...has been found.

It hasn't been returned yet by the double checker, but we've verified it ourselves (yes, we collectively have the patience of a two year old.) The normal double checker will get the normal credit when he or she returns the result.

Feel free to speculate wildly about who found it, how long it is, whether it's a Riesel or Sierpinski number, etc.

The prime was found as part of the challenge.

And congratulations to the prime finder! You don't know who you are, but we do! :)

When the double-checker is done..
Will you publish the information about this first SR5 prime?!

(we also have the patience of a 2 year old :P )

Edit: I think cncr04s or [DPC]x-RaY99_the_one_man_team make a good chance of being the lucky finder (as they are massively in the lead). If it is one of those, then i am hoping for my fellow power-cow x-RaY99 ^^

Once it's all confirmed and reported, yes, but we don't do full news announcements for primes under a million digits. SR5 is still under a million digits.

I just made a news announcement regarding the fact that llr will perform a second test, three times as long as the first test, when it thinks it has found a Riesel (-1) base 5 prime. Sierpinski (+1) primes run in the normal time.

So if you see an SR5 that seems to be running really long, don't abort it. It will also likely go from 100% done to 0% done when it starts the second test.

According to http://www.primegrid.com/stats_sr5_llr.php WUs are still being sent out above known primes (R5: k=114986 above n=1052966 and k=119878 above n=1019645).

Granted that this is just a couple of hundred tests, but still a bit wasteful (and the database doesn't have RES64s above the known primes, so that's two test for each n). These GFLOPs could be used on other ks.

On many BOINC projects, the remaining estimated time gradually increases instead of decreases if the initial estimate of the run time was far enough below the actual time you seem to be headed for.

Also, on some types of PrimeGrid workunits, the closer you seem to be to finding a prime, the higher the estimated total time will get.

Perhaps someone at PrimeGrid should mention whether you get any bonus points for actually finding a prime, or the longer time some workunits take when finding a prime seems more likely.

We goofed, a little. We set up an automatic system to suppress additional work above a prime when the prime is found, but didn't realize until too late that we needed to manually inhibit the candidates above your two primes. By the time we recognized that oversight, a few hundred of them had already been generated and it was too late to cancel them. We were, however, able to cancel a large majority of them, almost 1400 in total.

The automatic system did work as intended for the two primes found today.

You're right. :)

Now I'm actually glad that there's a bunch of higher-n candidates distributed before they get suspended. It obfuscates the exact nature of the prime.

I guess that you would have posted that earlier if you had known it before the SR5 go-live. There has to be a reason that you got to know that behavior yesterday, so I conclude that the second prime is on the Riesel side. ;)

This reminds of an old trick question on probabilities.

Suppose you met your schoolmate for the first time after 20 years, and after talking to him about life, you have learned that he had two kids now. He also mentioned that one of the children was a girl but you don't remember what he said about the other.

Now, what is the probability that he has two girls?
___________

Back to S vs R. My guess is that the other is a [spoiler: Riesel but an already known one]

I would bet a prime has been found for 243686*5^n-1. On the stat page it looks peculiar as it does not get new candiates to be tested.

Actually that seems to be true for 2 other k values: 114986 and 119878. So all that is probably true is that one of these 3 k values has been eliminated :-)

These two k's have already been greyed for a while on the SR5 welcome page (http://www.primegrid.com/forum_thread.php?id=5087).

5 hours later, - yes. At the 1.07M and 1.08M thresholds it was still going, but at 1.09M stopped.

It seems we have a prime for 55154*5^n+1.

I would bet a prime has been found for 243686*5^n-1. On the stat page it looks peculiar as it does not get new candiates to be tested.

5 hours later, - yes. At the 1.07M and 1.08M thresholds it was still going, but at 1.09M stopped.

Everyone needs to understand that even when the shutdown is automatic, there's still hundreds of other candidates already being processed, both above and below the n of the prime, or in the queue waiting to be processed. We're not going to cancel work that's already been generated. Do you *really* want to do several hours of calculations, find a 700-thousand digit prime number (even if it doesn't eliminate a k from the conjecture), and then have the task discarded and ignored by the server? Of course, you'd never even know you found a prime.

When we clear out other candidates, only candidates that have not yet been turned into BOINC workunits can be cancelled. If it's already in the queue, it's too late to stop it.

Also, the system will wait for a doublechecker before it removes any candidates. In the case you cited above, the double checker hasn't returned the work yet.

