With the year 2016 showing up on the horizon, it's time to start thinking about the challenge schedules for next year. So that's just what I've done. Below is the tentative schedule I've come up with.

2016 Challenge Series Start End Time UTC Project Challenge Duration 1 7-Jan 15-Jan 18:00:00 GFN-TBD Makar Sankranti 8 days 2 14-Mar 17-Mar 03:14:15 SR5 From Pi to Paddy 3 days 3 1-May 9-May 18:00:00 WOO/CUL Mercury Transit 8 days 4 20-Jun 25-Jun 22:34:00 PPS Mega Summer solstice 5 days 5 2-Aug 5-Aug 21:00:00 TRP Sieve Summer Olympics 3 days 6 2-Sep 7-Sep 18:00:00 ESP Sieve Summer Paralympics 5 days 7 3-Oct 4-Oct 18:00:00 SGS LLR World Space Week Kickoff 24 hours 8 12-Nov 17-Nov 18:00:00 ESP LLR Leonids Shower 5 days 9 18-Dec 21-Dec 10:44:00 PPS Sieve Winter Solstice 3 days

There are a couple of points to take note of. I will detail them in no particular order.

Long time participants will notice a departure of tradition on the first challenge of the year. Before I used to theme it around the Chinese New Year, but last year we got participant feedback telling us it's considered particularly unlucky to celebrate this before the actual new year starts. As Chinese New Year falls in the middle of the Tour the Primes (a.k.a. the whole month of February), there will be no challenge with that theme in 2016.

Another request I've seen a couple of times is a combined Cullen/Woodal challenge. You will find this in the month of May.

The first planned challenge for next year will be on GFN, but which ones will decided later. We need to take a look at task lengths when we're closer to the starting date.

With regards to the challenge leaderboard scoring I do not expect to implement any changes. I will take a look at the participation rate of this year after the cleanup of the previous two challenges is done to double check.

Finally, I'm looking forward to a well behaved discussion about the proposed schedule.

Am disappointed in that I see no names for the horde or even the herd for that matter.

Cheers from a royal rattie :)

Good work putting together the Challenge calendar. I know how hard it is.
My brother is currently in India studying to be a Yoga instructor, so I like the idea of celebrating Makar Sankranti:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Makar_Sankranti
Can you explain the "From Pi to Paddy"?
Thanks!

March 14 (3/14, at least as denoted in some countries) is "PI Day". March 17 is St. Patrick's Day.

Message 89739 - Posted: 14 Nov 2015 | 16:03:03 UTC - in response to Message 89713.

Once again, a nice mix of old and new ideas. I like the "from Pi to Paddy" and that there's also a Paralympics challenge after the Olympics challenge.

The project selection also reflects the variety of PG's projects, there's long (CUL/WOO), medium (SR5, PPS-Mega, ESP) and short LLR (SGS), all BOINC sieves, and GFN. I assume that with a duration of 8 days the GFN challenge in January will focus on the longer tasks (n>=19), so perhaps one of the medium LLR challenges could be replaced with short GFN.

19th of April would be James Cullen's 149th (prime!) birthday, which presents another nice opportunity to hunt for Cullen primes and Cullen primes of the second kind (aka Woodall primes). I therefore suggest a James Cullen Challenge from 19 Apr to 27 Apr instead of the Mercury Transit, also eliminating the overlap with the Pentathlon.

I also thought a bit about the November challenge. The Leonids shower hasn't been very strong in recent years and for 2016, an even weaker maximum has been predicted (Maslov, 2007) which will be washed out by an almost full moon. Alternative themes that came to my mind for the month of November are

    - Mexican holiday Día de Muertos (although this would be most suitable for a 3 day challenge from 31 Oct to 02 Nov; perhaps 3 days with short GFN instead of the 5 days with ESP?),
    - beginning of the ancient Roman winter solstice festival Brumalia on 24 Nov,
    - John Wallis's 400th birthday on 23 Nov.

Can you explain the "From Pi to Paddy"?

March 14 (3/14, at least as denoted in some countries) is "PI Day". March 17 is St. Patrick's Day.

Charley,

Thank you!!

I'm pleased to see that Cullen gets more than 5 days!

