If this news story is indeed accurate, there will be some serious price reductions on existing GPU's over the next few weeks. Perfect timing for me since I will be looking to populate three i3 6100/6300 systems with a GTX GPU.

I read somewhere that the polaris gpus were at best, mid-level. If you look at the specs, the 3.7 tflops for the polaris 10 is on par with a 7970 (from 2012). I'm assuming their published specs are for single-precision.

A 290x/390x is 5.6/5.9 tflops respectively. A gtx 980/980ti are 4.6/5.6.

If the polaris 10 is the successor to the 390 series we may be disappointed, at least for prime crunching. In raw single precision power my 290x should be on par with a 980ti. For gfn crunching, there is no way that is the case. A 980ti can complete a n22 unit in around 48 hours (if my memory is accurate), 75 for my 290x.

Power consumption looks much better, though. This would be somewhat consistent with the trend toward not that much more compute power, but better power consumption.

I am, of course, assuming these numbers are reasonably accurate:

I'm finding the news on both sides of the GPU fight to be confusing, with fans of each side spinning the rumours either way. Bottom line is we have no solid data to go on and will have to wait and see what really ends up in the shops. I would hope both performance/price and performance/power will improve.

We don't have very long to wait since the proposed release dates are May and June ... literally just around the corner.

I was up at 04:00 AM this morning so as to catch the news conference by NVIDIA.

They officially announced the GTX 1070 and 1080 with very impressive gains in performance. The GTX 1080 will outperform two 980's in SLI mode and will have a base frequency of around 1607 MHz with 8 Gb GDDR5X RAM at a price of $599. It was emphasized that it will easily outdo the Titan X. The TDP is impressive at 180 W.

The 1070 is priced at only $379 and will outperform the 980 Ti. No figures on TDP.

Sales for the 1080 will begin later this month and on May 27th.

To summarize, NVIDIA just pulverized their 9xx line of GPU's. Of interest will be the AMD series of cards and how they will compare with respect to performance and pricing.

I caught the event on repeat. Interesting stuff.

We're still light on hard benchmark data but the new features sound promising. If a game I like will support it, the multi-monitor projection correction will help a lot and I'd quite like to try a 3x2 monitor array even more than VR.

I've been reading a little about these two new cards too - predictably though, it's almost solely gamers who are discussing the performance. We really need to know what the DP performance is, don't we? Otherwise they'll be incredible for sieves and WFS/WSS (which technically are sort-of sieves, because the numbers are so relatively small, aren't they?) but it'll be a very familiar story for big GFN crunching. They're going to be slightly "crippled", because of course NVIDIA can't risk ruining their Quadro or Tesla lines. I know those have ECC RAM, but they've not considered that enough of a reason to fully enable DP on their GTX ranges in the past.

I've bricked my 580 by mis-flashing the BIOS, I know how to fix it in theory but I need to wait until I build or inherit another PC before I can fix it. WHat I want is to stumble across a site or shop which has loads of them left over and doesn't realise their power because "they're really old".

That 1070 is a pretty amazing price, isn't it, unless the DP performance is utterly useless then it will render the 980Ti completely obsolete, unless everywhere halves their prices.

Edit: The 1080 is rated at 180W apparently, so very impressive.

I am concentrating on the GTX 1070 and whose release date is June 10th. I do not have the slightest problem in using it strictly for sieving even if it proves to be only good for sieving and nothing else.

Edit: The GTX 1070 should also do very well with Collatz!

I'll bet it will be pretty good at the ocl4 (low) tasks, i.e. gfn18-20. It may be good enough at ocl4 to use that as the selected transform on gfn21-22 as well, and turn in some decent numbers. A 980ti is screaming fast at this, and I can't imagine the 10x0s will be any worse.

Iain can correct me if I'm wrong, but the ocl4 transform really relies on single precision performance. Only the plain ocl transform relies on DP.

Edit: and the new executable will/should pick the fastest usable transform.

