Hello, this is my first post here. I use a XFX Radeon HD 7850 OC and have noticed that after a WU is complete, it shuts down and won't work anymore. I completed a genefer task no problem and it begins the next wu, but does not go anywhere. I register as having no activity on the gpu in the hardware monitor. If I suspend the new WU and restart it, it will carry on no problem but I can't be at my computer 24/7 to restart my WU's every time a new one starts. This is the second time this happened in a row and has wasted hours of work. Anyone having a similar issue?

I updated my driver to the new beta (13.25.18-131107a-164684E-ATI) as well as downloaded the APP SDK because I had a previous issue with all GPU tasks failing after a few seconds. Its not a heat issue, I manually set my fan to 68% and it holds a steady 60*C. I'm also not overclocked on the card, its at the stock 975/1200 GPU/Mem clock. I use windows 8.1 and BOINC 7.2.28 on this machine. My power settings are set to high performance and not to shutdown anything but the display.

Thanks

Unless you are also a gamer stay away from the Beta releases of the software, in fact once you find a version that works stick with it for awhile as most gpu software updates benefit gamers not crunchers. All of the last 3 Nvidia releases made crunching SLOWER, but made gaming faster.

Do you leave a cpu core free for your gpu to use as it crunches? If not you might try changing the settings on your pc and see what happens, it could be your gpu just isn't getting enough cpu time to feed it so it seems as though it isn't working.

Thanks, I'll be sure to try that. I do play games on occasion, but having two little ones keeps me busy and my systems primarily working BOINC tasks. I'll roll back my driver to a stable release as my cpu bottlenecks my gpu anyway and any driver performance gain in gaming would be negligible. I primarily play FFXIV and don't have an HD display so I don't need ultra graphics anyway. At least till I upgrade to a new mobo and cpu, but by that point I'll be aiming towards a R9 290X.

I am smiling as I think back to my first upgrades, 30 years ago now, and how my basement is now FULL of old, used pc 'parts'! I still have some OLD 500 megabyte drives that I need to run a drill through before I trash them. I have drives from there all the way up to some 10, 20 and 30 gb drives! Everything 80gb and above I still use in Boinc only machines, Linux loves the older, smaller drives. Although I did find a REALLY good buy on a stack of 160gb drives, 25 bucks a piece, a while back I am now using in my Windows machines.

I rolled back my driver and all seems well, thanks.

mikey, I hear you, I have boxes of parts that are more or less useless in terms of performance and power efficiency but I just can't seem to part with them. I used to be a huge pc gamer and a ten year stint where I had more money than I knew what to do with so I upgraded my pc's as soon as the next big thing came out. Now I'm 27 with a 3 year old and 9 month old, my job was hit hard by the economy (manufacturing in Michigan), and my GI Bill from my time in the service is going towards a bachelors in network security. Needless to say my high end pc days are on hold for now. I'm relatively new to BOINC (less than a year) but the concept has sparked a huge interest in me, especially the WCG due to the nature of their research. I run two poweredge servers around the clock when my power bills allow for it but since WCG has no GPU tasks for the time being I've picked up Primegrid and once I found my first prime I can't wait for another.

I am NOT advocating or anything else but as a former gamer have you tried mining for bitcoins yet? They were selling above the price of a share of Apple stock the other day, and you can make your own at home using your unused gpu's. I am not going to give any advice on who or where to crunch for, do some research on the net FIRST!! I did two bitcoins several years ago and at the time it cost more to make one then they were worth, so I stopped and now exclusively crunch. But with the value of a single coin going up so far, it might be time to rethink the idea.

BTW you don't get ACTUAL coins, you get virtual coins you can turn into real money in your bank account, or use the virtual money to pay for things at places that take them.
