Welcome to The Leap Day Challenge

What to do with an EXTRA day in the year??? One could take a nap, read a book, go skiing/walking/hiking/swimming/etc, spend time with family, watch your favorite movie...and the list goes on and on. :) However, what your computer can do with an extra day is easy...come join the Leap Day Challenge, a 24 hour Challenge offered on PrimeGrid's Cullen/Woodall (Sieve) application.

Also, this will most likely be the last Challenge on the CW Sieve for quite some time. "Optimal" sieve depth is closing in and the project will be "suspended" within the next 6 months...if not sooner. If you're wanting to improve your badge level, now's the time to do it. ;)

To participate in the Challenge, please select only the Cullen/Woodall (Sieve) project in your PrimeGrid preferences section. Also, set "Send work from any subproject if selected projects have no work" to no to guarantee that no other work will be sent. The Challenge will begin 29 February 2012 18:00 UTC and end 1 March 2012 18:00 UTC. Application builds are available for the following:

  • Microsoft Windows (98 or later) running on an Intel x86-compatible CPU 1.01
  • Microsoft Windows (98 or later) running on an Intel x86-compatible CPU 1.12 (cuda23)
  • Microsoft Windows running on an AMD x86_64 or Intel EM64T CPU 1.12
  • Linux running on an Intel x86-compatible CPU 1.12
  • Linux running on an Intel x86-compatible CPU 1.12 (cuda23)
  • Linux running on an AMD x86_64 or Intel EM64T CPU 1.12
  • Linux running on an AMD x86_64 or Intel EM64T CPU 1.12 (cuda23)
  • Mac OS 10.3 or later running on Motorola PowerPC 1.12
  • Mac OS 10.4 or later running on Intel 1.12
  • Mac OS 10.4 or later running on Intel 1.12 (cuda32)
  • Mac OS 10.5+ running on an Intel 64-bit CPU 1.12
  • Mac OS 10.5+ running on an Intel 64-bit CPU 1.12 (cuda32)

Note: 64 bit CPU builds benefit from a 1.7X speed advantage over 32 bit CPU...so 1.7X the credit. :)

Recommendation: The Cullen/Woodall (Sieve) application requires a one time download of a 15MB sieve file. Please consider running a few Cullen/Woodall (Sieve) WU's before the Challenge begins so your client will already have the sieve file. This way, bandwidth can be used to deliver WU's instead of the sieve file. :) Thank you!

Time zone converter:

The World Clock - Time Zone Converter

NOTE: The countdown clock on the front page uses the host computer time. Therefore, if your computer time is off, so will the countdown clock. For precise timing, use the UTC Time in the data section to the left of the countdown clock.

Scoring Information

Scores will be kept for individuals and teams. Only work units issued AFTER 29 February 2012 18:00 UTC and received BEFORE 1 March 2012 18:00 UTC will be considered for credit. Since this is a fixed credit project, we'll be using cobblestones for scoring.

Credit is currently set at 364.43 cobblestones per WU.

About the Cullen/Woodall Prime Search

The Cullen/Woodall (Sieve) supports both the Cullen and Woodall Prime Searches.

    About the Cullen Prime Search

Cullen Numbers are positive integers of the form Cn = n*2^n+1, where n is also a positive integer greater than zero. Cullen numbers that are prime are called Cullen primes.

The Cullen numbers Cn are primes for the following n:

    1, 141, 4713, 5795, 6611, 18496, 32292, 32469, 59656, 90825, 262419, 361275, 481899, 1354828, 6328548, 6679881 and composite for all other n less than 9300867.

The Prime Pages keeps a list of the Top 20 Cullen Primes.

    About the Woodall Prime Search

Woodall Numbers (sometimes called Cullen numbers 'of the second kind') are positive integers of the form Wn = n*2^n-1, where n is also a positive integer greater than zero. Woodall numbers that are prime are called Woodall primes (or Cullen primes of the second kind).

The Woodall numbers Wn are primes for the following n:

    2, 3, 6, 30, 75, 81, 115, 123, 249, 362, 384, 462, 512, 751, 822, 5312, 7755, 9531, 12379, 15822, 18885, 22971, 23005, 98726, 143018, 151023, 667071, 1195203, 1268979, 1467763, 2013992, 2367906, and 3752948 and composite for all other n less than 9858288.