And, as I type this, there's a third prime. We're going to manually stop the remaining candidates in that k -- so the remaining work that you see for it is the absolute bare minimum that could possibly be sent out. Without manual intervention, the work would likely have continued to flow for hours or days, waiting for the double checker. (We just killed 551 candidates in the same k.)

I'll ask your next question for you: Why not program the server to kill the candidates after the first prime find, instead of waiting for the double checker? Especially if you can "un-kill" them?

There's a few reasons why we don't do that, at least not yet. Primarily, it's because the entire boinc system is designed not to look at the results until the quorum is met. We would need to start messing with some of the core BOINC server software to make that happen, or create some entirely separate system to 'peek' at the early results. Nothing's impossible, but this isn't trivial.

Another good reason is that false prime discoveries are more common than one would think.

One more thing to consider -- this time in favor of killing the candidates on the first prime find -- is that the SR5 deadlines are going to have to get longer after the challenge is over. It's important that the short projects be accessible to people running slow computers, and that includes SR5. 32 bit LLR seems to do base 5 calculations a lot slower than base 2, and the difference is much more pronounced than it is with llr64. So older slower 32 bit computers run SR5 a lot slower than their 64 bit counterparts. Add in rapidly growing task sizes as n increases, and then multiply that by 4 if a Riesel prime is found, and 3 days isn't close to enough. Longer deadlines make it more advantageous to kill the other candidates when the prime finder reports the prime rather than the double checker.

Just to give an example of this, I have an old T2450 Core Duo laptop running on the challenge (it will be back to PRPnet GFN65536 work after the challenge) that takes about 11 to 14 hours to do a work unit. Four times the longer of these times puts it well into the 3rd day, and that is with 24/7 crunching.

I'd guess that we'd probably need to be about a week for deadlines on SR5 for now, with an adjustment up as the n increases in a few months (or weeks if we keep crunching at a high rate).

I could have sworn I already answered this. Your C2D is still a relatively modern 64 bit CPU.

SR5 seems to be especially bad with 32-bit CPUs. My Sempron 3000+ took 40 hours to run an SR5 from the beginning of the challenge. The tasks are about 25% longer now, and if you then add in the overhead from finding a Riesel prime, you're looking at about 200 hours, running 24/7. As n goes up, that will increase.

I know, Mike. But you misread my post. The T2450 is not a C2D, it is a Core Duo, which is one of the fastest (and nearly last made) of the Intel 32-bit processors. Even it struggles under the current deadline without 24/7 crunching. I had no idea that the old Sempron would be that bad, but I actually suspect that it is because of the combination of the 32-bit issue with a relatively small cache (would be interesting to see celeron performance vs. Core Duo or Pentium M to examine the cache vs. 32-bit slow down). I have a Pentium M laptop (32-bit, lots of cache, 2.13GHz) that is doing current work in 10-11 hours, so I think it is the combination of low cache with 32-bit that really slows things down more so than either alone.

Oops, yes I misread that. Yes, I'm quite surprised at how poor the performance is on SR5. That machine does a LOT better on TRP. In fact, it's sort of astounding -- the Sempron takes nearly 2 days to do SR5, but can do the MUCH longer TRP calculation in just 4 days. (On my C2Q TRP is 7 times as long as SR5.)

Funny you mention Celerons -- I have a Celeron from about the same time and approximately the same clock frequency as the Sempron. I should take it out of mothballs and see how it does with SR5.

The more I think about it, the more I think it is the cache driving the poor performance. Your Sempron has probably 256k cache (I might be off here, I never dealt with the Sempron series much). The TRP workunits clearly take the Sempron beyond cache and into very slow regular RAM (PC-3200 stuff?). SR5 is big enough in this case to do the same thing, so the difference in slow down may not be that great (i.e., both are beyond cache and into regular RAM).

On the other hand, the Core2s have 2, 3, or 4mb of cache. SR5 is small enough still to stay completely within that, but on some of these, TRP might be enough to push into regular RAM, and thus, the much more extreme slowdown compared to the Sempron case.

The Celeron would be a nice comparison, especially since I have both Pentium M and a couple of old Pentium 4s that would likely match up for some comparisons (though the Pentium 4s will be gone in the next few weeks).

I'd say that makes sense, except for one thing: The raw, unadjusted credit formula, which can also be thought of as the predicted execution time formula, ALSO says TRP should be about 7 times slower than SR5, based on the length of the number. The C2D has the expected relative performance, which wouldn't be the case if SR5 was getting significantly fewer cache misses than TRP. On the other hand, the Sempron's performance doesn't fit the model very well.

I tried running a PPS task on an Atom -- once. It doesn't do LLR very efficiently.

