Okay,

I need help understanding what this website's ultimate goal is and how this whole "Boinc" thing works. I have a few concerns, too.

I know you donate power to help solve prime numbers, however I'd like to know more about how this whole project works before I continue using my older laptop for this, thanks.

Also, I have a few concerns:

-My tower broke which has had a gtx 650ti boost that has helped me more ways than I've ever known, so I'm concerned that if I ever can get a new motherboard to fix it, will my gtx 650ti boost still be of value in a few months, or a year?

-How long do you think my gtx 650ti boost will be of value? If not too long, I don't want a new tower. I would only solely get it for this project, if I can.

-I'm concerned about my laptop and it's ability to be on this website. It has a gt555m, how long will that last? Also, my laptop is known for having thermal paste dry up, I fear this will happen if I continue running this project.

Hope someone can help me with this. I really love this website, but I don't know if I should keep using it due to me only having a single laptop to do the work.

Thank you all.

Define "value". If you mean it in the sense of still being useful, then yes, of course! Every little bit of processing power helps; it's much better than just having the card idling and helping no one. It's not the newest and greatest card, sure, but it can still pump out a lot of crunching.

Now, don't get me wrong. If I was to buy a card, I wouldn't buy a Gtx 650ti boost. I'd buy something newer and more energy efficient. But if I had one card lying around, I'd definitely use it. It's still going to be a relevant card for years to come.

I'm concerned about my laptop and it's ability to be on this website. It has a gt555m, how long will that last? Also, my laptop is known for having thermal paste dry up, I fear this will happen if I continue running this project.

That's a though question... heat just murders electronics with time, and laptops are pretty terrible at handling heat. But so long as you can keep thermals in check, the answer is the same as above: I wouldn't buy one for the sake of crunching, but I'd definitely use any that I had.

About the thermal paste, you could disassemble it and reapply the paste. I did that to a friend's PC; the paste was so stiff that I had to literally use a slotted screwdriver to remove it. And needless to say, temps (and noise) took a dive once I did. But that requires courage and a bit of skill / repair guide to open such device: if you don't feel confident, my advice is to only crunch sporadically, or none at all.

I generally tell people not to crunch with laptops. They're not nearly as good at dealing with the heat generated by crunching 24/7, and it is possible to kill the laptop. Older laptops also tend to have fans and heatsinks that don't work as well as they did when they were new. And thermal paste does dry up.

The few times I've used a laptop to crunch, I've made sure to augment the built in cooling with substantial external airflow, i.e., a powerful desk fan.

Bottom line: if that laptop is the computer you rely upon for you daily computing needs, I don't recommend you use it for BOINC crunching either at primeGrid or any other BOINC project.

Ah, ok. I actually got the gpu for free from somebody and I bought this laptop for gaming, but I just moved to console and wanted to use it's dedicated gpu a bit.

Hmmm, alright. I have a cooling pad as well as an external usb fan which I put on my laptop vents sometimes and it sure does help lower the temps. I'd assume it wouldn't cure the drying, but would it make it fine for at least another year?

But yeah, I hear ya.. Probably best if I take a break from this project. I have another laptop I can use for daily computing, but I don't want to risk this one. The other one is from 2007 with an old core 2 duo.

My $.02 (USD)

1) I agree with Mr. Goetz on the laptops. Unless I'm doing something specific for a limited period of time (like testing something) I don't crunch on laptops. Bad things happen.
2) If I have old hardware laying around, I try to put it to use. I have 4 GT 640s crunching, for example. And your 650ti should put those to shame.
3) Thermal compound is in issue, particularly if you have cards crunching 24x7, as the paste tends to bake dry. Several times I've gone to replace it and had the fan/heat sink assembly just fall off as the compound was no longer providing good contact/adhesion. Depending on the card, this will evidence itself as errors or throttling (i.e. units start taking significantly longer than expected) or both. If there are problems with the card, that's usually the cheapest and easiest place to start. You probably want a non-conductive compound, as the gpu die is small and generally surrounded by exposed electronics (unlike a typical cpu). Also, gpu dies are going to run significantly hotter than your typical cpu, and hence the best cpu compound isn't necessarily the best gpu compound. http://www.tomshardware.com/charts/thermal-compound-charts/-6-GPU-Cooling,3366.html is a good place to start (I use gelid oc extreme on all my gpus, and have had good results for both temperature control and longevity)

Not 100% certain my answer is correct, but I believe Paypal will do the currency conversion for you. You donate X Euros, and your account will get debited Y dollars. At least that's how I remember it from the last time I donated money.
