Welcome to the Saint Nicholas' Challenge

Saint Nicholas is the source of both Santa Claus and "Sinterklaas". In the low countries and some former colonies the tradition of gift giving takes place on his name day (Belgium) or the day before (The Netherlands). As I am Dutch rather than Belgian, I decided to plan this challenge on the correct day (;)), being the day before his actual name day: December 5th.

To celebrate this at PrimeGrid we're offering a 24 hour challenge on Sophie Germain Prime Search (LLR), as we're most likely to hand out primes to the participants.

Sophie Germain was born on April 1, 1776, in Paris, France. She was an extraordinary "French mathematician who made important contributions to the fields of differential geometry and number theory and to the study of Fermat's Last Theorem." (Wiki)

Because of the gender prejudices of the time, her early work was submitted under the pseudonym of M. LeBlanc. Later work was finally submitted under her own name and on 8 January 1816, she became the first woman to win a prize from the Paris Academy of Sciences. While some consider her work lacking in rigor, almost all agree that it was from the lack of a formal education that was denied to her based on her gender.

The modern view generally acknowledges that although Sophie had great talent as a mathematician, her haphazard education had left her without the strong base she needed to truly excel. Louis Bucciarelli and Nancy Dworsky, Germain's biographers, summarize as follows: “All the evidence argues that Sophie Germain had a mathematical brilliance that never reached fruition due to a lack of rigorous training available only to men."(Wiki)

What better way to pay tribute to Sophie Germain than to find a prime with her namesake. Finding a World Record Sophie Germain prime would be incredible and even more amazing if it was found during the Challenge. :) Hey, it's possible. NOTE: A twin prime is also possible in this search because of the quad sieve.

While the Sophie Gemain prime remains elusive, a byproduct of the search are single primes. A fair amount of primes is expected, though most likely not as many as last year as the challenge is only 24 hours rather than 48 and the numbers we are now searching is are larger.
To participate in the Challenge, please select only the Sophie Germain Prime Search (LLR) project in your PrimeGrid preferences section. The challenge will begin 5 December 2014 00:00 UTC and end 6 December 2014 00:00 UTC. Application builds are available for Linux 32 and 64 bit, Windows 32 and 64 bit and MacIntel. These applications will be sent to 64 bit clients. 64 bit cpu's will have a small advantage over 32 bit cpu's. Intel CPUs with AVX capabilities (Sandy Bridge, Ivy Bridge) will have a very large advantage, and Intel CPUs with FMA3 (Haswell) will be the fastest

Note that the starting time is midnight (i.e., the very beginning of December 5th), rather than the usual 18:00:00.

ATTENTION: The primality program LLR is CPU intensive; so, it is vital to have a stable system with good cooling. It does not tolerate "even the slightest of errors." Please see this post for more details on how you can "stress test" your computer. WU's will take ~10 minutes on fast/newer computers and 30+ minutes on slower/older computers. If your computer is highly overclocked, please consider "stress testing" it. Sieving is an excellent alternative for computers that are not able to LLR. :)

Please, please, please make sure your machines are up to the task.

Time zone converter:

The World Clock - Time Zone Converter

NOTE: The countdown clock on the front page uses the host computer time. Therefore, if your computer time is off, so will the countdown clock. For precise timing, use the UTC Time in the data section to the left of the countdown clock.

Scoring Information

Scores will be kept for individuals and teams. Only work units issued AFTER 5 December 2014 00:00 UTC and received BEFORE 6 December 2014 00:00 UTC will be considered for credit. We will be using the same scoring method as we currently use for BOINC credits.
A quorum of 2 is NOT needed to award Challenge score - i.e. no double checker. Therefore, each returned result will earn a Challenge score. Please note that if the result is eventually declared invalid, the score will be removed.

For details on how the score is calculated, please see this thread.

At the Conclusion of the Challenge

We kindly ask users "moving on" to ABORT their WU's instead of DETACHING, RESETTING, or PAUSING.

ABORTING WU's allows them to be recycled immediately; thus a much faster "clean up" to the end of an LLR Challenge. DETACHING, RESETTING, and PAUSING WU's causes them to remain in limbo until they EXPIRE. Therefore, we must wait until WU's expire to send them out to be completed.

