In about a week, GFN 15 (32768) will switch from OCL3 to OCL2.

IMPORTANT: Some GPUs can not run OCL2!!!

Older Nvidia GPUs that are below CC 2.0 will not work. (*)

ATI/AMD GPUs, on Mac only, will not work.

If you're running GFN-15 on one of those GPUs, now is the time to switch to one of the other GFN projects. Don't switch to GFN-17-MEGA, however, because that also uses OCL2.

(*) If you're not sure if your GPU is at least CC 2.0, generally you need at least a GTX 4xx series GPU, although there are some exceptions. If you're not sure, you can check on Nvidia's CUDA GPU list and Nvidia's Legacy CUDA GPU list.

Since I run Macs with AMD GPUs in some and Nvidia GPUs in some, and likewise Windows boxes with a mix, the question is - will it just not give me work on the affected hosts, or will it give work and error out? I've got most of the PrimeGrid applications running across the board on my hosts, and the only way I can see to NOT request work for this one on a non-supported GPU is to not run it at all...

As long as the server is smart enough to deal with it on your end, this is a non-issue for anyone that is running multiple PrimeGrid applications, I hope!

You can crunch different GFN apps on different boxes by going to your PrimeGrid preferences page and scrolling to the bottom where you can use separate preferences, depending on hardware configurations.

If two or more boxes have similar hardware and can crunch the same type of tasks, you can use one preference (home, for example) for those boxes and a different preference setup for other ones (school, work, etc.).

The server will NOT send OCL2 tasks to MAC/AMD-GPU combinations, so you don't have to worry about that.

I *think* the server will also not send OCL2 tasks to older pre-CC2.0 Nvidia GPUs, but I don't have access to a working GTX 2xx or older GPU to test it with.

Bottom line is if it's working correctly, you should just stop getting those tasks (as opposed to getting tasks that will fail.)

CC refers to compute compatibility, correct? My GT 740M shows up as 3.0, so it should work, right?

It works on all GT/GTX 4xx, 5xx, 6xx, 7xx, 8xx, 9xx.

This is not quite correct. If you have a GeForce 405 (OEM card), it will not work as it is a rebrand of the earlier GT/GTX 2xx series.

Generally that is the way that BOINC works - it will not download for an incompatible GPU with one exception - if you have multiple GPUs in the system and do not have cc_config.xml configured correctly BOINC may try to run incompatible tasks on the wrong card, which will result in the task erroring out. For nVidia multi-GPU setups, I've made sure to match their compute capability versions ever since then

Message 90392 - Posted: 13 Dec 2015 | 14:16:12 UTC

I'm now expecting the OCL3 ==> OCL2 switch to happen sometime late Wednesday or early Thursday (UTC). Crunching on 32768 slowed down substantially when 65536 passed the double check limit and started crunching new candidates. A lot of computers that had been on 32768 moved to 65536. We went from about 40,000 tasks per day to about 25,000 tasks per day, so it's taken a few more days to exhaust the 32768 work.

We're going to let the queue of 32768 work drop to about 2000 tasks, which is about a 2 hour supply. At that point, we will configure the server to send out OCL2 apps for 32768 tasks instead of OCL3, and lots more work will be loaded.

A few 32768 tasks that could run on OCL3 will therefore run be run on OCL2, but that's preferable to letting the server run dry. Any computer that gets an "out of work" message from the server would back off for an entire hour, and we want to avoid that.

Finally, I want to remind everyone once again that OCL2 is not available for 1) AMD GPUs on Mac computers, and 2) for old Nvidia GPUs with CC (Compute Capability) below 2.0, so if that's you, now is the time to switch to 65536.

And when I switch the n=15 apps from OCL3 to OCL2, those will be called 3.11.

For those running GFN via anonymous platform, app_info would need to be changed once 3.11 is available and switch to OCL2 is done in order to continue work on n=15.

We're currently doing slightly less than 1000 tasks each hour, and there's about 2900 tasks left, so there's about 3 hours to go.

