In roughly two weeks, we will send out the last of the n=20 tasks. It will, of course, take a little while before all the n=20 tasks are crunched, and since some will timeout or produce errors, the server will occasionally resend an n=20 task after that. But for the most part, the last n=20 task will be sent out within about two weeks.

We're going to take a short pause before continuing with n=21. In order, these are our plans for GFN-Short:

A) We're putting the short back in GFN-Short!

We're going to crunch the entire n=17 range. Parts have been searched independently before, but there's been no organized, public search of n=17. Excluding any known primes in n=17, we're going to search the entire b-range for n=17. There's a possibility we may get some residues from some single pass work. If we do, those candidates will be double checked against the residues. Everything else will get the full double pass crunching.

I expect it to take slightly less than one month to do all of n=17. These tasks are much shorter than the n=20 tasks. On my computer, they take less than 8 minutes on the GPU and less than 25 minutes on the CPU.

B) All PRPNet n=18 results will be double checked

N=18 and n=19 were, in large part, crunched on GPUs. The good news is that GPUs are much faster (especially before the advent of AVX), but the bad news is that they're a LOT more prone to computation errors. Since PRPNet tasks aren't double checked, we'll take this opportunity to double check the n=18 PRPNet tasks below the GPU and x64 b limits. We did a portion of n=18 on BOINC, and those candidates are already double checked.

I expect that the n=18 double check will also take about a month to complete.

C) All PRPNet n=19 results will be double checked

We'll do the same thing with n=19 as with n=18. The tasks are a lot longer, but there aren't that many of them to be double checked. Most of n=19 was crunched on BOINC, so only candidates below b=110K need to be double checked.

This too should take about a month to complete. The tasks are longer, but there's a lot fewer to check.

D) We will begin n=21

Our plans for testing n=21 are rather nebulous at this point beyond "n=21 is next". No decisions on deadlines or whether this will be a GPU only or GPU plus CPU project have yet been made.

Deadlines

The n=17 tasks will have a 4 day deadline, as these will be among the shortest tasks we offer on BOINC. (Four days is now the minimum deadline for any BOINC subproject. This allows computers without permanent Internet connections to get enough work for a four day weekend without running dry.)

N=18 and n=19 will have deadlines somewhere between 4 days and the 19 days used for n=20.

N=21's deadline hasn't been decided yet.

When these tasks are finished, I think that PrimeGrid should publish an updated version of Harvey Dubner's paper http://fishmech.net/My%20Documents/Harvey/Papers/Generalized%20Fermat%20Primes.doc.

Thirty years later, table 1 is extended to n = 20 tested up to 700000 and table 2 is filled with eleven megaprimes: an important milestone!

Thanks for the link - I had not seen that particular paper before. Of course, I was aware of the update you published with Harvey http://www.ams.org/journals/mcom/2002-71-238/S0025-5718-01-01350-3/S0025-5718-01-01350-3.pdf.

I guess you are also aware of the subsequent update from a few years ago http://dx.doi.org/10.1007/978-3-642-55224-3_11?

I have the same table at my page http://jeppesn.dk/generalized-fermat.html, at the bottom. Will be nice to know if there are "holes" (missed primes) in the n=17 sequence, for example. /JeppeSN

We're now on the last vestiges of the n=20 tasks. The final n=20 work unit was created last night, and we're now running down the queue of ready-to-send n=20 tasks. That queue holds a few days worth of tasks, so it may be a few days until the short n=17 tasks start going out.

Because some of the longer n=20 tasks will undoubtedly fail and need to be resent by the server, even once we've starting crunching the n=17 tasks it will still be possible to get one of the n=20s. It will probably be few months until the very last n=20 is finished.

Did my first n=17 WU, 1276^131072+1 in 0:02:56.
Guess this is going to play havoc with the Fastest GPU stats for a while.

