GCW - Mathematics Awareness Month Challenge - 01-08 April
Announced is a seven day challenge at the GCW (Generalized Cullen/Woodall Prime Search) from the 1st until the 8th of April. I suggest we start at 12:00 UTC and end at 12:00 UTC.
Mathematics Awareness Month is held each year in April. Its goal is to increase public understanding of and appreciation for mathematics. Activities for Mathematics Awareness Month are generally organised by college and university departments, institutional public information offices, student groups, and related associations and interest groups. They have included a wide variety of workshops, competitions, exhibits, festivals, lectures, and symposia.
The theme for this year is "The Future of Prediction".
The objective of the GCW prime search is to discover primes on bases that have yet to yield a prime. The Generalized Cullen/Woodall Prime Search was originally only for base 13. Now it has extended to several bases. Its currently searching for Generalised Cullen primes n*b^n + 1 for bases 55 and 69. If a prime is found, searching on that base will stop.
More about the GCW prime search can be found here. News and infos about the PRPNet client can be found here.
To take part, you have to activate the following lines in prpclient.ini:
server=GCW:100:1:prpnet.primegrid.com:12004
Stats will be available at the well known place here.
All previous PRPNet challenge stats can be found here.
Good luck!

A Tribute to Lennart
Seeing the 1 April GCW PRPNet Challenge stirred up some old memories hearkening back to the good ol’ days of GCW13. I burned the midnight oil with Lennart (Lennart SM5YMT) on more than one occasion during those times. Little did we know the watershed moment that was happening in regards to the Project Staging Area, PRPNet, programmer collaboration, software development, and prospective projects.
It also reminded me of a Fool’s Day mini Challenge we had on PRPNet in the early days pre Challenge Series. It was on PPSE and the main goal was to stress test PRPNet v3.2.3alpha. It went so well, we ended up bumping the 13 April GCW13 Mini-Challenge to push PPSE higher.
To celebrate those good times, I will be participating in this GCW Challenge in honor of my dear Friend Lennart! In paying homage to him and the other 281 users who have contributed to the GCW project throughout the years, I have put together a little GCW time capsule in case anyone else wishes to walk down memory lane.
It is interesting to see the indirect impact GCW13 had in growing the project list at PrimeGrid. Most notably was its influence on the growth of PRPNet which led to numerous other projects.
Lennart was instrumental throughout the entire process. It is most fitting that he was the one who eventually discovered the first GW13 prime 563528*13^563528-1 (at that time a world record over 2.5 times larger than the next closest). A just reward for all the energy he devoted to PrimeGrid.
A toast to you, Lennart…I wish you well, wherever you may be. Salute!
****************************************************************
GCW13/PRPNet timeline from inception to official 2012 PRPNet Mini-Challenge Series
Jan 2008
Mark Rodenkirch (rogue) suggested a generalized Cullen/Woodall search for base 13 as it was the only base under 100 without a GC or GW prime. Mark was very helpful in transitioning the Cullen and Woodall searches to PrimeGrid the prior year.
14 Mar 2008
The Project Staging Area forum was added to help facilitate new prime searches into BOINC production. We used it to research, test, and prepare future projects. Later it was expanded to include additional projects that would not enter BOINC.
14 Mar 2008
