, we must wait until WU's expire to send them out to be completed.

Nothing like losing a pile of work to a power outage in the middle of a challenge.
Perhaps I should invest in a UPS...

We are done with the final challenge of the year! We can now officially say "Winter is here." Unless you're in the southern hemisphere, of course, in which case you may say "Winter is there."

It was a great challenge, with over half a million tasks returned in three days. Well done everyone, and happy holidays to all.. We wish you all a safe and happy new year! (Unless of course, you're not celebrating either a holiday nor a new year, in which case, have a pleasant Wednesday!)

Final statistics:

Any idea why I may have disappeared?

The challenge that covered AP27 was the Wallis is Born Challenge and you are there at 31st. Congrats on finding the AP25 and placing so highly in the challenge!

The Winter Solstice Challenge was for PPS-Sieve which is a different sub-project. You're not on that list.
