Welcome to the Race to the New Moon Challenge

As earth is racing towards a new moon, as it does fairly regularly, PrimeGrid is organizing a race on the Cullen LLR project. Although this project is far from new to primegrid, we haven't ever had a challenge on it.

To participate in the Challenge, please select only the Cullen Prime Search (LLR) project in your PrimeGrid preferences section. The challenge will begin May 20th 2014, 19:43 UTC and end May 28th 2014, 19:43 UTC. Application builds are available for Linux , Windows and MacIntel 32 bit and 64 bit. CPU's with AVX capabilities will be significantly faster than the ones without, as this instruction set allows for more computing power.

ATTENTION: The primality program LLR is CPU intensive; so, it is vital to have a stable system with good cooling. It does not tolerate "even the slightest of errors." Please see this post for more details on how you can "stress test" your computer. WU's will take about just under a day on fast/newer computers and two to three days on slower/older computers. If your computer is highly overclocked, please consider "stress testing" it. Sieving is an excellent alternative for computers that are not able to LLR. :)

Restricted airflow is one of the primary reasons for overheating. Take the time to monitor the fans and review the dust buildup. Please, please, please make sure your machines are up to the task.

Time zone converter

The World Clock - Time Zone Converter

NOTE: The countdown clock on the front page uses the host computer time. Therefore, if your computer time is off, so will the countdown clock. For precise timing, use the UTC Time in the data section to the left of the countdown clock.

Scoring Information

Scores will be kept for individuals and teams. Only work units issued AFTER May 20th 2014, 19:43 UTC and received BEFORE May 28th 2014, 19:43 UTC will be considered for credit. We will use a similar, but not the same, scoring method as for BOINC credits .

Therefore, each completed WU will earn a unique score based on its n value. The higher the n, the higher the score. This is different than BOINC cobblestones! A quorum of 2 is NOT needed to award Challenge score - i.e. no double checker. Therefore, each returned result will earn a Challenge score. Please note that if the result is eventually declared invalid, the score will be removed.

For details on how the score is calculated, please see this thread.

At the Conclusion of the Challenge
We would prefer users "moving on" to finish those tasks they have downloaded, if not then please ABORT the WU's instead of DETACHING, RESETTING, or PAUSING.

ABORTING WU's allows them to be recycled immediately; thus a much faster "clean up" to the end of an LLR Challenge. DETACHING, RESETTING, and PAUSING WU's causes them to remain in limbo until they EXPIRE. Therefore, we must wait until WU's expire to send them out to be completed.

Please consider either completing what's in the queue or ABORTING them. Thank you. :)

Best of Luck!!!

Cullen Primes
Cullen numbers are a special kind Proth number. They were first studied by James Cullen in 1905 and are of the form n * 2^n + 1.

As of August 2009, the largest known Cullen prime is 6679881 * 2^6679881 + 1. It is a megaprime with 2,010,852 digits and was discovered by a PrimeGrid participant from Japan.

A Cullen number Cn is divisible by p = 2n − 1 if p is a prime number of the form 8k - 3; furthermore, it follows from Fermat's little theorem that if p is an odd prime, then p divides Cm(k) for each m(k) = (2k − k) (p − 1) − k (for k > 0). It has also been shown that the prime number p divides C(p + 1) / 2 when the Jacobi symbol (2 | p) is −1, and that p divides C(3p − 1) / 2 when the Jacobi symbol (2 | p) is +1.

It is unknown whether there exists a prime number p such that Cp is also prime.

It means a 5.43 AM start for me on Wednesday morning here in eastern Australia (we are 10 hours ahead of UTC time).
I will have to set the alarm as it is normally sleeping time not the time to muck around with computers.
So if I can get out of bed on time I will be able to start this challenge on time.

Hopefully I can also get a gold badge for Cullen as well. I think I need around 18 more work units to get there.

Or just set your computer to run small tasks (PPSE) with no cache, and switch over to Cullen when you wake up. This is an 8 day challenge with fairly long tasks. It's unlikely an hour (or two) will have a significant effect on your score at the end. Starting a little late could even work in your favor. You might complete the exact same number of tasks, but they might be slightly longer tasks which earn more credits and points. (Challenge points and credit should be identical in this challenge, by the way.)

