R9 290X - PPS Sieve

Hello !
I am trying to help another cruncher (http://www.primegrid.com/show_user.php?userid=54689) understanding why he can't receive any PPS Sieve WU's for his R9 290X.
On the "Fastest GPU Page", this card don't appear at all (Except R9 280X)
Is this an indication that one cannot run PPS Sieve on R9 290 ?
Even with the app_info file one can find in the GFN Challenge' forum ... ?
Any Idea ?
Important : He runs 1 nVidia GTX680 + 1 R9 290X in the same machine.
Thank You
Kind regards,
Phil1966 | |

Try adding this line in cc_config file:
<use_all_gpus>1</use_all_gpus>
If 1, use all GPUs (otherwise only what boinc thinks is the most capable ones are used).
Check how to here:http://boinc.berkeley.edu/wiki/Client_configuration

The BOINC server does not recognize the 290 and won't automatically send tasks to it. It should, however, send tasks to it if you use a correctly configured app_info file.
Please post the app_info file contents, the location (directory) of where you put that file, and both the beginning of the BOINC log as well as the portion of the BOINC log that shows what happens when you request work.

I saw this thread at MiklyWay
http://milkyway.cs.rpi.edu/milkyway/forum_thread.php?id=3457#60992
And essentially they said that after some testing they got the newer cards to work over there by:
"If you run on a R9 280X*, you can download BOINC v 7.2.39 here, but you will also need AMD APP (Accelerated Parallel Processing)"
The link to download 7.2.39 is here:
https://boinc.berkeley.edu/dev/forum_thread.php?id=8378&postid=52011#52198
and the link to download the amd app stuff is here"
http://developer.amd.com/tools-and-sdks/heterogeneous-computing/amd-accelerated-parallel-processing-app-sdk/
I am wondering if that will let the newer AMD cards run here too?

If you want, try to catch me in the chatroom. If we're both online at the same time, I can turn on the trace on the server while your computer requests work. That is often useful when it's not obvious why work isn't being sent.

290 won't get WUs for me either.
Two tips.
First, BOINC recognises OpenCL but not CAL.
(compare your BOINC log output with mine).
Is AMD-APP-SDK-v2.9-Windows-641.exe installad?
Second, there might be something broken in 7.2.42. I see you've upgraded from 7.2.33
It worked for me using 7.2.39, worth a try?

Is there any real solution for this annoying issue?
I am unable to set my Asus R9 290 to crunch, even with BOINC 7.2.39 and AMD APP SDK instaled with original 13.251-131206a-165807C-Asus / ATI 14.4 driver. BOINC beta 7.3.13 does not help too.

If those suggestions don't work, at this time the only other action I can suggest is to use app_info, which is guaranteed to work.

Can you explain what cause the problem? Maybe I can run some debug mode? I had no problem with 270X onboard, but 290 is a real pain.
I think the key is missing CAL, like this one (my other PC):
CAL: ATI GPU 0: AMD Radeon HD 6570/6670/7570/7670 series (Turks) (CAL version 1.4.1848, 1024MB, 991MB available, 931 GFLOPS peak)
I bet, that real problem lays somewhere in BOINC manager.
PS.
And here is the best part, at primegrid page, where my computers are listed, when i look at GPU table i see:
PC with R9 290: CAL Hawaii (3072MB), vbox 4.3.12 () but no driver version like at my other machines:
Laptop with ATI 6570: CAL AMD Radeon HD 6570/6670/7570/7670 series (Turks) (1024MB) driver: 1.4.1848, vbox 4.2.0 ()
PC with ATI 7850: CAL AMD Radeon HD 7850/7870 series (Pitcairn) (1024MB) driver: 1.4.1848

Could your compare versions of video drivers installed on both systems? I heard rumors that AMD started dropping support for CAL (also known as ATI STREAM) in newest drivers in favor of openCL, so you may need to downgrade. Or you may need to install extra package for CAL... cannot say for sure, I didn't paid much attention to this area for a long time.
Try to google for other independent CAL / ATI STREAM programs/examples and see on which of your systems could you run them. Then it would be clear is it a problem with video drivers (CAL not supported) or Boinc GPU detection issue.
|
|
As i have stated before, i tried different version of drivers, but it looks like it's something else. I made simple test - took off R9 290, put my previous R9 270X - voila it's working, than again took off R9 270X, put R9 290 - not working ;(

The log which you've posted is an information about openCL API. As far as I understand, PrimeGrid applications requires CAL (AMD STREAM) API.
Ok, try to download following: http://http.distributed.net/pub/dcti/current-client/dnetc-win32-x86-stream.zip
Run "dnetc.com -gpuinfo"
If you'll see long output with lot of different hex numbers - at least you card is detectable.
If you'll see "Cannot initalize..." etc. - I'm sorry, CAL API for your card is not supported. Check it with working card to be sure that it's not a program's error.
May be R9 280X is not supported yet (need new drivers). May be it'll never be supported because AMD is dropping CAL support and moving to openCL... Don't know for sure.
Also, you'll be able to use your card if PrimeGrid will ever have openCL versions of their GPU applications.