The Prime Pages keeps a list of the Top 20 Woodall Primes.

What is sieving?

Sieving is the first step to prime finding. In general, a sieve separates wanted/desired elements from unwanted material using a tool such as a mesh, net or other filtration or distillation methods. The word "sift" derives from this term. (Wikipedia - Sieve)

In PrimeGrid's case, the desired elements ultimately are prime numbers and the unwanted material are composite numbers. Our tool of choice for the CW sieve is Geoff Reynolds' gcwsieve and Ken Brazier's GPU port of CWPSieve. They eliminates possible candidates by removing numbers that have small factors. As this process is much faster than primality testing, it is good to thoroughly sieve a data set before primality testing.

Sieving removes many candidates at the beginning. However, the deeper the sieve goes, the slower the rate of removal, till eventually sieving removes candidates at the same rate as primality testing. This is sometimes referred to as "optimal depth". Primality testing is recommended at this point.

There are many factors that determine how much time and how deep to sieve. After sieving, all the remaining candidates must be primality tested to determine their "prime" status.

If you think about it you are working for free that day, if you don't get paid by the hour like me. :(
That's the way I look at it anyway...

On the other hand, if you decide not to work on that day, because your not getting payment for it, you will get less that week/month than you would on a 'regular' week/month.

Read the third paragraph of the post that started this topic, the one that starts with "To participate in the Challenge...". If you do what that says, you're participating in the challenge. There's no signing up for it; everyone who crunches the appropriate Work Units is in the challenge.

It's important to note that in order to be counted for the challenge, the WUs must be downloaded AND returned during the challenge. WUs downloaded before the start of the challenge do not count, and WUs returned after the end of the challenge do not count.

Have fun and good luck!

So i went ahead and downloaded a couple of WUs so that it would download the sieve file which went fine but now i am noticing the time left on each is over 10 days. Is that normal for this sieve project?

As with ANY BOINC project, anywhere, never trust the estimated remaining time that BOINC calculates. Compare the percentage complete vs. the elapsed time to get an estimate of how long it will actually take.

Leap day??? What leap day?

Why start the Leap day challenge at 18z when the leap day is almost over?

For a quarter of the world it is already 1 March by then, including Japan, Australia, New Zealand, all the south east Asia countries, half of Russia, China and the Pacific Ocean nations.

Here in Queensland it STARTS at 0400 hrs on 1 March and dos'nt finish until the 2nd of march!

I say again why start it at 18z???

Good luck to all in the challenge.

Been running these CW sieve work units for a couple of days now seemingly no problems but now on three machines the work unit error out just after downloading it. I check with a couple of wingmen and they all seems to be erroring out also.

Running Windows7 on these machine with a i7 processor, 2 with a ATI card and 1 with a nvidia card. Any suggestions?

The problem might have been fixed but I just download 9 work units and once again they all errored out. Will not allow any more work units and will try in the AM to get some more and will see what happens.
Perhaps you can check my work units as my computers are opened to all.

I was going to report this problem as I could not figure out why.

Also been running some CWsieve tasks for couple of days.
Both CPU & GPU tasks start crashing on some of my computers since last night.

Will try again later. Thank you!

So ... we will be running these 3x duration/score tasks during the challenge?
My Pentium III, Pentium 4 HT(s), Celeron D(s) can rest for a day if so.

You both should read this thread.

Perhaps you should read all threads.

There was a falsely CW-batch created yesterday evening.
A lot of those tasks crashed directly on the CPU and are returned into the queue and will crash again when send out.

Another problem with the new batch with longer running tasks is that the admins forgot to increase the estimated runtime.
On my GT240 GPU they all crash after 27 minutes and 43 seconds elapsed time.

Oddly enough, I do, and I'm aware of the CW-specific problems. As are, I suspect, the two people to whom I was replying since they took the time to post here about the problem.

There's not much point in telling them what they already know.

The 295 driver problem, however, may be a new one to some people because it may have been installed automatically on their computers by the Nvidia downloader.

Before posting, btw, I checked that both people were running the 295 driver. It's not a certainty that they were aware that this *might* be the cause of at least some of their problems.