If you compare the durations to the current average run times, the subproject with the fewest WUs completed is Woodall, at just less than 2. If you extended the WOO/CUL challenge to 10 days, that should make managing resources more of a challenge as the average user could get 2 rounds in and maybe squeeze a few more bonus tasks in.

I would also suggest that the ESP-Sieve challenge is too long, if you want to shave off somewhere.

As for GFN, if you run just the smaller ones that might make it very interesting but I prefer the WR 15 day challenge we had in 2014.

Finally, would it be possible to update the standings immediately after the challenge with the warning that results are provisional until finalised. Waiting for 3 months for an update was so painful I had to work it out for myself and I'm a lazy dog.

Thanks again!!

s.

I've got no problems with anything there, but it really would be nice to see a PSP challenge. I was going to suggest an SoB as well (or in combination with it) but I suppose most people would only have time to return one WU per core, unless it was a multi-week challenge. Not that there would be anything wrong with that, though, aside from people being unaware of the length of the tasks when they start them.

Just thinking aloud.

Let me point out that responded pschoefer two points:

a) the conflict with the Penthatlon in may
In the past SETI.Germany drove a lot of effort to bring fun to the BOINC community and the community took it gratefully. The Mercury Transit in May isnt as much related to PrimeGrid as the suggested James Cullen Challenge. So I fully support this shift

b) the conflict with the WCG-Birthday-Challenge in november
there are some funny new ideas in the post of pschoefer. I would like to give them a chance in particular because the full moon will make the weak meteor shower invisible

jm2c! thanks in advance

Thanks for all the suggestions. I changed the Mercury transit to Cullen's Birthday and the Leonids one the Wallis' Birthday.

Details for the GFN challenge are still being discussed, but the goal is to include as many sizes as we can without blowing up the server.

I've also lengthened the Cullen challenge to 9 days. This brings the total to 42 days. I think this is still okay. Should the average runtime have significantly increased by the beginning of April, so that 9 days is again too short to fit in 2 sets I'll evaluate if it needs to be 10 days.

I'll adjust the scores accordingly somewhen soon.

With regards to PSP/SoB challenges, I'm keeping those for 2017 again. Mainly because these would require either a very long single project challenge (15 days) or long multi-project challenge (8 days). For the first there's no room and for the second it would either have to replace GFN or WOO/CUL which I like both like a bit better this year. GFN because there's a better chance of finding primes and WOO/CUL because of James Cullen's prime birthday.

Completely understand that. Also, I suppose more people are likely to own AVX/FMA-capable CPUs in 2017.

Thanks for moving Cullen/Woodal so it is not overlapping with traditional BOINC Pentathlon (May 5-19).

Another overlap is ESP LLR with Formula BOINC.
Moving it to the beginning of the month would help.

Ok. And why do you think this?

Ok. And why do you think this?

Many people do testing to see how times are doing at what OC settings (or whatever adjustments that may need to be made) just previous to challenges even with SGSs short WUs. It just seems the setting up (however minimal for most), for both users AND administrators is not worth a single day of of a challenge, for some, and is not worth the participation in the first place for a few. And even some may feel a little lazy changing 'preferences' (or learning how to for new user) for such a short challenge. That's why a 2 day minimum should be implemented.

There were 890 "participants" in this year's 3 day SGS challenge (Leonids Shower) and 821 "participants" in last year's 1 day SGS challenge (Saint Nicholas'). Of course, it's hard to compare because more crunchers who are not even aware of the challenge may complete a couple of WUs in three days than in one day, but I don't think that too many people skipped last year's SGS challenge just because of the short duration.

I personally prefer the challenges where every single WU is important, i.e. only a low number of WUs can be completed, so I'd vote for keeping the minimum duration at 24 hours. There's also a 5 day challenge with short ESP-Sieve WUs scheduled for everyone who likes it the other way around. ;)

16 days is way too long for SGS. Shorter task times should equate to shorter Challenge duration and shorter cleanup.

I prefer 1 day, or 3 days at the most if that is the majority preference.

Even I, who rarely miss challenges (except when I CAN'T participate, like when I was in the hospital earlier this year), had considered skipping this one (I am a lazy person at times), but I probably won't. Still I think a 2 day minimum Should be implemented. A 24 hour challenge is like, after it starts, you blink and it's over. And as far as longer subprojects for 2016 they should AT LEAST run 1 WU from an AMD 4 core PII 955x4 (or an AMD 2 core equivalent, the PII 560x2) with a little buffer room.

