Yes there are limits for the Genefer project. You can check them out in this post . You'll notice that every N has a different upper limit, and the limit also depends on which program you use.

For the LLR projects I think the only limit is how long you are willing to spend, though I'm not entirely sure about that.

You can use any programming language to write a program that can do primality testing, so yes you can use java to write a program that does the same as the currently available programs at PrimeGrid.

However, they are never going to be as fast as the ones we currently have. They have been optimized to use every possible CPU instruction we currently have available in some low level programming language.