The same strategy applies to people who won't be at their computers when the challenge starts. Leave the computers running PPSE or some other short task with no cache, and at the challenge start, change your preferences on the web to Cullen instead of PPSE. Your computers will soon switch over to the challenge tasks automatically. That's what I'll be doing if I'm not home later today when the challenge starts.

Cullen LLR in about a day? I'm running an AMD FX8350 and I'm getting 112hr WU's. I did run the chip overclocked to 4.8ghz but currently do not have any overclocking to see if it makes any difference. Still seeing over 90hrs with the WU's being processed currently not completed.

Just wondering there is an instruction set that isn't being used because I'm not sure I can afford the 115.8Uberghz processor to get these WU's done in under a day ;) or do you guys just have something against AMD :D

We don't have anything against AMD. If for some reason we wanted to cripple AMD CPU's, we couldn't possibly do any better than AMD has already managed to do on their own.

AMD's implementation of the AVX instruction set is so awful that the LLR program doesn't use AVX on AMD processors. There's simply no advantage to using it. (It's not just LLR. Most, if not all, similar programs, such as PFGW and Genefer only use AVX on Intel chips.)

On Intel processors, AVX (and the subsequent FMA3 with the Haswell CPUs) provides a massive speed improvement. On AMD -- nothing. As a result, Intel CPUs dominate the primality testing domain because they are much, much faster.

If you want fast, you don't need expensive -- but you do need Intel.

Appreciate the fast response, I assumed that the instruction set might be the issue, thanks for confirming it.

As for your statement regarding the price of chips I must disagree, with AMD its not the chip price but the power cost that will get you. Intel is just expensive regardless but has a lead on power cost.

I only have AMD (Phenom CPUs) and process a Cullen in 64 to 76 hours (the 64 bit Linux is a bit faster than 32 bit Windows).
However when a number of the same work unit type are running on all cores things slow down a fair bit so I expect times to be slower than I have been getting recently.

We will see how things travel.

Just so we are on the same page we are talking AVX2 instruction sets, not general AVX correct? I noticed the reference to FMA3 so that is why I'm asking. Thanks!

The price of the speed that comes with the AVX/FMA instructions is that the power consumption goes up proportionally to the speed. So does the heat. The CPU is running faster because it's performing multiple calculations in parallel. That means its circuitry is also consuming electricity and producing heat in parallel. My barely overclocked i5-4670K consumes as much as 95 watts of power running small LLR tasks on all four cores. (I's TDP is 84 watts, but TDP is a rather useless number.)

Just so we are on the same page we are talking AVX2 instruction sets, not general AVX correct? I noticed the reference to FMA3 so that is why I'm asking. Thanks!

The term "AVX2" is frequently used incorrectly. AVX2 really applies to an improved set of integer instructions, which are not of much use to us.

FMA3 is one particular instruction (an enhancement to certain AVX instructions) that is not really part of AVX2, but was released at the same time with the same processors.

Therefore, when we talk about FMA or FMA3, we're talking about the same CPUs as AVX2, but it's the FMA instruction, not the AVX2 instructions, that we're using.

Hello!

Only about 1.3 Hour before the challenge starts, just wanted to wish everybody good luck, hope somebody may find a Cullen Prime!
It has been too long since the last find!

Maybe I'm the one? My last prime was a Proth prime from 5 September 2011!!

AMD's Piledriver supported both FMA3 and FMA4, so I guess I'm still wondering why/how the implementation is flawed I guess. If the support is there why isn't the instruction set used to allow a more efficient use of the processor. I must be missing something...

They have the instructions, but they run much slower than they do on Intel CPUs. It's slow enough so that there's no advantage to using them.

I don't know about piledriver, but when AVX first came out on bulldozer, my understanding was that AMD reduced the transistor count by having only a single AVX ALU for every PAIR of cores rather than one ALU for each core. As a result, if you're using AVX on all cores (e.g., running LLR on all the cores), each core's AVX instructions are effectively running at only half speed. Since AVX isn't quite twice as fast as the previous SIMD instructions, that meant that using AVX was actually slower than not using AVX.

