Wieferich - Prime Hunters Moon Challenge - 14-17 October

Announced is a challenge at WFS (Wieferich prime search) from 14th until 17th of October. I suggest we start at 12:00 UTC and end at 12:00 UTC three days later.

On the 16th of October the Moon will be located on the opposite side of the Earth and the Sun and its face will be will be fully illuminated. This phase occurs at 04:23 UTC. This full moon was known by early Native American tribes as the Full Hunters Moon because at this time of year the leaves are falling and the game is fat and ready to hunt. This moon has also been known as the Travel Moon and the Blood Moon. This is also the first of three supermoons for 2016. The Moon will be at its closest approach to the Earth and may look slightly larger and brighter than usual.

Other full moons of interest include the Wolf Moon in January, the Strawberry Moon in June, the Sturgeon Moon in August, the Harvest Moon in September, the Cold Moon in December, and the Pink Moon in April.

More about Wieferich prime search can be found here. We're currently at 5.2e17. Goal will be to get to 5.5e17, based on the rate of previous WFS challenges. News and infos about the PRPNet client can be found here.

To take part, you have to activate the following lines in prpclient.ini:

server=WIEFERICH:100:1:prpnet.primegrid.com:13000

Remember you also need to run the "install", "update" and "start" batch file for the appropriate number of cores on your PC. Give it a go before the challenge to iron out any problems. This sub-project supports CPU and some GPU's.

Stats will be available at the well known place here.

All previous PRPNet challenge stats can be found here.

Good luck!

This sub-project supports CPU and some GPU's.

Because it always tends to come up and has lots of frustration attached, I'm going to pre-emptively post some troubleshooting information for those affected to see:

wwwwcl generally does NOT run on AMD gpus. If you have an AMD gpu and want to use it in the challenge, here's the best info I can give you. Do note that you will likely have to satisfy all the conditions.

Cards: The HD7xxx series (and their 2xx rebrands) will work, and I believe the 2013/2014 cards (ie 290x, 285) may work, but no promises. Any card released after 2014 is right out.
OS: Windows 7 definitely works, Windows 10 does not, Win 8/8.1 is ??? (I have no data)
Drivers: The last drivers that ever consistently allowed wwwwcl to run were Catalyst Omega 14.12, earlier ones will also work. Later drivers combined with some Windows updates removed something required for wwwwcl to run on AMD. Link to driver download

------

Nvidia: If your card is OpenCL capable, and you've installed Nvidia's drivers from their website, you're fine. Windows update provided drivers seem to often omit OpenCL.

------

For everybody, if you receive a msvcp100.dll missing error, you need the Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistributable. x86/32-bit / x64/64-bit

Also, people will need to know about configuring wwww.ini, this was discussed in the latest Wieferich challenge thread. /JeppeSN

After being away from PRPNet for about a year, I decided to get my iGPU (HD 530) some work and I am getting the following error message:

--------------- cut here ----------------

Can I get some feedback as to how best to fix this problem? I copied the complete directory with folders from another machine which was running PRPNet a year ago and pasted them into the new machine (i7 6700k, HD530). I made a trivial change to the prpclient.ini file for the new machine ID and then tried running everything within the command window (as administrator). I can confirm that units were properly reserved but no further execution (due to the missing log file).

Once up and running, I will request the proper project and units for the upcoming challenge.

Please ignore since the platform parm was set to 1 due to the fact the other machine also has an NVIDIA GTX 660M. After changing the parm to 0, everything is now hummimg!

Using windows 10. Used Windows 10 on the previous prpnet challenges with no problem. For this one, it will start and then close down.

You have all the wwww exe's in play. Might want to check that only wwwwcl64 doesn't have // in front of it

Can you give details on your AMD machine (gpus, drivers, copy of client output)? Running AMD on Win 10 hasn't been possible for a long time, I'm very interested in how yours is doing.

