In the next few months, we're planning on a few changes to ESP. This is preliminary information, and may change.
- The PRPNet port will be shut down.
- ESP-LLR testing will start on BOINC.
- All PRPNet tests will be double checked before new work resumes at the leading edge.
- In December of 2011, a disk crash destroyed all records of previous ESP testing. We want to double check the early work too, so we'll be doing a full retest of that work. The lost work is anything with N<2497279. Tests with N<500K will be manually tested. Tests for 500K < N < 2497279 will be done as full checks in BOINC.
- Tests from N=2497279 up to the last task crunched on PRPNet will then be double checked on BOINC against the PRPNet residues.
- Once the double check is complete, leading edge crunching will resume.
- Double checking and retesting will only be done on the 12 remaining k's.
- ESP-LLR will be a new badge.
- ESP is currently sieved up to N=10M. We will start new sieving for 10M < N < 50M on BOINC by reactivating the PSP Sieve. PSP Sieve is actually the "Any base 2 Sierpinski Sieve", and has sieved SoB and PSP to 50M. It will now be used to bring ESP up to the same level.
- ESP sieving will use the existing "PSP Sieve" badge -- so those of you wishing to upgrade that badge, or who missed it entirely, now have a chance to get a new PSP sieve badge.
- IMPORTANT If you have any "prpclient.log" or "test_results.log" files in your PRPNet directories that show ESP test results from 2010 or 2011, we could use those files to get the lost residues from before the crash. Every residue recovered from one of those log files is one less test we have to run now.
- Exactly when this will happen is not yet determined but it will not be before the current PRPNet ESP challenge finishes and also will not be before the SR5 double check finishes.

Will you wait until port on prpnet is empty?

Don't post them; they tend to be long and of absolutely no interest to anyone else.
Either email them to Jim or myself (preferably zipped). Click on the "Contacts" link at the bottom of this page for email addresses.

That's the thing about PG: there's always some excitement going on.
Will push myself to get my badges up to level when ti happens.
Will be a bit of admin sorting out my xls ;).
I nearly knocked my tea over typing this.

My primary project over the years is SoB (like 9-10years) and would love to see that conjecture resolved some day, but by extension I also have some fondness for all the Sierpinski stuff and numbers in general of course.
I saw the ESP challenge and decided to set PRP up on one of my machines. In the process of setting that up I saw that MEGA was close to a completion milestone and added that too, thereby gimping my possible placement on ESP challenge. -_-
I was pleased though to see BOINC credit showing up for PRP client tasks as I wasnt sure about that.
Will probably be adding ESP LLR and sieve when they roll out on BOINC. I was wondering, are the sieves GPU capable?
Cheers

Unfortunately, the sieves with specific K values, which includes all the conjectures (SoB, PSP, ESP, SR5, TRP) are not conducive to running efficiently on a GPU.
So, like any past or present PSP, ESP, TRP, and SR5 sieving done on either BOINC or in the PSA, this will be CPU only. :(

We're getting all the necessary pieces in place. There's a surprisingly large number of pieces, only a few of which are visible.
This doesn't mean that ESP's debut on BOINC is imminent, but we do want to have all the technical pieces ready to go for when we decide to flip the switch.

I admire all the work you put in PrimeGrid. There's always something new that's happening: a challenge, a special project (double check, reopening of ESP...), change in badges, special results. Especially recently, it's all so much alive!
Moreover, I admire the different ways you communicate about it. A challenge is a race, with a winner and points for most participants. Special projects are formulated as a kind request, an invitation free for all. For the forum, you asked for a few volunteers who are willing to go the extra mile. And concerning ESP you manage to get us on the edge of our seat: 'What would Michael mean by "it's not imminent"? Months? Weeks? Days?'
You guys are great! | |

Thanks for the kind words. It's appreciated!
When I'm vague about something such as a date, it's not because I want it to be mysterious. It's usually because I don't know. Like any endeavour, although we may create a detailed plan for getting to a goal, the plan is likely to have several unknowns. Such is the case with ESP. My "target" is early July after the SR5 challenge, but we might also be able to launch in early to mid June before the SR5 challenge. Or it might take a lot longer than that if one of our "unknowns" goes completely sideways. When enough of the unknowns become known and we're able to come up with a reasonably feasible date, we'll let you know.
What I meant by that particular phrase is that the fact that you can see the ESP statistics on the home page does not mean ESP is going live in the next day or two. It's not. The earliest possible launch time is the second week of June, but I think early July is more likely. But there's too many unresolved issues right now to know for sure.

We're targeting this weekend for starting ESP on BOINC. In preparation for the switch, the ESP PRPNet port will not be sending out any more new work, but will be kept running to allow in-progress work to be returned.

Now that ESP is live, will we be restarting PSP Sieve soon? From my (rather limited) understanding it seems like that'd be happening when we finish double checking (or probably slightly beforehand), and according to your posts in other threads we're about two-thirds of the way through double-checking now. Is that something that's going to be coming up soon or am I misinterpreting it?
EDIT: Actually, looking at this page makes it a bit clearer - you say we've sieved up to n=10mil, and the max currently being tested is ~4.48mil so we're still a fair bit off. In that case, at roughly what point (in terms of n being tested) are you looking at starting up the sieve again, or is it just a matter of whenever you have the time to get it up and running?

We have a while until we need a new sieve file, as it will take a while before n gets to 10M. But when we do get there, it would be nice if we're fully sieved, or at least sieved "a lot". We will therefore be starting the sieving relatively soon. I expect the double check to finish just before the SR5 challenge, so we're looking at starting the sieve right after the SR5 challenge. That's Saturday, June 28th. It's not cast in concrete, but I'd like to start then if everything is ready, including the double checking.
