A bit of an open question, but I'm looking for possible training courses to go on which will be work paid. My manager said words to the effect we can pick anything vaguely related to work, as historically we've been really bad at taking up the training offer provided.

Obviously I'm interested in number theory and computing in general, but would need to pick a course that is somehow related to my day job. At this point, you may ask what is my day job? I'm a kinda odd mix, where I have an electronic engineering degree but my work is part acoustic test and measurement. That has been on the job learning. I don't intend to progress that further through formal education. The next step there is a diploma which is 1 year part time. We don't get time off work for it, so too much commitment for me to do in addition to the day job. Field of business is telecommunications.

Areas of possible expansion may be programming. I know two others in the department expressed an interested in python. Maybe something in the networks side? I don't think there is any stipulation on the course length or level, so possibly multiple lower level courses would be more useful than a single in depth one. They don't need to go towards any qualification.

So... just looking for ideas.

Blatant plug I know, but you might be interested in the excellent training programme run by some of my colleagues and I - https://www.archer.ac.uk/training/courses/. Mixture of online and classroom-based (you're in the UK, right?) courses.

Most attendees are academic/scientific people who want to use our Supercomputer, ARCHER, but the programming strands (Software Carpentry, Introduction to Python, Fortran, parallel programming with OpenMP, MPI, GPUs...) are actually quite generally useful. There may be a fee for non-academics to attend (email address on the registration page to ask), but it will be much smaller than typical commerical training providers.

Cheers

- Iain

I had found the EPCC course list earlier. I might struggle to justify learning about HPC on work time/budget, but general programming in some form remains a possibility. A fee wouldn't be a problem in principle. As a commercial entity I think they expect to have to pay.

Edit: yes, I'm in the UK. I think UK travel for a short course (a few days) would not be a problem. For online courses I think it would be expected to be done outside work time, if I can find any.

So... just looking for ideas.

Something involving DSPs/ASICs/FPGAs/Fourier Transform, etc.

Relevant to Number theory, HPC and telecoms.

DSP/(F)FT I vaguely remember doing at university... a lot of years ago. Beyond rusty now. Will have a think about revisiting DSPs as that, as a bit of a stretch, could be relevant in my current line of work. I support systems using them, but if there's a problem I usually have to throw it over to a firmware engineer to do the actual fix. In the old days I could fix things myself, but with various changes, both to business structure and products, I don't really get low level much any more.

ASIC and FPGA are interesting areas, but they simply wont be relevant as I don't do any design/development work.

Just got forwarded an invite to a USB testing workshop which could be useful too.