Can you explain what cause the problem?
Going by memory (I last looked at this several months ago), the problem is that the latest ATI cards aren't identified in the same way by the drivers, and therefore the BOINC client doesn't recognize them. The client, in turn, doesn't tell the server that the cards are capable of running the tasks.
Again, if I remember correctly, there was no easy way to fix this on the server -- either the drivers or the BOINC client needed to change, and we have control of neither of those.
If the tips in the earlier messages don't work, the only thing I can suggest is to use app_info. It's a nuisance, but it WILL work.

Thank You guys for your help. I think I just leave this as is. I think it should be a subject to consider for app developpers, not mine, to make top GPU's working fine without any "tricks".

Thank You guys for your help. I think I just leave this as is. I think it should be a subject to consider for app developpers, not mine, to make top GPU's working fine without any "tricks".
As stated it's an AMD decision to make changes to their new R series, and beyond, cards that now the Main Boinc Programmers must make changes to the Server Side of Boinc. OR you can use some simple tricks. ie the app_info file, and it will work now.
As for 'tricks' we gpu crunchers have been using them since the very beginning of being able to use gpu's here at Boinc. The Programmers seemed to have never envisioned people using more then a single gpu to crunch with, in a single machine, and are now modifying the whole code to make some major changes. ALOT of people are using 2 gpu's in a single machine now and SOME people have more then 3 or 4 gpu's in a single machine!! Can you just imagine the 'tricks' needed to make a 3 or 4 gpu machine, each on it's own project, work efficiently? How about 2 on 1 project and 2 on a different one, or some other combination of that. There are/were even 'tricks' needed to make 2 gpu's work in a Windows machine that involve MAKING a 'dummy plug' just so Windows doesn't turn off the 2nd gpu to 'save resources' if there is no monitor plugged into it.
In short 'tricks' is how we crunchers take gaming type parts and make them work for us and good grief do the credits come pouring out of them when we do! Apparently gaming does not require any 'CAL' stuff, and since gaming is a much better sales point then crunching is AMD is making a choice to better serve their market. And we crunchers are going to have to learn to deal with it, we can either use 'tricks' to make them work or not buy the new R series gpu's, and any newer ones from AMD either as they will NOT have CAL in them either.

Believe me, it's not i do not want cause i'm lazy or something.
Imagine, I already had 7xR9 290 config in one machine and that was hard to run :) I built my custom 4U RACK case to fit all, than i had to fight with stupid OS GPU limits, than make appropriate configs. That was tough.
I wrote this, because we are giving free computational power to some project, so why should we concern? This is only one way free, i pay for electricity, so if I am ready to be a volounteer, than project holders should care how to use it, not us.

Programming new applications takes time. It may not even be the application that is 100% the issue, it may be partially BOINC itself and as most crunchers know it is written by a small dedicated subset of people, but they have to do a lot of testing before it is allowed out in the wild.
This is why the programmers built in the ability for the users to make adjustments and get their equipment working faster than waiting for the programmers.
Since there is more than one group involved in this, it will probably take time to fix. AMD isn't done playing. The R290 is already different than the R270. How are those programmers able to keep up with the quick and ever changing minds of the GPU engineers, programmers, etc? The issues are found after they are on the market, because most projects are not funded with tons of money and they have to budget every cent they have and cannot keep buying new equipment as it hits the shelves to test. Again, a good reason for the ability for the user to do the testing.
So, remember, there are millions of crunchers, a few dozen projects, many with people like you and me, having a regular job and running the project on the side and not having all day to make it all work for every new piece of equipment that is released.

I do have the same problem with my 290-X cards. Can someone please post a ready to use app-info for pps sieve and genefer? (win64 edition)... thank you all in advance

290 won't get WUs for me either.
Two tips.
First, BOINC recognises OpenCL but not CAL.
(compare your BOINC log output with mine).
Is AMD-APP-SDK-v2.9-Windows-641.exe installad?
Second, there might be something broken in 7.2.42. I see you've upgraded from 7.2.33
It worked for me using 7.2.39, worth a try?
I thought the apps to run prime where open cl.
So where is the problem then ? :P
Anyways does not work here neither.
It worked for you, okey how many r9 290 are you running, cant see you computers are hidden
Anyways CAL dont work neither, i got "CAL Hawaii (3072MB)" no open cl and still i get 0
Mhz maby thats the actual problem. did not look before, but if that thing sad CAL before i started messing with it maby thats why i dont get open CL units.
In collatz it say's "AMD Hawaii (3072MB) OpenCL: 1.02"
In the logfile it say's

I guess that in order to support (easily, without anonymous platforms) the Hawaii GPUs a project needs both a suitable application (no CAL/Stream but any openCL one should be fine) AND a server upgrade (at least the gpu recognition part of it).
