Welcome to the World Space Week Kickoff Challenge

World Space Week is officially defined as "an international celebration of science and technology, and their contribution to the betterment of the human condition". It was declared by the United Nations General Assembly in 1999 that World Space Week be held every year from October 4 – 10 to commemorate two events: October 4, 1957: Launch of Sputnik 1, the first human-made Earth satellite and October 10, 1967: The signing of the Outer Space Treaty.

World Space Week consists of space- and STEM-themed events held by space agencies, aerospace companies, schools, planetariums, museums, astronomy clubs, and more, around the world, during this time. These synchronized space events attract lots of public and media attention, thus spreading awareness for the benefits of space education. In 2015, more than 1,800 events in 73 countries celebrated the benefits of space exploration and technology. The hope is this years theme “Remote Sensing – Enabling Our Future” will inspire even more events around the world.

Sophie Germain was born on April 1, 1776, in Paris, France. She was an extraordinary "French mathematician who made important contributions to the fields of differential geometry and number theory and to the study of Fermat's Last Theorem." (Wiki)

Because of the gender prejudices of the time, her early work was submitted under the pseudonym of M. LeBlanc. Later work was finally submitted under her own name and on 8 January 1816, she became the first woman to win a prize from the Paris Academy of Sciences. While some consider her work lacking in rigor, almost all agree that it was from the lack of a formal education that was denied to her based on her gender.

The modern view generally acknowledges that although Sophie had great talent as a mathematician, her haphazard education had left her without the strong base she needed to truly excel. Louis Bucciarelli and Nancy Dworsky, Germain's biographers, summarize as follows: “All the evidence argues that Sophie Germain had a mathematical brilliance that never reached fruition due to a lack of rigorous training available only to men."(Wiki)

What better way to pay tribute to Sophie Germain than to find a prime with her namesake. Finding a World Record Sophie Germain prime would be incredible and even more amazing if it was found during the Challenge. :) Hey, it's possible. NOTE: A twin prime is also possible in this search because of the quad sieve.

While the Sophie Gemain prime remains elusive, a byproduct of the search are single primes and a fair amount of primes is expected.
To participate in the Challenge, please select only the Sophie Germain Prime Search (LLR) project in your PrimeGrid preferences section. The challenge will begin 3rd October 2016 18:00 UTC and end 4th October 2016 18:00 UTC. Application builds are available for Linux 32 and 64 bit, Windows 32 and 64 bit and MacIntel. Intel CPUs with AVX capabilities (Sandy Bridge, Ivy Bridge, Haswell, Broadwell, Skylake) will have a very large advantage, and Intel CPUs with FMA3 (Haswell, Broadwell, Skylake) will be the fastest.

ATTENTION: The primality program LLR is CPU intensive; so, it is vital to have a stable system with good cooling. It does not tolerate "even the slightest of errors." Please see this post for more details on how you can "stress test" your computer. Tasks will take ~10 minutes on fast/newer computers and 30+ minutes on slower/older computers. If your computer is highly overclocked, please consider "stress testing" it. Sieving is an excellent alternative for computers that are not able to LLR. :)

Highly overclocked Haswell or Skylake (i.e., Intel Core i7, i5, and i3 -4xxx or better) computers running the application will see fastest times. Note that SGS is now running the latest, brand new FMA3 version of LLR which takes full advantage of the new Haswell features. It's faster than the previous LLR app and draws more power and produces more heat. If you have a Haswell or Skylake CPU, especially if it's overclocked or has overclocked memory, and haven't run the new FMA3 LLR before, we strongly suggest running it before the challenge while you are monitoring the temperatures.

Please, please, please make sure your machines are up to the task.

Time zone converter:

The World Clock - Time Zone Converter

NOTE: The countdown clock on the front page uses the host computer time. Therefore, if your computer time is off, so will the countdown clock. For precise timing, use the UTC Time in the data section to the left of the countdown clock.

Scoring Information

Scores will be kept for individuals and teams. Only tasks issued AFTER 3 October 2015 18:00 UTC and received BEFORE 4 October 2016 18:00 UTC will be considered for credit. We will be using the same scoring method as we currently use for BOINC credits.
A quorum of 2 is NOT needed to award Challenge score - i.e. no double checker. Therefore, each returned result will earn a Challenge score. Please note that if the result is eventually declared invalid, the score will be removed.

At the Conclusion of the Challenge

We kindly ask users "moving on" to ABORT their tasks instead of DETACHING, RESETTING, or PAUSING.

