Hi,

I would like to know if using the gpu on pci express 3 or 2.0 on 16X or 8X does make any difference on gpu time computing?

thank you

It sort of depends on how much info is being shared back and forth from the system to the gpu while crunching, but basically no. As long as you have an 8x connection most gpu's will work just fine, when you drop to the 1x connections though there is a huge backup of data and your RAC will drop dramatically. Yes a 16x IS faster than an 8x one, but not by a whole lot in Boinc crunching and you may not even notice it unless you pay close attention. Credits rise and fall on a daily basis just because, and the 8x is very fast as it is. The newer and higher end gpu's do suffer more than the older ones of course, and the newer very high end ones may like the pci-3 slot better, but the sample size is too small. But we're still not sending a few billion bits of data thru that connection.

To add to Mikey's comment, my own experience is that 4X does not produce a noticeable difference on mid- to upper-mid-level GPUs (e.g., GTX 660 Ti) compared to 16X and 8X regardless of whether it is PCIe 3.0 or 2.0 when crunching any of the BOINC PrimeGrid projects (note that this may not be the case with some of the PRPnet GPU work...I need to do some testing with WSS and WFS when I get a chance).