This is my understanding of why it's so slow on AMD and it's possible I have some (or all) of the details wrong. Regardless of the reasons, however, the fact remains that AVX on AMD CPUs is useless to us. At least so far. There's always hope for the future.

Makes sense. Although I've seen a link to a blank page before a challenge has started in the past.

Makes sense. Although I've seen a link to a blank page before a challenge has started in the past.

Previously a lot of things were done manually. Now that there are more automated scripts doing this, it's easier to just them them do their job.

So, yes you saw blank pages before. This will also probably show a blank page once it's run the first time until the first units are returned (approximately 24 hours from start of challenge).

The front page (and many others) used to be modified by hand for things like that, and it's possible I or someone else put the links up before a challenge actually started. I've automated that part now, and the links appear automagically when the statistics are being generated. Likewise, they disappear automatically when the cleanup is done.

AMD is abandoning Bulldozer/Piledriver integer core pairs/single DP FP modules architecture after Excavator and return to Simultaneous Multi Threading (SMT) design in a couple of years.

There's a thought indeed.

Trying 4.4~4.5 overclock. Dared not thought "turbo" or "extreme" XMP profiles as not sure what they do at this time & even though mem is more important than CPU on these latest LLRs.

It looks like I'll be completing the first set of 4 Cullen tasks in about 22 hours. (All cores running with no hyperthreading.) Fast memory helps a LOT with the "multiple-instance slowdown" problem.

Ouchie, seems quite a few of the tasks my computer processed seem to be on their 6-8th round though. Will be interesting to see if any validate before the challenge ends. :(

You're probably more likely to get "good" wingmen during the challenge because a higher percentage of users will be paying attention to what their computers are doing.

Can anyone explain me how does the crunching speed depends on the quantity of memory (size, frequency, channels and latency).
X6 1055T @ 3,5GHz + 4Gb RAM completed 49% of tasks
X6 1055T @ 3,9GHz + 4Gb RAM completed 41% of tasks
X6 1045T @ 3,3GHz + 2Gb RAM completed 22% of tasks
(all of them are boinc dedicated).
Why??

I have an i7 2600k CPU. 8Gb(2x4) of RAM versus 4 Gb of the same RAM almost doubles crunching speed. Is it because of dual channel or is it because of double memory size?

How much RAM per core do I need to get maximum performance?
I think admins should post this information in the starting topic.
Need some good advice for better PG output.

It looks like I'll be completing the first set of 4 Cullen tasks in about 22 hours. (All cores running with no hyperthreading.) Fast memory helps a LOT with the "multiple-instance slowdown" problem.

I can see Michael that you only took 22.5 hours or thereabouts for 4 work units at a time.
At 38 hours my fastest job has only done 56% and most others between 30 to 50 percent range.
So I will need at least 3 times as long to run each work unit.

I could possibly run a second lot of work units on my 64 bit Linux machines as I think they will do two lots in 8 days but I will probably just run a single group of work units on each machine, that will be 19 work units across 20 AMD Phenom cores (I am also still running a CPU Genefer WU as well).

It should be enough to get me to my GOLD badge level so I will be happy with that. Intel have the upper hand by a mile in this project that is for sure.

Most likely because recent Intel processors are just plain faster than AMD offerings. See earlier posts in this thread.

Also, your computers are 'hidden' as per your PrimeGrid preferences so all we can do is assume that you run the same operating system on all of your computers - the choice of o/s can affect task processing.

Cullen tasks use less than 60 MB each, so you could easily run this in 1 GB in memory if you wanted to if your OS is lightweight.

There's a lot of things that affect the speed of LLR. The size of your memory is one of the few things that does not affect speed.

Having an Intel AVX or FMA CPU, CPU speed, memory speed, and number of memory channels are the biggest factors. Your core-i7 is much faster than your AMD CPUs because it supports AVX; the amount of memory it has is irrelevant.

If you're looking for a computer that will run LLR quickly, you want to get an Intel Haswell CPU and fast (e.g., 2400 MHz) RAM. If you can afford an expensive system, dual channel memory will help too.

Can anyone explain me how does the crunching speed depends on the quantity of memory (size, frequency, channels and latency).