For all intents and purposes we're now done with n=20 and the vast majority of tasks being sent out are the short n=17 tasks. We'll still see the occasional n=20 until the last of them validates.

Can't even think about that until n=20 is completely done -- and that probably won't happen until AFTER n=17 is also exhausted. Then we'll be waiting for BOTH 20 and 17 to finish before we can re-enable CUDA.

I expect we'll have to wait until 17, 18, 19, and 20 are all completely done before we can turn it back on. CUDA's not being actively developed, while OCL is, so the OCL app is faster on nearly all GPUs. CUDA has some advantages, but it's heading in the direction of obsolescence.

With the short tasks, is it possible to re-enable CUDA?

Can't even think about that until n=20 is completely done -- and that probably won't happen until AFTER n=17 is also exhausted. Then we'll be waiting for BOTH 20 and 17 to finish before we can re-enable CUDA.

I expect we'll have to wait until 17, 18, 19, and 20 are all completely done before we can turn it back on. CUDA's not being actively developed, while OCL is, so the OCL app is faster on nearly all GPUs. CUDA has some advantages, but it's heading in the direction of obsolescence.

Okay, that makes sense. I have to drop a CPU core in order to use the ocl version, because it uses a full core and raises the temp too high. With cuda, gfn doesn't use a entire core.

Leading edge already past 106,000.
Largest found seems to be 1372930^131072+1 by Heuer in 2003.

An observation: N-17 Genefer on a nVidia Maxwell GPU are affected by amount of MB PCIe 2.0/3.0 BUS lanes in use. GTX970 Genefer performance below 3million digits drop a noteworthy 30% while >3mil digits show a minimal difference. I have tested x8 vs x4 bus on a GTX970 to confirm why my GPU usage was only 76% core and 69% BUS with x4 rather than 97% core with 40% x8 usage. GTX970 per step N-17 Runtimes are (188us/259us) 27.5% slower on x4 rather than x8/x16. Note: 970 PPS sieve runtimes are the same for x4 or x8. POEM@home GPU tasks are also the same for x4 or x8 while GPUGRID runtimes increase 20% on x4 compared to x8 with a GTX970.

These new short genefer wu-s are really short, like under 4 minutes. The previous ones were about 5 hours. Running on 7970ghz editions oc-d to 1,1ghz.
I have a lot of wu-s in my cache right about now.
I thought my boinc manager has gone crazy, then looking at the wu runtimes, i was worried that my rig has gone crazy, lyckily all is ok, the wu-s are simply shorter.
Note to self: need to check project news more often, lol.

I am interested to know what b-level we plan searching GFN n=17 till?

1,300,000

Leading edge already passed 1,1M so we are considerably closing on our b-level target for this n.

Indeed, we have about 3 days worth of n=17 work left, then we'll be switching over to n=18 double checking.

Speaking of n=18, I'm planning on keeping the same 4 day deadline for n=18. My (admittedly fast) computer can do n=18 on the CPU with the default transform in less than 8 hours. Using the normal Haswell FMA3 transform it takes less than two hours, and on my GPU it takes about half an hour. Even allowing for much older and slower computers, and the speed penalty from multi-core memory contention, 4 days seems like more than enough time for most computers.

Is anyone going to have a problem with keeping the 4 day deadline? Expect each n=18 task to take four times as long as a typical n=17 task.

Shouldn't think it will be a problem for any of my systems.

My guess is that few if any systems will have problems, although people who keep work queues might need to watch out -- the change in length may throw that off.

As we transition from super-efficient n=17 to n=18, we could see BOINC clients getting over-optimistic and reserving more work than can be done in 4-days (say, with a 3-day cache). I would say 6-7 days would be the better setting.

I'm not worried about that. If that happens (it shouldn't, but we know it will in some cases), the extra results will simply be aborted automatically (or aborted by the user if they're paying attention.) In any event, longer deadlines won't prevent that from occurring.