Two HD6850, i3-6100, 8gb ddr4 dual rank. My internet just went down but I was able to run two at a time using gpu. That is what the screen said at the time. I will re test as soon as internet goes back up.

15.11! Well that is certainly good news, I guess there is a chance we can get Win 10 back in action on AMD!

I tried to play a bit with this app, and have few thoughts:
- CPU usage is definitely a bottleneck, I was not able to load my Nvidia 1070 over 50% while CPU load was at 100%. Better app which does not require so much CPU would be nice (or more CPU cores in my PC :));
- gpuaffinity param in prpclient.ini does not work, at least I was not able to start any load on my 2nd Nvidia GPU. Also there is no documentation how to set this param - is it 0-based index (0, 1, 2, ...), 1-based index (1, 2, 3, ...) or maybe a bitfield (1, 2, 4, ...)? cpuaffinity param description also lacks this detail;
- Ctrl-C for GPU app does not work - I see message that it was accepted, but app does not close. Fortunately after pressing it 2nd time app closes. CPU app works fine, it closes after few seconds;
- start.bat in every subdir is a handy thing when you play with parameters, it would be good if install script could generate it automatically;
- team name comparison should be case-insensitive. I found that my team is listed 3 times on http://prpnet.primegrid.com:13000/team_stats.html page:

1. While you are certainly correct that CPU usage is quite high, GPU loading is also affected by the wwww.ini file. Check the number of threads/blocks and increase the threads. For your 2600k, I'd recommend no more than 8 threads and a block size of 4096 or 8192 for your 1070. It will take up a LOT of system ram. I had to pull a GTX970 from my X5675 because it couldn't supply 2 GPUs at the same time, and while I don't have confidence that my 3930k can take 2 either, it at least won't run out of memory trying.
(From the rest of your post you may already be messing with these settings? If so, then you just may not have enough CPU threads, sorry. My 980ti will use 10/12 threads of my 3930k happily, I doubt the CPU could cope with more than a single 1070 either)

2. No it doesn't. Also in wwww.ini is the platform/device setting. In command prompt, navigate to your prpnet program directory and run "wwwwcl64.exe -l" (that's a lowercase L). It will enumerate the platform numbers and device numbers associated with it. Then in each client directory, set the platform/device numbers individually to what you want to run on.

3. Check your master_prpclient.ini file and see what the stopoption setting is. Some will continue crunching for awhile, some will quit immediately.

The rest are above my paygrade, good luck!

Thanks for reply. I am running with block size 8192 and 8 threads now. I also tried to increase block size to 16384, but GPU load was the same so I returned to 8192. RAM size is not a problem for me (I have 16GB), I am more concerned about memory bandwidth and access delays. In fact I am able to run 4 GPU tasks in parallel, in order to minimize time when GPU is idle (with 1 task it is idle about half of the time!).

I started running with no wwww.ini, and on such settings I tried to stop using Ctrl-C. Before I decided to press Ctrl-C second time, app already printed 4 progress updates, so I assumed that something is broken. I will try to play with options in prpclient.ini, now I have default stopoption there.

If you really just want the client to quit when you press Ctrl-C, you can instead just close the window/program from the titlebar. It doesn't harm anything except what you did after your last checkpoint will be lost. I do it all the time when messing with settings.

And as for myself here near Seattle, I'm being hit by the first of 2 major storms in a row. May the power stay on throughout the challenge, and my trees remain vertically oriented!

I would really appreciate if you could stop this really unfair (against other competitors) bunkering and apply the same rules as in the boinc challenges.

P.S.: I don't mind being last or in the middle with only one computer at hand.

I dont named it unfair, everybody has the same opportunity to do so

on the other hand: this challenge isnt managed serverside, so the boinc challenge rules about the workunit sent out at challenge time could not been handled by Roger or me. Any try in the past managing the pending work leads to much more confusion. Sorry for this.