Please consider either completing what's in the queue or ABORTING them. Thank you. :)

About the Sophie Germain Prime Search

A prime number p is called a Sophie Germain prime if 2p + 1 is also prime. For example, 5 is a Sophie Germain prime because it is prime and 2 × 5 + 1 = 11, is also prime. These numbers are named after Marie-Sophie Germain, an extraordinary "French mathematician who made important contributions to the fields of differential geometry and number theory and to the study of Fermat's Last Theorem." (Wiki)

We'll be searching the form k*2^n-1. If it is prime, then we'll check k*2^n+1, k*2^(n-1)-1, & k*2^(n+1)-1. We are able to do this because a quad sieve was performed for this search. This sieve ensured that k*2^n-1, k*2^n+1, k*2^(n-1)-1, & k*2^(n+1)-1 did not have any small prime divisors. The opportunity to find SG's and Twins in the same sieve file is appealing. However, we "expect" to find a Sophie Germain prime first.

The average time currently spent on testing a SGS Prime across PrimeGrid is 45 minutes. An I2500 with AVX takes about 15 minutes.

What is LLR?

The Lucas-Lehmer-Riesel (LLR) test is a primality test for numbers of the form N = k*2^n − 1, with 2^n > k. Also, LLR is a program developed by Jean Penne that can run the LLR-tests. It includes the Proth test to perform +1 tests and PRP to test non base 2 numbers. See also:

In Belgium, we celebrate "Sinterklaas" on the 6th of December. I don't know why the Dutch celebrate him on the 5th, as Nicholas of Myra died on 6 December 342. To me it is rather evident we Belgians are celebrating on the correct day.

Een beetje chauvinistisch, Charley?

Totally chauvinistic :)

The Dutch celebrate it on December 5th on account of "pakjesavond" (errr.... evening of gifts?). The adults generally do something like secret santa, though with elaborately crafted gifts on the eve of December 5th. The children put their shoes next to the fireplace* that evening. That night, Sinterklaas and Zwarte Piet visit through the chimney** (like Santa) to put gifts in their shoes. When the next morning comes, the children find their gifts and too much sugar and of course get completel sick from all the candy and ignore the rest of the gifts on that account :P ;)

*Or something similar
**Or backdoor*** when there's no chimney of course
***Or frontdoor when there's no backdoor :P

Reading your description, we do exactly the same thing, on the same day. On the eve of the 5th, Sinterklaas en Zwarte* Piet put presents in or next to the shoes of the children. For the children, the feast is on the morning of the 6th.

That approximate average time (cpu dependent) is given in minutes and seconds, not hours. You can breathe a sigh of relief. ;)

If the current Recent average CPU time: 31:26 is more than 24 hours will each Task that starts at midnight count if it takes 32 hours?
Or is this 31:26 minutes?

Minutes.

I've changed the display to remove this ambiguity. If the average time is less than an hour, it will now display as 0:31:26.

There is no point trying to download now, you have to wait until AFTER the start time of the challenge. Otherwise your units will not be eligible for challenge points.

Trying to download some units to be able to join the challenge, but have no luck so far. "None available."

Depending on which queue you look at, there's either 1,000 tasks available (this gets refilled every second), fifty thousand available (this gets refilled every minute), or 1.1 million (we refill these manually). The server has plenty of tasks available.

As Dave said, you absolutely do not want to download tasks early because those will not count for the challenge. Only tasks that are downloaded after the challenge starts and returned before the challenge ends will count.

Of course, we still need to find out why you're not getting any tasks because you certainly will need to download them once the challenge starts.

The most common reason for not being able to download is that you have other PrimeGrid tasks suspended. A typical scenario is that you might have some longer PrimeGrid tasks running, so you suspend them so you can download the challenge tasks.

Unfortunately, BOINC doesn't work like that, and once you suspend the long tasks, BOINC will refuse to ask the PrimeGrid server for any more work. There's nothing we can do about this. It's a "feature" of BOINC we have no control over.

If (like me) you didn't plan ahead and make sure your computer wasn't in the middle of some long tasks, there is a procedure you can use for the challenge without having to resort to aborting the long tasks:

0) Do NOT suspend the existing tasks, (you should resume them if they're already suspended.)

1) Change your preferences to SGS.

2) Figure out how much longer your current tasks will take to complete. In my case, they'll end 2 days after the challenge starts. Let's call this time X (so X is 2 days in my case.)

