Dear owner of host 291937,
Please shut down your client until whatever is wrong with your computer is fixed.
You are singlehandedly slowing down the progress of PPS & SGS and disabling adaptive replication because all your work units get invalidated and therefore have to be triple-checked!
Please stop wasting everybodys (including your own) time and electricity!

@admins:
Could you please contact the owner of host 291937?
Maybe he/she is unaware what is happening...

BOINC is meant to be hearty for reasons such as this user. It's figured in the formulation of projects being crunched. Usually those hosts get shut down on their own in some period of time.

You may think it slows things down, but in reality those types of hosts strengthen the projects, BOINC and validation. Allowing then to process gives the programmers the ability to make sure that the work being validated is that much more precise.

I agree we could use less of them, but they will always be around. The admins here have on several occasions stated this same philosophy in their own way.

PPS will take forever, because there really is no end. SSG will finish at it's current level and may someday be pushed to the next level, depending on the priority of other projects.

So in that small world of the bad system, it's just best to let them roll. The user probably doesn't even visit the forums. Only about 15-20% of the crunchers ever read the forums.

I strongly disagree with your opinion.
This host (and similar ones in the past/future) are disruptive and cause waste in time and electricity.
Wheras most of PPS/SGS WU's have to be crunched only once (because of AR) with these hosts they are checked three times (1 bad result + 2 double-checkers)!
You cannot honestly believe that this doesn't constitute a waste of time and electricity!

I am not criticizing PG or BOINC but merely asking the owners of such rogue hosts to please disconnect their clients as soon as they notice this type of behavior until whatever problem with their computer is fixed.

That host was working fine just yesterday (click on "valid" work to check it).
Today is not a working day in many countries, so the owner might be away and most probably unaware of what is going on with is host.
If that is the case, this could happen to any of us.

I feel the need to straighten out a few things. I'm not as eloquent (or polite) as Mike, but here goes:

Adaptive Replication is not necessarily affected by someone like this. None of these tasks ever had AR turned on in the first place. Why? Because the host has such a poor recent track record. Any tasks that did run under AR were invalidated instantly. The only electricity this guy is wasting is his own.

All of us behind the scenes would much rather have a host that immediately fails tasks rather than one that grabs a bunch of tasks and never returns them. In the latter case we have to wait for the tasks to time out before they're resent.

We changed to the newest server code recently, but are still running the older (but almost new) validator because of the enormous number and complexity of changes required. Once I've got the validator updated, hosts like this that always fail will be restricted as to how many new jobs per day they can get. That number will never fall to zero though, as otherwise the host wouldn't get any work after being repaired.

Speaking of the validator, it's far more sophisticated than it used to be. Let's say we had two hosts that were returning broken results like this. Let's even say they're identical results. They wouldn't validate against each other. The code takes into account how long a task ran when making decisions.

Primegrid is running on a virtual host now. We're paying far less than we used to for a server that's much faster than what we had. A host like this puts no noticeable strain on our system. Maybe if there were 10,000 hosts like this it would, maybe not. In any case BOINC is built to handle this kind of thing without anyone needing to watch it.

We're not going to start setting any precedents by contacting the user involved. It's someone who's participated in 14 projects, been here three years and has ten badges. This host has almost 2.9 million credits - obviously it did work at one time. At some point the owner will figure out that this host is messing up and will either ask for help or fix it himself.

Can everyone please please stop worrying so much about the other guy? It'll all turn out OK in the end.

Unfortunately, I think you are wrong, in my opinion.
Let me explain in an example why I believe electricity & time is wasted (and not just for the rogue host)

A random PPS/SGS WU gets sent to rogue host (and because he obviously does not benefit from AR) and to another host.
As soon as both results get in the validator flags the WU because the results don't match.
Therefore the WU gets sent out a third time!
If not for the rogue host most PPS/SGS WUs would only have to be crunched once (because of AR).
The user crunching the WU for the 3rd time is essentially wasting his time/electricity since the WU would have been completed after the first correct result came in, if not for the rogue host...

Another thing: one might think that a lone host like this wouldn't do much "damage" but approximately 50% of all my work units are affected by it and I'm guessing it's similar for everybody crunching PPS/SGS...

Again, I am not criticizing PG or you admins (you are doing a superb job, IMO), not even the owner of the rogue host, he/she is in all likelihood not even aware what is happening.
I only meant to alert the owner of the situation.

You're saying that because of AR this wastes time and electricity? Awesome. Done. I'll turn AR off permanently. (Only kidding about turning it off. Mostly kidding, anyway.)

I personally think AR should be turned off on all of our projects. Everything we do should be double checked, 100% of the time. That's only my opinion -- but if push comes to shove, I can be pretty persuasive and probably make it happen. (Actually, we haven't really talked about it, but I think all of the current admins might also prefer to turn AR off.)

It would take all of about 30 seconds for me to make that change, and once that's done, the whole "wasted electricity" argument vanishes.

Like Jim, I'm pretty sick and tired of answering "This other guy IS RUINING EVERYTHING FOR EVERYBODY" types of posts. It's getting old, and Jim answered it so very eloquently and definitively:

Can everyone please please stop worrying so much about the other guy? It'll all turn out OK in the end.

I'm locking this thread, and further questions of this nature are going to also be locked or deleted. We've got REAL issues to address (including good things, not just bug fixes), and this type of discussion wastes valuable time. I prefer to let people have their say, but there's a limit. This question has been asked -- and answered -- many times. Asking again and again is not going to produce a different answer.