The way BONC works, if the BOINC client is currently accurately estimating the time on the 17s, it should also estimate the 18s accurately. The fpops estimates in all GFN tasks are consistent, so BOINC is going to download exactly the same amount of 18 work (as measured in hours) as it has been doing with the 17s. If it's not been over-downloading before, that won't change with the 18s. If it has been over-downloading, that won't change either.

n=17 can fit 4 FFTs in 4MB (1MB a piece), which fits nicely within the 6MB L3 cache of i5. n=18 will double that to 8MB which will cause some non-linear scaling effects. How bad it will be, I do not know.

When the transition happens, there will be some misestimates, and BOINC will download too much tasks (until it crunches thru some of the n=18 tasks and adjusts the DCF accordingly). I am looking at a scenario where people have 3-day cache (to work over the weekend), and because of this overestimate, they have 5-days of real work (pulled that number out of my ... ), causing aborts and "high priority" stuff and generally pissed off users.

Like you said, it is not really a big deal, since sooner rather than later, things will be back to normal. But on the other hand, if it is not really hard to manage, a more generous deadline will avoid this situation altogether, since, even with the overestimate (in the above scenario), the tasks downloaded can be done within the deadline (and the situation will improve as soon as BOINC crunches thru it's first n=18 task).

Noted. However I'm going to stick with 4 days, which is more than enough for such short tasks. (If it weren't for the "long weekend" concern, the deadline for several tasks would be shorter than 4 days.)

Just wing it. They'll soon get recycled anyway, even quickwr if kept to 4 days.

If it weren't for the "long weekend" concern, the deadline for several tasks would be shorter than 4 days.

14th of July is the National Day of France. July 11-12-13-14 is a long weekend in France!

Starting to get some of the new tasks (I think) but they are only taking twice as long as the 17's at the moment unless the 17's just doubled in size.

Those are the new tasks, but the b values are very low, so these tasks are somewhat shorter than the majority of the n=18 tasks.

We're now crunching GFN n=18. They're taking my HD7970 about 20 mins vs 5mins for GFN n=17.
Smallest b I got was 274^262144+1, largest so far is 75854^262144+1.
What b level are we searching GFN n=18 to?

1060K

And we'll do n=19 up to 895K.

Note that both have significant portions that were already done on BOINC, especially n=19. So we're not doing the entire ranges.

maxErr exceeded for 715656^1048576+1, 0.4531 > 0.4500

Tasks by other users on the same WU:

johnk1970:
Running on platform 'NVIDIA CUDA', device 'GeForce GTX 660', version 'OpenCL 1.1 CUDA' and driver '304.125'.
715656^1048576+1 is complete. (6139103 digits) (err = 0.3955) (time = 12:32:12) 11:03:12

715656^1048576+1 is complete. (6139103 digits) (err = 0.3281) (time = 35:46:53) 16:46:55

Interesting that two GTX 660 cards are giving different values for maxErr. Maybe newer driver is sacrificing accuracy for speed.

There are QTY 24 n=20 WU's still in progress. Oldest:

I did a spot check of those 24 remaining tasks and none of the ones I checked (about 6, including both the oldest and the newest) had lots of tasks that hit maxerr like your example. I don't think there's a systemic problem there, specifically, I don't think any of those are too close to the b limit to complete under OCL.

Genefer v3.07 (OCLcudaGFN) is having errors - example - work unit 636534404 on computer 486933. Seems to NOT be a random problem - or maybe only THAT configuration. ?

(Question moved here from another thread.)

If that's your computer, please unhide your computers to make it easier to examine the data.

If it's not your computer, that's just a single error and isn't indicative of the app having troubles.

If that one computer is repeatedly getting that error, then it's likely something is misconfigured on the computer. Getting GPU apps to work can sometimes be tricky since there's a lot of seemingly unrelated things that can also be running on a computer that will prevent GPU apps from working.