I also took the time to check their WUs before posting.

It is possible that the WUs were bad. It could also be the drivers causing the problem. At least one of the two of them definitely has WUs that had computation errors that were caused by no CUDA devices being available, which is the symptom you get when affected by the 295 driver glitch. Those are absolutely not caused by bad WUs. Hence my pointing them in the direction of the information on the driver problem, because it's likely to be of use to at least one of them.

(The driver isn't the only thing that can cause that error. Using Remote Desktop to connect to the computer will cause the same problem, for example.)

I've been crunching GCW WUs on my CPU (no CUDA-able card) for a couple of weeks now, coincidentally to the challenge - the runtimes used to be consistently ~5 hours 15 mins on my Core 2 @ 2.33GHz. Suddenly they've jumped to ~16 hours, and the estimated "time remaining" for one WU which is yet to start is 40 hours. I know BOINC can be terrible at accurately estimating the time remaining for a WU, but it's been accurate with regards to what I've just reported. I've not changed anything regarding my system setup.

Have the WUs just changed in length because of the challenge? If so then it's a bit strange that they jumped from 5, to 16, to 40 hours, and nobody else has said anything... it feels like a problem at my end but nothing else seems affected and I've never had any problems with BOINC or PrimeGrid before.

Message 50505 - Posted: 26 Feb 2012 | 15:58:58 UTC - in response to Message 50502.

I know BOINC can be terrible at accurately estimating the time remaining for a WU, but it's been accurate as far as what I've just reported.

I had to increase them by 3x because they only take ~2min on a fast GPU.

~16 hours should be your new norm for the Challenge. I suspect the 40 hour estimate will correct itself once the task starts processing.

So as a 24 hour challenge, this has now become an essentially GPU only challenge...<sigh>

And any word on the max elapsed time problem? I have a mixed dual-GPU install in which one is working fine with the new longer work and the other is getting the max error. I have already lost 20+ hours of work due to this. Would have been nice to have a little bit of notice of the change. :(

one wu is sieving 10G-13G and takes 3 min
That means 10G-19G will take 9 min.

GOOD question, with a simple answer.

Sieves are very different than LLR. With an LLR WU, the whole thing is one big indivisible calculation.

A sieve, however, is only a portion of a large calculation. Changing the size of the WU merely changes the size of the chunk you're processing.

For example, I'm manually sieving the GFN numbers, as are other people. Right now I'm processing a "WU" that ranges from 1820P-1825P. So the size of my "WU" is 5P. (Those numbers are examples). If I wanted to do a "WU" that was twice as long, I'd sieve from 1820P-1830P.

Make sense?

EDIT: 20 seconds??? You beat me by 20 seconds??? Grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr :)

Lennart (or Rytis),

Could you also increase the rsc_fpops_bound?

Many of us with slower cards are suffering from 'Maximum elapsed time exceeded', because tasks are running into that error since the run time tripled.

To be exact, the WU went from a range of 120G's to a range of 360G's...and the credit from 364.430 to 1093.430.

Could you also increase the rsc_fpops_bound?

fpops was also adjusted...so further investigation is needed.

Leap day??? What leap day?

Why start the Leap day challenge at 18z when the leap day is almost over?

I say again why start it at 18z???

Good question...and if brought up a month ago, it would have been adjusted back 1 day. However, it's too late now. :)

fyi, 18:00 UTC is the standard start time for all Challenges excluding the solstices. Moving the Leap Day Challenge to the 28th at 18:00 UTC would have been quite easy.

Once again I download 9 work units and 8 of them error out.

and

I was going to report this problem as I could not figure out why.

Also been running some CWsieve tasks for couple of days.
Both CPU & GPU tasks start crashing on some of my computers since last night.

If this is the case how long before the bad work units are out of the system? Just downloaded 53 work units and 17 errored out. Computer is always on

Could you also increase the rsc_fpops_bound?

fpops was also adjusted...so further investigation is needed.

Okay, the only machine where I am seeing this issue is a dual GPU box with a 9800GTX and an 8800GS installed. Both previously ran fine before the time increase, respectively with about 550s and about 910s work times. Now, the 9800GTX completes work in a bit more than 1600 secs as expected, but the 8800GS drops all of its work at almost exactly 2588s with the max elapsed time error.