In 2017 things will be different. AMD will have their ZEN cores CPU out. Real full FP cores for EACH core including AVX512 that works, and will be about 40% faster IPC (Instructions Per Clock) than their fastest Bulldozer core(similar to Intel's FP, when all of AMD's 8 cores are running, and yes, there will be up to 8 real CPU cores with SMT (simultaneous multithreading just like Intel, so up to 16 threads) than Carrizo (only 4 cores), clock for clock and will be nearly caught up with Intel (and may be equivalent or even a little faster than Intel in 2018 with their ZEN+ cores release ). So things will be a lot different in 2017, as well as 2018.

I like the idea of a one-day challenge on short projects now and then. Sort of an "acid test" for one's boinc management skills.

I will point out that in the latest proposed schedule (msg 90173) I see the following:

3 19-Apr 27-apr 01:49:00 WOO/CUL Cullen Birthday 9 days

That's only 8 days, or the start/end needs to be adjusted.

Yes, Charley did change it.

As far as 1 day challenges are concerned, if a 1 day challenge must be run please limit it to once a year. That would be acceptable I assume.

How about a 6-hour PPSE-only task then? I'm only 20% joking. As long as it doesn't replace another challenge. There'll be room for it and the.cleanup will be... short, I assume.

Thanks for the input NeoMetal* and others. I get your point of view. Funnily enough, the reason "because the big boys might have a hard time" is exactly why I'm very much in favor of having a 24h challenge. This gives the average participant a better chance of getting higher up on the leaderboards for once :)

I'm more than happy to keep it at no more than one (that is 0 or 1) 24h challenge per year.

With regards to the Cullen Birthday Challenge, the end date has been moved up a day to the 28th to actually make it 9 days.

Proposed 2016 challenge schedule page, based on Charley's schedule:

http://www.primegrid.com/challenge/2016_challenge.php

One thing that needs to be corrected is that there's no point schedule for a 9 day challenge.

Please note that the GFN projects included in the first challenge are only tentative and may change between now and then.

Just curious as to how you made the GFN project list? I noticed the 15, 16 and 17-low are out. Just thought that if it's a GFN challenge any GFN project should be included unless it will overwork the server.

Cheers

We can do challenges with big tasks.

We can do challenges with short tasks.

We can't do both in a single challenge. It's the equivalent of the Ghostbusters crossing the proton streams. Bad things will happen.

Wasn't sure if a decision had been made on the replacement for the Summer Paralympics Challenge but wanted to throw out maybe having a low GFN challenge. We've always done the high end. I know this might stress the server and it's listed as a 5 day run so it might not be feasible unless the challenge is shortened. Just a thought.

Cheers

We probably won't make a decision until it's clear when AP27 will be ready to go live. It would make a good replacement if it's ready in time.

Having a small GFN challenge isn't a terrible idea. We've never had one. It wouldn't be a prohibitively large load on the server. The problem with server loading isn't long tasks, or short tasks. It's mixing long and short tasks in a single challenge. The problem lies in having the server store millions of short tasks for the months required for long task cleanups to complete. A short-task cleanup will only last about two weeks because of the short deadlines. But if you combine it with the long deadlines from the big tasks, the database would grow dramatically due to not being able to purge all those short tasks for several months. So, a short GFN challenge could be done.

Also, if we do a GFN15/GFN16/GFN17LOW challenge (the three that were not included in the big GFN challenge in January), I suspect many people would opt for running 17LOW rahter than the shorter 15 and 16 tasks. 15 and 16 use the slowest transform, but 17LOW runs one of the faster transforms, therefor it generates more credits per hour. If that's in fact what most people do, it won't be that big of a load.

TRP-LLR would be a good choice as well. We'd have a TRP-Sieve challenge followed by a TRP-LLR challenge.

One side benefit of a low GFN would be lots of primes being found.. based on current trends :)

Not sure on the AP27 but that would be a good one as well.

