Some of you may have noticed Apple released the new version of OS X a few days ago codenamed 'Yosemite'. I had just upgraded from the previous version 'Mavericks' and all seemed to go smoothly barring needing to reinstall BOINC to repair some permission problems (might have been due to some files I left in the BOINC dir when messing about with app_info.xml). In any case all is working now and it picked straight up crunching where I left off.

Will upgrade my GPU box later in the week and hope for no issues with OpenCL support.

If anyone has other opinions or observations please post, but for now it looks to be a painless upgrade!

Cheers

- Iain

I needed to reinstall BOINC too (and I hadn't "messed about with app_info.xml"). So I'm guessing everyone who upgrades has to do that.
Aside from that it was a smooth transfer.

I upgraded my other machine, which has two ATI GPUs, and apart from having to reinstall BOINC, it's crunching again without problems.

NOT painless.

I updated to OS X "Yosemite" yesterday. The first pain is that the download is something like 6 gig and my internet connection isn't all that great (but that's on me). I also had to do the "reinstall boinc" thing afterwards to get any of it running. That seemed to go OK.

But, now I'm back to "GPU missing" state. This happened before when I first went to Mavericks, and persisted for months, until an update was available (I forget if it was just a cuda driver update or an OS update). I've attempted to update the cuda driver but there's nothing new available via the normal "system preferences" channel.

CPU boinc work is running normally. I'll report back regarding opencl on prpnet later.

Note this is a macbook air, and about 3 years old (nvidia 320M). Last time, newer boxes did not have this problem, so may not with this update either.

If the "Missing GPU" is for CUDA tasks, you need the current Alpha BOINC (>7.4.19) and latest CUDA (>6.5.14) to detect the CUDA.

This is because older CUDA hasn't been signed correctly by nvidia, so apple wont let it load, and then because new CUDA is 64-bit, so you need 64-but BOINC client to detect the library.

Problem three is project specific - for a science app to detect the 64-but CUDA... it needs to be 64-bit itself. AFAIK no project is currently compiling Mac CUDA apps as 64-bit, as 32-bit has been good enough and gives greater compatibility.

I can report that wwwwcl (openCL) jobs are running fine in prpnet with OS X Yosemite.

Thanks Andrew for those tips. I'll try them out, but probably won't have time until this weekend.

I've yet to upgrade either of my Macs, and I'm not sure if my parents have done so with their Macs either. I'm not even sure I can, given I brilliantly used a 64GB SSD for the OS on my primary machine...and it's full. The 11" Air my mom uses is in a similar boat, and my 13" has about 2GB free, maybe. Oops.

It's good to know everything still works, though. Historically, I've always had to re-install BOINC after doing an IPU on any Mac, from Leopard onwards. It's the only program to have its permissions messed up during such a transition. My guess is it's due to the highly-specific requirements of the BOINC master, which in turn probably translates to what is essentially a system-specific install. If certain signatures change around it, it'll freak out. That's my understanding of it, though. BOINC requires low-level access not required of most (non-system) OS X programs; the other programs which require such permissions will typically ask at either opening the program or before executing a task that needs elevated permissions.

Of course, none of this explains why I've never had a single issue with upgrading various Linux distros on machines that run BOINC. I tend to think way too hard about this stuff, anyway.

Either way, I'm gonna make sure I clone the entire drive before doing anything. I've gotten kicked in the rear by "early adoption" before, although to be fair it was Windows 8...

I upgraded most of my machines to Yosemite, and noticed two things. I couldn't get my GTX 680s to work without a fresh install of Yosemite and Cuda (6.5.18 at the time). I don't know if 6.5.25 solves this or not, since they are all working again.

On my AMD box with a 280x, run times for GFN WR went from 3 days (approx) to at least an estimated 5 or 6 days, so I rolled back to Mavericks.

My macbook air (about 3 years old, with a nvidia 320M) is on OS X 10.10.1, and CUDA driver 5.5.47. That card/driver combo worked under Mavericks (after a bit; it didn't work originally, a months-later update fixed it). I'm dead in the water again now with both the original Yosemite and the .1 update. The CUDA control panel under System Preferences claims there is no newer driver version available. I assume that's because the card is a bit old-ish, but hopefully nvidia will support me again soon. To elaborate, "dead in the water" means that OpenCL sees "NVIDIA GPU 0: GeForce 320M"... but that event log message is followed shortly by "App version needs CUDA but GPU doesn't support it" and "Application uses missing NVIDIA GPU". Under "System Report"->"Extensions", it shows the extension NVDANV50HalTesla being loaded. This was a problem under Mavericks, and it appears to have resurfaced.

