Your voices have been heard!

Well, we always heard you, but this wasn't the easiest thing to fix.

Anybody who has ever run any LLR project here probably noticed how seemingly random the credit was. Without going into detail, the variation was due to using the BOINC benchmark * CPU time method for calculating credit, which has lots of problems.

I've written a new credit function that is based soley on the complexity of the problem, so credit will be a lot more consistent than before.

We'll be turning the new credit system on one project at a time. You may notice that some projects will get more credit than before, and some may get less. The adjustment is to make it so that you get the same credit/hour regardless of which project you're crunching.

Currently, the new system is being used only for SGS. If nothing really bad happens, we'll start turning it on for the other projects. SGS used to have a fixed credit. It now varies slightly according to the size of the number. VERY slightly -- the difference is about 8 places past the decimal point, so you won't notice the difference, but it's there.

This should correct the following inequities with the old credit function:

  • Identical Windows and Linux boxes scored differently on the BOINC benchmarks, and therefore got different credit for the same amount of work.
  • Sandy and Ivy Bridge CPUs got LESS credit for being faster.
  • Your wingmen would affect your credit, so if THEY have a Sandy Bridge CPU, you get penalized because their computer is fast.
  • Hyperthreading and the effects of too-small CPU cache can cause crunching to slow down when all cores are in use, causing credit to go up because your computer is slower.

I'll keep you informed as the other projects are moved to the new system.

UPDATE: All LLR projects now use the new credit system.

EDIT: Added fourth bullet point about HT & cache misses causing higher credit as your computer slows down.

PPS is now live on the new credit system.

Watching the validator do its thing, comparing the old and new credit formulas, I got to see just how bizarre the old formula was.

It's a lot worse than most people think. PPS is now getting about 48 or 49 credits; most of the WUs now have n ~= 1.6M, so the numbers are larger than SGS, which gets about 39 credits.

The old formula was spitting out credit as low as 0.00028 (!!!!) and as high as 100.

TRP is live.

Credit is currently about 1065.

Old credit was varying from 250 to 1800.

This is bad news. The spread sheet I use to decide which badge to go for next is now rubbish!

I guess I will have to do anther sweep of all projects to update my data.

Oh well, at least it will be really current then.

Good work all concerned.

This is great to have a work accomplished basis for credit.

Looking at PPS my standard cpus are seeing a slight increase in average credit. As I would have expected all my hyper-thread cpus are seeing a drop in average credits. I know HT was known for giving bad benchmarks.

Very good news.
It woul be nice if longer subprojects move to the new credit function asap. Otherwise, faster cpus will only crunch small WUs.

Very nice!!!!

While the new credit function personally hurts TheDawgz (PPS credit/wu dropped by 38%) we are doing back flips to see that the field is finally level.

CongRATulations!!!

Very good news.
It woul be nice if longer subprojects move to the new credit function asap. Otherwise, faster cpus will only crunch small WUs.

I'm working on it.

With the short WUs, there were literally hundreds coming in every minute, and therefore it was easy to test the new formula.

The big WUs don't come in very often, so testing will take longer. In the last three hours, for example, only one 321 WU has been validated.

This is bad news. The spread sheet I use to decide which badge to go for next is now rubbish!

I guess I will have to do anther sweep of all projects to update my data.

Oh well, at least it will be really current then.

Good work all concerned.

Would you be so kind to share your results when you're done?

Also good job for the guys who updatet the system! :)

Here is the Spreadsheet layout. You would need to adjust for your computer speed and number of processors as well as the new credit rates if you wanted to use mine which was never designed for publication. I seem to be unable to actually post a live spreadsheet.

Columns :- (Rows are n)
A Tasks {text$ of sub-project names}
B Done {Text$ of units done for each Task}
C Credit {Text$ of total credit for each Task}
D Av Cr/WU {Cn/Bn}
E Curr CR/WU {Text$ of reading of Av of recent Jobs}
F Time {Text$ of Av reading of recent times in sec per core}
G Time(Hour) {Fn/3600*cores}
H Credit/day {(24/Gn)*En}
I Units/day {1/(Gn/24)}
J Credit Rem {Credit for next Badge-Cn} =Credit remaining for badge.
K Jobs Rem {ROUNDUP(Jn/En)}
L Hours Rem {(Jn/En)*Gn}
M Days Rem {Ln/24}
N Notes {Text$} e.g. "Gold Aim", "Silver- Task ended"
O Expires {Text$} estimate of current expire life, e.g. 321LLR is 7
P Silver {Text$} for badges gained or {TODAY()+Mn} for next badge or {TODAY()+((Jn+Credit for badge level/En) *(Gn/24))
Q Gold as above
R Amethyst as above
S Ruby as above

I use colours to show level achieved in columns J..M, Blue for WU currently being chosen Green for ended projects and appropriate colours for P..S

I use Open office and expect it will work as given in Excel. It will take under an hour to set up and a life time of adjusting and trimming to be as you want it.

Just for curiosity, what is the formula? (If its simple, i wonder about some polinomial and multi-logaritmic expression...)
Is the algorithm 'writable' as a formula or is a complex algorithm?

Thanks

i.e:
how many credit for k*2^n+1? and for k*2^n-1? Is there a formula also to k^2^n+1?

Thanks!

It turns out to be rather simple.