Agreed, it's fair - as long as you know how to play the "hidden" game. I may or may not have pioneered this technique, but it gave me the one and only shot I ever had of being at the top of the heap in one of these challenges, with modest hardware. The cat was out of the bag after that challenge.

We should acknowledge that PRPNet challenges are now a test of ability to plan and manage prpclient.ini setups, by explicitly saying so the challenge prologue.

I don't mind sharing my Linux scripts for "start", "pause", and "shutdown", which loops through prpclient directories and modifies prpclient.ini files. The real work is tweaking your wwww.ini file to determine the mix of simultaneous CPU processes and threads, for your particular hardware, that maximizes GPU throughput, or whatever other objective you have. In my case, maxing out the GPU isn't worth dedicating all my cores, and I average around 92% GTX760 utilization on PRPNet with 2/3rds of my virtual cores working on BOINC TRPSieve (around 44Mp/sec). Sustained throughput is close to 48Mp/sec when all cores are banging on it.

The essence of the challenges is based on the timeout period of the units. A set starting date give anyone willing to manage their systems a point of reference. Since I don't take the time well, I miss out. Those that do fare well. What I see however as a move where prpnet is losing projects quickly.

I don't run many that are cpu only because of my crappy systems but I have always like these projects.

Just my 2 cents

A false positive (false near-hit) appears again in http://u-g-f.de/PRPNet/findlist_adv.php?proj=WFS and in the challenge stats page. The correct result is:

531859450221304133 (-1 -201031191551102819 p)

so it is not "near" (the absolute value of -201031191551102819 exceeds 1000).

The PRPNet server http://prpnet.primegrid.com:13000/user_finds.html even thinks it is a Wieferich prime :-(

Nuts, that was me, that 580 has been rock solid for the 5 years it's been going. I've removed that computer from the challenge until I can properly verify its stability. Only guess is the brief power glitch we had; that machine was the only non-UPS'd rig to not shut down.

Many apologies!

Ooh, yippy!

Ran a bunch of tasks/tests on the 580, everything is coming up okay, so it's back in action for the final sprint. Doubt I'll pass Scott, but hoping to stay in 2nd.

I might have only been able to do 206 WU's myself but really enjoyed the Challenge even so. Anyone come across the CPU bug? I didn't.

Remember to make a suggestion at the 2016 PRPNet Challenges - Discussion and Dates thread.

Well done to everyone who participated. See you at the next challenge!

Anyone come across the CPU bug? I didn't.

Suppose the CPU app wwww.exe has the same sieve bug for both Wall-Sūn-Sūn and Wieferich. Then for Wall-Sūn-Sūn the presence of composite numbers leads to a crash. However, for Wieferich, maybe the composite numbers are simply tested for the Wieferich property, which is simply wasted effort, making the work unit take longer time than it would with a correct sieve.

That was just a hypothesis. Maybe I can test that idea by studying the (verbose) output from wwww.exe running Wieferich.

That was just a hypothesis. Maybe I can test that idea by studying the (verbose) output from wwww.exe running Wieferich.

I tried with the command line:
.\wwww.exe -p5443934e11 -P5443935e11 -tWieferich -s1000 -v

and I got:
wwww v1.3, a program to search for Wieferich and Wall-Sun-Sun primes.
Searching for Wieferich primes between 544393400000000000 and 544393500000000000.
The largest prime in the sieve is 737830997 (using 38107602 primes) using
approximately 188067 KB of memory.
Searched to 544393500010880520 (100.00 done)
The search completed in 3003.74 seconds (854448.41 tests per second)
Spent 970.88 seconds sieving and 2000.91 seconds testing
Tested 2566538311 values (2.57 pct) of the range

Primes tested 2566538311. Checksum 0000000048f9bb9a. Time 3003.737000

2.57 pct. sounds too high. We expect near 2.45 pct. (1/(log p)) with numbers at this size. It appears this could make the work unit about 5% longer than without this problem.