From my experience:

First of all, AVX is mandatory, and AVX2 (FMA) is better then AVX :)

Double-channel memory is also mandatory. It's much faster to use 2x2 Gb chips then single 4Gb. I have two identical Core2 systems which differs only in number of memory chips. Dual-channel one is about 20% faster.

Frequency and latency - as usual, faster is better, but take care of latencies - PC1333 CL9 is almost the same as PC1600 CL11. High frequency memory with low latency costs more...

Memory size does not matter at all (each Cullen task uses only 55Mb on my Windows system, SoB will eat more but 2 Gb is enough on XP).

And finally, for 4-core CPUs you must test your workstation manually with given workunit type and FFT size. For big FFT sizes (which all PG workunits now have) memory throughput becomes a bottleneck. With common hardware, 4 cores usually performs with same speed as 3 cores. On one my system, overall output of 4 cores (sum of number of iteration per second for all crunchers) is even less then from 3...

Examples: expected completion times for Cullen on my systems:

E5300 @ 2.60GHz, 2 cores, single channel - 111 h
E5300 @ 2.60GHz, 2 cores, dual channel - 94,5 h (probably even better, this PC is more heavily loaded by regular tasks then first one).
E5700 @ 3.00GHz, 2 cores, dual channel - 91 h

Celeron CPU 450 @ 2.20GHz (1 core) - 83,5h

G850 @ 2.90GHz, 2 cores - 50,5h
i5-3470 CPU @ 3.20GHz (AVX), 4 cores - 37h
i7-4770K CPU @ 3.50GHz (AVX2), dual channel, 3 of 4 cores - 26h

The last system was limited to 3 cores because 4th cruncher slowing things down so much that overall output will be same or even less. Remaining core could be left idle to cool down CPU a bit, or used for other, non memory-intensive, projects.

Wingless Wonder, I have 14 PCs with Win7 SP1 x64 and one with Win 8 x64.

Michael, I will test few hardware combinations right after the chelly.
If it's not about the size of the memory how can dual channel make 20-30% faster speeds? Almost all of my memory are DDR3 1600 and only one kit 1866.
It's empty words from me, I know that you need facts. I will write my results when my AMD x6 will complete the first lap.

Also I have a question. How does the integrated boinc manager's performance test make influence on PG computing? Do I need to check it every time when I change my RAM sticks or does PG refresh this info with every start of Boinc manager?
I'm making a small test, I reinstalled my ram sticks (2x2Gb) in non dual channels.

Memory access is usually the limiting factor on the speed of the LLR program. Anything that makes memory faster increases performance.

"Dual channel" or "Single channel" has nothing to do with the amount of memory you have. Each channel is a path from the CPU to the memory. On a single channel motherboard, the CPU can read or write one word at a time. On a dual channel motherboard, the CPU can read or write two words simultaneously. Remember that you may have 2, 4, 6, or more cores running independently of each other, but they're all using the same memory. Being able to access two words in memory at once means that two cores, rather than only one core, are able to access memory in the same amount of time.

Also I have a question. How does the integrated boinc manager's performance test make influence on PG computing? Do I need to check it every time when I change my RAM sticks or does PG refresh this info with every start of Boinc manager?

For PrimeGrid it makes no difference at all. For other projects, it might affect the credit you get on each tasks, but PrimeGrid no longer uses that credit system. Even if you do nothing, the benchmarks are run whenever BOINC detects a hardware change, and the benchmarks are repeated once a week even if the hardware doesn't change.

WU's worth 743 hours still pending, 464 hours worth have been invalidated. Nothing has been validated atm. No error-ed out WU's but purged the rest due to the long run times and another upcoming challenge .

The FX-8350 really struggled fully loaded at 111 hours per WU, with just the physical cores loaded (4) the times went down to 60 hours at the end. Ran out of time to finish any more WU's so I'll never know the best run times for the chip unfortunately.

Chip AMD FX-8350
Memory 2 x 8gig stick ddr3 1600 Crucial low profile (placed to support dual channel set up)
Motherboard M5A99X EVO R2.0

Was an interesting test to see what the capabilities were for the chip on these larger WU's, good luck to participants for the rest of the challenge!