I think GFN 21 and 22 require DP so they don't hit the maxERR limit, don't they? No card without DP capability is even allowed to attempt them. Of course I'm not suggesting that the new NVIDIA cards won't have *ANY* DP capability, they will. It just seems that for whatever reason, GFN 21/22 requires DP and so the DP performance of these new cards will dictate how fast they are at those GFN tasks.

A custom 1080 overclocked out of the box, and set upon WFS, will probably earn you not only coloured shields, but some sort of throne at the head of the PSA table, within not much time at all.

I was thinking about the DP and large GFN performance mainly because it would probably lead to GFN 23 being opened up, sooner rather than later, which could again be labelled "GFN-WR". How many digits would a GFN 23 prime have? Something like 25 million?

I don't believe DP is required for any units any more, it becomes a choice of transform. Compute capability 2.0, on the other hand, I believe is necessary.

From http://www.primegrid.com/forum_thread.php?id=6491&nowrap=true#89145

"OCL4 (low): OCL4 (low) is slower than OCL3, but has a higher b-limit.
- OCL4 (low) does NOT require a GPU with double precision hardware.
- Runs on both Nvidia and ATI/AMD GPUs."

and also

"n=22 4194304: (as of 5/7/2016)

CPU transform: 64 bit
GPU transform: CUDA (Nvidia only), OCL (Double Precision GPU REQUIRED for both CUDA and OCL), and OCL4 (low) (Nvidia "Maxwell" only)"

A 980ti turned in a n=22 unit in around 48 hours back during the challenge using OCL4. My titan black's best time is 49 using OCL, with DP mode on.

What will be very intereresting is if nvidia provides mac drivers like they did for the maxwell series. The old mac pros have a pcie power limit of 225w, unless you add an external power supply, and that 180w tdp is really good.

It will also be interesting to see open shroud design pricing vs. closed shroud for the 1080/1070, and the 980ti after launch. A couple of (cheap) 980tis crunching away would be pretty nice.

It was just this, from the project preferences page, which made me think that perhaps DP is necessary for 21 and 22:

3 AMD/ATI GPUs must have double precision floating point hardware for n=21 and n=22.

Coupled with the rules governing NVIDIA GPUs having to have CC 2.0, I think that means that no single-precision-only card can run 21 or 22; i.e. there is at least a certain amount of dependency on DP. You probably know better than me though, so my logic may be flawed.

EDIT: Do the lower-end GTX 4xx cards onwards support CC 2.0 and above, but not DP? I can't remember. If so then clearly I'm wrong.

not sure about cc 2.0 but they are definitely dp. have a 460 that does them but it's slow

So I think then, that because of the sheer size of the numbers involved, GFN 21 and 22 require DP to avoid rounding/maxERR errors.

So I think then, that because of the sheer size of the numbers involved, GFN 21 and 22 require DP to avoid rounding/maxERR errors.

In the latest version of geneferocl only the 'OCL' transform uses double-precision. The OCL3, OCL4 and OCL5 all use integer/fixed-point arithmetic, where there are no rounding errors, but a hard limit on the values of b that can be tested. Generally, OCL is the fastest, but some card with limited DP performance can be faster with OCL4.

Ah, cheers. OCL4 is excellent, by the way, even on my slooow GPU. CPU GFN is also excellent, you can tell that it's far more optimised than LLR. Maybe it's because GFN does a more specific task, but still, it's clear how much work has gone into it. 33 hours for a batch of three GFN 20s on a 4790K is impressive.

How about 50-51 hrs for four GFN 20's running on a duo core i3 6300?!

Once the marathon with ESP Sieve is finally over and done with, I am turning all of my cores over to GFN 20 (thanks to Zimmer!).

Is that with HT on or off? Those are still darn good times (my 6700k takes just under 24 hours per core). If HT is on, try turning it off and see how long it takes to complete 4 units.