When I did the latest ".1" OS update, I distinctly remember a big red blob of text at the top of the README saying to *NOT* update nvidia drivers to 6.5. Well I couldn't even if I wanted to, at least using the preferences control panel.

It's not a huge deal, as the GPU is pretty slow (about 7 hours for PPS Sieve), but still it is usable and I like to get stuff working when I can.

The good news, I have the 320M getting recognized on my mini, 10.10.1, cuda ver. 6.0.37. Boinc sees it and acknowledges it.

The bad news, it refuses to fetch GPU tasks "Requesting new tasks for NVIDIA GPU" is immediately followed by "Scheduler request completed: got 0 new tasks".

Never mind-all good news, it was on a profile set to only pull GFN-short in cuda, which I suspect it could never finish in time. Now working like a charm.

Van Zimmerman, just judging by some of the components you've mentioned having in your machines (notably the "AMD machine,") my guess is you're running a hackintosh system, or several given I don't recall Apple ever shipping a machine with a GTX 680 (or any GTX series card for that matter).

If you aren't using Apple hardware, you're liable to experience bugs that Apple hardware might not. That doesn't mean you should stop, since it also looks like you've gotten stuff working again. If that is the case, good on you for getting Yosemite up on non-Apple hardware so quickly. :o

Still haven't upgraded either of my Macs. My parents haven't either. So there are four (modern) Macs here with Mavericks still. The other Macs are between eight and twenty-two years old, so...

No hackintoshes here. EVGA did make a GTX 680 for the mac, although it only had 2G of memory in it. I have flashed 680s w/4G in a mac pro 5,1 and a 3,1, although if you are willing to forego the boot screen, a non-flashed one should work fine.

The "AMD box" refers to the GPU only, and was a terminology failure on my part. It is r9 280X (which strangely shows up as a Tahiti prototype) running in a mac pro 4,1. I don't actually have anything running primegrid on an AMD cpu. If someone develops a freebsd client, I could :)

Interestingly, the default settings were under-utilizing the GPU on the mac pros running 680s. By running 2 PPS work units at a time, I was able to substantially increase (like 25%+) the work done.

My electric bill hurts, though.

For fun, I swapped out the 680 that was in the 12 core Mac Pro for a 980 (nvidia reference card). Aside from the hdmi port not working (had to use dvi), it appears to be working perfectly. Latest nvidia web drivers and cuda 6.5.25.

The old 680 reported
CUDA: NVIDIA GPU 0: GeForce GTX 680 (driver version 6.5.25, CUDA version 6.5, compute capability 3.0, 4096MB, 3464MB available, 3252 GFLOPS peak)

The 980 reports
CUDA: NVIDIA GPU 0: GeForce GTX 980 (driver version 6.5.25, CUDA version 6.5, compute capability 5.2, 4096MB, 3962MB available, 4979 GFLOPS peak)

So we'll see how it does. Before it topped out around 427K points per day (running all cpu tasks and PPS_sieve on the gpu).

I've just updated my MacBook Air (nvidia 320M, OSX "Yosemite" 10.10.1) to CUDA version 6.5.33 via "System Preferences". BOINC version 7.4.26.

No joy. I've had no luck with this machine on GPU since updating to Yosemite.

Thu Dec 25 03:11:05 2014 | | NVIDIA GPU 0: GeForce 320M cannot be used for CUDA or OpenCL computation with CUDA driver 6.5 or later
(not that it is fast anyway)
When I still had version 5.5.(something) of CUDA installed, I just got "GPU missing" from BOINC, rather than the above message. But still BOINC/GPU was not working.

PG CPU tasks are running fine.

wwwwcl "wall-sun-sun" units (opencl) are running fine in under 2 minutes.

CUDA 5.5 straight didn't work under Yosemite (NVIDIA hadn't signed it properly). 6.5 deprecates many gpus, tho some do still work (e.g. my 330m in my laptop), but BOINC 7.4.26 includes a developer decision that cuda 6.5 stopped these cards working on some projects (seti, i think, but i can't find the forum thread).

Try finding one of the Alpha releases (e.g. 7.4.23 here http://boinc.berkeley.edu/dev/forum_thread.php?id=8378&postid=56370), and see if it works (it is possible that your 320m is actually broken with cuda 6.5 however, i haven't looked up it's details). This is the version of BOINC i've left my laptop on, and despite alpha status, i've had no issues.