Lennart released PrimeGrid’s LLRNet on his home server. The initial projects were the SGS and PPS searches but over the next 2 weeks 32+1 and GCW13 were added. Lennart single handedly sieved all the projects and performed all the technical rigors to get LLRNet up and running. We experimented with a special PrimeGrid version that included scripts and batching. Lennart remained busy sieving, keeping work loaded, and fine-tuning LLRNet.
20 Nov 2008
Mark Rodenkirch (rogue) inquired about the empty GCW13 ports and posed a question about why we were using LLRNet instead of BOINC. He was working on PRPNet which was “created for those with a ‘farm’ of machines to make it easier to distribute work across the farm.” Additionally, “GCW was the first big addition to PRPNet and that was followed by a number of other searches sponsored originally by PrimeGrid (primorial, factorial, GFN). The main idea is that it is easy to extend PRPNet to get new projects going, but extending BOINC takes a lot more time.” Mark
31 Dec 2008
Lennart releases PRPNet v1.0.1 to PrimeGrid’s community. Over the next 6 years, Lennart continued to test, troubleshoot, and offer suggestions to Mark to help make PRPNet a fantastic prime search platform. We used it to:
- Provide PG users a wide variety of projects to participate in.
- Provide a platform for other prime search projects to receive exposure
- Most importantly, it allowed PG users flexibility AND the ability to participate in more “exotic” prime searches.
1 Jan 2009
It didn’t take long for Ulrich Fries aka Uli (Sysadm@Nbg) to catch the PRPNet spirit. However, it did take a year of stats frustration before he finally ventured on his own making his first attempt on 7 Jan 2010.
9 Feb 2009
Mark Rodenkirch (rogue) issues a personal GCW13 challenge to all interested. This can be considered the inaugural mini-Challenge on PRPNet. Although the BOINC Challenge Series existed the previous year, nothing similar was offered in the Project Staging Area. Mark proposed a GCW13 challenge that ended on February, Friday the 13th. This led to several other informal challenges centered around the 13th of each month.
13 Feb 2009
In collaboration with Justin Van Klein (Justin Van Klein), PrimeGrid started contributing to the 12121 Search. We added the +1 form and began testing in PRPNet. Locally our project was called the 27121 Search.
13 Mar 2009
As March also offered another Friday the 13th, Mark proposed another 4 day GCW13 mini-Challenge.
27 APR 2009
PRPNet 2.0.4 released. Development was fast and furious these first few months. Stability, capacity, and functionality grew by leaps and bounds. With this release, support for primorial and factorial prime searches was added.
4 May 2009
Primorial Prime Search enters PRPNet
12 May 2009
Factorial Prime Search enters PRPNet
13 Jul 2009
Although it was not a Friday, the GCW13 Mini-Challenge was resumed on Monday the 13th. Uli (Sysadm@Nbg) was instrumental in keeping the GCW13 Mini-Challenges going for August and September.
5 November 2009
Generalized Fermat Prime Search enters PRPNet.
13 Nov 2009
Mark reminds everyone about the GCW13 Mini-Challenge.
30 Nov 2009
The 13 days of December GCW13 Mini-Challenge.
To celebrate and acknowledge Mark’s 2009 effort to push GCW13 and his successful development of PRPNet which was at v2.4.7, we announced a more formal GCW13 Mini-Challenge.
07 Dec 2009
During the 13 Days of December GCW13 Mini-Challenge, a generalized Woodall prime 563528*13^563528-1 found by Lennart Vogel (Lennart SM5YMT) of Sweden (Official Announcement).
7 Jan 2010
Uli begins his PRPNet Stats quest.
11 Jan 2010
After a successful year of running informal GCW13 Mini-Challenges an unofficial GCW13 Series was established revolving around the 13th of each month - 2010 GCW13 Mini-Challenge Series. While it was supposed to last the whole year, it only occurred again in February and May. Other PRPNet projects entered the Mini-Challenges.
