We are seeing an elevated error rate from hosts using Nvidia drivers 295.xx.

If your monitor is put to sleep by the computer, the GPU is no longer available as a CUDA device. This will cause an immediate failure of any CUDA WUs. This includes GFN/Genefer, PPS Sieve, GCW Sieve, and llrCUDA.

In the mean time we can only suggest not to upgrade to this version (or downgrade if already installed), or disable power saving in the system.

We will update once we have more information.

One suggestion seen on another thread was to set the monitor to run always and manually press the off switch when not in use.

It will solve the problem and cut your power bills (by a tiny bit).

Units on one of my PCs (with a GTS 450) were already erroring before I installed the latest Nvidia drivers.
Another machine with a GTX560ti has had no problems at all.
Is the problem card specific ?

It is not something we can fix, it is a problem caused by Nvidia and so it has to be fixed on their end. Please note that not only PG, but also other projects that run CUDA are affected.

There's a lot of confusion going on right now because AT LEAST THREE DIFFERENT PROBLEMS have all popped up at the same time. As a result, there's a lot of "No, that can't be the problem!" going on because, well, that's true. For any one person it's entirely possible to be affected by some, but not all of the problems.

Here's a brief summary of what's going on:

1) The Nvidia 295 problem discussed in this thread.

2) An unrelated problem with GCW Sieve WUs. The best discussion of that can be found in The Leap Day Challenge thread within the Number Crunching topic.

3) An unrelated problem with PPS Sieve WUs. The best discussion of that can be found in the Faulty batch PPS_Sr2 W.U.s thread within the Proth Prime Search topic.

I hope that helps!

Moderator comment: hidden quote, corrected typo in sieve name.

Looks like my notebook is doing this. Could someone verify? I just want to verify its the driver and not my notebook, cuz this notebook is about to get sent under factory warranty due to faulty lights. And I'd like to tell Asus to look at this too if it's not the driver.

It's never possible to tell you that your laptop's errors were definitely due to this error, but it does look like it. Both the Genefer and PPS WUs genererated the error that you would receive when you are experiencing this problem.

Your PPS Sieve WUs show this error:

In both cases, that's what the application shows when there's no usable GPU. The driver problem causes the GPU to be unavailable, so the driver problem WILL cause the errors that you're seeing.

The difficulty lies in the fact that there's multiple things that can cause these symptoms. Using Windows Remote Desktop to log into the computer will cause the exact same error as the driver does, for example.

So it looks like the driver is your problem, but there's no way to tell for sure without watching the computer. If the WUs die when the computer blanks the screen, then that's the problem.

In any event, this problem is not a defective computer; it's a software problem. You either need older drivers, or need to change the settings so the computer doesn't blank out the screen.

If you're crunching, you probably not running on batteries anyway (at least not for long!!!), so turning off the screen blanking while running on wall power should be all you need to stop the problem. Then set BOINC to not crunch when running on batteries.

New information:

The problem only affects CUDA programs when they first start running. Putting the monitor into sleep mode while CUDA is running does not kill in-progress WUs. It only prevents new WUs from starting.

That's really good news.

Also, the problem is being looked at by Nvidia.

I read on the GPUGRID forum that, according to what they read on the SETI forum, there's nothing in the changelog regarding the CUDA problem and that the driver does not fix this problem.

They released a 296 driver, but did not address the CUDA/monitor sleep problem.

If you are running 296 or 295 on Windows, it's strongly recommended that you set your power settings to never turn the monitor off. That should prevent the problem from manifesting itself. Otherwise, any BOINC CUDA task (from anywhere) that tries to start or restart while the monitor is powered down will fail.

I did put code into the 1.07 version of Genefer to wait for up to an hour before aborting if it detects this condition, so if the monitor is asleep for only a short while, Genefer might be able to recover. I think the sieves may have similar code as well.

That's certainly good news. It will be interesting to see if there are any changes in speed with the 301 drivers (good or bad).

It will be even better news when Nvidia's automatic updater starts pushing 301 to everyone. Right now it's still in beta.

On Geforce 560 Ti ( Nvidia 301 drivers) there is no speed difference vs 295 or 296 drivers.
Like some series of drivers before this driver eats memory ( 941 vs 988 MB free) on 1 GB card.

I set my screen to never power off, and am still getting errors. I have a dual-SLI setup of GTX-570's w/2.5gb and the 296.10 driver.

I just reread the GPUgrid link and noticed that you must not have a screen-saver active, either, as that too will cause problems. I checked and ... yup, my screensaver was set to kick in after about an hour. I flipped it off and will wait to see if the remaining WU's in my queue will generate errors.

You have a different problem.

You're getting the error that happens due to overclocking, but your cards aren't overclocked.

However, heat is often a significant factor in this error, and people have found that lowering the memory clock sometimes helps. You might want to try that, as well as opening up the GPUs and cleaning out the heatsinks with some compressed air.

Hi all,

I'm using this:

NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560 (1024MB) driver: 29573
.. and this ..
NVIDIA GeForce GTX 550 Ti (1024MB) driver: 29610

Both card's running nicely so far..

@Michael:
Could problems also occur due to SLI setup ??

From taw_2015:
"I set my screen to never power off, and am still getting errors. I have a dual-SLI setup of GTX-570's w/2.5gb and the 296.10 driver."

What do you think ?

@Michael:
Could problems also occur due to SLI setup ??

As you probably know, dual GPU systems run hotter than single GPU computers, especially the top card. Since heat is a factor in causing errors, yes, dual GPU configurations are more prone to errors than an otherwise identical configuration with only one GPU.

However, heat is often a significant factor in this error, and people have found that lowering the memory clock sometimes helps. You might want to try that, as well as opening up the GPUs and cleaning out the heatsinks with some compressed air.

It's a brand new system, less than a week out of the box. Doubtful it has enough dust to fill a mouse-finger-sized thimble yet.

Regardless of the cause, you're seeing errors that are indicative of over heating, over clocking, or faulty hardware.

If it were me, what I would do is pull the bottom GPU out and see if the top GPU works fine. If it does, then SWAP the GPUs, removing the top GPU and putting the bottom GPU into the top slot and see if it works fine.

If both fail alone in the top slot, repeat the process in the bottom slot. If they only fail in the top slot then it's the motherboard.

If both work individually in the top slot, then leave the top slot open and try both of them individually in the bottom slot. If both work in the top slot and fail in the bottom slot, then it's the motherboard.

If both work individually in both slots, then it's probably not the motherboard and both GPUs are ok. It could still be a MB problem, or it could be heat, or it could be the power supply.

Rule out heat first by crunching with both GPUs with the case open, a desk fan blowing cold air into the computer, and both GPU fans manually set to run at 100%.

If it works like that, then the problem is heat and you need to do something to make the system cooler.

If it's still failing, the problem is likely the power supply, or possible the motherboard. Swapping parts in and out is possibly the only way to continue diagnosing at this point.

That's not a full decision tree for every possible scenario, but it should be enough to give you an idea how to start diagnosing the problem. Probably the easiest thing to check is the last step to just make the computer as cool as possible and see if the problem goes away. So start there.

QUADRO/TESLA DESKTOP DRIVER RELEASE 304 (305.93, in fact) is fine, too, I suppose?