ABORTING tasks allows them to be recycled immediately; thus a much faster "clean up" to the end of an LLR Challenge. DETACHING, RESETTING, and PAUSING tasks causes them to remain in limbo until they EXPIRE. Therefore, we must wait until tasks expire to send them out to be completed.

Please consider either completing what's in the queue or ABORTING them. Thank you. :)

About the Sophie Germain Prime Search

A prime number p is called a Sophie Germain prime if 2p + 1 is also prime. For example, 5 is a Sophie Germain prime because it is prime and 2 × 5 + 1 = 11, is also prime. These numbers are named after Marie-Sophie Germain, an extraordinary "French mathematician who made important contributions to the fields of differential geometry and number theory and to the study of Fermat's Last Theorem." (Wiki)

We'll be searching the form k*2^n-1. If it is prime, then we'll check k*2^n+1, k*2^(n-1)-1, & k*2^(n+1)-1. We are able to do this because a quad sieve was performed for this search. This sieve ensured that k*2^n-1, k*2^n+1, k*2^(n-1)-1, & k*2^(n+1)-1 did not have any small prime divisors. The opportunity to find SG's and Twins in the same sieve file is appealing.

The average time currently spent on testing a SGS Prime across PrimeGrid is 24 minutes. An i5-2500 with AVX takes about 15 minutes.

What is LLR?

The Lucas-Lehmer-Riesel (LLR) test is a primality test for numbers of the form N = k*2^n − 1, with 2^n > k. Also, LLR is a program developed by Jean Penne that can run the LLR-tests. It includes the Proth test to perform +1 tests and PRP to test non base 2 numbers. See also:

Also, if you have a hyperthreading-enabled CPU, LLR is faster with it off. If you can't turn it off, just restrict BOINC to use 50% of your cores.

Maybe a bit thick but why would either one of these things do anything to make LLR faster? On the face of it I would think that it would make LLR slower? Not that I doubt you but I am very curious as to why this would be so

The topic has been discussed and researched through testing in recent years. Here's one short explanation.

More thorough explanations with documented tests can be found by searching the forums.

I searched the forums and had difficulty finding all of the discussions pertaining to HT (hyperthreading) and LLR. Here is one test thread from a year ago by mackerel.

To prove it to yourself on your particular hardware, try running some tasks with and without HT enabled. The tasks are short so there's enough time to test your machine before the Challenge begins.

In short, hyper-threading tries to give you more throughput by allowing otherwise unused parts of the CPU core appear as another CPU core. If the software can make use of those redundant parts, you can get more done. This applies to the CPU sieve tasks, which do get a benefit from HT on.

LLR software is highly optimised to extract what performance it can out of a single real core. There is nothing left to be gained from HT, and if you run one task per thread with HT on, you have twice the software fighting for the same finite resource. You do two tasks, in twice the time. No benefit.

Running at 50% cores with HT on simply tries to have one task per real core, leaving the HT created ones free. This isn't perfect either. Windows scheduler may result in some overlap and you lose about 10% throughput from this, unless you force it by manually setting affinity.

So, simplest way to maximise LLR performance is to turn off HT if available and run one per core in that state.

I select or do only the GPU primegrid project-tasks but i still get on my host s comp. TRP sieve... how i can DISABLE this "feature" ??
Also during the tournament .. I wonder if the TRP sieve on cpu will not replace a cpu-tournament-units..??
Because it is wrong and i have to end the GPU counting on PrimeGrid because "the special feature impose by force cpu- trp sieve"

Which computer are you having the problem with?

Of the 4 computers you've used within the past month, this is how they are configured:

dtu (venue="Sun") is configured for AP27 tasks on Nvidia GPUs and TRP-Sieve tasks on the CPU.

DESKTOP-SQDTATP (venue="---" or blank) is configured for AP27 tasks on Nvidia GPUs and TRP-Sieve tasks on the CPU.

Lenovo-PC (venue="Venus") is configured for AP27 tasks on Nvidia GPUs and TRP-Sieve tasks on the CPU.

It also has "Use ATI/AMD GPUs" selected, but you haven't selected any tasks for ATI/AMD GPUs. You don't appear to have an ATI/AMD GPU on that computer, but if you did, the server would send it GPU tasks. Since you haven't selected any ATI/AMD GPU tasks, the server would decide what to send, and would give you PPS-Sieve tasks.

DESKTOP-J8HAGCI (venue="Uranus") is configured the same way as Lenovo-PC, but since this computer appears to have an AMD GPU, it will be getting TRP-Sieve tasks for the CPU and PPS-Sieve tasks for the GPUs.