Let me step back since I confused the results between my i7 3630QM and i3 6300.

i7 3630QM - 50.64 hrs/unit with 3/8 logical cores running

i3 6300 - 31.91 hrs/unit with 2/4 logical cores running

I forgot to say that my 4790K is feeding an HD6670 with GFN-18s, too, with its 4th core.

Due to the lack of challenges, once my GFN is a nice blue colour, I might ESP-sieve it to the death, of course turning HT on. I might not bother though. LOOK, STOP MAKING DEMANDS OF ME!

It does make for an interesting option. I may be forced to try one to see how well it runs gfn. Or something like that...

Since you could get 2 for less than a 1080, that is a lot of cheap horsepower.

Zimmer,

I would be very interested to learn of your results!

Tomorrow (June 10th), we have the official release of the GTX 1070 at $349 for the standard edition whereas the Founder's Edition (ie. with OC) will be priced at $449.

Zimmer,

I would be very interested to learn of your results!

Tomorrow (June 10th), we have the official release of the GTX 1070 at $349 for the standard edition whereas the Founder's Edition (ie. with OC) will be priced at $449.

From one of the other boards, it appears that Z has acquired a 1080.

I would love a 1080, of course. But it appears that only the FE will have a closed shroud, which is kind of important if it is going to be going 100% 24/7. And charging an extra $100 for a "reference design" bothers me a bit. The polaris cards are cheap enough with apparently so much horsepower that it would be difficult to be disappointed.

There's a couple of wild cards in the mix here for me, primarily related to space, which I'm running out of, and power, which is pretty maxxed out where my systems are deployed:

1) My current "best" amd single gpu core card is my 290x. It specs out at around 5600 gflops single-precision. DP is 704. The 480 looks to be 10% worse than that in single, unknown but probably worse in double. That's in my gaming rig, so even if the 480 consumes half the power (or less), I won't be replacing it with anything weaker. And its an ITX-based box, so no second GPU.

2) My 7990s won't die. There are 3 of them in 2 systems (AFAIK 2 is all you can put given pcie lane restrictions). I could conceivably put a second gpu in one of them, although my prior experience with putting a 7990 and anything else in a closed system has been less than positive (utter failure due to heat). In the system with 2, I have the 2nd one running outside the case on a pcie ribbon cable. Quite ugly. Really noisy. Pulling 1000W. All day, every day. (un)Fortunately, the 7990s put out roughly 8200 gflops of single-precision 1900 of double. The 1080 will beat it in single precision, slightly, under boost, but only offers 10% of the DP performance. Initial reports are for a gfn22 unit taking 150,000 seconds on a 1080. My 7990s do 2 units in 210,000. I won't be replacing them as long as they stay alive.

3) I have an old intel core quad system with two old nvidia quadros in it. Conceivably it could run 2 480s :) That may wind up happening (plan B).

4) IF and a big IF the native mac drivers will run the 480, I'll almost certainly go in that direction. Supposedly you can run a 290 in an older mac pro, as the amd gpus in the newer mac pro are also hawaii-based. You just have to use an external power supply, as the mac pros are limited to 225w pcie power. The 150w of the 480 would be perfect, if the cards are supported. If that's the case I have several good homes for them.

I suspect I won't be able to resist buying a 480 once they are released, if for no other reason to see if it works in the macs. I will also likely swap it out temporarily with the 290x to do some gfn benchmarks in the same system. If it doesn't work in the macs, it'll go into the system in #4. If it does, I'll probably replace all the exisitng kepler cards in the macs.

By the time they release the 480, hopefully AMD will announce their "performance" version of polaris. Or better yet, nvidia cuts the 1070 price, forcing AMD to cut prices as well....

I haven't done much genefer or GPU in general but I was pleasantly surprised when I ran some benchmarks last night. This was after underclocking/undervolting the 280X so I can actually run it without something melting. Only dropped core 80MHz and about 0.06v but that shaved over 100W off it! I think the factory OC was borderline on thermal runaway.