3) Once the challenge starts, change your BOINC preferences to X + 1 day (3 days for me.) This setting is found in your BOINC manager, under "Tools" --> "Computing Preferences". It's on the second tab ("network usage", and is called "Minimum work buffer". Once the challenge starts, I'll sett this to 3.00. Since the computer will already have 2 days worth of work, setting the minimum work buffer to 3.00 will cause it to request another day's worth of work, and the server will send SGS tasks in response.

4) After 24 hours worth of SGS work is loaded -- and only after the SGS work is loaded -- you can suspend the pre-existing long tasks. At this point, the SGS tasks will start to run. BOINC won't download anything else because of the suspend task(s), but you already have enough SGS for the challenge so that's okay.

(This actually won't completely work since at the start of the challenge I configure the server to only download a small amount of work to each computer. This insures that all computers get at least some work the first time they connect to the server. Unless you have a very slow computer, you probably won't be able to download a full day's worth of work at the beginning of the challenge. This procedure will therefore need to be repeated later after I raise the limit.)

If that's not what's happening on your computer, or if, for any reason, you're still unable to download work, please post the applicable portion of your BOINC log and we will help.

Your cache ideally needs to be empty via clicking No New Tasks button on Project tab of BOINC Manager to let the current tasks drain away. When the start time passes, immediately click the same button which now says Allow New Tasks, then Update to get fresh work.

Correct. At least for most of Florida. The western part of the the Florida panhandle is in the central time zone where the start time is 6 PM.

Looks like a lot of people are getting an early start on SGS before the challenge. There have already been 6 primes (ordinary primes, not SGS pairs) found today. On a normal day SGS finds only 1 or 2 primes (and much closer to 1 than 2).

I think I'm the lucky finder of 2 of them.

Unable to be online at midnight, I prefer to start crunching short tasks like SGS earlier, with a 0 buffer. Then worst that can happen is the a late start of no more than 15 minutes (the average time it takes to complete a SGS WU on my cpus).
I have 5 previous SGS primes, but all as double checker. I hope to be the primefinder on at least one of the 2.

Anyway, good luck to all who will be participating in the challenge.

I do the same thing -- can't count on being available at 00:00 GMT (that's 18:00 local, so if I'm late getting off of work, I'll miss it), so just switch to SGS a day in advance and let them run. If I get home in time, I'll stop work fetch until the challenge starts.

For 18:00 UTC starts, I'm at work then, so I switch to a short subproject in advance, then use a minute of my lunch break to change preferences.

I got one of the six primes because of this.

Now to find more during the challenge.

Interesting start to the challenge.

The very beginning was rather uninteresting, until I "opened up the floodgates" and took off the task restrictions.

During a challenge start, I set the task limits to 8 tasks per core (total) and 2 tasks per core (in each work request). That insures that one or two massive server-type computers (which can have over a hundred cores) don't grab all the challenge tasks in memory before the "feeder" task can replenish them. The feeder goes to sleep for 1 second when it has no work to do, so if a few big hosts can manage to grab everything in less than one second, it's possible that the next host that asks for work might get a "no work" response. There would be more work available in less than one second, but I want to avoid that during a challenge.

So, at the beginning, I set the task limits to 8 and 2.

Once things look like they're quieting down, I set the limits back to normal, which is 320 and 8. (320 tasks per core total and 8 tasks per core in each work request).

When I set the limits to 320/8, it was like I opened up a firehose of SGS tasks! Tasks started going out at a rate of over 10 thousand a minute (that's close to 200 per second). As I write this, some 50 minutes into the challenge, over 98 thousand tasks have been sent out. We normally do 20 to 25 thousand in a day.

Most of those tasks have not been returned yet, of course. 3600 have been returned, and half of those have been validated.

So far, there have been two un-verified primes returned during the challenge. The "un-verified" part is important because with SGS, hardware failures (think "excessive overclocking") often result in false prime indications. With SGS we really do need to wait for the wingman to be sure.

With that caveat out of the way, Usucapio Libertatis, in addition to his two earlier primes, has one of those two new primes. BUT... it was sent out at 23:50, so technically it doesn't count as a challenge prime.

The second one was found by phaeton57, and, if verified, will be the first challenge prime of the challenge.