You could finish this subproject in 1 day if you prove that 1396*5^n-1 and 6436*5^n+1 are composite for every n>=0

I have an AMD Athlon(tm) XP 1800+ [Family 6 Model 8 Stepping 1] under WinXP x86, and this CPU crunch SR5 around 60 hrs. The computer has DDR266 RAM. This CPU has 256 kb cache.

Another PC has AMD E-450 CPU under W7 x64, and it crunch the SR5 task around 18 hrs. The RAM is probably DDR3 (I don' know), and cache is 512 kb. Of course it has 2 cores, so the 18 hrs/task is per core.

C2D E8400 with ddr2@800 MHz crunch SR5 around 2.7 hrs.

So throughput is differ :-)

Indeed, I had originally intended to have my Sempron crunch SR5 long-term, but the performance is so bad I put it back on TRP.

And, in case anyone is wondering why I'm actually crunching with such an old computer, it's in the basement near the laundry room, so I can browse the web while doing the laundry. And it helps keep the basement warm in the winter.

That is the first prime found in Boinc so I did not see that sr5 project was leaved out.

I shall take this up with the other guys or guy involved in sr5 project.

It will be automatically after there are no more pending tasks. That's the way all the stats work.

Edit: After a request from Lennart to actually show the prime, I've added color on the line containing a prime regardless of the task count.

A sixth prime was found a few hours ago. It's a Riesel, making a total of 5 Riesels and 1 Sierpinski since the move to BOINC.

Of those 6, 4 have been confirmed and two (including the most recent) are still awaiting the double checks.

So far:

130484*5^1080012-1 found by Randy Ready on 17 June 2013
97768*5^987383-1 found by Ulrich Hartel on 17 June 2013
55154*5^1063213+1 found by Senji Yamashita on 16 June 2013
243686*5^1036954-1 found by Katsumi Hirai on 16 June 2013

(The others will be listed once they appear on the Top 5000 Primes list.)

Is this page still working? Not all of these new primes are showing up.

Also, what about 114986*5^1052966-1 and 119878*5^1019645-1?

The others will be listed once the double check is complete and they are submitted to the Top 5000 Primes list.

Yes. If you look at the pages on the top 5000 primes site, you'll see that their system has not yet verified two of the primes. I listed them here because there's no reason not to do so once they're on the Top 5K site, verified or not.

However, the process that puts the primes on that stats page DOES care whether the primes are verified on Top 5K, so they won't show up there until that happens. When that happens is out of our control.

Also, what about 114986*5^1052966-1 and 119878*5^1019645-1?

Those primes weren't found on PrimeGrid, so they shouldn't be in our system at all. However, we accidentally processed them, so they do show up in peoples' prime lists. (Serge as the prime finder, and the people who 'rediscovered' them here as the double checkers.) The same applies to the stats page. They really shouldn't show up there because they weren't discovered here, but they do because of the automatic process.

There are three simple searches that can help those who like to be a bit ahead of the confirmation curve:
1. http://primes.utm.edu/primes/search_proth.php?base=5&number=300&plus=y&minus=y ; then if interested in details, copy-paste specific primes in to the "Single" search form on the sidebar
2. http://primes.utm.edu/primes/status.php
3. http://primes.utm.edu/bios/page.php?id=768 and use "All of this project primes"

#1 is more powerful (because UTM Status page doesn't show InProcess primes from first-time proof-codes), but it will return some non-SR5 project primes. #3 will not work for the latest primes because they are not tagged with this project id.

We're doing a pretty decent job of advancing the leading edge and finding primes at the same time. Let's keep it up.

I guess I didn't notice before, but 4 out of 10 primes found by 1 person?!?! How lucky is that? I was not even lucky enough to be a double checker on any of them, let alone one person being the finder of 4 of them.

A 14th prime, a Riesel prime, has been found.

Hi Mike, do you mean a 14th Riesel-type prime has been found? We seem to already be on 15 primes from the subproject stats pages so I assume this is a new overall 16th prime.

There's 2 primes on the stats page that are double checks of primes found outside of PrimeGrid.

If you're asking why the proof code for the external SR5 project isn't included in the proof codes for recent primes, it's because A) unfortunately, that project is now defunct, and B) we're no longer relying on their sieve work. SR5 is now entirely a PrimeGrid project.

Quoting a message from February when you're talking about primes from June isn't very helpful. If you're asking why SierpinskiRiesel is no longer included in the proof code, I answered that in the last message. If you're asking about something else, please explain.

A 15th SR5 prime is in the pipeline and is currently being doublechecked. It's another Riesel (-1) prime.