I have computation errors with CPU CW tasks.
I don't have errors with CPU+GPU tasks.
In the PrimeGrid preferences only Cullen/Woodall Prime Search (Sieve) is allowed.

Win 7 64bit, Intel Q6600, Nvidia 560 Ti (285.38).

ATTENTION!!!

We have discovered the issue with CPU work and it's not good. Please disable your CPU's from getting CW Sieve work as the sieve depth has exceeded the limit of the gcwsieve application.

More details to come.

Are you referring to the shorter tasks with higher credit? If so, then those should not have gotten those credits. They slid in through the back door. If you wish, we can deduct them from your account. ;) only a joke...

[edit] Also, here's a post about task length and credit if you missed it earlier.

ATTENTION!!!

We have discovered the issue with CPU work and it's not good. Please disable your CPU's from getting CW Sieve work as the sieve depth has exceeded the limit of the gcwsieve application.

More details to come.

Only 24 hour challenge?
It is Leap Day somewhere on the earth for 48 hours.
24 hours just West of the International Date Line, followed by another 24 hours just East of it.

I know, 18z is the standard start/end time. But think of all the "one day" records PG would break! :-p

And here are the details.

With Ken's help, and a review of Geoff's old site, it has been determined that only the 64 bit builds of gcwsieve have exceeded their max p limits of 2^51. All the rest have a limit of 2^62 which is well beyond anything we'll reach (and well beyond optimal sieve depth for our current range).

Therefore, all the 32 bit builds of gcwsieve have been re-enabled. Currently they are not set up to go to 64 bit hosts. We are reviewing whether to do that now.

The reason we are reviewing the above is because Ken has provided a 64 bit linux build of his cwpsieve. It's currently being tested. We'd need Windows and MacIntel also. If we're not able to get all these built, tested, and implemented, then the Challenge will be run with the 32 bit builds.

This is the best we can offer at this time. As more information becomes available, I'll update.

Leap Day Challenge - Just for Fun!

The Leap Day Challenge is now "Just for Fun". There are too many obstacles to overcome in such a short time span. I would say that the past 6 days has been a comedy of errors, but there's nothing fun about what has happened, and the tails we've chased attempting to figure things out have been many.

  1. 21 February - Nvidia 295.73 Driver
Nvidia released the production 295.73 driver. In short, there's a sleep issue. More information available in this thread.
  2. 24 February - Work generation script
In preparation for my departure, and to help ease the daily maintenance at PG, the work generation scripts were automated. In the process, a change in the fpops calculation caused faulty tasks to go out. This was quickly addressed and appeared resolved which led to the next move.
  3. 25 February - Task length increased
The CW tasks were less than 5 minutes on fast GPU's. With the upcoming Challenge, this would have overwhelmed the server. Therefore, task lengths were tripled...credit was tripled...and fpops was tripled. Unfortunately, the tripling of fpops was not enough for some of the cards and the reason is still unclear why. However, fpops has now been increased 9x's the original and, although less accurate, appears to have resolved the issue.
  4. 26 February - 64 bit GCWsieve app max sieve depth discovered
The 64 bit GCWsieve app was discovered to have reached its max sieve depth of approximately 2^51. 32 bit GCWsieve and GPU CWPsieve have a max of approximately 2^62. Ken was able to provide a 64 bit Linux build of CWPsieve and it has tested well. However, the Windows and MacIntel builds will not be available for the Challenge. The timing for this could not have been worse...well, maybe if it occurred during the Challenge. :(

Combining all 4 of those issues above has created so much havoc the last 6 days that it was prudent that the Challenge be "changed". There are simply too many hosts affected to run a "fair" Challenge.

I'm sure there will be many disappointed on both sides of the fence, so please let me extend my apologies all around.

Certainly not the flat note I wanted to depart on but still, one that was born out of necessity. As it stands now, there are 8 official Challenges that count towards the yearly Challenge series. At a later date, if conditions are right, a 9th Challenge (24 hour one) may be created as a "make up" to this.

The Leap Day Challenge will still be offered, stats will be provided, but only on a "Just for Fun" basis.

Ooohh, ooohh sir! sir!