Discussion also began on the future direction of the GCW13 Search with possibilities of going beyond n=1M or adding other bases.
13 Jan 2010
A hint of what’s to come. Uli is already thinking of Mini-Challenge Stats for PRPNet.
14 Jan 2010
First time manual stats presented for a PRPNet Mini-Challenge.
31 Jan 2010
GC13 Update - sieving was started for the following:
Woodall b=43, 104 & 121
Cullen b=25, 29, 41, 47, 49, 53, 55, 68, 69, 73, 79, 101, 109, 113, 116 & 121
19 March 2010
In collaboration with Wilfrid Keller, the extended Sierpinski Problem is launched.
31 Mar 2010
PRPNet's Fool's Day mini Challenge on PPSE. This is the first Mini-Challenge offered on a project other that GCW13.
13 May 2010
May GCW13 Mini-Challenge Series. This would be the last GCW13 Mini-Challenge as we would soon run out of GC13 work. We had every intention to continue the Mini-Challenge Series for the rest of the year but somehow failed to offer one until December.
13 May 2010
GCW13 Mini-Challenge Series - UPDATE
Lennart continues to sieve Cullen b=13 for 1M<n<2M and the following for n<1M:
Woodall b=43, 104 & 121
Cullen b=25, 29, 41, 47, 49, 53, 55, 68, 69, 73, 79, 101, 109, 113, 116 & 121
18 May 2010
The last GC13 n<1M work unit is handed out. New bases are loaded.
19 May 2010
The "new" GCW Prime Search is rolled out.
19 May 2010
Dmitry Domanov (unconnected) finds 94112*121^94112-1.
25 May 2010
Peter Kaiser (Puzzle-Peter) finds 129897*68^129897+1.
26 May 2010
Larry Hays (Sideshow_Larry) finds 129840*104^129840-1.
27 May 2010
It's official! GC13 is complete to n=1M.
27 May 2010
Sieving is started on base 149, the next "primeless" base for both GC and GW. Additionally, just for fun, base 3 is being sieved to n=3M as a possible opportunity to find a GCW Mega Prime. Finally, we realized that GC bases 32, 75, 106, 115 “technically” did not have a generalized Cullen prime yet so sieving was started on those bases as well. See post for explanation.
16 Dec 2010
The last 10 Days of 2010 PRPNet Mini-Challenge
This is the second non GCW13 Mini-Challenge. After a long drought and borderline neglect, the PRPNet Mini-Challenge resumed with a first look at the Sierpinski/Riesel base 5 project. In coordination with Lars Dausch, we attempted to boost the throughput of the SR5 project. The challenge was very successful as 5 primes were found.
Special thanks to Uli (Sysadm@Nbg) for the PRPNet Challenge Stats.
07 Jan 2010
With the success of The last 10 Days of 2010 PRPNet Challenge, a collaboration was formed between PrimeGrid and the Sierpinski/Riesel Base 5 Project. A bit of trivia, it was Max Dettweiler (mdettweiler) who first mentioned SR5 over three years prior. Now SR5 at PG became a reality.
9 Jan 2011
2011 started off well with the GFN Prime Search PRPNet Mini-Challenge. The goal was to have a focus project each month but again, that failed to materialize.
24 Feb 2011
Ricky L Hubbard (MiHost) finds World Record GW prime 404882*43^404882-1. (Official announcement)
23 Mar 2011
April's PRPNet Project helping the Five or Bust project with the dual Sierpinski Problem.
3 Sep 2011
Mark sparking up interest in another Mini-Challenge..."Anyone interested in a PRPNet challenge or a series of challenges?"
24 Sep 2011
October's PRPNet Project finishes up the double check of the Five or Bust project.
21 Oct 2011
Aggie The Pew issued a low port challenge for 5 November.
29 Dec 2011
After several years of starts and stops, the official 2012 PRPNet Mini-Challenges are established.
29 Jan 2012
The last GCW prime found at PrimeGrid. Ricky L Hubbard (MiHost) finds World Record GC prime 427194*113^427194+1. (Official Announcement)
With this find, Ricky holds the World Record for both GC and GW.

