I read two threads that seems to give two different impressions. One states it's ok to shut down the computer and shutting the Boinc client and stopping all applications and the other option is to put it on stand-by so I don't lose work or even setting up a virtual machine.

I do not want to keep the computer on all the time plus the rest of the family uses it and I don't want them to mess it up. If anyone can clarify, it'd be appreciated.

There are 3 different cuda subprojects: PPS sieve, Cullen/Woodall sieve and GeneferCUDA. The latter can be stopped and restarted without loosing work, because it does a checkpoint just before closing. I think the same applies to the other two (you may loose some minutes of work, at most).

My personal experience says that putting the computer on sleep mode (or hibernation, if you have that enabled) is a different story. One of my hosts fails geneferCUDA tasks after resuming from sleep mode, but I'm not sure if this is a software or hardware issue.

So, If you close boinc before shutting down your host, you should be fine (i.e., after restarting, boinc will resume the tasks without any -or only with a little - loss of work).