There's about a zillion things you can do to make a GPU task fail because getting them to run requires a lot of things to work correctly and there's a very large number of things you can do that will inhibit a program from being able to access the GPU. Therefore, this kind of error, where the app never even starts running, is quite common with any sort of GPU application.

This error is nothing to be alarmed about unless it's your computer having the trouble and you can't figure out how to fix it.

I noticed it is computer 486933 getting "Error while computing" while on the "Genefer v3.07 (OCLcudaGFN)" tasks with an "NVIDIA GeForce GTX 480 (1535MB) driver: 34411" GFU, but it has NO problems on the "PPS (Sieve) v1.39 (cudaPPSsieve)" tasks... user Anonymous.
I did unhide my computers, if that helps. And I use a "CAL ATI Radeon HD 5800/5900 series (Cypress/Hemlock) (1024MB) driver: 1.4.1848" GFU that has no problems here at PrimeGrid.

As Michael has stated, there could be any number of reasons why that particular user is generating errors on their GTX 480 card.

In the past week my GPUs have processed over 1000 Genefer short tasks that have been validated. I do occasionally get an error with the GFN-short or GFN World Record tasks, though. Sometimes I'll have a GeForce driver crash and automatic recovery which may or may not cause a problem for the GFN task if it has a bad checkpoint file. Or it could be a problem with the checkpoint file if I have a system crash in Windows. It's pretty rare for me, but stuff happens.

There are a lot of PrimeGrid members who have hundreds of continuous errors in GFN tasks, sometimes due to hardware issues such as graphics cards not capable of double-precision, overheating cards, or other system setup issues. They never check to see what the problem might be, so their machines just constantly churn out error after error. This causes no real problems since most errors of this nature occur within seconds and the work unit is 'recycled' and sent out to another machine.

I don't think there's any current problem with the Genefer v3.07 app.

What is the percentige of such cases.
(even with 7 day deadline, there would be still some cases like this).

How many WUs left for n=18 at the moment?
Would it mean to purge and generate new WUs for n=18?

The only GPUs I have had any success running any GFN tasks on have been tahiti-based radeons. All my attempts at getting GFN to run on nvidia cards have failed (with a compute error similar to the below), including multiple 680s, 640s, and a 980. They are relegated to sieving (which they are comparitevely better at anyway).

Sorry, I've never run NVIDIA cards on a linux box so I won't be of any help troubleshooting.

Are we doing triple checks because of the 4 day deadline?
http://www.primegrid.com/workunit.php?wuid=439846681
http://www.primegrid.com/workunit.php?wuid=439866111
I suggest we move to 7 day deadline at this point.

Look at the run times. It took less than 4 hours (not days) for that computer to run the task.

The problem is the way BOINC schedules the execution of the tasks, not the length of the deadline. Increasing the deadline won't help.

What are the exact b ranges that are being searched in the current phase (n=18, GFN262144)? When I look at the finds at this exponent so far:

PRPNet, 2011: b=40734,145310,361658 BOINC, 2012: b=525094,676754 PRPNet, 2012: b=773620

it looks like there was a PRPNet range in 2011, then a BOINC range in early 2012, and finally a new PRPNet range in 2012 (has that run uninterrupted until today's status?).

As I understand it, the old BOINC range(s) need not be double checked now? So what is that range(s) exactly?

When we look at the BOINC Genefer statistics page, it appears that we see the "sum" of the old (2012) BOINC stats and the stats from the current GFN-Short n=18 phase.

Although it's possible to look through the data and answer your question to some degree, that's not the way we've approached this. We're not doing "ranges".

Each number is treated individually, and depending on the existing result/residues we have for that particular candidate, we're either doing two tests on it, one test on it, or no tests on it. Simply put, we're doing everything from b=2 to b=1060K, except for work we can prove was already done.

That's the best answer I have for you without spending a lot of time analyzing the data.

I note all the n=17 WUs have now completed.
Eleven n=20 WUs still remain and leading edge for n=18 now up to b=396,518 (37% of 1060k).