That post definitely brings back memories and makes me nostalgic. I haven't been able to contribute to PrimeGrid in recent years--I got married and my wife doesn't like having the computer on all the time because of the noise from the fans--but I really enjoyed all the time I have spent in discussions on these forums and the joy I got from the emails letting me know that I found a prime number. I would really like to see at least one of the conjecture projects here completed in my lifetime.

I have a similar (but not the same) problem. I run my software on her computer and the kids computer. Both complain that it slows their computer down (especially the kids with minecraft). The fans are not an issue. You might want to consider using fewer cores so that you can at participate even if not at the same level as you desire. If you have a home with a basement, that helps too. I have a corner in my basement dedicated to the computers I use for development. It's nice in that I get fewer distractions from everyone as I'm out of site.
In tribute the Lennart, I will choose a bottle of my finest beers and enjoy in his memory. He was instrumental in helping PRPNet become the success it has by promoting projects that use it.

Tribute Update
It’s wonderful to see several veteran names still holding down the fort. Cheers to you all!
Tomorrow (4 April 2016) is the 1/2 way point of the Challenge as well as the 1 year anniversary of Lennart’s last online activity. It’s comforting to know that it was doing something he very much enjoyed...ham radio. If you had the pleasure of talking with him, you’d know what a fine gentleman he was.
He was generous with his time and resources not only with PG but with other prime search projects (NPLB, RPS, CRUS, etc.) as well. If another project needed help, he’d be first in line to offer his assistance. After Ken Brazier developed ppsieve, Lennart was the driving force behind providing the sieve files to the entire prime search community. He was the epitome of a team player.
So, how are we doing so far this year??? I roughly compiled the daily averages of the past GCW Mini-Challenges and this is how we stack up to previous years.
14,153,424.55 - 2016 April PRPNet Challenge - (GCW)
13,629,726.00 - 2014 August PRPNet Challenge - (GCW)
12,594,897.50 - 2012 March PRPNet Challenge - (GCW)
10,647,277.71 - 2015 November PRPNet Challenge - (GCW)
8,041,073.00 - 2013 April PRPNet Challenge - (GCW)
PRPNet is a unique platform for prime finding that also draws a unique following...those who wish to venture off the beaten (BOINC) path and explore a little more of the hands on approach...although Mark has done a great job in making PRPNet as hands free as possible. ;)
To those who relish the manual effort, thank you for participating!

In the last few hours, you may have seen some statsupdate outside the normal cycle (minute 00, 15, 30, 45).
I made some adjustments due to a user-error to establish any further confusion.
As of now all workunits should be attributed to the correct user and team

She complains about the fan noise even if it is running idle. We live in a very small apartment, so relocating the computer to a location where it cannot be heard isn't really an option. Once I have bought a house, I have always dreamed of having a separate room where the computers can all live and make noise while running long video and USB cables to the rooms where the human users will be. Some day.

Either her hearing is very sensitive or you have bad fans or you need to blow some dust out of the case. When the fans get loud on my wife's computer, that is what I typically have to do to quiet them down.

Dusting the inside of the case is something that has been on my to do list for a while now...just got to get a new can of pressurized air.

This is a tribute to Lennart for his tremendous contributions to the many varied projects that he participated in. He was a great help at No Prime Left Behind (NPLB) and Conjectures 'R Us (CRUS). He was very fond of sieving, something that many others did not want to do. He could always be counted on to complete what he finished and to help with a large effort if we asked. He also could be counted on to move many of his machines to our servers for rallies. He was always cordial and helpful to everyone.
Thank you Lennart. Your presence and contributions are missed!
Sincerely,
Gary Barnes | |

Tribute Update
Today mark’s the 1 year anniversary of Lennart’s abrupt cessation of online activity. As he has yet to return, the outlook does not bode well. This tribute to Lennart is to acknowledge his contributions to the prime search community and to wish him well, wherever he may be.
Almost 1/2 way through the Challenge and this his how we compare to daily averages of other GCW Challenges:
15,819,995.76 - 2016 April PRPNet Challenge - (GCW)
13,629,726.00 - 2014 August PRPNet Challenge - (GCW)
12,594,897.50 - 2012 March PRPNet Challenge - (GCW)
10,647,277.71 - 2015 November PRPNet Challenge - (GCW)
8,041,073.00 - 2013 April PRPNet Challenge - (GCW)
WAY TO GO!!! As an added ‘challenge’, let’s see if we can make this the most participated PRPNet yet! Currently, the March 2014 Mega Prime Challenge holds the record at 68 participants. As of this post, we are at 37 with completed work.
Edit: Interesting tidbit, the 2nd most participated PRPNet Challenge (66) dates all the way back to Uli's 1st PRPNet Challenge stats - The last 10 days of 2010 on the SR5 project.
It’s time to bang the drums and wake up your neighbors. Get them out to the GCW PRPNet Challenge. If everyone here brings one additional friend, then we’d have the record beat. In the process, maybe we can make one of these stubborn GC bases fall to a prime in honor of Lennart.
Thank you for participating!