Anyway, assuming we're looking at the bigger gfn units, 980Ti scores 152 on ocl4 which covers n=18 upwards. 280X scores scores 127 in ocl, good only for n=21 and 22 for now. Drops to 78 on ocl4 if I want to go mid range n.

Big question then is, where do the new cards fit into this? Will the 480X still need all that app_info stuff? Look forward to seeing results.

BTW has anyone correlated rated flops (sp or dp according to transform) to the ocl benchmarks? Are genefer units sensitive to core or vram?

The 280x is one of the best cards for gfn21-22 on a price/performance basis. I'm guessing a little cheaper than the 980ti.

The 280x is going to be far less impressive on the smaller units, as is the rest of the tahiti family (7970, 7990)

I run mine exclusively on gfn21 or 22. The performance hit on the smaller tasks is just too much.

I suspect the 480x will need an app_info. I also suspect that an app_info for a 290/290x/390/390x should work fine.

(I belive deletenull and wdetomas figured out how to hack the coproc_info.xml file and make it read only and have it work. I had it work for one or two units then stopped working, so I went back to an app_info).

[Edit] I also suspect that performance-wise, the 480 will be very similar to my 290x. That is pretty good at the shorter gfn tasks, not so good at 21/22. My tahitis turn in a 22 in 56-62 hours per core. It takes the 290x 75. The 290x does a gfn19 in just under an hour and ten minutes. My fastest tahiti completed one in 2.78 hours (and that was months ago when the leading edge was smaller).[/edit]

No, but that would be an interesting correlation. [Edit] Another interesting correlation would be gfn benchmark by transform compared to run times for the various units. It would be kind of nice to be able to bench a card and estimate with reasonable accuracy how long a unit of each project should take[/edit]

Most (9) of my gpu cores are running gfn 21 or 22. It seems to run the gpus much harder. For example my titan black won't hit power limit on SP tasks, even in SP (or non-DP) mode. It stays power limited at 106% for the duration of a gfn22. I have found that keeping them cool is number 1 priority, so overclocking doesn't really happen for me very often.

Plus, having a 22 unit error out on you erases how miuch marginal benefit of overclocking?

That sounds expensive.

Wait, does that mean ebay will be flooded by closed-shroud 7970s? Hmmmm.

Maybe if you're in whatever place in the far east that person is from... wonder what they're doing with it? I see references to mining in the goggle translated version of that thread but is that economic?

On that note, I started looking at etherium literally the day it crashed and became non-GPU economic. Timing. I has it.

Man. got to the page and thought "dang this is a malware sight!" - however as no blocks popped up I was looking and man that setup must take some juice and money to run. I didn't translate it so if you know what they are using this for let me know.

Under load 225-250w each 7970.

22.5 kW minimum. Thats a healthy amount.

I reckon the lower power consumption on the 1080s will pay for themselves fairly quickly.

Looks like a bitcoin or similar currency mining farm. I suspect that he did not have to pay for the electricity, otherwise there is no profit anymore.

Wonder why they didn't invest in the usb stuff that's specifically designed for bitcoin mining? Those things run circles around most gpu cards.

I think in one of the threads someone was even asking about something along those lines when that new project came on line and folks were racking up billions of credits in just weeks. Something about it being "unfair" and someone said, well go and design a stick just for PG.

Yeha it was an altcoin mining setup, btc isn't too profitable for many people to mine right now. Sorry for falling off the radar, but on the bright side I do have a 480! As of now the 4GB models are just re-flashed 8GB models that are gimped, but they can be flashed back to the 8gb models. Unsure of how long this will last. I'm running the vram at 2250/9ghz effective at 120 watts maxish(reported by OS). Once it's stable I'll benchmark it!

I know I need to up the core clock though, but for what I do for work it's working really well right now!

That was bitcoin utopia, it was to mine bitcoins that paid for other BOINC projects - but the amount of money it generates is somewhat low in relation to the clients it supports, but yeah it gave away waaaaaaay too many credits, like 2.5billion/day for a 280x
