Number crunching :
1070 and 480

I'm seeing neither the 1070 nor the 480 in the "Fastest GPUs" list yet. If anybody has grabbed themselves one of these yet, then how well are they performing for you with PrimeGrid? In particular, how do they compare with the previous generation, and how well do they perform in relation to their cost?

Heh, I did check that thread. It's not only specifically focused on the 1080 in its topic, but it also has no real mention of neither the 1070 nor 480. (Except for a single recommendation for someone to try them.)

I am interested in this comparison as well, as I would like to buy one of these in the next month or so.

I am also wondering, if the RX 480 4GB version will suffice for crunching only - I have never played a single video game – considering the 1.4 GB memory requirement mentioned in the “Should AP27 be GPU-only?” thread, or if it is recommendable to acquire the 8 GB version.

The AP27 app -- by far the most memory hungry app we've ever used at PrimeGrid, or that I'm personally aware of anywhere else -- runs just fine on my 2 GB GTX 580. I plan on configuring the server so that 1.5 GB is required for this task to be sent out to a GPU.

I know it's the wrong thread, but may I suggest that you set the server requirement to be a little below 1.5 GB? I say this because in the past, present, and on other OS's (hopefully not in the future...) Boinc has had problems identifying the correct amount of VRAM present on a card and for awhile my own GTX580 came in at the high 1400s (in linux it's reported as a meg short of a proper 1.5GB), and all 4GB+ gpus currently sit at the 4GB reported threshhold, which is of course above the requirements, but illustrates the status of the problem.

This is something that can be easily changed and I'll raise or lower it as necessary, once we gain experience with it. I'm concerned with both sides of that problem: not sending tasks to GPUs that can actually run it, as well as sending tasks to GPUs that can't.
The 1.5 GB limit is not cast in stone.