Oldest n=20 WU currently 1 for 2 with maxErr:
- serge: maxErr exceeded for 713348^1048576+1, 0.5000 > 0.4500
- Scott Brown: 713348^1048576+1 is complete. (6137632 digits) (err = 0.4063) (time = 9:59:24) 14:19:47

The leading edge for n=18 now passed 750k milestone.

n=18 was done up to 750k on BOINC (early 2012).

The range on BOINC was already double checked and continued on PRPNet, IIRC.
You may notice that current range is a double check to PRPNet so there is no waiting for wingman (nor pending credit).

It's time to start thinking about moving on to the n=19 (524288) double checking.

I'm thinking of somewhere around a 10 day deadline. Here's some data on run times:

+---------+----------+-------------------+--------------------+-------------------+ | n | count(*) | min(elapsed_time) | avg(elapsed_time) | max(elapsed_time) | +---------+----------+-------------------+--------------------+-------------------+ | 131072 | 17403 | 196.014345 | 2513.0343622472515 | 32333.770779 | | 262144 | 118101 | 277.140966 | 7661.298095008007 | 258608.584851 | | 1048576 | 173 | 16704.052458 | 325930.63374272856 | 1720007.15355 | | 4194304 | 915 | 168326.42746 | 487158.38946889114 | 3331908.578957 | +---------+----------+-------------------+--------------------+-------------------+

Times are in seconds, and note that these numbers don't include work that's been purged from the database. As such, the 131072 numbers represent a relatively small portion of the n=17 work. Very little of the n=18 tasks have been purged so far, so the 262144 statistics are fairly complete.

Of interest is that the longest n=18 task took around 3 days to run, so it looks like a 4 day deadline was more than enough. Note that tasks reported after the deadline are included in these numbers, so if there were tasks that took 4+ days we would see that.

Those numbers include all successful tasks, which includes both CPU and GPU tasks.

Comments are welcome!

With regards to the n=18 double checking, there's been about 130 or so tasks from PRPNet that turned out to be wrong so far. About 95 thousand were correct. There's about 25 thousand candidates still in the pipeline.

I'm thinking of somewhere around a 10 day deadline

With 4 day deadline for n=18 and 19 day for n=20, I'm fine with 10 days for n=19.

Can't find what deadline we used back in 2012 when n=19 was first crunched, but I would dare to use even shorter deadline comparing to 2012 because:
- Genefer got a bit faster, CPUs are a bit faster. Even some of my 3-years old (faster) CPUs will finish them in <8 hours, average CPU in about a day.
- Most of n=19 was crunched on BOINC, so only candidates below b=110K need to be double checked. It means we will do lower/faster end of b limit and well into faster transformations.

There are two b ranges in n=19:
18-110K
700K-895K

Any deadlines need to keep both in mind.

n=19 BOINC stats show it was tested up to 699,998. So 700k-895k must have been done on PRPNet. 895k must be the notional GPU b-limit.
n=19 on PRPNet currently past b=920,000. Range above 895k could be double tested on CPU at some point in the future.

I am running a fast GPU with no task buffer so short deadline doesn't worry me. Trouble is people with a buffer of tasks and the wasted resources as the server spawns more Tasks on the same WU once the deadline is reached. Maybe a Notice on BOINC to remove any buffer if running GFN would reduce wasted GPU effort.

Might be good to consider CPUs when setting deadlines, not just GPUs. Late-model good CPUs can finish n=20 tasks in a couple of days (have one now on an i7-4790@3.6GHz which looks like it will take about 43 hours), but older CPUS can take quite a while.

My systems are all either good enough that they can probably meet any deadline, or old enough that I'll just shrug and crunch something else if they can't meet the deadline, but I don't know how much CPU horsepower overall might be affected if the deadline is too short.

