Hi
I've got a few machines running PPS/Sieve using ATI cards and they are massively slower than one with an nvidia 660ti (also running PPS/Sieve) - both on GPU.

eg for their 3371 credit they take:
4870X2: 12,000 - 14,000 seconds
6970/6990: 2,800s
7970: 2,100 - 2,900s
66ti: only 750s!!!

Probably I am missing something? Or does the cuda version run more efficiently? They all use 7.0.28 boinc and current graphics drivers (except the 4870x2 cause opengl causes it to fail).

Thanks, far

I have 4870X2. Was averaging 3150 sec/PPS Sieve WU. No longer used.
Upgraded to 7970 GHz Edition. My last PPS Sieve WU took 2250 seconds.
Your 4870X2 WU times look wrong. Is 400 Watts vs 220 Watts for the 7970 anyway, so consider just flogging or ditching it.
The NVIDIA cards use CUDA which is more optimised for this code path. The difference is not so great for other applications.

Thanks for the reply. The 6*** AMD cards have ended up on this project cause it is most stable for them (less lockups or bsod's). So unlucky for me it is so much less efficient.

I rechecked the 4870X2 and there is screen after screen all 12000-14000s so yeh bye bye to that card. No idea why it's so much more inefficient for me than your history :-(

Project Staging Area also has a couple of Prime Searches where you can use AMD cards. They are non-BOINC though good for getting PSA Badge.

I am running 2 6870's they average between 900 and 1200 sec.
but both cards together cost less than 2/3's of a gtx 660ti.
taken as one that would be 450 to 600 sec. per.

I suggest you load up msi afterburner to check gpu use,
if it is low turn off 1 cpu core per gpu to better feed the gpu,
they 800 or more times faster than cpu's.

with only 800 streaming cores ts card is at the low end of mid-range.

But 2 of these cards can run in a system with only a 650 watt power supply.

So yes trade up if you are ready, but find this puppy a home lots of people

have no gpu at all.

I take donation's LOL and am building a second machine out of my junk box,

I already have an under powered hd5770 it could use a little brother.

an extra 30 to 50 k rac out of leftovers will be nice.

I am running 2 hd68700's running PPS/Sieve at 530/560 sec.

your 4870 should take about twice a long as 1 of my 6870's

I recommend you load msi afterburner to check gpu use,if it is not near

100%, then try disabling 1 cpu per gpu card.

Currently boinc/primegrid client disable's 1 cpu to feed my 2 gpu's,

your gpu may be starved for data and so run's slow.

sorry after looking agin it is more like 2300 seconds,

still it will get me a rac over 200,000.

my 2 cards together would be 1150 sec,

maybe not 750 but I only spent $220 for both not $400.

I run a 6950 and have the cpus set to 99% so it leaves one free. Best way to run it with some applications. Only made a moderate difference sieving here though. MW@home makes a huge diff. That lil bit of extra free cpu power can make a difference. I have 8 cores so 7 run cpu tasks while 1 does everything else ;) lol

I cannot find them. Could you give more information as I will be at Ruby PPS SV in a few months and would like something to get other badges on my AMD. Please be explicit as I have tried three times to run PSA without being able to get it working.

Hi DaveB,
OpenCL applications can run on both AMD and Nvidia GPUs (if the card is new enough).
Considering AMD GPUs only, and as per this post:
http://www.primegrid.com/forum_thread.php?id=4713#60396
On BOINC there is PPS-Sieve (for PPS sieve badge)
On PRPNet there is Wieferich (for PSA badge)
In manual sieving there is PPS/RSP and Factorial (for PSA badge)
The Wall-Sun-Sun search on PRPNet should also work but has some error on AMD cards that hasn't been debugged yet.

For more info on how to conduct Wieferich Search start here:
http://www.primegrid.com/forum_thread.php?id=3008&nowrap=true#45945

For more info on Factorial Sieving start here:
http://www.primegrid.com/forum_thread.php?id=630

For more info on PPS/RSP Sieving head over to here:
http://primesearchteam.com/showthread.php?t=24
You need to create a login to access the Prime Search Team forums.

Just post on those forums if you try and still need help getting started.

P.S. Hope you had a good Australia Day yesterday! Fireworks in Perth were the best I've ever seen.