Two questions: Is your CPU overclocked? We don't usually see validation failures due to bad residues unless the CPU is overclocked and is failing. If it's not overclocked, something is wrong. Do you get validation errors on our other LLR projects, or is this the first time you've run that computer on PrimeGrid?

The second question is about your comment regarding "physical cores". What did you mean by that? I wasn't aware that AMD used anything like hyperthreading, which is the only context in which I've seen that phrase used.

The second question is about your comment regarding "physical cores".

IRT Overclocking:
The first eight WU's were subjected to overclocking(4.8ghz) when ran, the rest were ran at non-turbo clocking(4.0ghz) to see if stability would be an issue. Temperatures stayed well within operational limits overclocked(40-50C, chip can be ran to 60-65C overclocked).

At non-turbo speeds the temperatures stayed 15-22C, I really do not think heat was an issue with the invalidation. This was my first testing for the Cullen LLR, I've ran (Riesel, Sierpinski / Riesel, PSP, Woodall, TPS, and 321 Prime Search) LLRs with no issue before on overclocked settings.

IRT Physical cores:
Guru3d FX-8350 review
Guru3d does a better explanation.
While the chip has eight physical cores there is four Piledriver modules driving them all. I was incorrect in previous post with the Core statement. The link above will elaborate. I believe with one core per module plus less cores communicating with the ram led to the decrease in times.

I don't know what to tell you. You're getting computation errors which appear to be hardware failures. These are typically seen when there's excessive overclocking (not necessarily heat related, although it could be.)

I did check the database to make sure it's not something related to your specific CPU, and it's not. I have examples in the database of FX-8350 CPUs validating against Intel CPUs using the same version of LLR as you did. Same hardware and same software as you have, and they produce the correct result. Yours doesn't.

If it's not overclocking, my next guess would be faulty memory. I have no reasonable theory about why it may have worked in the past but isn't working now. Something changed, but it's not obvious what.

Interesting. Given that Piledriver only uses 50% floating point speed, you likely should run LLR and or the CPU version of Genefer on 4 cores rather than all 8. Both programs are nearly 100% floating point, and since you'll get better cache hit ratios with fewer instances, it's likely that total throughput will be increased when running only 50% of the cores. In other words, if you run LLR on 8 cores, I would expect each task to take more than twice as long as each task would take if you're running 4 cores.

It may be a long shoot, but one explanation to your 20-30% difference could be that the 2 tests with the most progress, could be testing an even k. Since all even k tests is divisible by 2 (at least one time, most times more), you will for even k's end up testing a smaller and faster odd-k. The slow k, could be an odd-k/odd-n test, where the k does not reduce at all and hence you are most likely testing an 11,000,000+ k value. These are dramatically much slower than k's that reduces to a very small k.

I'm not sure if this explains what you are seeing, but it's a very possible cause for your timedifferences.

Took the tower down for maintenance last night. Will clean the screens and check on some Hardware configurations I'm working with to sort out some wire ugliness before I bring it back up with the overclocking settings and I really need to allocate some time to memory testing.

I've tried to go back and see the last set up I was running the LLR's with due to the fact I just upgraded hardware last June. The WU's history doesn't go back that far though. It may be I had the slower memory and cpu at that time when I ran those so that would bring me back to doing some memory testing.

Since last June the computer has run the gambit of projects and I've not seen any issues. I've ran some rather large WU's from other projects but that doesn't mean there is no issue with the random ram allocation that can go on.

I find that if in doubt, as long as your memory isn't actually faulty, then you can usually fall back on the RAM's XMP settings, along with a CPU multiplier you know to be stable.

Sandy Bridge CPUs had some strange "properties" where the memory wouldn't run exactly at its XMP speeds, for example I think my 2133 sticks, which are supposed to run at 1066x2, actually ran at 966x2 with a Sandy Bridge and a Z68 mobo. It said that would happen in the mobo manual, too. That's a bit of a tangent, though.

Took the time to run the Windows memory test on extensive mode(Mats+,Stride38,wschckr,wstride-6,chckr4,wchcker3,erand,stride6, and chcker8) for seven passes after bringing the tower back up. Went through the log and found that seven passes didn't check all the memory(pages tested 4167985/untested 1122) so will let it run longer tonight...More time the tower is not crunching :(.