I plan on letting it get reasonably low so that as many tasks as possible go out with OCL3 before switching to OCL2.

So far I am unimpressed with Genefer 3.11 .
It takes 3 times longer to complete and I only get the same amount of credits as for Genefer 3.10 .
These numbers vary very little across all the tasks.

Task:671924691
Work Unit:458929626
Run Time:75.05
CPU time:71.32
Credit:23.60
Application:Genefer 32768 v3.10 (OCLcudaGFN15)

Task:671928331
Work Unit:458931516
CPU Time:225.27
Run Time:221.94
Credit:23.60
Application:Genefer 32768 v3.11 (OCLcudaGFN15)

I am also getting the very occasional 'Computation Error' for 3.11 which I never got before with 3.10

This is on a GTX 760. It is not overheating; in fact it appears to be running very slightly cooler. Driver is NVidia 358.87

That's expected. 3.11 isn't an enhancement. We've exceeded the limits of OCL3 and the only choices are to stop crunching 32768 on a GPU or to continue with the slower, but more versatile, OCL2. The choice is yours.

I am also getting the very occasional 'Computation Error' for 3.11 which I never got before with 3.10

That's not expected.

Those errors (i.e., repeated "MaxErr exceeded") you're seeing are typical of the "overclocking syndrome" we've seen all along on Nvidia GPUs. If that GPU is overclocked (even if it's merely "factory overclocking") you could try reducing to stock speeds to see if the problems go away. Or, since OCL3 seemed to be more reliable for you, run 65536 instead. It will be running OCL3 for a while.

I tried running one of your three bad tasks on my computer (same version of Genefer, same number 16774308^32768+1 was tested), and it worked without error. I can't reproduce your error.

So, OCL2 is hyper-sensitive to overclocking, even slightly? I'm asking because I've never been able to run OCL2 without it freezing about 15-25% into the workunit. Once it freezes, compute work for those work units on either of my GPUs stops, and the application simply sits there twiddling its thumbs, not releasing the GPU and failing the workunit. It does this with both GFN-15 and GFN-17-Mega units.

I get the following message in the event log when it happens though:
12/20/2015 12:04:20 PM | PrimeGrid | Task genefer15_32768_2352665_3 exited with zero status but no 'finished' file
12/20/2015 12:04:20 PM | PrimeGrid | If this happens repeatedly you may need to reset the project.

Resetting the project did not help.

I'm also not sure if it has anything to do with the fact I have mixed generation GPUs in my system (GTX 660 for the main card, GT 440 OEM as the secondary), and there's some funky conflict between the two going on. I know both cards have the required compute capability, as they are on the list (GTX 660 is CC 3.0, GT 440 OEM, being a variant of the GTS450 (same silicon), is CC 2.1), so I'm pretty sure thats not the cause.

What I know for certain is that the CUDA version of Genefer is extremely sensitive to overclocking. I can't say for sure if the same is true of OCL versions of Genefer. There hasn't been a lot of research with OCL.

It appears that your "lockups" are typical of an overclocking problem: A hardware calculation error occurs and is detected, after which Genefer pauses for 10 minutes. The 10 minute pause allows for transient errors to go away; sometimes this allows tasks to complete correctly that would other fail at the first error. This is probably why your task appears to be "doing nothing". It's in one of those 10 minute pauses following an error.

I've seen repeated "MaxErr exceeded" with OCL2 and OCL3 on my factory overclocked GTX 660Ti, which never had any problem with the OCL or CUDA version. Lowering the GPU clock a bit fixed the problems in this case, so OCL2/3 may in fact be hyper-sensitive to overclocking.

I don't know if this applies to any of the OCL versions, but with CUDA we found that the lowering the memory clock had a big impact on reliability, but didn't affect the overall speed that much.

Same for Maxwell. I can get 1505mhz on OCL, PPS Sieve and the manual sieves. But as soon as I put in OCL3, RIP overclock. I have to back it all the way to 1430. Still a very nice OC from the 1326 base, though.