Just wanted to stop by and join in the fond remembrance of Lennart. As Gary mentioned, he invested a lot of time and effort (both personal and computational) at NPLB and CRUS, frequently at the times where it was most needed. He had a knack for "showing up with the cavalry" just when we needed a boost to get momentum going or finish an important subproject! :-)
In particular, let me extend a public thank-you to Lennart (whether he ever gets the chance to read it) for all the assistance he provided with debugging PRPNet issues and sharing tips on how to keep the servers running smoothly. That collaboration contributed greatly to making PRPNet the stable and versatile tool it is today.
Thanks Lennart for all you've done for these projects - I think we can safely say they would not be where they are today without your contributions!
|
|
Just moved about 20 quad Haswells over to the GCW server for the duration of the challenge. I am fortunate to have some fairly heavy resources at my disposal now (at least in the short term), so let's see if I can pull a Lennart on this one. :-D

Soon the number
(1,000,000) * 55^(1,000,000) + 1
will be reached. I think we will shift to base 69 at that time.

do not trust a statistics, you have not falsified yourself ;-)
due to an user-error for challenge-stats only (!!) 9 workunits with score 154328 are moved from team "46" to "Czech_National_Team", team "46" disappeared

No, I have plenty of candidates. I just loaded base 73 so there would be more work in case a prime is found. After that there's 79, 101, 109, 116, 121 for n=500K-1M and then 13 and 25 for n=1M-2M. Bases 29, 41, 47, 49 and 53 are ready to sieve from n=1M-2M and that will start quite soon. The PRPNet server runs a cron that will email me when a port is running low on work. Obviously we can't predict when a prime will be found, so I like to keep an extra base loaded on GCW at all times.

there are no fixed credits per workunit, score is computed based on the examined number, bigger candidates give you a higher score ...

Suggestion
I’d cut back on the cache. 5 WU’s at 7 hrs is 35 hrs which is getting it down to the wire. You don’t want to have 4 WU’s ready to report waiting on that last WU to finish when the Challenge ends.
You can edit your master_prpclient.ini file in realtime without having to shut down your clients. Just make the edit and hit update. The ini file is evaluated after each test is completed.
Also, if you wish to gracefully exit the Challenge, use the “stopasapoption” option.
Option 2 will report all results, abandon the rest, and then shut down.
Option 6 will complete all work in cache***, report, and then shut down.
// stopasapoption= tells the client that it needs to be shutdown automatically, i.e. without
// a CTRL-C. It is evaluated after each test is completed. It should be 0 upon startup.
// The accepted values are:
// 0 - Continue processing work units
// 2 - Return completed work units and abandon the rest
// 3 - Return completed work units (keep the rest)
// 6 - Complete all work units and return them
// 7 - Complete all work units then shut down (do not report completed work)
stopasapoption=0
*** Does anyone know if this option reports each result as it completes and then shut down after the last one OR does it wait until all are complete before reporting???

It waits until all are complete and then reports just before shutting down. I use that option all the time.

Thanks for the clarification. It looks like the best option is to keep a cache of 1. :)
Option 2 is still viable if you enable it during the last WU that will complete before the end of the Challenge. After the WU completes, all results will be reported and the client will shut down.
Of course, if you wish to stay on a little after the Challenge, those pesky GC candidates won't mind. ;)

11 hours remain in the Challenge. The daily average continues to be quite impressive heading towards 23M!
1 additional participant with a score has been added giving us a total of 56. 13 shy of the record.
We have reached the threshold where slower computers will not be able to return a WU in time to count for the Challenge. If you have any hardware within the last couple of years, you still have time!!! Current WU’s take 7-11 hours.
Please, reach out to those who might be interested in being part of this tribute to Lennart. This is where Lennart would shine...in the last hour pulling a rabbit out of his hat and putting in that final effort to wrap things up. I’m still holding out hope. ;)