Also, if we do a GFN15/GFN16/GFN17LOW challenge (the three that were not included in the big GFN challenge in January), I suspect many people would opt for running 17LOW rather than the shorter 15 and 16 tasks. 15 and 16 use the slowest transform, but 17LOW runs one of the faster transforms, for it generates more credits per hour. If that's in fact what most people do, it won't be that big of a load.

Also, the CPU versions are on the slower 80 bit transform for all 3 including 17 low. So no real advantage on which to run on CPU. But on GPUs only 17 low has a credit/score to time advantage of the 3 low GFN sub projects. So for CPUs there may be a fairly even amount of spread between the 3 (maybe not), but the majority of GPUs would probably run 17 low.

TRP-LLR would be a good choice as well. We'd have a TRP-Sieve challenge followed by a TRP-LLR challenge.

I like this idea better unless AP27 gets going by then, then we could run that instead.

I tallied up all of the challenges we've ever run on the BOINC server to see if there's anything else we might want to consider. Here's all the active projects that are currently NOT on the 2016 schedule:

321: Historically, we've run a 321 challenge every year, except for last year and this year (and in 2008, when we ran it twice.) Do we want to skip it two years in a row?

PSP & SoB: Too long to run in September. (The cleanup would extend into 2017.)

PPS & PPSE: These two are the major contributors working to push SGS off the bottom of the T5K list, so we're not going to be running a PPS or PPSE challenge at this time.

TRP: Historically, we've run a TRP challenge every year. Do we want to skip it this year?

GFN15, 16, and 17-Low: These only started last Fall, and weren't included in the January challenge, so we've never had a challenge with these tasks.

AP26/27: If it's ready, this would be the first AP## challenge since 2009.

In years past, we have run the same challenge twice several times. It used to be common to run two PPS-LLR challenges every year, for example. We even ran the same project three times in 2008. We could repeat a project again if we wanted to, but I suspect that most would prefer to see something added to the schedule that isn't already on the 2016 schedule.

I would definitely like to see a kick-off challenge for AP27. It doesn't have to be in the exact slot that ESP was in. We could try to shuffle around what we have remaining.
For example, we could have PPS-Sieve move to the Paralympics Challenge and have AP27 be the Winter Solstice Challenge. That way we would have plenty of time to get AP27 launched and bug free versus trying to push for a September challenge.

If AP is delayed ever so slightly (or longer), would a corresponding (slight) extension for ESP Sieve be possible and especially in lieu of the fact that the slot for ESP Sieve was destined for AP?

No. The ESP sieve is no longer doing useful work. The only reason we extended it to the end of the month was because we promised we would give a month's warning so people who are trying to get a badge won't have to stop crunching unexpectedly.

Furthermore, the purpose of the challenges is to encourage people to crunch projects we want to promote. We certainly don't want to promote a project we don't see a need to run anymore. We would be wasting an opportunity.

My take one this: shuffle ESP LLR in place of ESP SV and let the current ESP LLR spot open for AP27. This will most likely give us enough time to finish the necessary adjustments to the software and get it ready into production.

My take one this: shuffle ESP LLR in place of ESP SV and let the current ESP LLR spot open for AP27. This will most likely give us enough time to finish the necessary adjustments to the software and get it ready into production.

That's a viable possibility.

Sounds good to me. I like the idea of a kickoff challenge for AP27 too, but it's probably a good idea to make sure it's stable first.

Sounds like the best idea yet. This would give AP27 a little more leeway to get going and work out any possible kinks before an AP27 challenge.

Agreed. We don't want to rush a challenge and then find out halfway through that there's a bug, or certain devices don't work like they should, or some other problem.

If AP27 is not ready or stable, let's run 321 since it was not run last year.

If AP27 is not ready or stable, let's run 321 since it was not run last year.

Also a good idea.

Official change:

The September Paralympics challenge, originally planned for the now-suspended ESP-Sieve application, has been changed to the ESP-LLR application. The length of the challenge remains at 5 days, as does the start time of September 2nd at 18:00:00 UTC.

The November Wallis is Born Challenge, originally scheduled to be a 5 day ESP-LLR challenge, will likely be changed to be an AP27 challenge. This decision will be made at a later date. Depending on how large the AP27 tasks are we may change the length of this challenge.

I'd like to thank everyone for their thoughtful contributions to this discussion. (Moving the ESP-LLR challenge to September was an idea that originated on the forums.)