As for memory settings with the cpu currently on a non-overclocked setting the memory voltage and its frequency has remained steady at 802.7, north bridge has also not dropped below freq 1605.

Current timings are 8,8,8,24(standard timings) and do not change when cpu is overclocked, voltage is kept at 1.5V since I really do not want to run the ram at 1.35V when I am relying on fast access.

In the end I was able to find out more about what the current hardware I'm running can do and its limitations, I do appreciate the assistance and hope everyone has a great weekend!

I know th feeling trying to push things, especially as I have a SB w/ Z68. BSODs @ 45× 1600 RAM but not 44×. I think it'd be ok at 46× with 1333 RAM. Again as per gazzy's comment on RAM it's supposed to be 1600.

You're probably best off 'underclocking' slightly & getting more done than having the downtime. Do a RAtest outside of a challenge. It feels as though one is wasting time but you appreciate the stability.

Look how single core mobile Celeron @1,7GHz easily beats overclocked quad-core Q6600 @3,1GHz in a single task performance.

One more interesting thing.
x6 1055T @3,2 GHz 4Gb (2x2Gb) DDR3 1600MHz -1WU/66 hours
x6 1055T @3,6 GHz 4 Gb (1x4Gb) DDR3 1700MHz - 83% of 1 WU/95 hours
x6 1045T @3,1 GHz 2 Gb (1x2Gb) DDR3 1550MHz - 51%/79 hours

That's insane difference between 1 and 3. More than 2 times.

Look how single core mobile Celeron @1,7GHz easily beats overclocked quad-core Q6600 @3,1GHz in a single task performance.

Something odd about that. My Q9400@stock is much faster than either, even with 4 WUs running. Got some runaway background process?

One more interesting thing.

x6 1055T @3,6 GHz 4 Gb (1x4Gb) DDR3 1700MHz - 83% of 1 WU/95 hours
x6 1045T @3,1 GHz 2 Gb (1x2Gb) DDR3 1550MHz - 51%/79 hours

That's insane difference between 1 and 3. More than 2 times.

It is slow ?

Look how single core mobile Celeron @1,7GHz easily beats overclocked quad-core Q6600 @3,1GHz in a single task performance.

Let me explain to you why this is that way.

Your CPU has a memory hierachy that looks like that.
CPU Register -> L1 Cache -> L2 Chache -> L3 Cache -> DDR2 RAM

The further the memory stands to the right the further away is it from the CPU core.

To compare the capacity of those memory i'll give you some numbers:
CPU Register: about 20 to 100 numbers (depending on the CPU und the program code)
L1 Cache: 16 kByte or 2000 numbers
L2 Cache: 128 or 256 kByte or 16000 or 32000 numbers
L3 Cache: 2 to 8 MB or 256000 or 512000 numbers
RAM: enougth to slip the numbers

To keep is as simple as possible lets asume that every clock tick your CPU can do per CPU core one addition, mutiplication, comparision or other operation. Just from guessing the FFT algorithm from LLR tasks mostly need addition and mutiplications. Those operations need 1 clock cycle to execute. So if you have a 3,1GHz CPU you can theoretically do 3,1 Billion additions or multiplications per second. This is true as long as the nummers that should be added are stored in a CPU register. If not they have to be loaded into a CPU register to perform this addition.
Now starts the critical process of loading the number.
The CPU starts a do called LOAD operation. That means is looks for the needed number in the L1 cache. If it is stored in the L1 Cache it takes 4 clock cycle to get stored into a CPU register. If not the search continues into the L2 chache. If it is there it takes 12 clock cycle to get stored into a CPU register. If not the search continues into the L3 chache. If it is there it takes 28 clock cycle to get stored into a CPU register.
And if it isn't in the L3 Cache either it has to be loaded from the RAM. That takes depending on your RAM type and speed many more clock cycles.

Because the CPU is waiting to get this one number it can't continue to do the additions and multiplications untill is gets the number. So while all these clock cycles the CPU just waits and does nothing.

