On May 30th, tng* discovered the 1,549,387 digit SR5 prime 53546*5^2216664-1.

Not only is it an amazing thing to discover a prime number with one and a half million digits, or to discover the largest known base 5 prime, or to eliminate one of the remaining k's from the Riesel base 5 conjecture, but this discovery also is the 100th mega-prime discovered at PrimeGrid!

As of right now, there's 174 total known mega primes.

Some notes regarding counting minutia. There's one mega prime currently listed in our primes database that probably shouldn't be there. I'll probably be removing it at some point. So if you look at our mega primes list, it currently shows 101 primes, rather than 100.

Also, on the Top 5K Primes website, you'll currently see PrimeGrid listed as having discovered 103 mega primes. This is because there's 3 mega primes for which we share credit, although the primes were not found here. Discoveries found elsewhere that utilized our sieve files often share credit with us. Also, primes that are found as part of a partnership may share credit with us. The three primes in question are all PSP primes, 90527*2^9162167+1, 258317*2^5450519+1, and 265711*2^4858008+1.

Congrats to tng*, and there goes my attempt to get the 100th by crunching MEGA units...

On that note, there is something I suspected and looking at it more closely, it seems to be holding. There seems to be quite a lot of SR5 primes found relative to MEGA. There are 29 listed under MEGA and 23 under SR5, and 18 and 8 respectively if we count 2015 onwards. If I look at the tasks complete per day, there's about 6k MEGA units and 700 SR5. MEGA rate seems above average at the moment perhaps due to the impending challenge, but the average monthly day rate was 4.5k so still many times more than SR5.

MEGA sized tasks should be more likely prime than SR5 from being numerically smaller. Also many more of them are completed. So why doesn't that reflect in actual primes found? Is SR5 much better sieved than MEGA? Or is there something else going on?

SR5 n values are lower (currently n=2.22M for SR5 vs. n=3.322M-3.6M for PPS MEGA). SR5 hit megaprime status at even lower n levels (our smallest SR5 megaprime was at n=1457792). Primes are more plentiful at lower n values.

PPS MEGA is sieved to p=400P (that's for all 4998 PPS/PPSE k values), SR5 is sieved to p=12.117P. Both are considered optimally sieved. While SR5 testing takes longer because the candidates are larger, every prime found speeds up testing because we drop all further testing for that k value. I have SR5 sieve files with 154 k values, now we're down to 109. That's 45 k's for which no LLR candidates are created any more (and any untested ones were cancelled). For PPS MEGA, the number of k values remains constant.

Ooh, I didn't know prime chance was related to n. I thought it was the overall size.

You're correct in this instance. Prime chance is related to the overall size (which is also related to n -- think about it). If the base is same, you can compare the n as a shortcut for comparing the size. But comparing different bases, you cannot compare n; you must compare the size itself.

Deeper sieving will improve the probability. Dumb luck helps too.

Of course, 18 vs 8 should really be 18 vs 7 (because you're cheating a bit by taking the statistics at the time of a new SR5 find -- that is bad sampling). Still, if the 4.5k/day vs 700/day is correct, this shows that either SR5 has been on a lucky streak, or MEGA has been unlucky (especially since SR5 candidates are now 50% bigger than MEGA). Which is which can't be decided until you compute the expected number of primes for each search.

My impression, right or wrong, from Jim's post was the n was more important than absolute size here. It seemed counter-intuitive, but there I know there is a lot I don't know. The number of tasks done can be seen in the task status link. I would caution it doesn't have long, long term stats so work rate might be very different in the past. Maybe in the past SR5 was really popular for some reason.

Don't overestimate what Jim knows. He's a programmer, not a mathematician.

I'm neither of those so you're still one up on me. I'm an engineer, and we're into the realms of "close enough" there...

... There's one mega prime currently listed in our primes database that probably shouldn't be there. I'll probably be removing it at some point. So if you look at our mega primes list, it currently shows 101 primes, rather than 100.

I've removed that faux mega prime, as well as almost 100 smaller primes that should not have been in there. The list currently shows 103 mega primes, which is the correct number. So far. :)