You won't be disappointed.

You can also expect BOTH a PSP and an SoB challenge during the year to help push their respective double check efforts. (I expect us to start double checking SoB sometime in 2017.)

I would hope to see an early and lengthy GCW sieve challenge to help bring about the llr project.

You won't be disappointed.

You can also expect BOTH a PSP and an SoB challenge during the year to help push their respective double check efforts. (I expect us to start double checking SoB sometime in 2017.)

Make the SoB challenge a double. We gotta pay our respects to the death of the project...

That's our desire also, but you can't always get what you want. Consider:

* There's not much left that isn't LLR (or GFN), so it's rather hard to avoid running an LLR challenge in the Summer.

* Which is worse for the summer: a challenge with big numbers (that run with lower heat generation) but run for more days, or a short challenge with small numbers that uses more power and causes your CPU to run hotter?

* Your summer is someone else's winter. Our challenge coordinator is from Australia, so we can expect the schedule to reflect the needs of residents of both hemispheres. (This is a good thing!)

Personally, I'm in the same boat as you. I stop crunching completely when it's hot enough to need air conditioning.

* There's not much left that isn't LLR (or GFN), so it's rather hard to avoid running an LLR challenge in the Summer.

Perhaps PPS Sieve, GCW Sieve and TRP Sieve (if still around) can be left for the summer months. I read somewhere from a few months ago about a possible GFN Sieve coming onto BOINC as well (Edit: I misread the particular message back from early June ... please ignore).

* Which is worse for the summer: a challenge with big numbers (that run with lower heat generation) but run for more days, or a short challenge with small numbers that uses more power and causes your CPU to run hotter?

My personal choice would be the former with lower heat generation but I am sure one can argue either way.

* Your summer is someone else's winter. Our challenge coordinator is from Australia, so we can expect the schedule to reflect the needs of residents of both hemispheres. (This is a good thing!)

Good point and perhaps the ultimate problem!

Personally, I'm in the same boat as you. I stop crunching completely when it's hot enough to need air conditioning.

I see sieving as perhaps being a saving grace but it is a problem either way when you are battling 35d C ambient temps.

I'd favor a shorter challenge -- easier for me to tolerate the heat for a shorter time.

As far as CPUs running hotter, how much of a problem is that really? I have two older systems that ran all summer in my garage (in Central TX) with no problems.

I would avoid GPU challenges during the summer (but which summer?).

* Your summer is someone else's winter. Our challenge coordinator is from Australia, so we can expect the schedule to reflect the needs of residents of both hemispheres. (This is a good thing!)

I could use a garage heater in the winter, but I'm not sure anything works well at -40. It also would be a disaster for water-cooled CPUs if the power goes off. Maybe those things should have car radiator antifreeze in them with water; antifreeze raises the boiling point. Unfortunately, ideal cooling happens with 100% water in the mix. https://hellafunctional.com/?p=629

Prime Grid. RE; 101648 tng*
Reading tng* post I think he brought a overlooked but very pertinent issue to light. Biggest issue seems to be performance and it’s constant battle with it's arch enemy heat. Performance is lockstep with heat. And as tng* said the number one determinate is where you live and what contest is du jour’ Appearance would suggest it most fair to put the most dependent contest at a time of year when spring is most constant in both hemispheres. Other remedies might be to alternate the most dependent contest. Perhaps the areas of greatest per capita of active Bonic users and using this to allocate the percentage of programs to the respective hemispheres. Maybe even allocate the most critical contest ,simply to the hemisphere of greatest number of active users. Oh well there are many ways to skin this pig, other ideas please. Myself I do not like the 3 day challenges. You set up and it is over. I would much prefer at least 5 days as the shortest contest and even a 12 or 15 day contest. Another thought is to increase the number of contest, too few now in my opinion. My last thought pertains to the the clout of the PG name. If PG would be willing to lend it’s help to programs of great promise but are unknown or ignored PG’s could use it’s name and ability of promotion to include these unrecognized programs in it’s contest line ups. One could have 2 tiers of contest straight, and second tier PG recommends. Before I put the cork back in my head and the “dredges” spill out. I enjoy that people of renown such as thg* take the time to offer suggestion and that they can be used as segways for the less endowed and productive, LOL THANKS Sun Badger*
