On 28 March 2014 19:57:24 UTC, PrimeGrid’s Mega Prime Search, through PRPNet, found the Mega Prime: 87*2^3496188+1

The prime is 1,052,460 digits long and enters Chris Caldwell's The Largest Known Primes Database ranked 70th overall.

The discovery was made by Gary Craig (Gary Craig) of the United States using an Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-2600K CPU @ 3.40GHz with 4GB RAM running Linux. This computer took just over 1 hour 11 minutes to complete the primality test using LLR. Gary is a member of the Aggie The Pew team.

For more details, please see the official announcement.

not to raise a fuss, but can I ask why 87*2^3496188+1 at 1,052,460 digits is 70th on Caldwell's list, while 51*2^3490971+1 at 1,050,899 digits (and announced an hour and a half later) is 69th? Are they atleast opposite (69th and 70th, not 70th and 69th)?

It's actually correct as is.

The smaller prime was entered onto the list first, and it went into the 69th position.

The larger prime was put into the list later, and would have taken over the 69th position, (and thus also gone in as 69th), except that between the time of the two entries, another unrelated and larger prime was added to the list. Our second and larger prime therefore entered the list at #70 while our first, smaller prime entered the list at #69.

The order they were entered into the list was not the same as the order they were announced here. Different criteria affect the timing of adding a prime to the top 5000 list and making an official announcement.