That's why I'm thinking about a 10 day deadline rather than a 10 hour deadline. :)

Also, a really bottom of the barrel GPU might perform as poorly as a really old CPU.

FWIW, here are some CPU timings for 1000000^524288+1 with the different transforms:

FMA3: 8:07:33
AVX-Intel: 8:31:23
SSE4: 13:41:49
SSE2: 16:03:20
Default: 32:06:54
x87: 78:34:05

It should be noted that we're only running a 64 bit CPU app on BOINC, and I don't think there are any 64 bit CPUs without at least SSE2, so the slowest transform actually used would be the SSE2 transform.

Certainly, older CPUs running, say, SSE2 will be slower than the machine I did those tests on (an i5-4670K), but with a 240 hour deadline I think even the slowest of 64 bit CPUs should be able to manage.

For completeness. the run time using GeneferOCL on a GTX 580 is 1:53:36.

I should think a 10 day deadline would be fine --just wanted to call out that roger seemed to be assuming that only GPUs need be considered.

Of course, 1000000 is a sixth power. Since x^3 + 1 = (x + 1)(x^2 - x + 1) we have the factorization:

1000000^524288 + 1 = (10^1048576)^3 + 1 = (10^1048576 + 1)(10^2097152 - 10^1048576 + 1)

so this number, GF(19, 1000000)=GF(20, 1000), is trivially composite.

However, I have no reason to believe that the genefer program will treat it specially, so it is fair enough to use it as a benchmark.

The leading edge is now in n=19 candidates range.

Except run time growing to ~4 times what they used to be with n=18 once b is in a bit higher values.

With regards to the n=18 double checking, there's been about 130 or so tasks from PRPNet that turned out to be wrong so far. About 95 thousand were correct. There's about 25 thousand candidates still in the pipeline.

With about 150 tasks pending (as of this writing) what does the final error count look like?

That's currently difficult to determine accurately without a lot of digging (which I'm not going to do at this time). The timing of the post you quoted wasn't coincidental; it was right before the oldest of the completed n=18 double check tasks would begin to be purged from the database. With old tasks now being purged, the statistics I can see are incomplete.

I can currently see 149 wrong residues, but that doesn't include any that have already been purged.

Great thanks :-)

Leading edge for n=19 now up to b=717,860, so we're now double checking the second, 700k-895k, range.
At 7,074 GFN BOINC WUs I am currently 25th on the User list (in terms of number of WUs). Hoping to get to 20th before the smaller WUs run out.

At what b-level is n=21 a World Record? I should answer my own question:
Largest prime ever found is 2^57885161 - 1, i.e. 1st at 17,425,170 digits.

>pfgw64.exe -d -od -q"len(b^(2^21)+1)" -f0

b=100,000: len=10,485,761, i.e. 5th place
b=500,000: len=11,951,607, i.e. 4th place
So I guess we won't make a World Record with n=21.

b_min = ceil(10^(17425170/2^21)) = 203689454

Very unlikely that we'll reach that range before a new World Record prime is found elsewhere. ;)

At what b-level is n=21 a World Record?

Most useful answer is "at an impractically large b'.

The size of the number is proportional to the log of b (we'll use the base 10 log to make things simple). Roughly speaking, with n about 2 million, the current world record is about 18 million (rounding up), so log10(b) needs to be a little less than 9, meaning b will be a 9 digit number. So b needs to be somewhere between 100 million and a billion. (Closer to a billion than 100 million, I think.)

Note that this is all approximations I did in my head; it would take a few seconds with a calculator to get the exact number, but what fun is that? (You can also read that as "It's 3 AM and I did that in my head, so it's probably wrong.")

It's quite a bit beyond the limits of the Genefer algorithm.

Or, looking at it another way, if it was possible to find a world record prime with n=21, we would have been searching n=21 instead of n=22 from the beginning. :)

EDIT: Yup, I was off by one digit. pschoefer's answer is correct.