Now to the LLR tasks. Those tasks need a huge amount of numbers that won't fit completly into the CPU Registers or L1 or L2 cache, and if your are running multiple tasks at once mostly even in the L3 Cache. Therefore the CPU has to load numbers very often from the RAM which takes quite long and slows the execution down.

There is a limited amount of numbers that can be loaded from the RAM every second. And even one LLR tasks can get very close to that amount. So if you are running 4 tasks on 4 cores the 4 cores want to load 4 times more numbers per second. But you have just 1 RAM slot so it has to divide the aount of numbers delivered to the cores and every core just recieves 1/4th of the needed numbers per second.

To sum it up your 1 core Celeron at 1.7 Ghz may have a slower clock than your Q9something with 4 cores at 3.1 GHz, but those 4 cores are most of the time just waiting to get numbers to add or multiplicate. Your Celeron instead recieves the numbers faster because he hasn't to share the access to the RAM and therfore can do more operations.

There are much more details that i haven't written here to keep it as simple as possible.

TL;DR;
Your Quad Core CPU just waits most of the time for a RAM access and therefor is slower than your Celeron Single Core CPU

At the Conclusion of the Challenge
We would prefer users "moving on" to finish those tasks they have downloaded, if not then please ABORT the WU's instead of DETACHING, RESETTING, or PAUSING.

ABORTING WU's allows them to be recycled immediately; thus a much faster "clean up" to the end of a Challenge. DETACHING, RESETTING, and PAUSING WU's causes them to remain in limbo until they EXPIRE. Therefore, we must wait until WU's expire to send them out to be completed.

(My thanks to our esteemed Challenge-Meister [DPC]Charley for that announcement, as well as for all the work that goes into organizing these challenges!)

There's about 10 hours to go. We've completed about 2000 challenge tasks per day, which is 10 times normal, and that number doesn't include tasks sent before the challenge started or tasks that will be returned after the challenge ends.

Challenge: Race to the New Moon
(As of 2014-05-28 09:22:34 UTC)

38381 tasks have been sent out. [CPU/GPU/anonymous_platform: 38338 (100%) / 0 (0%) / 43 (0%)]

Of those tasks that have been sent out:

12552 (33%) came back with some kind of an error. [12548 (33%) / 0 (0%) / 4 (0%)]
15801 (41%) have returned a successful result. [15770 (41%) / 0 (0%) / 31 (0%)]
10028 (26%) are still in progress. [10020 (26%) / 0 (0%) / 8 (0%)]

Of the tasks that have been returned successfully:

5018 (32%) are pending validation. [5006 (32%) / 0 (0%) / 12 (0%)]
10508 (67%) have been successfully validated. [10489 (66%) / 0 (0%) / 19 (0%)]
40 (0%) were invalid. [40 (0%) / 0 (0%) / 0 (0%)]
235 (1%) are inconclusive. [235 (1%) / 0 (0%) / 0 (0%)]

The current leading edge (i.e., latest work unit for which work has actually been sent out to a host) is n=12150642. The leading edge was at n=11535132 at the beginning of the challenge. Since the challenge started, the leading edge has advanced 5.34% as much as it had prior to the challenge!

The "Race to the New Moon Challenge" is now over. I am currently at position 157 on "the list" and it appears that there are 10 other individuals above me (at this time) who crunched without a team. Assuming nothing else changed, does that mean my score for this Challenge is 494? I still have a few Pending Work Units which were turned in before the deadline and I am also hoping to finish the remaining units rather than abort. I will be interested to see what my total work will be for Cullen in another week or two. It was "fun" to participate in this Challenge with other people although I would have liked a little more chatter, maybe a live chat room rather than just a forum. Thank you all.

If you're in the 157th position when the scores are final, then yes, you will get 494 points. The scores won't be final until all enough tasks have been validated to insure that the positions can't change. With tasks this long, I expect that to take 6 to 12 weeks.

It was "fun" to participate in this Challenge with other people although I would have liked a little more chatter, maybe a live chat room rather than just a forum. Thank you all.

There is a chatroom, although it's not specifically for the challenge. The link is on the left, right below the link to these message boards.

Usually there isn't a lot of cleanup work available, but right now there is. According to the front page, there's a bit over 200 cleanup tasks waiting to be sent out that can affect scoring positions.