Since TRP-Sieve is selected on each of the venues for your computers, you need to edit the PrimeGrid preferences for each venue and check the SGS box and uncheck the TRP-Sieve box. It's important that you do select another CPU task to replace TRP-Sieve because as long as "Use CPU" (all the way at the top of the page) is checked, the server MUST send you CPU tasks. If you don't select any CPU tasks, the server turns on TRP-Sieve for you.

Just trying to explain to you when i am uncheck the box and click save(for on all my host all the time) -- 5 minutes after still downloads trp sieve to my hosts. And box is checked to trp sieve run again- automatically without my intervention(!) soo its manipulative from this project..

evaluation: it is not possible count ONLY GPU tasks and dont count CPU task : current setting of this project does not allow it. It's a long-term problem. i se it long time...But recently TRP-sieve cpu task push really arrogant to my own computers(hosts) and replace all other cpu task from another project. When i am run and have checked in my setup-host onlu gpu tasks..
Thank you.

If you want to run only GPU WUs uncheck in Edit PrimeGrid preferences "Use CPU" , check "Use GPU" and then click on "Update preferences" at the bottom.
Next time Boinc will update this and you only get GPU WUs. that is what i am doing.

What he said. If you don't want to run ANY CPU tasks, you MUST turn off the "Use CPU" box all the way at the top.

Anyone looking for a script for Linux with SystemD? Made this one myself.
Just save and run whithout parameters, it will set-up everything.
You can add more suspend commands if you wish, CPDN is just an example.

Tested, but not guaranted. If you spot an error, post it.

#!/bin/bash # > save as boinc_pg_challenge.sh to your $HOME # WTFPL cd ~ if [ "$1" == "begin" ]; then boinccmd --project http://climateprediction.net/ suspend boinccmd --project http://www.primegrid.com/ allowmorework boinccmd --project http://www.primegrid.com/ resume boinccmd --project http://www.primegrid.com/ update boinccmd --set_run_mode auto fi if [ "$1" == "preend" ]; then #boinccmd --project http://www.primegrid.com/ nomorework boinccmd --project http://www.primegrid.com/ update fi if [ "$1" == "end" ]; then boinccmd --project http://www.primegrid.com/ update boinccmd --project http://climateprediction.net/ resume #boinccmd --project http://www.primegrid.com/ suspend fi if [ "$1" == "" ]; then echo "Script for World Space Week Kickoff Challenge" echo * * * set -e -x chmod +x "$0" test -r gui_rpc_auth.cfg ||\ ln -vs ./ /var/lib/boinc/gui_rpc_auth.cfg ||\ ln -vs ./ /var/lib/boinc-client/gui_rpc_auth.cfg systemd-run --user --on-calendar "2016-10-03 18:00:35 UTC" "./$0" begin systemd-run --user --on-calendar "2016-10-04 17:45:57 UTC" "./$0" preend systemd-run --user --on-calendar "2016-10-04 17:59:25 UTC" "./$0" end boinccmd --project http://www.primegrid.com/ nomorework systemctl --user --no-pager list-timers --all set +e +x echo "Setup complete." fi

When will the results links for this challenge be active? There is a technical problem at work today so I have nothing better to do than to refresh the results page repeatedly.

And here's a challenge where RAM bandwidth is useless, all you care for is raw clockspeed...

With less than 4 hours to go, it's time for the usual end of challenge reminder:

At the Conclusion of the Challenge

After the challenge ends, we would prefer users "moving on" to finish those tasks they have downloaded, if not then please ABORT the WU's instead of DETACHING, RESETTING, or PAUSING.

ABORTING WU's allows them to be recycled immediately; thus a much faster "clean up" to the end of a Challenge. DETACHING, RESETTING, and PAUSING WU's causes them to remain in limbo until they EXPIRE. Therefore, we must wait until WU's expire to send them out to be completed.

Since the challenge started, the leading edge has advanced 1.03% as much as it had prior to the challenge!

Fantastic work done by everyone. We actually sent out tasks at double the rate of last year's SGS challenge. Amazing!

There were a bunch of primes found during this challenge. More details later once all the wingmen come in and the primes are verified.

Here's a rough count of the primes that were found during the challenge:

Primes reported and visible: 5
Primes verified but not yet reported: 5
Primes not yet verified: 17

Those numbers reflect primes returned during the challenge. Some of those tasks might have been sent out before the challenge started. Also, false primes are very common with SGS, so it's possible, even likely, that some of the unverified primes aren't actually prime.

Oh well, looks like until I upgrade I probably won't "cash" in any more challenges. I'm proud of my two-year-old laptop coming close, but this is the fourth time this year I've juuuust missed the top 300. Still managed to crank through 100 tasks in the day, though.