We know one. Aggie's birthday. 4 April. Just the day to squeeze in a cheeky GPU challenge while the CPUs are busy on the PRPNet Aggie's Birthday challenge.

Did we mention it was Aggie's birthday on 4 April?

I heared some rumors about something on the 4th of April, but I don't know exactly what is was ;)

Too bad for all that the challenge is cancelled (at least no challenge credit) but for me it's not so bad since my cow is RMA. I hope to be there when the challenge is rescheduled.

John, you don't work at Nascar, do you? Their luck seems to be the same as yours over the past couple of days.

(For those who have NO clue what I'm talking about, my DVR unintentionally recorded part of the Daytona 500 Monday evening when it should have been recording "House". The race (which should take about 4 hours to run), should have started Sunday afternoon. First the race was delayed by rain. Then there was a crash that stopped the race on the second lap. The really interesting stuff hadn't even started yet: 158 laps later, under a caution flag, a car suffered a mechanical breakdown and crashed into a safety truck which was drying the track. The "dryer" was a trailer with a jet engine (running) and 200 gallons of jet fuel. The resulting explosion and fire was spectacular, causing damage to the road surface, and they had not yet resumed the race by midnight as Monday turned into Tuesday. Nobody was seriously hurt.)

Murphy's law: Anything that can go wrong, will go wrong.

Murphy was an optimist. Sometimes, everything that can go wrong, will go wrong.

Thanks, John, for sorting it all out. Sometimes stuff just happens. Much of this was out of your control, and much of it was completely unexpected. The effort by all involved to diagnose and correct all the problems is appreciated.

I heared some rumors about something on the 4th of April, but I don't know exactly what is was ;)

Too bad for all that the challenge is cancelled (at least no challenge credit) but for me it's not so bad since my cow is RMA. I hope to be there when the challenge is rescheduled.

Arjant, "just for fun" we still throw down the gauntlet to you and the herd :)

You can throw anything you want at me, I will be at a safe distance ;)
But I will be back at the next GPU challenge, and I hope with some reinforcement.

How to Join the Challenge

UPDATE: This is not an official Challenge...it's Just for Fun! See here for an explanation why.

To participate in the Challenge, please select only the Cullen/Woodall Prime Search (Sieve) project in your PrimeGrid preferences section.

  • Linux running on an Intel x86-compatible CPU 1.12
  • Linux running on an Intel x86-compatible CPU 1.12 (cuda23)
  • Linux running on an AMD x86_64 or Intel EM64T CPU 1.12 (cuda23)
  • Mac OS 10.3 or later running on Motorola PowerPC 1.12
  • Mac OS 10.4 or later running on Intel 1.12
  • Mac OS 10.4 or later running on Intel 1.12 (cuda32)
  • Mac OS 10.5+ running on an Intel 64-bit CPU 1.12 (cuda32)

Recommendation: The Cullen/Woodall (Sieve) application requires a one time download of a 15MB sieve file. Please consider running a few Cullen/Woodall (Sieve) WU's before the Challenge begins so your client will already have the sieve file. This way, bandwidth can be used to deliver WU's instead of the sieve file. :) Thank you!

Time zone converter:

The servers are located in the Northern Hemisphere; therefore, we'll observe summer. However, the Southern Hemisphere will be experiencing the Winter Solstice.

Credit is currently set at 1093.43 cobblestones per WU.

What to expect at Challenge start

The server always gets hit hard at the beginning of the Challenge. However, Cullen/Woodall (Sieve) tasks are quite long so we don't expect a heavy load. Nevertheless, a few hours before the start (29 February 2012 18:00 UTC) "max cache" will be dropped. Additionally, "max to send" will be dropped. Anyone attempting to request more will be met with "max cache" messages.

We'll raise the front page buffer before the start of the Challenge. These settings will be adjusted as necessary. Afterwards, as conditions allow, we'll raise "max cache". We'll continue to increase "max cache" when the server can handle it.

This method allows the greatest opportunity for the most clients to get work. Even if it's just 1 task for the first few minutes, at least the client is crunching. Past Challenges have shown that clients have an excellent chance to reach "max cache" before their first task is complete. We expect the same this time.