At what b-level is n=21 a World Record? I should answer my own question:
Largest prime ever found is 2^57885161 - 1, i.e. 1st at 17,425,170 digits.

>pfgw64.exe -d -od -q"len(b^(2^21)+1)" -f0

b=100,000: len=10,485,761, i.e. 5th place
b=500,000: len=11,951,607, i.e. 4th place
So I guess we won't make a World Record with n=21.

b_min = ceil(10^(17425170/2^21)) = 203689454

Entirely correct.

So 203689454 (read 203'689'454) is the minimal b value if you want strictly more decimal figures than the current world record.

If you are happy with a GFN2097152 prime with the same number of decimal figures, but still larger, you get instead:
ceil(2^(57885161/2^21)) = 203689402
It does not look like much of a difference, but it will take a while to eliminate those 26 extra even b values ;-)

Within the next 24 hours or so, the last of the n=19 double check tasks will be sent out and we will move forward with n=21 as the new "short" tasks.

For n=21 looks like some of the range has already been tested:
http://yves.gallot.pagesperso-orange.fr/primes/status.html
Therefore I expect no prime for single digit b.

591 n=19 double check WU's left as I write this.

If the max for n=20 is 720000, the range [2 ; 848] was tested.
But a triple/quadruple check for these important small values is a good thing.

I have also thought (too much) about that. The b range [2 ; 848] for n=21 is really redundant since the same numbers have been done already for n=20. This is under the usual identity which I always state (in more or less generality):

b^(2^21) + 1 = (b^2)^(2^20) + 1

and (848^2) is still less than the 720'000.

However, this assumes that perfect-square b values were not skipped when we ran the n=20 tests. My intuition says this assumption is correct. However, it is a bit hard to see just which b values were skipped.

But let us be happy with the quadruple checking ;-)

After verifying that they were all in fact checked as part of n=20, we went and deleted all b's <= 848. Thanks for the head's up.

The first b to be tested will be 858. (Ignore that the project status page says the minimum is 10. It's not correct.)

For those who are curious, should we be fortunate enough to find a prime at n=21, the numbers are starting in position 10 in the top 5000 list (~6M digits). By the time we get to the OCL and CPU (non-x87) limits it will be around position 4 (~12 million digits), and by the time we get to the OCL3 limit it would be position 2 (~13 million digits).

Is your GPU perhaps OCed and/or overheating? Perhaps that's the cause...

I'm going to run one of those (the first one, which seems to have several failures using both the production OCL app and the newer 3.2.9 app. I'll let you know what I find out.

After verifying that they were all in fact checked as part of n=20, we went and deleted all b's <= 848. Thanks for the head's up.

The first b to be tested will be 858. (Ignore that the project status page says the minimum is 10. It's not correct.)

That is cool. The GFN subproject status page looks good at the time of writing. /JeppeSN

I'm only waiting for the OCL3 to come out before I switch my Gtx 970 back to prime searching, as we already estabilished that it'll be so much faster than the current app. It really doesn't feel like running a slower app when I know something much better is just around the corner. Especially since I'm helping with manual sieve, which can only be done with Nvidia, so.......

And your second task also failed on my system, so it's bad too.

Only a small number of candidates are failing so far, and hopefully it stays that way. I'm going to cancel any workunits with at least 2 tasks that fail will MaxErr exceeded errors. So far there's 5, including one of yours. Your second one has only your error so far.

There's about 2200 524288 workunits outstanding.

Rather than waste a lot of computing time, I've canceled all of the outstanding 524288 tasks. If your computer is crunching one of those, feel free to cancel it. It will have _524288_ in the middle of the result or task name.

We'll re-test these with OCL3 when n=19 is opened up as its own application.

Tasks with names with _2097152_ in the name are the newer n=21 tasks, and those are all fine.

The good side of this little mess is that since no more 524288 tasks will be sent out, I can turn the CUDA app back on. Anyone who prefers CUDA over OCL can now select CUDA for the N=21 tasks.