PRPNet has a formula for assigning points to different numbers, and it seems to work well and we don't get a lot of complaints about it, so our new LLR formula starts with that formula (and thanks go to Rogue for this).

I'll spare you all the intermediate steps and formulas (I'll post them if anyone wants). The end-result is:

credit = digits ^ 2 * M-CCF * P-CCF;

Digits is calculated by the standard formula log10(k) + n * log10(b).

M-CCF is the Master Credit Correction Factor, and is used to adjust the raw formula to produce the correct credits per hour.

P-CCF is the Project Credit Correction Factor, and is used to adjust all the subprojects so that they all produce the same credit per hour. Each sub-project has a different P-CCF. This is how the formula is adjusted for the somewhat unpredictable effects of FFT size changes. It will likely need to be adjusted, over time, as the numbers grow.

The basis of the formula is that the run time increases proportionally to the square of the number of digits in the number. That's not perfect, but it's pretty good.

Nice clean up on the server side, removing 321 Sieve from preferences, etc.

Suggestion, now you have a formula would it be possible to show a mean of the credit being given on the preference page where the time is also shown? Unsure how much of a database hit that would be. Maybe run it once a week to keep it minimal.

Also maybe add a note that CUllen/Wooden Sieve work is currently unavailable?

Thanks for the nice work.

Be careful what you wish for springs to mind as I see my credits have dropped by around 30-40%. Luckily I'm not totally one of those things Michael got upset with me posting about last month.
Grumbles out of the way, it's nice to see this in place, well done. :-)

No changes have been made recently to the selection page. At some point, we'll remove the GCW sieve selection, but there's other far more important items on the to do list.

I'd be against showing the credit on that page, either as "credit per task" or "credit per hour". There would be ongoing, never-ending, and pointless discussions of "this project is getting 0.035% more credit than that project!".

The reason I say it's pointless is that such data is incomplete without also including a thorough analysis of the CPUs doing the crunching. It's a good bet that the average CPU speed on the long projects is greater than the average CPU speed on the smaller projects. This makes it very tricky comparing credit between projects. For example, I happily crunch along doing PPS, SGS, and TRP on my old 32 bit Celeron, but I'd never attempt to run SoB on it. Or PSP, CUL, WOO, GFN, or 321, for that matter.

Displaying that information would not be helpful. Trust me on this; I was trying to use this data while working on the new credit function, and ultimately decided it was useless for this very reason.

The only question that's really useful is "what's MY credit per hour on the different projects?" The goal is for those numbers to be as close to equal as possible. But that's only a useful question when talking about a single computer. Talking about all the hosts, in aggregate, isn't useful because there's a heterogeneous distribution of cpu types.

Michael,

Good points.

The 321 Sieve (or something else) has been somewhat recently moved, because on my task screen SGS and TRP (LLR) are now in the top line, instead of the second line. This was after the Valentines Day challenge. I made no font / zoom changes. If I would, I'd actually make them slightly bigger cause of my sight.

There's another change, the preferences are sorted by type and have a line between the types.

Mmm - tempting...

How masochistic am I feeling...

So sieving is unaffected by this yes?

Edit: actually the Mobile Celeron 2.5 is probably quicker than the 2.4 in the Optiplex (23 days on the mobile)...

Is this the same credit formula you've been using for races all these years? Conversely, will you be using this new formula for race credit as well as BOINC credit now?

No, and probably not.

It's not the same formula.

This formula is based on the amount of work to crunch the number, and is roughly n^2.

The challenge formula, "prime score", is the difficulty of finding a prime (it comes from the top 5000 website), and is roughly n^3.

Your second question also occurred to me. For the purpose of challenge scoring, the new credit formula, based on n^2, seems to be a better fit than the prime score formula, since the boinc challenges are based on work done, not primes found. For Tour de primes, the prime score is a better formula since that's just looking at primes.

I'm not sure if it's worth it to change the formula for challenges. Either formula will work since the numbers don't generally vary in size a whole lot. It's unlikely to affect the outcome, regardless of which formula is use. I don't think using this formula for challenges is a bad idea. There are just a lot of other things that need to be done that are either more urgent or more important, or both.

Is there a change in the credit function again? Since yesterday about 2.30 pm the credit for a PPSE wu dropped from about 21.30 to 18.00. I have a PPS wu with different credit for me and the wingman too:

I notice that the minimum quorum is 1 but initial replication is 2. Isn't that a little unusual?

Yes and no. From time to time, we do make minor adjustments to the credit function. It's impossible to exactly predict the performance of LLR as the numbers change size, so it does need to be looked at and adjusted periodically. We did such an adjustment on PPS/PPSE yesterday.

However, that doesn't explain why you would see a 15% drop; the adjustment to PPSE was very small. We'll look into it. Thank you for bringing it to our attention.

I notice that the minimum quorum is 1 but initial replication is 2. Isn't that a little unusual?

Indeed. We'll look into it. Thanks!

The credit for PPSE is back to where it should be. So is PPS credit, which was too high by the same amount.

The first result came back 18:08 late. The term "initial replication" is not all that well-chosen. When the first host missed its deadline, the number (called target_nresults in the database) was increased by the transitioner as part of sending out another task. Quorum remained at one - in other words both hosts were trusted and were getting the task under Adaptive Replication.