Sadly, my participation in the Challenge has been cut slightly short due to some network maintenance which took the machines I'm using temporarily offline. :-( It looks like they'll be off until after the end of the Challenge.
In any case, though, I'm pretty happy with my showing...looks like I'll have either 5th or 6th place depending on how fast those below me can move in the remaining 7 hours, during which I'll be a "sitting target". Anyone want to try and bump me down? :-)

I missed this thread until now. Hoping to finish at least one WU before the challenge ends and join the tribute to Lennart.
I'm glad to see you back too John.
It's good to see you as well. I'm glad you were able to make it to the tribute. :)
I am way out of touch with my hardware as you just returned your first WU at just over 3 1/2 hrs. With that kind of speed, there's still hope for those wanting to join all the way down to 4 hours remaining.

6 hours remain in the Challenge. The daily average is getting ever so close to 23M!
3 additional participant with scores have been added giving us a total of 59. 10 shy of the record.
We have past the threshold where slower computers will not be able to return a WU in time to count for the Challenge. If you have any hardware within the last couple of years, you still have time!!! Current WU’s take 7-11 hours on slower machines and ~3 1/2 hrs on faster machines.
It's getting very close to last call. Please, reach out to those who might be interested in being part of this tribute to Lennart.
Reduce your cache to 1 to make sure you're getting all your results in before the end of the Challenge.
Thank you for participating!

Suggestion
// The accepted values are:
// 0 - Continue processing work units
// 2 - Return completed work units and abandon the rest
// 3 - Return completed work units (keep the rest)
// 6 - Complete all work units and return them
// 7 - Complete all work units then shut down (do not report completed work)
stopasapoption=0
*** Does anyone know if this option reports each result as it completes and then shut down after the last one OR does it wait until all are complete before reporting???
Well that doesn't work as when you run the command "8-oct-update-prpclient-ini.bat" it returns access denied.
Instead you have to Crtl-C then run the update bat then start again.

Challenge is over
We came up a bit short - ending 9 shy of the record. However, we did it in the company of some amazing members in the prime finding community. A heartfelt thank you to all for participating! I'm positive Lennart would be smiling to see all those familiar people.
The participation rate comes in 5th overall. We also reached over 23M for the daily average! That is quite an accomplishment on its own. We ended up averaging almost 10M a day more than the next closest GCW PRPNet Challenge.

That's good to know. With the Mac package, it works in realtime. My apologies for the inconvenience.

Moving on from the Challenge...
Review the options below and choose what's best for you:
// stopoption= tells the client what to do when it is stopped with CTRL-C and there is
// work that has not been completed and returned to the server. Options 2, 5, and 6 will
// return all workunits. This will override stopasapoption. The accepted values are:
// 0 - prompt
// 2 - Return completed work units, abandon the rest, then shut down
// 3 - Return completed work units (keep the rest), then shut down
// 5 - Complete in-progress work units, abandon the rest, report them, then shut down
// 6 - Complete all work units, report them, then shut down
// 7 - Complete all work units then shut down (do not report completed work)
// 9 - Do nothing and shut down (presumes you will restart with startoption=9)
stopoption=3
// stopasapoption= tells the client that it needs to be shutdown automatically, i.e. without
// a CTRL-C. It is evaluated after each test is completed. It should be 0 upon startup.
// The accepted values are:
// 0 - Continue processing work units
// 2 - Return completed work units and abandon the rest
// 3 - Return completed work units (keep the rest)
// 6 - Complete all work units and return them
// 7 - Complete all work units then shut down (do not report completed work)
stopasapoption=0

As a side note, we did discover that cllr V3.8.17 does not parse correctly the ABC format that the PRPNet client uses.
ABC $a*$b^$c+1
ABC $a*$b^$c-1
The cllr version included in PG's PRPNet archives is V3.8.16 so unless you upgraded cllr yourself, you would not have experienced this. Jean will be correcting this issue.