Rather than waste a lot of computing time, I've canceled all of the outstanding 524288 tasks. If your computer is crunching one of those, feel free to cancel it. It will have _524288_ in the middle of the result or task name.

By the way, if you choose let the task complete, and it does complete successfully, you will get credit for it. Unfortunately, there's no way of predicting whether it will complete or error out other than letting it run to completion. The error can occur anywhere in the calculation.

Tasks with names with _2097152_ in the name are the newer n=21 tasks, and those are all fine.

The tasks with _524288_ in their name ran for between 144,000 to 150,000 seconds (around 40 to 42 hours) on my older AMD Phenom computers running 64 bit Fedora Linux.

Just downloaded a new _2097152_ work unit and it is saying an estimate of 314 Hours. So a big jump in processing time from _524288_ to _2097152_.
It is around the processing times I used to get back a year or two ago when CPUs were running GFN and before GPUs took over.
Back then the GFN were taking almost as long as SoB tasks (both over 300 hours) for me but paid a lot less and didn't have a bonus on them that the SoB tasks did.

It will be a wait to see how these will travel, but I am up for it.

The very first n=21 tasks have been validated:

http://www.primegrid.com/workunit.php?wuid=446267369

Alas, it is not prime.

Note that run times and credit will increase quite quickly as b increases rapidly in magnitude early in the search.

It looks like we're especially in need of sieving for n=65536 and n=131072.

Those of you who have Nvidia GPUs in a Windows computer and don't mind getting your hands a little dirty with running some work manually from the command prompt can help out by doing some manual sieving for those two Ns.

Manual sieving is run from the "Manual Sieving" link on the left side menu, or just click here: Manual Sieving.

Information about manual sieving can be found in this forum topic: http://www.primegrid.com/forum_forum.php?id=22

2.6GHz dual (channel) AVX (Ivy Bridge) core n=21 task runtimes:

    1c = 144hr
    2c = 188hr
    3(ht) = 228hr

When n=22 opens to CPU - are the WU AVX/FMA3 only?
(WR tasks not included) Will Seventeen or Bust give up it's longest running CPU task status to CPU n=21? If yes - around what n=21 'b'?
On said CPU: 2 at a time SOB = 240hr.

No. It will run on any CPU. I'm even releasing the 32 bit versions of the Genefer CPU app. I don't exactly recommend using an ancient 32 bit CPU, however: On my 32 bit AMD Sempron, which doesn't even have sse2, an n=21 task would take about half a year. Even with deadline extensions, that's too long. (We could have a discussion about whether we should allow extensions like that, but I don't think there would be much demand for it. I know I certainly don't want to run a 6 month long task!) A world record task would take about 4 times as long.

I'm waiting for the deadline extension version of Genefer before turning on the WR CPU apps. That allows slower CPUs to participate.

(WR tasks not included) Will Seventeen or Bust give up it's longest running CPU task status to CPU n=21? If yes - around what n=21 'b'?

Starting Proth prime test of 67607*2^31000001+1 Using all-complex FMA3 FFT length 2880K, Pass1=384, Pass2=7680, a = 3 67607*2^31000001+1, bit: 20000 / 31000017 [0.06%]. Time per bit: 14.190 ms.

31000017 * .014190 = 439890 seconds, or 122 hours. So n=21 and SoB are about exactly the same length on my computer.

The WR CPU tasks will, of course, be about 4 times longer:

Testing 50000^4194304+1... Using FMA3 transform The checkpoint doesn't match current test: 50000^4194304+1 != 100000^2097152+1. Current test will be restarted Starting initialization... Initialization complete (16.737 seconds). Estimated time remaining for 50000^4194304+1 is 470:44:35

I've moved a discussion about not getting tasks for a new AMD R9 290X GPU to its own thread: http://www.primegrid.com/forum_thread.php?id=6452
