This is strange from my perspective...
This WU claims to have been sent to me on 24/12, and timed out on 1/1 with no response. But my BOINC cache is set to only have the minimum WUs hanging around. I take a quick peek at the BOINC client a couple of times a day and I certainly haven't seen any stuck WUs.

I've had it happen to me as well. Not sure if it was PPS sieve, but I did have a WU misteriously time out, even though the computer was running 24/7 (and that specific WU never showed up in Boinc's log).

It's possible for a task to get lost if there's a communications glitch between the host and the server.

We used to have the server configured to resend such lost tasks. Unfortunately, enabling that option creates a worse problem where tasks get stuck in limbo forever. It turns out that it's better to leave it turned off. This way the last tasks simply time out.

It's impossible to check whether this is actually what happened in this instance, but it's a possibility.
