We have moved the PRPNet MEGA project over to the BOINC server. To run PPS-Mega, just select the PPS-Mega (LLR) app in your PrimeGrid Preferences.

The PPS-Mega project is part of our Proth Prime Search (PPS) project. There's now three ranges of PPS tests:

PPSE: Currently around n=1.3M and about 400K digits
PPS: Currently around n=2.1M and about 650K digits
Mega: 3.322M < n < 3.6M and just over 1 million digits

The PPS-Mega tasks take about an hour on the fastest computers (Intel Haswell CPUs). This project is ideal for finding mega primes. In all of history, only 97 mega primes have ever been found -- but PrrimeGrid has already found 17 so far this year.

Will you discover the next mega prime?

When the MEGA project was part of PRPnet, work you did there counted as credit toward the PSA badge. Now, the project has been moved to BOINC. MEGA is just a different range in the Proth Prime Search, and work you do now on it in BOINC is credited toward the PPS badge, just like the pre-existing PPS and PPSE projects are counted together.

Hello !

I think there is a problem somewhere.

How comes that ALL WU's I received have also been sent to only 1 cruncher for double checking ???

Computer 431918

I checked on a teammate account :

http://www.primegrid.com/results.php?hostid=423229

His WU's are also waiting to be validated by the SAME second cruncher on the same crunchbox :

Computer 431918

http://www.primegrid.com/show_user.php?userid=311175

Don't know if my post is clear, but ususally, not all (my) wu's have to be doublechecked by the same second cruncher.

Never seen this before + not sure this is normal.

Best,

Philippe

These are comparatively short tasks, less than an hour on the fastest computers, and a computer might download many of these tasks at once. It's therefore not surprising that you're seeing the same computer as the wingman on many of your tasks.

For example, with a three day queue, my computer would download about 300 of these tasks. This particular computer currently has 210 tasks in progress. On my computer, that's a two day queue, which is not in any way unusual. His computer isn't as fast as mine, so 210 tasks represents a longer queue, but it's still not unusual.

Also, remember that we opened up this project less than 24 hours ago, so very few people are running it. Only a small fraction of participants read the forums, so very few people know about this yet.

All told, I see nothing unusual.

There was a GPU application on PRPNet for MEGA, is there going to be one on BOINC ?

No.

(Read on if you feel compelled to ask, "Why?")

We consider llrCUDA to be an incredible waste of computer resources and won't support it. If, for whatever reason, you wish to to run it, you're free to try to make it work using app_info, but don't expect any help from us.

To explain why we consider it to be useless, look at these timings:

On my computer (CPU= Intel Core i5-4670K, GPU=GTX580 (factory overclocked)), it took 5577 seconds to run 27*2^4542344-1 on the CPU. On the GPU -- which uses an entire CPU core as well as the entire GPU -- the run time is 5319 seconds.

I'm still using a full CPU core, and further using an entire GTX 580, as well as about 140 watts to run the GTX 580, and it's speeding up the run by less than 5%.

The only possible reason for running llrCUDA is if you absolutely, positively, have to run a single LLR test as quickly as possible -- for example, if you were trying to verify a PRP found with GeneferCUDA.

But for general testing, it makes no sense.

By contrast, the other apps -- PPS sieve, GCW sieve (currently suspended) and Genefer -- generally run at least 10 times faster on a GPU than on a CPU, and, at least for the CUDA versions, use a very small amount of CPU.

We won't devote any time nor effort trying to support llrCUDA. We don't consider it a good use of our time -- or yours.

Just asked the question, if GPU does not give a benefit then fine I am crunching on my CPU.

Thanks for the reasoning.

Congrats indeed - and Welcome to the Club!

It's amazing how quickly things change... there were 8 mega-primes discovered last month, and this one has already slipped off the top-100 list.

I'm expecting my SR5 mega-prime to follow suit any day now.. It's already dropped 26 places in the 7 months since it was found.

Enjoy it while you can!

That it would quickly drop below the top 100 is inevitable and not surpring at all, at least not to me. If you think about it, this search is designed to search for primes that are barely above one million digits, so if you have a list comprised of mega primes, these will always be very close to the bottom. They'll always be dropping below the ranking of however many mega primes there used to be. With 100 known megaprimes, therefore, it only took two more mega primes to start dropping them below rank 100.

What I find amazing, actually, is that these aren't the smallest mega primes. There's two known primes with exactly one million digits. I'm guessing one or more people intentionally decided to do a constant-n, increasing-k search at exactly the right n to find a prime of exactly a million digits.

The smallest known megaprime is 191273 * 2^3321908 - 1, or 1.708... * 10^999999. Found by Lei Zhou. The second-smallest one has the same exponent and a larger multiplier and was found earlier, also by Zhou. Maybe he was decreasing k?

Suppose you fix this exponent, and search among k * 2^3321908 ± 1. These will cease to be megaprime candidates when k is 111986 or below. And of course will have at less than 1000001 digits when k is 1119860 or below.

It should be possible to find barely-mega primes with (slightly) other values of the exponent n. Maybe there is a new competition discipline here, finding the smallest known (proven) megaprime (the Zhou prime)?

The smallest megaprime "should be" 10^999999 + 593499 (http://www.worldofnumbers.com/megaprp.htm). "Should be" because it is only a PRP.

To be able to prove a number, we'll need about 1/3rd of either N+1 or N-1 factored, which suggests that the best form to find a small _proven_ Megaprime is to look for numbers of the form 10^999999 + k*10^333333 +/- 1. There is some leeway in the second term -- you could probably get away with a lot smaller exponent than 333333