I'm a newb to BOINC and PG, but I determined that this challenge might be interesting. My WUs are currently averaging 40-45 minutes to complete and I'm wondering if there is anything else I can do to speed up computation before I go to bed for the night.

My laptop is an ASUS N56V that is 2 years old. It is unmodified and my "daily driver" that I very much don't want to replace any time soon, so I'm not going to do anything that places the machine at exceptional risk. I have the machine elevated above the desk and a small personal sized fan blowing across the air intakes.

Specs are:
Intel Core i7-3630QM @ 2.40GHz
NVIDIA GeForce GT 635M with 2GB RAM
8GB RAM
1TB 5400rpm HDD
Windows 8.1 Pro with Media Center

I have all my BOINC resources (10000) currently dedicated to PG and my computing preferences set to use 100% of 3 processors for 100% of CPU time on a multi-core system through BAM!

I am guessing that once I close everything (except BOINC) out for the night, I'll see a slight speed improvement, but is there anything else I can do?

Thanks

If you normally use a hibernation mode to conserve battery power during periods of non-use, temporarily disable this feature. I've never used hibernation, so I don't know if it is automatically disabled when crunching tasks. It doesn't matter if the monitor blanks or not - it has no significant bearing on this PrimeGrid LLR app. Before you turn in for the night, take one last look at your laptop to make sure everything is crunching smoothly.

I never use a hibernation mode and stopped letting my computer sleep when I started BOINC. I also remove the battery and run off A/C power only.

Does the "On a multi-core system, use at most" number of processors setting on the BAM! Work preferences make much of a difference? I had it set the to the default of 2, but upped it to 3 for this challenge. I was assuming that I had 4 total processors because I'm using a quad-core processor, but BOINC reports the CPU as having 8 processors. I am hesitant to mess with this setting to much for fear of damaging or de-stabilizing my system due to lack of lack of adequate knowledge.

You have a quad core processor with hyperthreading. The hyperthreading makes each core look like 2 cores to the Operating System, so Windows (and BOINC) sees 8 total cores.

Sometimes you get better performance by using all 8 hyperthreads, sometimes you get better performance by only using 4 threads (the "full" cores). With LLR applications, you're usually better off running on only the physical cores, so on your computer that means setting it to use no more than 4 cores. With our sieve applications, however, you get better performance when using hyperthreading, so you can set it as high as 8.

To keep the temperatures down when running LLR, running only 3 cores (rather than all 4 real cores) is a good idea. LLR makes extensive use of AVX instructions which use a lot of power and produce a lot of heat. Chances are the heat produced running the LLR app exceeds that of anything else you can run on your computer.

If you typically only use 2 cores for BOINC, I wouldn't use more cores at PrimeGrid. Our apps are generally more stressful for computers than other projects'. If you're trying to protect the computer, PrimeGrid (and especially LLR) isn't the place to go "all in".

Based on what I saw on the BOINC documentation, it seems that setting in BAM! is a legacy setting for versions prior to v6.1 after which it is expressed as a % vice a # of cores. Since I've left most settings at the default, the default % of cores is 100% for BOINC, so I'm not sure that I have the type of control you discuss. I'm using the current release of BOINC v7.4.27 dtd 11Nov14 and BAM! with no additional software/applications to monitor/tweak my CPU/GPU.

For the purposes of this challenge, should I modify the % of processors setting? Should I set it to 50%? Would that make PG use the full cores? I'll check first thing in the morning for the answer.

I'm not looking to set BOINC records. I know I don't have a powerful enough machine and I really just think this DC stuff is pretty cool and am happy to help. I might open a seperate thread to discuss optimizing my setup for general, but relatively low-risk PG computing.

Thanks

Yes, you should get better performance with it set to 50%. I'd estimate that these tasks will take about 20 minutes, more or less, if you use 50%. You'll be running half as many tasks simultaneously, but they should run slightly faster than twice as fast.

Well, I never did get around to buying that 2400 speed memory upgrade, but with the small-ish (comparatively) SGS units, that probably isn't as critical as with the bigger tests. Every little bit helps, of course, and I'll be sure to put a memory upgrade for my IB on my xmas wish-list for Santa.