Sorry for being impatient, but are the stats going to be shown for the non-challenge?

have a look at the front page below the counter: there are the links to user and team stats (both are filled since 18:30)

Ok. Thanks. It seemed to take longer than usual to show up.

I guess all the dutch cows are more interested in the friendly soccer match against england.
Only one lost cow on the scoreboard at this moment.

Hmmm,
24h challenge with units who takes 30h on my Atlon 4200 and around 12h with my Phenom... maybe better to make a 2 day challenge with it.

They take only a few minutes on a GPU, or at least they did before the size was tripled to protect the server. Nobody who is using a CPU to crunch these will come anywhere close to the top of the leaderboards.

With such a huge difference in processing times, it's difficult trying to devise a plan that will satisfy everyone.

Two things, I have been running Cullen/Woodall (Sieve) WU for the past week with no problems with the 295.73 drivers. The WU's belt out at 5:30 min. per GPU (got two GTX 570's).

This challenge is open to everyone, right.....why is it that I am not listed anywhere. I usually do 500+ WU's per day. So how is this scored, am I missing something?

You are listed, but your credit is not. That's really odd.

Look at the end of the users stats page:

http://www.primegrid.com/challenge/2012_2/top_users.html

Only Wu's downloaded after 18h00 UTC will count.

You are aware that this is a "Just for fun challenge", aren't you?
Now that I think of it, all challenges are "just for fun". The difference is that this one will not award "challenge credits".

I hope everyone here is to crunch until the end!

Hello Michael,
i don't want to end at the Top from leaderboard.... but it would be fine if People who don,t have any Nvidia GPU where able to finish ONE unit per core in a 24h challenge.
I make this machine free for the challenge... for nothing.
Why they select such long units for a 24h challenge ? There are enough shorter ones.
Taking part is everything... but not in this way.

my units are running in just over 5 minutes, that's not exactly a long time. Times change and CPUs are obsolete as far as this type of sieving is concerned.

There are enough challenges for CPU's, only 2 GPU challenges a year, so I don't see the problem. The challenge serie is a mix of all kind of challenges, some people are better on the cpu challenges and others on the gpu challenges.

Just get a suitable GPU if you want to compete in the GPU challenges or sit these ones out seems to be the advice.

I don't know yet that there is a difference between GPU and CPU challenges...
Last year i also take part at CW challenge and i was able to finish around 50 units with 6 cores...
The problem is not to get in the top ten... the problem is that everyone can take part on a challenge, also people who have no Nvida. So what i ask is to make a challenge with such long units over 48 hours... thats all. :)

the units aren't too long, your athlon is just too slow. Next people will be asking why they can't run on their smartphones.

CW wu-s are really short, even on an old gts 450 it completes in 15 minuts. So if you are low on money, go get a gts 450 or ti550. Running gpu subproject on a cpu is inefficient, but possible. My gpu-s are running cw wu-s and cpu is runnin pps lrr (9.30 per wu).

thank you Arjant, of course given that the majority of the herd was absent the victory wasn't as hard fought as normal. (the tipping of cows however was just as fun :) )

as usual we look forward to the next challenge.

ps - did you happen to notice our secret weapon and no I'm not talking about cloud based gtx580s.

You mean your new rat jpaul?
Too bad he has hidden his computers, curious to see what he has got.

I hope the cows will be there the next one in april, but it might not be the case.
There is talk about a DPC wide stampede in April which usually will be for a month.
All cows come together and give one project a big boost and ofcourse compete among each other.
Probably wont be a primegrid project but it has not been determined yet.
So we'll see.

Even though this was just for fun, it appears that there may have been a lot of work done. So I was just wondering how this affected the end date of CW sieves if at all.

The results are Final!

The Leap Day "Just for Fun" Challenge is over. Although it lacked the bite of fierce competition, we hoped you still had fun. Actually, the Challenge was almost a carbon copy to last year's CW (Sieve) Challenge. Totals were within 1% and the winners were the same. :D

The Cullen/Woodall (Sieve) reached an incomplete depth of over 2350T. 29.8T of sieve work was crunched in over 82k tasks resulting in over 90.5M cobblestones awarded. 146 teams and 726 individuals participated in the Challenge.

Congratulations to Sicituradastra. as the top team and Ross* as the top individual.
