I completed ~30 WU for the challenge with my GTX480 at stock clocks without a computation error.
After the challenge I tried a world record WU.
It was running about 4c warmer than the short tasks.

It had a computation error at 38 hours :(

Should I consider downclocking below stock clocks?

Your errors back in December were most likely caused by overclocking, but the one recent error was not. The error you got there was likely caused by insufficient available video memory following a restart of GeneferCUDA.

I'm hopeful that the next version of the software will use less memory and elliminate this problem.

EDIT: And to directly answer the question you pose in the title: Yes, they are, for a lot of different reasons.

Yeah, there was a high OC on the card prior to reading the thread for the challenge.

DO you think that was an uncommon error to run into? I'm not sure if I want to run the GPU for so long @ 80c if it is likely to fail midway through.

I know it is psychological, but it feels different to run the card at 80c vs 75/76c, especially for such long periods.

I am going on a small limb here with the comments already made. You are running some very large numbers on the processors at the same time as a WR. The error was a shared memory error. You are using all your processors (4) on the box. GPU likes to have a little bit of a CPU every so often and it may have tried to make a CPU call at a time the other 4 units were in an intense spot of calculation and refused to give up their spot.

I also believe the I5 is 2 processor plus HT. On my HT machines I have done a lot of experiments and with LLR it seems to run best with HT on, 50% processor and then the HT side can handle whatever I throw at it for other processes and feeding the GPU. Your mileage may vary, but it's what has kept me successful so far. I have actually done 1 WR unit on my very slow GPU, finished it and got credit, although it was reported several days after deadline. I now just run the short units.

Good luck with your quest.

That particular error has nothing at all to do with clock speeds or temperatures as far as I know.

For some people, it never happens, for others it happens EVERY time. For some, it only happens once in a while. As far as I can tell, it's caused by a combination of what else is running on the computer, configuration, and other similar conditions.

It appears to me that I am using 50% of the processors. The SOBs, running on all 4 cores were pushing temps into the mid 70's. I dropped to 50% CPU usage and now the CPU temps are ok.

It sounds like this may have been "just one of those things". After I work through the SOBs, I may change to just running PPS & SGS WUs on the CPU and try a WR Genefer WU.

Judging work by temps since they all show 100% CPU usage, those seem significantly less taxing. Hopefully I won't run into an error again.

You should see lower temps running any sieve application, as opposed to LLR. This is doubly true if you have a SB or IB CPU which supports AVX. LLR running with AVX runs even hotter.

It shouldn't make a big difference whether you're crunching a large number (SoB) or a small number (SGS) -- LLR-AVX is going to run about as hot as any program can run. (I could actually make an argument why crunching smaller numbers would run hotter than crunching larger numbers under certain conditions.)

This is the reason the very similar Prime95 program has historically been used as a stress test for CPU overclocking.

For now, on the CPU, the GFN program GenefX64 will run cooler than LLR because GenefX64 doesn't use AVX. That will change in the future when new GFN apps come online.

When I was running the Proth & Sophie Germain llrs (not seive, the only CPU running sieve is the AMD), I was getting CPU temps ranging from 57-62C. The SOB with all 4 cores was running 67-72C.

I do feel pretty confident in this OC as I have been running WUs nonstop since I broke my arm and everything is stable and cool (except for the SOBS).

For info I run an i5 as well, with a 680M GPU. I run 4 SGS at present but I have run other projets on 4 cores (i.e. with HT). I have had no problems with GFN short but WR take too long for me to have tried although I have heard of other similar systems having problems.

I find no advantage in leaving a core free for the GPU, others report better work rate with that being done. I think memory and memory type (GPU card memory, cache, CPU memory) variations may have a lot more to do with SOME errors than temperature, although I do not overclock myself. They also seem to have a major effect on WU time.

Look at me up this late.............

Been playing GTA.............

If you're that worried about temps try the GPU fans on fixed speed. If they're 70% now on variable, try fixed @ 75%.

Your errors back in December were most likely caused by overclocking, but the one recent error was not. The error you got there was likely caused by insufficient available video memory following a restart of GeneferCUDA.

I got another one of these errors after about 24 hours or crunching. The short tasks give me no problems. Is there way to try to avoid these errors?
I would like to crunch some world record WUs, but will be happy with the short tasks if that is all that I can crunch for some reason.

Also, the GPU was running 4C cooler with this WU than the previous one if that would have made any difference.

If it were me, and I could not see any obvious pattern such as "when I'm watching full screen video the CUDA task dies" (that's just an example; I'm not suggesting that's the cause), I would run the short tasks until we have new apps available. Something causes that problem on some systems but not others, and on yours it happens only sometimes.

My best guess, due to the pattern of where it's happening, is that it's somehow related to contention between the CUDA program and other programs or system components running on the computer, but that's just a guess. This problem, of course, never happens on a developer's computer.

The new Genefer app will use less memory (which may help), possibly use a much newer CUDA toolkit (which may or may not help), and will retry from a checkpoint following an error (which in your case definitely will help). Until that's ready, I'd play it safe and run the short tasks.

As Mike was saying a pattern. There are some virus scanners that will interfere with BOINC, so you may want to have your scanner not scan the BOINC directories.

There has been a couple reports that the video card going into sleep / power save mode may cause this on the newer version of the driver. Double check that you do not allow it to go to sleep/low power mode. This setting might be able to be set in several spots including Windows Screen Saver and NVidia control panel.

Just a couple of the many possibilities of what could be interfering.

Just got a real baby - quora 75:

http://www.primegrid.com/result.php?resultid=429959752

I'm sure I'l be able to do the honours ;).

Edit: actually the max quora is saying 60 - will it still fail? Is it non-completable? Shall I abort it? Does it need purging?