I'm another one who got a "running start" on SGS ahead of the challenge with minimal cache, as I'm at work at midnight GMT. Sadly no primes for me recently, challenge or otherwise.
Cheers to all.

We're halfway through this one day challenge and it's already time for the usual end of challenge reminder:

At the Conclusion of the Challenge

We would prefer users "moving on" to finish those tasks they have downloaded, if not then please ABORT the WU's instead of DETACHING, RESETTING, or PAUSING.

ABORTING WU's allows them to be recycled immediately; thus a much faster "clean up" to the end of a Challenge. DETACHING, RESETTING, and PAUSING WU's causes them to remain in limbo until they EXPIRE. Therefore, we must wait until WU's expire to send them out to be completed.

Status Update:

Challenge: Saint Nicholas'
App: (SGS-LLR)
(As of 2014-12-05 18:27:42 UTC)

428444 tasks have been sent out. [CPU/GPU/anonymous_platform: 428120 (100%) / 0 (0%) / 324 (0%)]

Of those tasks that have been sent out:

9194 (2%) came back with some kind of an error. [9194 (2%) / 0 (0%) / 0 (0%)]
225921 (53%) have returned a successful result. [225659 (53%) / 0 (0%) / 269 (0%)]
193335 (45%) are still in progress. [193285 (45%) / 0 (0%) / 55 (0%)]

Of the tasks that have been returned successfully:

51626 (23%) are pending validation. [51596 (23%) / 0 (0%) / 37 (0%)]
174180 (77%) have been successfully validated. [173948 (77%) / 0 (0%) / 232 (0%)]
24 (0%) were invalid. [24 (0%) / 0 (0%) / 0 (0%)]
91 (0%) are inconclusive. [91 (0%) / 0 (0%) / 0 (0%)]

The current leading edge (i.e., latest work unit for which work has actually been sent out to a host) is k=1663662974025. The leading edge was at k=1638910172937 at the beginning of the challenge. Since the challenge started, the leading edge has advanced 1.51% as much as it had prior to the challenge!

After three quarters of a day, about 10 times the normal number of daily tasks have been returned, and almost about the same number are still in progress. Considering SGS has very heavy participation to begin with, this has been a great challenge so far!

We've also found quite a few primes. We normally find SGS primes ar a rate of slightly more than one per day. In the first 18 hours of the challenge, we've tentatively found 13 primes. Five have been confirmed so far, and this includes one prime that was sent out prior to the challenge but received during the challenge. Well done and congratulations to all the prime finders.

Six more hours to go!

Shucks. I was hoping to get into the scoring range running one (admittedly pretty new, quad-core) computer, but I bubbled out in 305th place.

The competition was definitely stiffer this time. Most of the year I've been able to get into about 100th to 110th place with my Haswell, but I'm in 148th right now. This computer isn't getting any slower, so everyone else's must be getting faster. :)

FYI, on a Core i3, with 2 physical cores, I'd recommend running at 50% and run just two tasks simultaneously. With hyperthreading, you usually see better overall performance by only running one task per physical core and leaving the second hyperthread idle. You'll be running half as many tasks simultaneously, but they should run slightly better than twice as fast as when you run 4 at once. Usually. You need to actually test it and see which is better, but the rule of thumb is that for LLR or Genefer, don't use hyperthreading and run on only half of the threads, but with sieves you should use hyperthreading and let all the threads crunch.

I didn't even know that I was hyperthreading, but that does explain why my tasks seemed to be running a little slower during the challenge than usual and seemed to be slowing over the length of the challenge. I generally have it set to use 3 of 4 processors to make sure I have good performance for actual computer use, but during the challenge, I went "full throttle".

Michael,
You were doing the Primes during the challenge, how about also including that information in the clean up? I know it's probably a script that runs, but the information is neat to see.

I was planning on doing that once all of them are verified. At this point, there's 17 primes, at least one of which is a "semi-challenge" prime that was sent before the challenge but returned during the challenge. 15 are verified so far.

Furthermore, following the challenge, a lot of SGS tasks were returned, and although they don't count as part of the challenge, a substantial number of primes have been returned since the challenge ended. Remember, we normally see about one each day, and we already have 7 during the first twelve hours of December 6th. Three of those have been verified. Assuming they're all verified, that's 17 primes during the challenge and 7 more in the half day following the challenge, for a total of 24 so far.
