So, I just recently had 4 WU fail on a computer:
Here's one of the WU: http://www.primegrid.com/result.php?resultid=727666982

Here's part of the output:

Unhandled Exception Detected... - Unhandled Exception Record - Reason: Out Of Memory (C++ Exception) (0xe06d7363) at address 0x773C96C2 Engaging BOINC Windows Runtime Debugger...

Then the BOINC Windows Runtime Debugger starts and collects the data. Is there a dump file somewhere?

Also, I was monitoring that computer and it did NOT run out of memory, it has 8Gb, of which only about 40% was being utilized. Is this an issue with the ESP sieve task, or something else?

Thoughts?

Your computer is OK. This is a known stupid beginner's bug in sieve wrapper program. Boinc "Out of memory" message is wrong because C++ exception which you see in the log actually is a generic "C++ runtime error" which can be raised not only on allocation failure but also in many other cases. I know the reason but I failed to find a person responsible for fixing this. So you have to live with it. The bug actually is a race condition so it appears randomly, but chances are higher if your PC is under heavy load by normal tasks.

Random failure that happened to two of the four tasks at the exact same second?

EDIT: But, yeah, I'll ask the relevant people to take a look at this. The error rate is higher than I would expect for these tasks.

Possible, considering nature of bug. Since PG processes are running at idle priority, a 100% load of the system could completely block them and "synchronize" to the failure point.

Yes, I know exact point in the assembly code, where - and why - it's happening. I just don't know who could be responsible for fixing this - or where latest source is located (link in the forum post points to old version).

Hi Stream, I think we have access to the source code we would need to rebuild fixed wrappers. Can you post (or PM) details of the bug and then we can think about rolling out fixed versions.

Hi Stream, I think we have access to the source code we would need to rebuild fixed wrappers. Can you post (or PM) details of the bug and then we can think about rolling out fixed versions.

There is a race condition reading checkpoint file from sieve app (to determine current completion percentage and other stats). During race condition, file was created but no data written to it yet (file length is zero). It's more noticeable when system had 100% CPU load from regular tasks because sieve apps runs at idle priority and may not receive enough CPU time to write and close file quickly.

Wrapper has no error checking on data being read - but data may be incomplete or empty. Wrapper searches for field separators and has no checks that they're really present. Finally, index of separator becomes -1 and C++ runtime throws an fatal exception. The exception message is really "String index out of bounds" (alas, boinc debugger cannot decode them).

Fix is trivial - wrapper must verify that line is read completely only by checking for (a) fgets() succeed, and (b) '\n' character is present in the buffer. If it's not, close file and retry later. Checks for feof(), ferr() and similar are useless and must be removed (typical beginners mistake; there flags are set only after first read). Check that indexes of separators are valid before using them (although invalid index may mean malformed data, which could be logged as error).

I've had numerous WUs error out this way over time like that, but also some where the app crashes (I get the app crash box asking to close the app) but BOINC keeps going with no progress only time adding up until I abort, with sometimes hours before I catch it (a couple times over a day past before catching it). Only then a new WU will take it's slot. This only happens with the ESP sieve app.

I've had well over a hundred (maybe over 200) or these errors in the past year alone. So yes I can confirm this is a constantly reoccurring problem on all my computers.

This only happens with the ESP sieve app.

Only with the ESP sieve app? It doesn't happen with the TRP Sieve app also? I ask because they're the exact same app, and any errors you get with one you should get with both.

Haven't run TRP sieve for a long time but I do remember some errors, but no where the numbers that the ESP sieve has/had. Also I don't remember any app crashes with it. I also had a few (5-7 or so. can't remember exactly how many) app crashes with LLR last year during a 3-4 month period during summer/fall but none in the last 8-10 months. These LLR crashes and more than half of the ESP sieve problems happened on my 2600K box. I don't know why that one had so many more than my other 3 computers (two 3570Ks and a AMD 1100T). Maybe the 2600K is just more susceptible. Those other 3 boxes had their share still.

EDIT: I do run the 2600K with HT on when running sieves. That may make it more susceptible possibly.

I do run Windows Insider builds on this machine and it did get updated recently over the weekend, maybe its related? I know correlation doesn't imply causation. I just find it strange that a hundred or so tasks went without a hitch before the upgrade and after I'm getting bad results.

Reason of this specific error is unknown, but others errors in your results are "C++ exception" and seems to be caused by this bug.

Exception Code: c0000005

This is unrelated to the topic. Exception C0000005 is a classic "Your problem executed an invalid instruction" crash so this specific PC may be unstable. The bug in topic is a pure programming problem. Debug version of C runtime (used in app) could detect this problem (actually, it's a invalid parameter of the function) and will raise exception e06d7363.

Bumping thread because this bug becomes significantly annoying with new increased sieving task sizes.

- Amount of wasted CPU time significantly increased;
- Since this is a crash of the wrapper only, srsieve process continues to work in background as zombie, wasting CPU cycles and memory (150 Mb per process). Yesterday I found a system with 10 zombie sieves running.

Do you need any help with fixing it or rewriting the wrapper from scratch? (this is not a rocked science, indeed)

Yup... definitely annoying. It's been quite a while since my task pages have shown 0 error tasks; there's always one SV task gone bad in the database. Wastes a bunch of CPU time...
