Primorial Perseids Meteor Shower Challenge - 08-15th August 2016
Announced is a one week Primorial challenge from the 8th until the 15th of August. I suggest we start at 12:00 UTC and end at 12:00 UTC.
Perseids Meteor Shower - The Perseids is one of the best meteor showers to observe, producing up to 60 meteors per hour at its peak. It is produced by comet Swift-Tuttle, which was discovered in 1862. The Perseids are famous for producing a large number of bright meteors. The shower runs annually from July 17 to August 24. It peaks this year on the night of August 11 and the morning of August 12. The waxing gibbous moon will set shortly after midnight, leaving fairly dark skies for should be an excellent early morning show. Best viewing will be from a dark location after midnight. Meteors will radiate from the constellation Perseus, but can appear anywhere in the sky.
The largest known Primorial prime is 1098133# - 1 found in March 2012 by James P. Burt, a Primegrid searcher who's, "Looking for Primes :)". Leading edge of the Primorial prime search now up to 2,147,843 on both the plus and minus side.
More about the Primorial prime search can be found here. News and infos about the PRPNet client can be found here.
To take part, you have to activate the following lines in prpclient.ini:
server=PRS:100:1:prpnet.primegrid.com:12008
Remember you also need to run the "install", "update" and "start" batch file for the appropriate number of cores on your PC. Give it a go before the challenge to iron out any problems.
Stats will be available 15 minutes after the start at the well known place here.
All previous PRPNet challenge stats can be found here.
Good luck!

PRS work units expire in 384 hours = 16 days after being sent out by the server.
PRPNet Challenge scoring counts when valid work units are returned to the server, not when they are sent out. So the pre-load period has begun.
I am probably going to start a pre-load in a few hours, and report what units are finished once the challenge starts.
Settings for the pre-load:
server=PRS:100:20:prpnet.primegrid.com:12008
startoption=3
stopoption=2
When you stop you don't want to keep excess work units because they are about to expire.
Once challenge starts I'll change to:
server=PRS:100:1:prpnet.primegrid.com:12008
startoption=3
stopoption=6
Should give as little boost. I'll aim to keep in the top 20 with my 5 AMD cores. |

Tried this and received:
PRS: INFO: Server has a limit of 10 work units.
So max you can download at any time is 10. |
|
|
|
Remember you also need to run the "install", "update" and "start" batch file for the appropriate number of cores on your PC. Give it a go before the challenge to iron out any problems.
I noticed that the instanceid doesn't get changed by the batch files, is that field irrelevant?
Thanks,
Pete.

What version are you running?
When you first install PRPNet you choose the number of cores by running the "X-Y-install-prpclient" batch file. This creates the number of directories required and sets instanceid={1,..,X} in the prpclient.ini in each directory. The update and start batch file won't alter the instanceid's. If your having trouble maybe redo the install from scratch.
If you've got two instances of prpclient.exe with the same instanceid, the second one won't run. |
|
|
|
Apologies, I don't know what I did but I've re-run it and it works perfectly.
Sorry for any inconvenience caused,
Pete. |

Knowing both Mersenne primes and 32-bit signed integers well, I just cannot help thinking of
2^31 / 10^3
when I see that number. Am I in need for help?

Any chance you can combine team 10 and OcUK together please, 1 and the same lol
for challenge stats:
After the challenge before stats are final there is a chance to bring your 15 tests with a score of 138,104 to OcUK, during the race it is not possible because of the automatism behind the scene
for prpnet stats:
it is impossible

I am sure everyone went out and saw the Meteors (I didn't).
If you did would have gone something like this:

Video is well worth a watch. |
